The funny thing is in trailers nowadays its just cutscenes. Back then, they actually showed gameplay.
in this particular case,most of the GTA 3 cutscenes were not that great to show in a trailer
You're acting like they don't show gameplay these days. Games are far more demanding. Imagine showing a bug in a trailer nowadays, probably would loose it.
@Happy Thoughts we never said that trailers back then are worse, we're saying that it's better than what we have now, which are either pre-rendered (which says nothing of the actual game) or cutscene focused (which ALSO says nothing about the game because a game is for playing, NOT watching). if you want a good balance, look at the original halo 1 trailer

One of the most sophisticated video games at the time. I can still feel the joy of playing it for the first time.
While it’s gameplay and visuals have clearly been improved upon in the following games the impact of this game can’t be forgotten. It was an absolute game changer getting this kind of world and freedom in a console game.

when I saw this trailer as a kid, my whole goal in life was to play this game. There hadn't been anything like it before. Completely revolutionized open-world and sandbox games.

Played this a lot as a kid but didn’t play much of the story like I did SA. I just drove around and blew things up haha. Glad I get to revisit the game and play more than just the first city missions.
All I remember of this game is me and my friends taking turns to see who can outlast the cops the longest. Each time one of us gets caught we would slap the person playing 😆.
Most of the people did the story because everyone wanted to the next island.

Kids nowadays will never understand how mind blowing the thought of this game was - 3D Free Roam?!? Go where you want? Do what you want? In a video game?

This title truly changed gaming in general tbh with you. It raised the bar in the gaming industry and was the most original concept ever.
Kids don’t understand how massive and free this game felt at the time. The only games that were somewhat similar to this game and by similar, I mean being able to freely explore a world were adventure games like Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Shadow man, and obviously others I can’t think of. We had RPG’s like FF7 as well but nothing that felt this free and open.
I used to get lost in the world of Shadow man when I was a kid. I’d play that game for hours and “role play” scenarios in my head like I was really interacting with the world and so, you can only imagine how immersed I felt with GTA3.
Another thing kids will never be able to really appreciate was the completion of games when they were released. There was no DLC or constant updates. When games were released, they were completed and all the extra content was on the disc ready to be unlocked. Companies are cash cows now and they release these incomplete games full of bugs. I mean, I’d rather play GTA3 any day of the week vs Cyberpunk. That’s how amazing this game is to this day.
I had played Driver 2 on PS1 prior to GTA 3 so the leap wasn't quite as big for me, but obviously GTA 3 had more stuff to do when free roaming and it did feel pretty mind blowing at the time. (I don't remember if you could do anything worthwhile in Driver 2 when not driving)
Kids today? I was one when this came out and I don’t understand anything mind blowing about this and im far from a kid lmao

The GTA Hype began with this game. It was revolutionary at its time. I remember sawing it the first time on the PS2 at my friends house. I was so fascinated by the atmosphere. The city felt so big, the freedom felt unlimited. I bought this for PC in 2002. I installed the first mods and tried myself to build some mods. A golden time! It was my first GTA experience. This is why GTA III is the best GTA game and will be forever.

Such memorable voice acting is what helped make these games timeless and by and large, made the series what it is today.
I love how this looks and feels like an early 2000s arcade game that you'd spend forever playing with your buddies until running out of money. Wish trailers for games were still done like this, it gives nothing away and is also really retro.

15 years of Gta 3
The very fact that I ACTUALLY remember seeing this back in 2001 and vividly remember thinking ‘wow, the graphics are incredible’ is not only hilarious, but also quite scary…
It’s amusing to me how people are confused by me saying it’s ‘scary’. I’m not up late at night shivering with fear over it, I’m not living in fear about it. I used the word ‘scary’ because it’s incredibly alarming how much has changed in such a short space of time. Looking at the speed of development in games and just technology in general, it’s astounding how fast we are moving. 100 odd years ago we were just learning how to make planes fly, and just 50 odd years after that WE WENT TO THE MOON! I find that stuff scary because of our potential and what’s to come next. Anyway, that’s what I found with this game. I was genuinely blown away by the graphics back in 2001 and felt this was as good as it could ever get and I was laughably wrong…so it’s scary to me that the potential of everything moving forward so quickly means that before we know it everything in our lifetime will change unrecognisably so every 10 to 15 years.

Insane that, this trailer 20 years ago was generating the same reactions, we all felt 10 years ago, watching the first GTA 5 teaser.
in kindergarten, i used to get off the school bus and go to my friend's house to play GTA III with him before his dad would come home. he had no memory card at the time so we'd just start on that bridge in the first mission and enter a bunch of cheats out of a cheat code guide book and pass the controller each time somebody died.
hilarious to think we were like 5 years old playing this and watching R rated movies and we grew up totally normal adults. then at the same time, they were always saying on the news that violent video games and movies made kids crazy. 🤣

This trailer gave me so much nostalgia! I played GTA 1-2 and London on Playstation One, and when I've finally got a PS2, I heard that there's a new GTA, the 3rd, which is now completely 3D! I had to buy the game, because I was a big fan of the series. I put the disc into my console, I was so excited, and man, I was shocked how beautiful it looked! The city was in full 3D, we finally played in 3rd person view (GTA 1-2 had top-down perspective), the graphics was stunning, the whole world felt much more alive! It still had the old GTA 1-2 camera view as an option, you could see how much technology has evolved with the new PS2 console. I could choose the missions, the order of missions, I could "choose" (haha) cars, I could go wherever I want, I could even pay for a whore to have sex with and get 125 health (this was the only option to have 125 health). Just walking around the city watching the NPC-s talking to each other, or having a fight, or watching a robbery, a crime was fun too. Never saw anything like that before. The whole game felt alive. Hell, I even had fun with just traveling around the city on a train and enjoying the view, the graphics. Nowadays most games have these options, possibilities, but back in the days, this game was revolutionary. With GTA 3, the game of freedom has born. Good times, damn.
This game is going to be a revolution in gaming industry. Can't wait for the release.

ahh the memories... getting my first ps2 when I was 10 along with three titles.
They were:
Drakan: The Ancient's Gates (very underrated game if you ask me)
WWF Smackdown: Just Bring It
and of course Grand Theft Auto III
all amounting to the best summer of my life!

I literally remember going to my older cousin's friends house with him and they had this like the week it released on a brand new PS2 in a trailer. I watched that shit in disbelief, literally mind blowing at the time. Made me get a PS2 and by that time vice city was out. I got both and probably played hundreds and hundreds of hours between them. Amazing

I was a teen in 2001, and didn't think it looked realistic. Just thought it was groundbreaking to finally have an open world sandbox in 3D on console. We'd still laugh at the deformed crab claws people had for hands.
