    And now, having heard both, I totally agree about the quality. They sound incredible.
    Because jazz is so "acoustic", reissues from the tapes can sound occasionally better than OG, and often way less noisy.
    I find that jazz OGs have their own appeal and I've got a few which sound great because they're quiet still... but for the vast majority of new jazz collectors, the Tone Poets, Classic, and Acoustic Sounds, etc series ...they make it so easy to "catch up" or join in the jazz community with AMAZING editions. In Pop/rock, the OGs are often worth seeking. In jazz, the reissues are a godsend. Thanks for the videos Michael!

    I own Kenny Burrell's self-titled album (BN 1543) by Blue Note/Tone Poet and is one of my go to vinyl's I get back to all the time. The dynamics, the variety of sessions in different configurations with dozen or more musicians involved, simply outstanding release.
    Tone Poet does it again, Joe must have golden ears as his releases are impossible to fault from quality of sound and reproduction of those minute specifics of the originals.

    If I'm not wrong the original intention of the Tone Poet series was to focus on great titles that were less familiar to listeners than the 'usual suspects' most jazz listeners already have in their collections in one format or another. In this respect the series is nothing less than spectacular, and the Grant Green title is a perfect example. If only all vinyl reissues were this good...

    I agree with you Michael. I find myself drawn to the Jazz reissues much more than other genres. The simple reason in that you can't get the original Jazz records because there were not many made of them and many are unobtainable. If you can find them they are way too expensive. With classic rock, they are a dime a dozen. You can still get OGs for cheap in good shape. Millions of them were made. So for example, if I have an original Rush record in great shape, I am normally not going to spend 20 or 30 bucks on a reissue unless it is a set with extra tracks or other additions. Thanks for the show and tell on these Tone Poets. All of them I have purchased have been great. These two are on my list!

  • @john-lamarca
    @john-lamarca 2 роки тому +12

    Blue Note OGs are iconic, and I would argue that the Kenny Burrell is even more so because you’d have an original piece of Andy Warhol’s work, at least similar to an original Warhol lithograph as it was produced in somewhat limited quantity.

    Hey Michael, I have both of these. To me sounds like contemporary fresh recordings. Excellent.
    A note on reissues. 10,000 people can’t go get OG or early pressings of records by any artist from any era. So there really isn’t any issue about reissues. Thx. ☮️

    Surely the main purpose of reissues is to make something available where existing global circulation is either in short supply, or is prohibitively expensive for most. If reissues are pressed for other reasons then it’s for commercial purposes only? Assuming we cannot really improve on the OG pressing (in 90+% of cases) then the only selling point has to be availability? Recently, George Michael Older fits the criteria perfectly.

  • @thelatearthurdent
    @thelatearthurdent 2 роки тому +3

    I agree with everything you said about reasons you should pick up some reissues. But, why ignore seemingly the most compelling reason (in this case, Blue Note recordings) -- that picking up a clean original could set you back thousands of dollars? I for one don't have that sort of disposable income (or desire) to spend on records of any kind.

    Anyone notice on the Kenny Burrell, last track "How About You", after the last little drum fill about 20-30 seconds before the end, there's a fairly dramatic cut where the ride cymbal doesn't wash and the volume goes way lower and sounds very unnatural (i'm a drummer). I'm guessing it's RVG mixing on the fly? It's on the streaming version as well, so it's not specific to this pressing. Just curious if anyone has insight on this?

    All true to 100%. To get an good sounding OG Blue Note mostly burns holes in your pockets. The classic series and the Tone Poets makes totally sense, also most of the Krautrock stuff. But did we need reissues for example from Phil Collins although you can get them for 1-5 Euros in very good condition on every Fleamarket or Record Store? But apparently the record industry earns the most with reissues of mega sellers of the past.

    • @gfy4476

      No point in getting Phil collins reissues as most pop reissues nowadays are mastered from digital sources. I’ll stake my money on originals when it comes to 80’s pop & rock music!! And a lot of it is still affordable!! 😊

    a suggestion, why dont you make a video on vinyl that sound great but are from obscure or lesser known labels. for example I have a blues vinyl from the 1960s issued under a label called Storyville. It is a beautiful pressing, dead quiet, pure analogue sound. it beats most of my modern day audiophile pressings. maybe you have vinyl like that and can show them?

  • @hifisuperpower8590

    Reissues are important and serve a purpose those of us who have been collecting records for many years now find we cannot afford to buy first pressings, bog standard mass produced first issues from the 70's and 80's that once cost £10 now cost 5,6 or even 7 times that and so Reissues done well can be the only way that most ordinary collectors can own a record now. A sensible record collector would always, always, always buy a first or 2nd press first it just makes sense the idea that this is some kind of a revelation is not true.
