    Thank you so much, tomorrow I need to explain this grammar to the whole class. I am certainly sure that my English is better than my teacher's because I have been learning English for 6,7 years and I still enjoy learning it.The only major problem is that my teacher keep's insisting that there is a difference between prefer and would rather but I think they are mostly the same.

    Hi Sarah, I always enjoy learning grammar with you. I think the answer is "stayed", isn't it ? Could you please explain to me how to use the word "individual" in essay writing ? Can we use it as substitute for 'people' ,'person'or 'one' ? I will be grateful to you for your reply.

    • @oxfordenglishnow
      @oxfordenglishnow  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Natalie, yes you are right! Well done! As for individual in essay writing. Here's what I found in the Cambridge dictionary:
      a single person or thing, especially when compared to the group or set to which they belong:
      Every individual has rights which must never be taken away.
      Like many creative individuals, she can be very bad-tempered.
      We try to treat our students as individuals.
      More examples
      The new tax system would be calculated on the value of property owned by an individual.
      It's a global problem - what can individuals do about it?
      He's an extremely unattractive individual, don't you think?
      The complexity and costliness of the judicial system militate against justice for the individual.
      The government has been encouraging individuals to opt out of the state pension scheme.
      Hope that helps!

    • @oxfordenglishnow

    Could someone pls kindly tell me :
    "I would rather Amy adopted a cat than (buy / bought) one now. " Which one is correct?
    "I would rather Amy had adopted a cat than (buy / had bought) one last month." Which one is correct?

    • @oxfordenglishnow
      @oxfordenglishnow  6 місяців тому

      Certainly! Let's go through the sentences one by one to identify the correct usage.
      1. Present/Future Preference
      "I would rather Amy adopted a cat than (buy / bought) one now."
      Correct: "I would rather Amy adopted a cat than buy one now."
      Explanation:
      "Would rather" is followed by a past simple verb ("adopted") to express a preference for the present or future.
      The second part should use the base form of the verb ("buy") because it is parallel to the verb "adopted" in expressing a preference.
      2. Past Preference
      "I would rather Amy had adopted a cat than (buy / had bought) one last month."
      Correct: "I would rather Amy had adopted a cat than had bought one last month."
      Explanation:
      When expressing a preference about a past action, "would rather" is followed by the past perfect ("had adopted").
      The second part should also use the past perfect ("had bought") to maintain consistency in the past time frame.
      So, the correct sentences are:
      "I would rather Amy adopted a cat than buy one now."
      "I would rather Amy had adopted a cat than had bought one last month."

    • @KCheng-j8l
      @KCheng-j8l 6 місяців тому

      @@oxfordenglishnow Thank you very much!! If you hadn't told me, I would have thought the correct answer was 1.) "I'd rather Amy (adopted) ... than (bought) one now" [in order to maintain (superficial) 'parallel" structure]
      and 2.) "I'd rather she (had adopted)... than (bought)" because in the 2nd part, we usually don't need the auxiliary verb.
      I've searched Google and couldn't find relevant information about this.
