Pretty cool fix, although I'd just use the paper rolls on bar itself. Which is something I do now with all my machines.
I you are sitting in front of a machine and look at the roller on the left, I place it inboard to where the first letter will be placed and then I place the right roller where the last letter can be placed on the inside of the roller.
    {§§§}x x{§§§}
My drawing above. The 'x' is where a letter can start on the left and on the right while in the margins.
I used the sub section or paragraph select symbol as it's rarely used by normal non-law writing people lol.
My first drawing on your channel Joe, I'm sorry there are no measurements and it's probably not to scale lol.
Good day, and it's a good idea if you didn't want to use the rollers.
Should be sea Foam green though lol❤
Okay, I wrote this ahead and I edited to add I understand why no green sea foam. I still like the fix are they still on the machine and how they holding up you still use them?

I've always wondered if it's possible to print an entire typewriter on a 3D printer?

Probably not with thermo plastic printing, but there are newer technologies using laser sintering that create metal parts; however the machines are tens of thousands of dollars.
The bigger problem with typewriter manufacture is many parts need special hardening or heat treatments, something more appropriate for machine shops.

Thanks Joe. Yeah, I’m thinking the card guide is going to be a tough one. I’m looking at a replacement knob that has a printed sleeve with the screw hole instead of the correct metal you mentioned. I’m thinking that will work but will still need to find a set screw as they don’t supply them.
I like your margin solution as many machines have the ribbon issue. This 1962 I’m getting today appears to have a working one as does the 1959 model i also own, so I was lucky on that…until one breaks 😄

Interesting solution, no doubt about it. I have a second generation Hermes 3000 and love the design and the key action, but it is also one of my machines with the most problems overall. Both knobs broke off and the side covers of the carriage are starting to crack. Cheap plastic at its best again... So far, I have not come across a first and third generation yet. I wonder if the carriage side panels are made out of plastic on the first gen too. Doesn't look like it though. Could somebody confirm my assumption? Thanks, all the best!

Sir, when I type till the right margin and move the carriage to type in the next line, a strange sound comes out. This happens when I use the handle to type on the next line?? I would be really helpful if you reply.

Neat. If a typewriter is missing a key cap that could be 3D printed! And keep it one color to then make all the caps uniform or not.

Nice! It is a feature that any typewriter should have. On my Smith Corona typewriters with three paper bail rollers, I place the edges first and last at the beginning and the end of the line. It works pretty well.

    Hi Joe,
Have you printed any curvy Hermes 3000 left side platen knobs or clear card guides? I’m picking up one today that is missing those two items and looking to source some replacements.

No I have not. I’m not sure if you can filament print in clear, or clear enough to be readable through the guide. The knob would need a metal insert pressed into the middle to mate with the metal shaft.

Hi Joe. I love your idea. One thing that intrigues me is how you got the end of line bell to work? I thought it was linked to the ribbon indicator mechanism, which you no longer have.

I didn’t have to do anything to it. The red ribbon and spring are missing, but the margin stops still work.

Clever, I love it! I wonder for the right margin, if you put a little thumb tab for rotating it up quickly? That was my thought, but also just setting it higher is good too. Amazing stuff!
