- In this build it yourself project I show you how you can make the perfect woodturning centre finder. This center finder is made from clear acrylic allowing you to see the wood you wish to find the center of. The total cost of this project was around £12 so its very economical too.
So if you would like to see how to make A DIY Wooturning Center Finder that is better than everything else out there then watch the video and see how i made it

Hi John,
I'm new to woodturning and have only recently discovered your channel (whilst looking for a video on a Sabre 350 bandsaw assembly). What a brilliant invention! This is one of the first projects I will be making. Thank you
The Clothier centre finder is born. Ingenious. 👊👊👊
Thanks Martin
This better than the collection of about 15 wooden discs I have. Sensible and a space saver too John, thanks for this!
Indeed William plus it has the advantage of being able to pick out features in your wood
Very good idea, like it.👍👍👍
Thanks Rex
Great video, thank you.
Glad you liked it
Hi Mr. Clothier
This is a useful video for those wanting to design & build their own measuring & marking out...
Thanks Glenn I have found it very useful myself already.
The simplest idea's are sometimes the best. will make one myself.
They often are Dave.
Excellent 👍👏👏👏😃
Thank you!
Brilliant John, just what I've been looking to make but wasn't sure how to go about it! Thanks!!!
Thanks. Glad its of use to you!
I made mine around twenty years ago. Didn't think to mount it on the lathe to mark the circles though. I also used a permanent marker to emphasise the lines. But, one day while ebonising a piece with Indian ink, a drop splashed onto the acrylic. When I wiped it off I realised it did a better job than the pen and of course, it's permanent. Thanks for sharing John. A well detailed instructional video.
Thanks Gary. Thats an interesting idea. I have some indian ink, I may give that a try!
Thanks very much for the great advice and clear instuctions, adding further holes and different colours for each, would also be an advantage, Cheers and thanks again.
Thanks John. That's a great idea! Wish id thought of that lol
Handy bit of kit. Thanks John.
Indeed!
Nice one, John - great, clear explanation of the making and using of the centre finder.
Thanks Stewart!
Brilliant! I will be making one! Thanks John 👍
Dead easy to do so go for it!
Great video, looks like a pretty hand bit of kit for a turner
Thanks Paul. Indeed! It has come in very handy already!
Simple and effective John👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Alan. Simplicity usually wins over
I'm so going to have to make one of these :-)
Stephen's 8x6 Workshop you should. So much cheaper than anything you can buy plus you can make it bespoke to your needs
Really nice John! May have to make one myself
Thanks William. You should. I did consider casting one, there's a challenge for you!
Great job John, this is one of those workshop jobs that I’ve been meaning to do for ages, I really liked the way you made it one the lathe. Maybe I will get round to it after Makers Central. Cheers, Jim
Thanks Jim. You should, its amazing how useful it is and so cheap to make there is no point in buying one. see you saturday!
Been looking forward to this video john will be giving this a go. Thank you for sharing :-)
Thanks Pam I hope it didn't disappoint!
That is slick!
Thanks Ron
Love it! Hopefully you're on to a business idea here :)
Thanks Vikkie. it was fun to make but not sure I would want to make them all the time!
great idea!!
Thanks mate
Very useful. I've been wondering how you made this without a laser cutter. Thanks.
Thanks Andy. The mystery is revealed :-)
I have one of this, I bought it at my woodturning club from one of the demonstrators, but it was made on CNC
As you can see, no CNC needed. So simple to make to
brilliant
Thanks Linndsay
Very useful video John. Could you tell me what thickness acrylic you used?
Thanks Pamela. It was 5mm I believe.
John Clothier Thank you John. Something I will try.
John would you mind advising us where you obtained the acrylic sheet for the price you mention, as I cant se it less than £19. Cheers, William.
Sure, eBay. Plenty of options there
A found one thanks John, nice translucent yellow disc :)
I made one John! But thought Id be clever and buy a tinted yellow disk (450mm diam). Mmmm seems I need a centre finder to find the middle of the disc... :(
Oh dear.
Great tipps anderen great center finder. Ich have to make my own one. Greetz from my channel / The Wooden Nerd
Thank you!
How much would you charge to have one of those made?
To be honest it would be more than you could just buy one from a shop for. Making one for yourself when you dont care about your time they are very cheap but to make them as a business they are quite expensive to make
@@JohnClothier Have you seen one for sale as big as the one you made?
I have but I cant recall where
It's good to see Woodglut have new instructions to save my money and energy to build it.
Hmmm... I finally followed Ann's advice and took Woodglut. It's great for beginners and has some advanced stuff too.
