- Learn to make an homemade center finder jig / centre marking jig. I often need to find center on boards for all sorts of different reasons like cutting in half with the table saw or mitre saw, and often the quickest and easiest way is to use my center finding jig to mark the lumber at it's center point.

Please do a demo showing how to find a center of a circle to be drilled. I love your videos and have learned so much about woodworking tools.
친절한 아저씨 고맙습니다.
날마다 즐겁고 안전한 우드워커 되시길 바랍니다.
I would rather have your original, fixed pin design in two or three different sizes. This adjustable model introduces the possibility of innaccuracies, I feel. There again, anything with a pencil stuck in the centre isn't going to be as accurate as a centreing rule anyhow, but I do love the handiness of these jigs. Thank you.
You oughta patent some of this great stuff! Never seen so many great ideas on ONE CHANNEL!
Nice work. You can add a sclae on both sides so that it is easy to keep the side bolts exactly the same distance from the centre pencil....
Great tool. And you can use a sharpened screw as a center point and swing the pencil around to mark an arc.
+Tim Sack Great idea Tim!
Great design
Before you glue the added wood for the pencil. Put a saw cut to the hole . Glue all but that one side of the cut. Drill side for thumb screw. Clamps pencil without damaging it.
That is a pretty cool idea. I have also ran into the issues that you stated in your video. I am going to have try and make me one of these..
Well done Colin, Will be making one of those!! Thanks!!
Frank
You're welcome Frank!
Great idea. Like your first jig but like this one even more. Keep up the jig ideas/hacks.
Excellent!!! Bob
Another idea if you haven’t got brass blocks is do what I do, use drill bits
Can you possibly show us how to make a center finding jig for centering dowels?? This jig your making now to center boards that it adjusts is awesome!!
Thanks Colin. I'm making mine this week. You ROCK!
very nice Colin!
Awesome, very simple, all your videos are very helpful
Thank you Anthony!
Great design Colin. I guess I'm going to have to try one of these for myself.
If you needed to tighten the pencil hole you could cut a slot the length of the block and then put bolts on either side of the pencil hole. Also you could put spacers on the bolts so they would roll and not drag down the sides of the piece.
Your videos are awesome,i'm always learning from you, thanks for sharing Colin,
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
One more time thanks for the video and sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for sharing Colin!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching Dan!
Too late Colin, I made three of your original design,.. S, M & L, to accommodate my needs, but if and when, I will consider V2 of your Centre finder :)
The originals work good too! Thanks for watching peter!
great idea thanks Colin
Pretty clever!!! Well done!!
There again Colin, you have taken an idea and made it fantastic. Good job, thanks man.
You're welcome Robert. Thanks for watching!
Nice build. One hint "Fender Washers"
Very useful cheap diy tool, glad to be your subscriber sir...
Thank-you for watching!
I have to disagree on this one, having to manually align the jig every time is a hassle and increases the chance of incorrect measurements. It would be better to have multiple fixed positions to put the pins, basically just add more holes to the first jig.
If modifying the first jig fit you're needs better, by all means do so. Jigs are all about what works best for the user. Thanks for watching.
I didn't mean to sound harsh, there's probably advantages to this new version as well :) Anyways, thanks for the good free content!
Great modification Don. I think I will use your tip.
Spot on!
I'm wondering if a strip of wood with incremental holes you add or remove dowels to would also work. I like this idea, though. then again, I like all your ideas whether I use them or not.
Great video! I need one of those. Thanks!
Great ideas and application. Thanks as always...rr
Great project!
How about adding multiple marks on either side of the gauge to line up the bolts for different widths of boards. Maybe measure out very 2 inches and mark it with a Sharpie to line up the bolts. Great idea for a 1 size fits all center finder.
Ok for close enough. Colin measuring the bolts from the center to the bolt with the same "gauge" will yield much better accuracy.
You probably measure the original instead setting up the nut. Mab be usable for repeat.
But you may build a jig with a gear in the middle and teeth on the side trail with a T track base. So when you dial those pin move equal distance. But the chalange is teeth size and play between teeth.
Am I missing something, or couldn't you simply have taken the original jig and drilled a couple of spots at different widths from the center, and put (removable) dowels in those for more narrow boards? Seems *much* easier...and, frankly, waaaay less likely to screw up due to not setting the two screws properly.
Larry B I've done that to the first jig. 3 stops each side covers 100% of my "center-finding" needs.
This jig is FULLY adjustable, but the first jig can be modified to fit most of your needs with extra dowels as you suggest.
Perhaps there is a way to set a controlled offset from center?
Yes Colin, the jig is fully adjustable and it's a good design.
The only issue is that the two screws must be exactly the same distance from the center. Like Larry B suggests, if there are 2 or 3 holes drilled on either side at the precise spots, the jig will serve the same purpose without the need to position the two screws at the right spots.
That's exactly what I was thinking just a minute into the video.
I like the jig regardless
Thanks!
Colin, I don't know how I missed this but here's something for you. I know this is an old video. I hope you see this. You looked like you were in a big hurry here. Don't wait for that PVA glue to dry. Take my idea. Moisten the hell out of one side of the part you wanna glue and put a spot of CA glue on the other part. Put them together for an almost instant bond. Don't dawdle. You can thank me later. Cheers.
Isn't it better to have the thin strips of wood cut off to be on the orher side of the blade? If the thin strip is between the blade and fence, a kickback chance is very high. Speed square is faster just draw two diagonal lines the intersection is the middle
Excellent
Great vid and jig Colin. You help us beginners So Much! (c=
Best, best, best!
Maybe a good idea to laminate a seamstress tape measure into the side. That would fix the prob with having to have the bolts exactly right. Guess they don't have a tape to use.
That would be a great addition! Thanks for watching!
Great video my friend
Ok 👌 Frenk. Meraviglioso..Fabri Italia
Thank You!
Found it, thank you.
Nice jig.
I enjoy wood work n u to I learned so much n to us my tools 😲😲
Awesome idea....thanks
Genial!
I watched your video and thought it was great. Are there plans for your center finder? Is it best to use some type of hard wood for this project?
By the time you carefully set the two bolts equally spaced from the center, you could have laid out the center of the board you are trying measure!! AND that pencil is not round, so measuring to it is inaccurate.
that's what I was thinking of watching the video , but then I thought this jig is good for repetitive measurements though it not dead precise .
Does anyone know who is the original center finder inventor? Unable to find the info. I know that this was invented by someone long ago
Superb video as usual.... Thank you.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
How do you quickly, accurately and repeatedly adjust this? Or do you just get it close, then run it once, flip it, and run it again to get an average center?
I think the video explains the method of adjustment, but I'm grateful for your idea of flipping it to verify accuracy.
@@turnerc23 I have yet to find a pencil sharpener that gets the point exactly concentric to the outside of the pencil. So the method of adjustment shown in the video is only "close enough" at best. It doesn't take much to put the center point of a center finder annoyingly off center.
Nice
Thank You!
Where’s the link for the measuring blocks
Just use Drill bits, as Colin did for one of his measurements. A lot cheaper than having fancy blokes.
Peter Compton
But sometimes more awkward to handle depending on what you’re doing. The link would be of interest just to see the range on offer.
Oops, forgot the link. Here ya go amzn.to/2zRK8cs
Ummm I wonder if you will get a center line in the same place if you turn the device round?
Could you mount bearings on the bolts somehow or will it cause problems?
try spacers for rollers.
I don't see how bearing could hurt, but spacers like suggested already would probably be easier.
I honestly couldn't think of any bearings you could use on a bolt but having worked with spacers recently they came to mind. You would need to have a bolt with more threads and maybe washers and jam nuts to keep the spacers in place.
Amazing ... I made one but is not better then you u is great 👍
Thank you for watching Jose
Rather than have “another” jig get a piece of string measure it across the wood and fold in half and you’ll have dead centre
what a conundrum, you need a center finding jig to find the center of your center finding jig
That is dumbest idea I have seen you come up with it doesn't work how do space the bolts evenly to get center.
marvelous (don't know the right spelling)
