    The Many Colors of Tourmaline
When you think of tourmaline, what color comes to mind first? Is it the raspberry red hues of rubellite? The neon electric blues of specimens from Paraiba? or is it the multi-colored elongated crystals of liddicoatite?
Tourmaline isn't a single gemstone species, it's actually a group. Specifically, it's a boron-silicate group that has a lot of different species and many different varieties, which can all possess a large diversity of colors, inclusions and appealing factors.
Tourmaline though, is the term people are most familiar with. Not many who buy tourmaline jewelry refer to a species specifically by name- examples of which would be elbaite, or dravite. These names are not really used in mainstream jewelry very much.
Certain trade-locality names like Paraiba, named after the vibrant green-to-blue specimens from Brazil's Paraiba area, have become popularly used as well. Paraiba tourmaline is now one of the most expensive kinds of tourmaline.
Other names like indicolite (normal blue) and verdelite (normal green) are also sometimes used for both jewelry and loose-stone trading at gem fairs and shops, but the group name 'tourmaline' is by far the most popularly used name for this gemstone.
Tourmaline is probably the (if not one of the) largest group of gem-worthy minerals out there, with colors ranging from black (schorl) to colorless (achroite), and nearly every color of the rainbow.
It can compete with the upper tiers of colored stones in terms of value, and can also provide slightly more affordable alternatives to traditional gems like ruby or emerald. Tourmaline is one of the fastest growing gems today, in terms of recognition amongst new jewelry collectors and enthusiasts.

One of the prettiest rings I ever saw (and coveted!) was a deep pine green tourmaline set in yellow gold. I was 10 at the time and am over 70 now and still remember it.

@@kellyharper367 Know how you feel.... Been a rock picker-upper since I was old enough to walk. Have rocks picked up from every place I've been all over the world. Have a piece of chalk covered flint from Denmark, and one or two from New Zealand and a tiny piece of opal from Australia someone gifted me. Instead of flowers I have a crystal bowl of assorted rocks, pebbles and crystals of all colors and textures. I like to finger them and remember all the people and places I found them. I think that's one of the best things about what we like to do.

Ahh, Paraiba! My favorite tourmaline! However, it’s pronounced, Para-eeba. The Paraiba mine in Brazil is “played out” and this beautiful color is exhausted, driving up the price. The largest one I’ve ever seen was 88 carats!
Oddly enough, it’s been recently discovered in Africa. If you were to fit the map of South America into the notch in the African map, that’s where it was discovered in Africa. It’s believed to be the same vein that was split when the two continents divided during the continental drift that split Pangea.

We need to understand that being at the top of the pyramid of creation means that everything we do trickles down the structure, from top to bottom. When it reaches the bottom, the inanimate level of reality, from which everything grows, it changes it. If we ooze ill-will, it creates negative changes throughout the system, which manifest in increasingly extreme climatic and geological events.
In other words, when human relationships go out of balance, everything goes out of balance. When our relations become extreme, everything becomes extreme; when we become violent, everything becomes violent. Each summer, the ramifications of the linkage between our relations and our world become more extreme, until we acknowledge that everything that exists, exists in a connected, hierarchical system and that whoever is at the top determines the state of the rest of the system.
It is not as if previously, we were better people than we are today. It is simply that there were fewer people, and therefore fewer elements that exude ill will.
Also, relationships between people in the past were less toxic than they are today. While there are fewer wars today than ever, the levels of suspicion and alienation between people are skyrocketing, to the point where people can no longer trust their own family members. As a result, wars between countries are rarer than ever, but divorce rates, domestic violence, and violence in the community, are at an all-time high.
Even the internet, which we invented purportedly in order to connect people, is being used to abuse, deceive, and exploit people. The world-wide-web proves that everything we create, we use against others. When there is such a negative element in a system, and that element is at the top of the system, how can the entire system not go awry?
Therefore, if we want the weather to cool, the sea-level to drop, and the storms to subside, we must cool the fire and calm the storms between us. Mutual concern, mutual responsibility, or at least the knowledge that we are dependent on each other, are necessary in order to restore balance in our world at all levels, from the ground we walk on to the hatred in our hearts.
