    I’m the ORIGINAL author of the Reel Fill Calculator. I offered it to Mike to put up on Great Lakes Fisherman over a decade ago. There was a brief story about it in Great Lakes Angler Magazine about that same time. That’s my email at the bottom and Arbogaster is my radio handle.

    Another great video, Chris! Keep them coming. Can you PLEASE do a "How To" tutorial on spooling reels for Wire Divers? I know it has to be done right and I want to learn. Tired of paying shops to Pre-Spool my gear. I know you make money that way and nothing wrong with that but I'm a "Do it yourself" kind of guy and I know there are others out here that want to know. Thanks. Late January here in mid-Michigan and I am getting cabin fever waiting for that lake water to soften up. Take care!

    Great video!!! I did the exact same thing with my pliers once, but off the side of the boat - LMAO... My buddy and I looked at each other and said - WTF... And laughed! Sheathing - like the sheathing on wiring as well....

      Thanks Steve. In the back of my head I knew it was sheathing but for some reason my mouth kept saying sheating. And why I threw the pliers in the trash will forever be a mystery. I’m glad you can relate.

    To keep overhand knot open, tie it over a 2 inch piece of pool noodle. Remove noodle and roll knot over to desired area, tighten.

    I've had great results, with no breakage, with a simpler knot: merely leave the lead in the line, tie an overhand knot in it,
    trim the end, and tie a uni-knot with the backing line around the leaded line just above the overhand knot. When tightening,
    slide the uni-knot down to the overhand knot and strongly tighten. (Actually, the uni-knot is so secure on the leaded line
    that you really don't need the overhand knot, but I use it just in case.) Gary Northrop

    It looks like you fed the line underneath the reel spool . Does it matter if it fed over the top of the spool of the reel and tied off. ?

    The only thing i do different is when I remove the core from the sheath, i place the overhand knot up the leadcore where the core is still inside the sheath , then place the mono leader or backer inside the dacron sheath until it butts up against the core, then slide the knot down until it’s just above where the mono slides in before i tighten it down.

    Your videos are just incredible. They have taught me so much I can't thank you enough. I just got into lead core last year and one thing that I'm not sure about is how much backing do you let out? Do you stop letting line out once the last of the lead core is a few feet in the water? Or some particular amount of backing where you can't see the lead core anymore? If you've covered this I apologize, I must have missed it in your lead core videos and can't seem to find an answer anywhere else.

    • @tangledtacklefishing
      @tangledtacklefishing  3 роки тому

      There’s a couple schools of thought here. 1. Clip the board on to the backing right after you get the LC in the water so you’re always clipping the board to the same spot. A couple benefits are if you are getting a worn area in the line it will generally be in the same spot and easily identifiable. The other is consistency- every time your bait will be generally the same distance behind the board (and boat). 2. Vary the amount of backing you send out before attaching the board so you’re not wearing the same section of line where you attach the board. This isn’t as big of an issue because planer boards don’t generally wear your line unless there’s something wrong like cuts in the board arm, etc.
      With all of that being said I use #1. Clip your board onto the backer after you get the LC in the water. - Jim

    • @kava8902
      @kava8902 3 роки тому

      @@tangledtacklefishing Thanks Jim! So is it safe to say if you let out 5 color the depth is approx 25ft whether the "end" of the LC is 2ft from the surface or 10ft? The reason I ask is I talked to someone and they say they let 100ft of backing out. Using the 5 color example it made me think the lure might drop more than 25ft if you let that much backing out but that's my confusion. Does it matter how much backing is out or will 5 color always be at about 25ft whether the LC is just 2ft from the surface or 100ft out.

    • @tangledtacklefishing
      @tangledtacklefishing  3 роки тому +1

      @@kava8902 the bait end is still going to be 25’ down (approximately) at the same boat speed. Letting out 100’ of backer is just going to put your bait 100’ behind the boat.

      @@kava8902 I've heard that too people have told me they will reset their line counter once all the LC is out and use the line counter to send out 30 more feet of backing giving them approximately 5 more feet in depth and so on and so on ,it makes sense I guess if you take into the consideration that's how In line weights work technically your ledcore is just a super long inline weight so the more distance from the boat the more it should increase depth but I'm no pro

    • @kava8902
      @kava8902 2 роки тому

      @@christiandemaria2125 I spoke with a few pros and they explained, like TTF, that it doesn't matter how much more line you let out. 5 color is 25ft (35ft with the 832 advanced) down whether the board is 5ft from the end of the leadcore or 100ft. Because the boat is moving the drag and pull downward of the leadcore is the same. The leadcore depths are for 2mph so I imagine if you're moving significantly slower or faster that will change the depth a bit. I really had to get precision out of my brain because none of this is going to be precise but just close.

    Say your in 100 FOW and you are running 4 lead core lines off each side of the boat on planners. One day the fish are at 20 feet, next day at 40 and then 60 the next. Do you need 4 rods/reels setup for each example since you do not connect the lead core to the planner board directly? Please help. I am struggling with the versatility of lead or wire. Would one better off cost wise going with braid and a snap on weight to what ever desired lead length the day calls for?

      Don't use the line counter at all. It will be way off. Measure off a section on your driveway or other area that is a known distance and then measure out your line to be spooled on accordingly.
