As a behaviour analyst, I can say that the basic principles of learning are the same for dogs AND humans. Everything I know about human learning, with the exception of language and higher level discrimination, is applicable to dogs.

And dogs can even learn to recognize (and potentially use, if some of the recent studies of use of ACC hold up) language, at least to some degree.

@@megelizabeth9492 yes !! have you seen the button boards people make for their dogs where the dog presses the buttons and each one says a different word ? they understand language enough to form sentences with this method , they just don't have a mouth that can articulate like we do ☺️

I agree dogs are not much different from children. You teach them proper manners around others, you potty train them, and they need constant guidance and love. I really love your videos!

Ian, I am a twenty two year veteran teacher (and a very short stint as a principal). I have never had to raise my voice to any of my high school students and athletes. I am very impressed that you are able to utilize Harry Wong wisdom. Thank you for all of your generous content.

I am very impressed that you were able to transfer the methods from the Wong and Wong's book for students to dog training. I am a teacher myself. Ever since I adopted my dog and started teaching her, I have found more and more similarities from teaching "human puppies" (That's how I call children anymore haha). Needless to say, this is a great informative video. Love it!

We just got our first dog and these videos are truly FANTASTIC!!!! LOVE the positive approach and the dog psychology. Also I appreciate the blatant truths such as "your dog didn't fail...you failed the dog". It's so helpful to know it's up to US to train the dog and how to do that properly. Keep on shooting videos!!

kitkatkamo. How refreshing to hear someone actually say they don’t own a dog because it doesn’t fit in with their lifestyle. I wish millions of other dog owners across the world who give no consideration to whether a dog will fit in with their lifestyles still go ahead and get one anyway.

it's all about building habits as I've discovered with my two. they operate like clockwork and pick up routines so quickly. it's lovely to observe. 'if this, then that'. they are such a joy to watch and such observers of my little habits. they have us down pat! and then there are the times when they are not 'getting it' as I think. but like you say Ian, that is more to do with my approach than their ability. all of what you say rings true for me and I imagine if my two could contribute to this they would howl in, hear, hear, get your act together human!

This is perfect! When I connected my puppy’s age to my grandson’s age (grandson will be 2 in Dec, pit bull pup will be 2 next April) it made training and disciplining so much easier. I haven’t perfected anything but my patience and allowance for learning have increased. Great video!

Thank you, we're picking up our rehomed dog tomorrow and your videos have been invaluable. Husband and I have already discussed boundaries (eg where in the yard he will potty, which rooms he can go in, whether or not he's allowed on the couch, etc etc) and routines right down to when he'll be fed each day. Your tips about deciding on boundaries right from the get go have been invaluable, I think too many new dog owners bring the dog home, let them loose and "see how they go" before deciding on boundaries. Next thing they know the dog is lying all over the couch, chewing their shoes, and pooping in their flower garden, and it's very difficult to fix. Thank you for your to-the-point tips!

Helping me feel much more confident about bringing a dog into my home- I need to have her as trained as possible so I can get her special training to be a service and support dog as well as part of the family. I was feeling really anxious because I’m not good at being dominant or even attempting it, I’m more reserved and like to take softer routes when possible but 99% of people told me you can’t train a dog (or any animal) like that.

Your videos are amazing; so well done! I'm also a teacher and have read a lot of books on animal behaviorism. You're spot on. When I first started teaching 12 years ago, I used a lot of the Wongs' book resources and what I was doing at home in training my new puppy. I now have a puppy again and so have been freshening up my reading and researching and found your vids. You're right. Just put in the work and time now at the start of the dog's life and you can practically coast the rest of their life; not unlike the first month in a classroom. Good management means that the rest of the year is smooth. Thank you!!!!

My master's thesis was about the parallels of early childhood education and training of pet animals. At first my project was met with some resistance, but was eventually accepted My unruly 4th grade class became the model class. now My newly adopted rescue dog will be another test of the strategies I enumerated in my thesis. Hey, great videos! I have been watching a bunch of them recently. I did have one comment, for videos like this one could you also put examples for each talking point? It is sometimes difficult to get a better understanding of the point without a demonstration. Some videos, like the 5 steps with a new puppy do this, and it is great.

Oooh that's a special kind of challenge, especially with litter mates. They kind of egg each other on like Thing 1 and Thing 2 in the Cat In The Hat. Definitely do a lot of work together, but also do a lot of work one-on-one. You could do it simultaneously if you have one handler per dog (i.e. you and your wife). And also, don't rely on them to socialize each other; make sure they have plenty of opportunities to play with other dogs. That can sometimes backfire as housemates get super-socialized to each other and then turn ultra-reactive to other dogs. Don't be scared-just get them out of the house a lot and give them opportunities for good, unstructured play. Good luck!

Also boredom while I'm at work, I may need to learn how to crate train them or limit their area. W are a work in progress. This video gives me some points to work with about how to go about it. Thanks!

    0:00 intro/background
2:14 Tip 1: Effective owners manage their dog; ineffective owners discipline their dogs
2:56 Tip 2: The most important thing an owner can provide for a dog is security
3:27 Tip 3: Home must be a safe and protected environment where a dog can come to learn without fear
4:32 Tip 4: the number one problem with dog behavior is not discipline, it is the lack of procedures and routines
5:51 Tip 5: All procedures must be rehearsed
6:45 Tip 6: Reinforce a correct behavior, reteach an incorrect one
7:30 Tip 7: If your dog cannot demonstrate learning or achievement, the dog hasn't failed - we have failed the dog
7:55 Tip 8: Learning is much more effective when it takes place within a supportive community (even if that community is just your family)
8:41 Tip 9: The greater the structure of a lesson and the more precise the directions on what to do, the lower the error rate and the higher the achievement rate

Great video doesn't do this any justice; it's phenomenal!! As a dog trainer, I teach many of the very same things you go over in your videos and use much of the same terminology. This is what Professional Dog Training is all about. Keep up the great work. I share your videos all the time with my clients now because everything is so very clear, concise, and easy to understand. Not to mention, very informative. Thanks for all the hard work you put into making them.

Haha. I had taken my prior experience from teaching and applied a lot of the principles to training my dog mostly because it "made sense". Good to have someone knowledgeable confirming that's the case!

So I am a full time trainer (I mainly work with reactive/aggressive dogs) but it is soooo exciting to see another trainer coming up on youtube to recommend to clients! I love how you touch up on topics that many other popular trainers on this platform don't discuss. Because it's very obvious on how to teach sit, stay, come, etc. However, you are approaching the other side of training which is really where the majority of success comes from! Super excited to see what else you cover in the future (:
May I ask where you're based out of?

Hi there! Thanks so much! It's nice to connect with ya! I'm based out of upstate New York, specifically the Southern Tier-Elmira, Horseheads, Corning-service area. Keeps me hopping, for sure! And you?

Seconded. Teaching obedience commands and tricks is easy. I honestly care more about the "general living" and "day to day management" stuff. I love this channel because of it.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  5 років тому +1

Hi Sally. It's hard to design a "one size fits all" kind of schedule, since every household and every dog is different. We can suggest some of the most important things to do first, but your own schedule, layout, and needs will determine the bulk of what to do first. Usually I suggest that potty training (for all ages) is #1, setting a meal schedule is #2, and household routines/manners is #3. Everything else kind of fits in behind those.

Your style choices might be dubious, but your training is impeccable. Having lost my old, beautifully trained 15 year-old Beardie before Christmas, I now have a fabulous, but anarchic Beardie pup. These videos are reminding me of the training I need to do once again. And I'm sharing them with other owners of pups from the same batch. Thank you

I have watched a handful of your videos and plan on watching more for sure!
I recently got a puppy and I’m struggling to effectively train him. I was wondering if you could make a video on how to properly and effectively discipline.
As I was watching one of your videos he decidedly jump up on the bed and pee.
    Thank you!

Hi Ian, great video as always. The frozen kongs are working a treat on my staffie cross whippet. I'm having issues with counter surfing, she is a scavenger do you have any tips? Because of her breed she can jump on tables and benches easily. I wish I lived in the states to do your classes, have you ever thought about doing session over Skype? Thanks again for giving up your time. Hope olive and the rest of your fur babies are well.

Hi, great video! I think I watched every video you uploaded 😁. I have a 4 month old and i've been following your tips and they really worked out 🙌🏽 but i still don't know what to do when the dog make a mess when I leave her for a while. She grabs whatever is within reach and destroys it in pieces 👎🏼 even though i leave the chew toy and everything.. its just not working. Your videos taught me a lot but how can i make her understand whats wrong? Greetings from Argentina!!!
