@@nikolaiarnaudov3785 Cesar's approach to training dogs is archaic and backward - he relies on the need to dominate the dog. No modern trainer uses this approach anymore, verbal markers and positive reinforcement is the most effective approach. I agree, this dude is excellent, I can also highly recommend Stonnie Dennis.

I was consistent and provided lots of structure when my boxer was a puppy and he is SUCH a good boy. I never let him have free roam of the house or the yard until he was completely potty trained. he either was kept in the room that I was in or on a leash and I took him on a leash everytime to the same spot to potty outside. he slept in his crate every night and never whimpered. I also knew I didn't want a dog that begged for my food every time I sat down at the dinner table so I never give him anything off my plate and therefore he does not get into the trash can. I fed him in his crate to associate it with positivity and that is still where he eats and sleeps today. I didnt allow him on the furniture and we had to work on him not learning to jump up on people. 5 years later he is perfectly well behaved and so easy to take anywhere. he is polite and of course now I give him more leniency and allow him on the couch and bed occasionally. Its so nice to have a dog that is so polite and precious, but I know that had I not trained him this way as a puppy he would have turned out completely different

Hi Hannah. Love that you said at the end there, "Its so nice to have a dog that is so polite and precious, but I know that had I not trained him this way as a puppy he would have turned out completely different." I could not have said it better myself! thanks for sharing! And great work, BTW!

I think it's awful not allowing dogs on the furniture. It's hard on their bodies. And studies show, people who sleep with dogs are healthier.

    You are a life saver!
I made a big mistake.. I adopted a 1 year old untrained working-dog as a first-time dog-owner... naively thinking she had already learned the basics, and naively thinking I would manage since I do have experience training horses. Turns out I adopted a 25kg puppy with puberty behaviour and no basic skills.. and absolutely zero experience to rely on concerning dog training. So while I was wondering how to teach her sit, stay etc.. I completely missed the point where horses are kept in stables and round pens until they know how to behave and I did not give het ANY directions about houserules. The misbehaviour had already started when luckily I found your video's. We've started over and are doing much much better now ❤️

Great tips. I've adopted adult dogs from shelters because I knew I didn't have the time at home for a puppy. But now that I'm working home full time I'm looking into adopting a puppy and I totally agree about the structure. Start with a lot of structure and boundaries, and they can earn more freedom as a reward for positive behaviors. The second adult dog I adopted had a lot of food aggression (she was previously in an animal hoarding case and had to fight for food). We implemented a rule that she had to sit say during feeding time and couldn't eat until our other dog had finished eating. She learned VERY FAST to behave at mealtime and the food aggression stopped within a week.

Alright the best quote from Ian in this video for me is -"if a dog misbehaves in your home, it's your fault". Totally agree. Educate thyself and persevere. If anything these videos reminds me to take more time out to bond with my old girl who's 15 and a real inspiration. It's pretty heartbreaking when you hear Olive previous owner giving up.

Thanks, Rin Tin. Wow 15!? Yup, love that girl up. And the longer we have Olive the more signs of neglect and irresponsible ownership we discover. She's a sweetheart and a good girl, but she's working through some stuff that's all directly related to bad owners. Thanks for being one of the good ones!

Hi @Evangelina Byrd I definitely agree with you. I have lived with dogs for a very long time and they all have been the same breeds but different generation of lines behind the dogs. I have owned Irish Setters, Sussex Spaniels, Aussies and currently own a Harlequin Great Dane. Each breed has a mind of their own and we had to teach them how to behave properly. Such as teaching the Sussex how to wait for his food so he doesn't take it out of our hands (He is 2 so he still is young but has been getting much better) and we followed the same technique for the rest of our dogs. We have seen great improvement and they all can eat food near one another without trying to steal the others foods. I have been following the different tips and tricks @Simpawtico Dog Training has done and have greatly appreciated it!

I have taken on a 3 year old she snarled and snapped at me first meeting 😮‍💨
A few months later she is a Velcro dog, but I’ve taught her ‘place’ when I want her to go to her place where she has a chew etc.
We do sooo much of various stuff too.
Lots of walks and adventures 😊
She use to wee & pee all over the place.
Now she knows potty time is varied times early am etc
She now goes to the door if she wants out 😃
She use to tremble uncontrollably she still does but it considerably less noticeable.
She is a fast learner and an absolute pleasure.
We really enjoy each other’s company.
    She’s seriously adorable.
We have Morning - night routine.
    She’s an Angel…

The same thing happened to my rescue dog! He was a 2 year old stray, and the original owner was found but he didn’t want him back. 😭 He was also underweight, not neutered, not potty trained, and was so sick he would constantly puke (we didn’t have access to knowing his old dog food, so we had to create a food plan). Since we were new pet owners, we definitely made some mistakes (I WISH I had found this video when we first found him!) mostly in how to play with him, because at first he didn’t even know what toys were! But this video made me feel so much better about how far he’s come in less than 6 months. He’s now a healthy weight, neutered, not barfing anymore, on a strict eating and walking schedule, potty trained, crate and bedtime trained, respects restricted areas even when the puppy gate is not up, and has been learning his basic commands like come, sit, stay, wait, take it, drop it, leave it, let go while playing and heel while walking. We are still dedicated to getting him trained even more once we get vaccinated for Covid, and sociable with other people and animals, but we’re so very happy he’s made such amazing progress! He’s such a good boy now and I’m so very proud of him! 🥰🥰🥰

Wonderful video for new owners!! Your videos are very informative and unlike any other behaviourist out there..It's even better how humble and genuine of a person you are.
Can you please list some pro tips or maybe do a short video talking about how exactly to manage guarding behaviour in young puppies?
I have a 15 week old female working line gsd and she has recently started to guard toys and space from my 3 year old male gsd although he is very gentle and respectful of her puppy antics.
They play and sleep together but the puppy randomly out of fear or insecurity snaps and charges towards my boy without much warning or growling first. Please give me some advice so I can help them both to not only coexist with better management but maybe get them to trust each other to be left home alone eventually when the time is ready. thank you very much and wish you even more success in the future.

    • @am72755
      @am72755 7 років тому +3

I'm not a pro, but in my experience it helps for each dog to have space that is their own like a crate. Constantly sharing space, toys, etc can lead to insecurity issues, especially in puppies. It's like giving children their own room.

You’re awesome dude! This really helped me gain confidence in the things I was doing right and how to correct the mistakes. More importantly I shared this with my wife and four kids so we can all be in the same page. I’m no dog trainer, but I do know we’ve had much more success when everyone in the house is on the same page. Thanks!

I've got my 5-year old rescue dog for 4 days now and I think, we are doing ok, he is very intelligent and we are changing his bad habits from previous home.
I think, for rescue dogs it is important to visit vet straightaway, ours has got a lot of neglected health issues now we put it into the plan to deal wit h it.

I 've got rescue cat for 7 years, and only lately we managed to address all his health problems, now he is fine, I hope.
Considering taking a dog, (only from shelter, of course ) we knew the story must be the same. And it is, although we were told, he is absolutely fine .
I don't blame any rescue centers, many thanks for the work, they are doing.
But people - owners have got to think about it, it is a serious financial burden.
And not all families are able to do it from that reason.

Hi. We lost our dog less than 2 months ago at 18 months due to cancer which was filling her lungs with fluids. She was the best animal I ever had and was my true therapy dog but unofficially. We went out and got two female puppies from two different litters because they are guardians for our chickens. Winnie and Molley. Your videos are so informative!! You made me feel better that I have not done trick training as much. They are already crate trained and potty trained for the most part. (13 and 15 weeks old) They listen when I asked them to "be easy" when playing. Molley is 2 weeks older an listens faster but both are pretty amazing. They even come to me when I call them, and I taught them the word "cookie" in case I need them in an emergency. I love your training! I love the bite video! You have amazing content, and I am so excited that I found your channel from my Great Pyrenees group on Facebook!! Thank you so so much for your amazing content! I bought a bunch of the toys you recommended too. Olive is adorable by the way!

I can speak first hand to dogs being very location specific! I confused the HELL out of my 10 yr old rotty by buying and moving into the house right nextdoor to our old one, which has a shared driveway with the old one. Suddenly we were going right upon arriving home instead of left. It took a good 2 weeks for him to start automatically going in the right direction. For a while he'd sit right in the middle of the driveway while I unloaded the groceries or what have you... looking back and forth between both porches wondering which way I was gonna go.

Thank you for your lovely videos. Your videos are so helpful I haven't had a puppy in over 16 years and we rescued a pup from Hurricane Harvey about 2 weeks ago. My husband and I have been working on behavior training and having to rethink how we communicate to a puppy what we want from them. We have two 9 year old dogs who are well behaved and integrated into our lives well and need minimal supervision. After the first two days of bringing the new pup home we had 5 days of perfect potty training behavior and then he regressed probably because we didn't get enough praise for using the bathroom outside via our doggy door, not to mention lack of routine on going outside, and then it rained so it made it harder right when he started figuring it out again. So we've had to figure out what we're doing wrong and rethink our process because it's much different from how we communicate to our older dogs. I appreciate the insight and the depth you go through in your videos. Our little staffy will appreciate it too.

    • @MrSirMoustache
      @MrSirMoustache 7 років тому +1

ok well im not really experienced so take everything i say with a grain of salt. Boxers are extremely intelligent so if you do things well they catch up very soon and they learn extremely quickly. That also means that they understand when they can take advantage over something and be sure that they'll try (at least mine does that dumb pumpkin). So to be honest the best tip is: go to a trainer if you can. Especially if it is your first puppy! this videos are also very very helpfull ;)) [now that we are out of the serious stuff THEY'RE SO CUTE OH MY GOD]

ivi122 also keep in consideration crate training, i live in a flat so that is been a huge help to potty train her. The crate becomes quickly theur safe space and they know they are gonna be there for X time so they try not to go potty inside, which means that as soon as you get home you have to pick em up and bring her/him out. In like 2 weeks she learned where to go (accident do happen but i mean thats very much normal!)

Ian, I have a Great Pyr she is 1 year and I would really really love to teach her to recall... shes intelligent and likes training but the breed is so damned independent gets bored with treats eventually stops taking them (simply walks away). I try to counter this with super excited and praise but that doesn't work with the recall and heel commands cause she gets excited and starts bouncing around to play. Thus I have never gotten her to properly walk on a leash and I'm terrified she will turn into a Disa-Pyreneese if I let her off the leash.
    Any suggestions?

Texas Atheist if she likes food and trying new things; try RAW green beans, carrots (the whole ones), or even freezing 100% NO SUGAR Pumpkin (from a can. (Ingredients: PUMPKIN))!
I have silicone molds for ice, in different shapes, and I put the pumpkin from the can in it and freeze it. My dog loves when I go to the freezer he knows what I'm grabbing (or hopes I'm grabbing them). Lol.
If you try pumpkin, make sure the ingredients literally say:
      Pumpkin
      Nothing else!!!
But yes he loves the green beans and the crunch it makes. Hehe.
The carets are also good for them too.
      :)
Let me know if you try this and if you Fur Baby loves it!

Another important thing to consider is not to bring a new dog into the house until the one you already have is well trained. A second dog should not be a band-aid to "fix" the first dog. The old dog will teach the new dog bad habits and it will only make the situation worse. On the flip side, already having a well trained dog in the house makes training a new puppy that much easier because the puppy can learn by example.

Hi Ian! thanks for the great videos.
Could you maybe make one about how to discourage aggressive behaviour? Our boston terrier is now 1.5 years old and is never aggressive on our longs walks on parks or other areas (he is always playful and doesn't get bothered by bikes, runners, horses or anything else) , but when I bring him out just around our apartment he gets aggressive towards other dogs, bikes or even children. We live on the same place for a year now and this wasn't a problem before, but the other dogs in the neighbourhood were always very territorial towards him and I think he started it up as a "defence" mechanism.
When he starts to growl or pull on the leash I don't really know what is the correct way to stop it and i'm afraid i make the problem worse.
PS: Olive is a cutie pie! :)

Crate training isn’t normal here though, maybe just to sleep in at night when they’re a puppy, but even during the day my puppy had a 70x140cm confinement.
