  • Whether it be Eden Hazard joining Real Madrid, Philippe Coutinho's transfer to Barcelona, or Harry Maguire signing for Manchester United, there has been a spate of hugely expensive transfers that have gone very badly in recent years - in the Premier League and beyond.
In this video, HITC Sevens investigates why that is the case, and specifically why it has become more common within the world of football in recent years.

Maguire is a scapegoat at United. That team has a lot of problems and one of them isn't Maguire, he plays for the shirt.
The problems weren't players like Di Maria, Memphis or Pogba either (notice they were all fine outside of United). The problem was those players were signed to fix a problem that wasn't there - Manchester United didn't need a world class signing, they needed stability and a respect for the shirt again. Which was more of a backroom issue at United than a player one. Ole was hung out to dry. Although two of them were definitely CR7 and Falcao. The club is just a shitshow.

Are you serious? Beckham didn't start half the games in the League.
The reason they won was Van Nistelrooy and Raul's great goalscoring season.
They only won it with 76 points, if Barcelona didn't have a dreadful season, they would have lose it. It was an one horse race and they nearly failed as Barcelona caught up with the signing of an actual center midfielder, Davies.

The players had clearly given up on Emery, they bottled 4th despite needing 6 points from 5 games and Auba and Laca both having their best Arsenal seasons. They also went on to lose the UEL final 4-1 despite being 0-0 at half time. They started his second season poorly and he was making tactical decisions that were crazy like playing Torreira as a no.10. They spent money in Emerys first transfer window and in his second summer. They just didn't give Emery the players he wanted in his second summer and Raul Sanelli lost his job by the next summer due to how badly the Pepe deal went. Arteta has had to completely rejuvenate the squad, get rid of players from both of the previous two managers including 2 superstars whose form practically fell off a cliff after signing big boy contracts for 300k a week. He's started again with a squad of young players attempting to make the UCL for the first time rather than a squad of overpaid mercenaries happy to slum in the UEL. These guys lost out by a single point with three strikers scoring a total of 13 goals. Emerys team had Auba in golden Boot form but was still conceding 22 shots at home at Watford. Emery is an excellent manager, but he exceeds with mid level Spanish teams that he can elevate beyond their resources. Both the massive clubs he's managed he failed to make the grade. At United he has mctominay. A very mediocre player. In the trio of Matic abs herrera he could show some glimpses of his quality

It's pretty obvious to anyone with eyes that Pogba doesn't have the positional awareness to play as a part of a midfield 2, as a three he's wasted too because of that and the fact he offers nothing defensively either, and anyone who watched Juve would have seen him being so good because he's played at a no.8 pushed up the pitch, given a free role and allowed to shirk defensive responsibility, just needed to shuffle back into a position to fill a space and that's it. He's like Steven Gerrard only a lot worse in a positional sense, he going to leave United, end up somewhere that plays him as I stated above again and end up world class again, because there is a world class player in there if you know how to use him. Don't get me wrong, he's never playing under Klopp or Pep, but there are negative managers out there, like Conte, who can get the best out of him simply because their tactics are so cowardly, just let Pogba do his thing with the strikers while you cram the other 8 inside your final 3rd with absolutely no ambition, classic Conte theft tactics, make sure you don't lose first and foremost so you can get lauded as a genius if you nick a win with 28% possession and 2 shots on goal, even though that's not genius it's cowardly. How Spurs and Juve fans could stomach winning 1-0 at home to the worst sides in the league is beyond me, especially when you consider the attacking talent he had at both clubs.

The Frenchman just doesn't do it at all, not because he isn't able to dribble, but because that's not what he played for Atletico nor France. And most importantly - in the position where he would feel best - was Messi. It couldn't success.

Griezmann has been by far the best signing out of that Barcelona 100m+ trio. All things considered he was pretty good for Barcelona, especially in his second season where he was key to their Copa del Rey win and title challenge with 33 goal contributions (more than in his last season at Atlético). On top of his output he always brought immense defensive work rate, very valuable when your strike partner is Messi, and was always available. He was shuffled around different positions within different systems as Barcelona went through three managers during his stay, and was never fully accommodated in favour of Messi and Suárez, but still managed to perform to a decent level and remained a starter throughout. Still an awful transfer given how much they paid for him in transfer fee and especially wages, but they are probably recouping more for him than for Coutinho and Dembélé, who might still leave for nothing, and he cost slightly less than they did in the first place. Coutinho was an unmitigated disaster outside of his first six months, he struggled to perform and to stay fit and was desperately flogged off to Bayern on a loan where he embarrassed Barca in the Champions League. Dembélé has performed much better, but even when fit has spent a lot of time on the bench. Out of all three, Griezmann cost the least, will probably get them the most money back and contributed the most on the pitch.

A player like Jack Grealish for example is not worth 100 mil right now. He could be worth 100 mil but most of his market value comes from an expectation created by the media but not from reality. There is a premium on being a player who counts as "homegrown" as there is a limit on the numbers in a. PL squad who are not. Of the maximum 25 man squad only 17 at most can be "not homegrown". This means the homegrown status has a value. Homegrown does not mean British but a player who played for an FA-affiliated club for three years before they were 21. So taking Liverpool players as an example as I know about them better than other clubs, Kelleher who is Irish is homegrown as he signed up at the LFC academy as a youngster but Robertson counts as not homegrown as he played for Scottish teams as a young man.

From a Club that has beaten Borussia Dortmund, Twente, Derby County and many others to a club that was forced from their own stadium, reduced to nothing during the Bosnian War, becoming a mediocre top-level team in the 00s to nearly being forced into folding in 2016 to its amazing rise back to the top-level football which culminated in return to Europe after 33 years which has seen elimination of Coleraine before a suprising win over AEK Athens before exiting 3rd Round against Elfsborg IF and recently continuing in the Cup win this season which has ensured another European summer next season

Expensive transfers come with lot of expectations,
CR7 to Madrid and to Juve perhaps is one of the transfer that met and exceeded the expectation, but other recent expensive transfers have not lived up to the hype
Pogba, Neymar, Mcguire, Dembele, Coutinho, Hazard. BALE did perform well and he did deliver the Champions league with his two goals against Liverpool in the final, but Bale did not seem to be that committed to REAL Madrid as other players at Madrid, Maybe Bales attitude seems so, but he is 100% committed to performance.

I think another thing that has changed people's perception has been their ability to not watch players, and therefore kind of being able to claim naivety to their brilliance. With access to essentially all the games in most of Europe's top leagues throughout the season, people can choose watch or not watch what ever they want. They're not limited to what's on TV like it used to be where you would be forced to watch team x vs. team y if you wanted to watch any foot ball at all. Where you would see lots of the top signings a handful of times throughout the season, and it became hard to label them failures after seeing them play even often just a handful of times.

IMO, if you pay over 50M for a player you would expect them to be able to adapt to whatever team they join fairly well and, maybe not have astronomical impact, contribute to the success of the team. But the market inflates the prices of lots of players and adds stupid amounts of pressure on players.
I forget which podcast I was listening to that described some of these transfer fees as having “The Zaha tax” or something to that affect. When a specific player is important to their club than they would be to whatever club wants to sign them and thus their value is insanely inflated. So a player that is really worth about 20M costs 50M to sign.
Kane is a good example of this. He is worth 150M to Spurs bc he is their star player, a leader in the squad and (until this season) their top scorer (also Levy is a notoriously tough negotiator). But his actual value is probably 80-100M
There’s also a league tax if the player is moving within the same league. Which is probably one reason why Maguire, who at the time might have been worth 30-40M, ended up costing United 80M (as he was one of Leicester’s best players, English and moving within the Prem)

The reason for this is because of the high inflation of money in the football world, certain teams, players and agents have started exploiting transfers for their own profit, thus the majority of recent high money transfers have been failures, because those players aren't worth even close to what they have been sold for and once they got their big paycheck, they don't even bother playing to their actual value, so it turns out even worse.

The average transfer fee has increased a lot in recent years. In any given year or period of time, you have a X% failure rate for transfers. If you keep it, by the sheer increase of average transfer fees it will seem like the most expensive transfers are failures, when it's more a case of more money being paid in general than the players themselves. In other words, teams have been willing to spend more money to secure their targets than 10 or 20 years ago.

Back when Ronaldo and Zidane played, the feat of wining the World Cup meant a lot more than it does now. This is because back then, Boca Juniors won the Intercontinental Cup in 2000 and 2003 (could've won the Club World Cup in 2001 had it been contested) and three Brazilian clubs, Corinthians, Sao Paulo and Internacional, won the Club World Cup in a row in between 2000, 2005 and 2006. So clearly, club competition was much more even between Europe and South America (at least the big two) and to prove oneself it was imperative to win the World Cup.
Today however, the world is much more focused on UEFA than ever before, so being decisive in winning the Champion's League even just a couple of times undoubtly means a player is on his way of becoming Ballon d'Or candidate, this is simply because the gap in level between South American and European top clubs have become astornomical since the mid 2000s, and thus winning the Club World Cup has become almost a cake walk for European teams, and the same can be said about the World Cup in regards to the big 4 or 5 National Teams in Europe since their players mostly play in their leagues and often for the same teamsas well.
I remember back in the late 2000s when I read comments from European fans, talking about the Champions League as if it was the utmost competition in the world and myself shrugging it off as blatant shenaningans on their behalf; now, while a part of me still thinks winning the World Cup is a lot more difficult than winning the Champion's League, I do concur, and can't help but agree, that besides an incredibly outlandish chance in a million such as M'Bappe, the top 10/20 best players in a World Cup will undboutly have been amongst the top 10/15 players in the last three to five UEFA Champions League.
The thing Neymar having been labeled as a faluire is because not only has him being unable to win the World Cup with Brazil like Ronaldo did, but because he left Barcelona at a time the team was still debatible a top3 team in the world, to go for a club such as PSG, that, even at that time, were seen as perennial underachievers, even more so than these days, and after five years (one more year than his former club Barcelona) of ever perfecting PSG with better and better top class signings, has remained trophy-less at the Champions League nontheless.

I would like to say that the jury should be out on one of two things - whether Maguire was a failure at all, and further if that’s deemed too controversial whether his form was the sole reason.
If you look at the goals conceded totals for the two seasons prior to this just gone, they’ve conceded less goals than when they signed him. He is, for those who actually see games, the player before Fernandes who they build around. His progressive passing is integral to their build up play and has been ever since he joined. He was an important player as they finished second, and there’s a clear reason why he’s been a favourite of United managers. He’s a very competent centre back. It’s easy to make someone look awful if you scrutinise every single mistake they make, and that’s given a false impression of his form for the club. The only true criticism could be that he hasn’t played to the level of Van Dijk…
But then, the club he joined, and this is the main point, was an utter mess then and still is now. There’s a large contingent who are simply incompetent (no, not him, Fred, Matic, Mata, Rashford, Lindelof, Dalot, AWB, Telles, Greenwood, McT) and another who have awful attitude (Pogba and Martial have also been woeful - they’re definite failures) and the blend is poor because United signed talented individuals with no view to chemistry. Expecting anyone to be the steadying ship of that United team was going to be an impossible task regardless of transfer fee. Take Varane - he has performed far worse than Maguire having arrived from a much more successful team. If Maguire played for a club with genius tactics and players who gel together, he would be much more highly regarded. Because he deals with unholy levels of responsibility both defensively and offensively because of team mate limitations, his merits aren’t recognised because they’re too regular and expected, whereas his gaffs are too easy to spot and easy to use as bait.
That said, there are two reasons he’ll always be a “failure” in popular opinion. The price (and if they win a league title at any point when he’s still there, he’s been worth every penny, this team is beyond help), and the abhorrent hate he receives from systemically prejudiced social media mobs. Is it true? To the level of failure alleged by most, not in the slightest. But yes, he hasn’t worked out. And given the United team, it’s hard to see how anyone could’ve, whether they came for four figures or nine.

      Varane worse than maguire!!!!!!
I was thinking you were making a decent point up until then, although I think you're giving maguire way to much benefit of the doubt. His positional sense has been awful this season which greatly affects him because he's incredibly slow, his attempts to carry the ball from the back have mostly been laughable and worst of all he constantly stands off attackers allowing them extra space to either shoot or dribble past him. Is there a decent dominant in the air centre back in him??, Yes and he was exactly that last season but his form this season leaves serious question marks over his starting spot and leadership qualities. I personally would keep him only because he fills a homegrown quota and is a decent rotation option for a top side but realistically he wouldn't start for man City or Liverpool, which is exactly why city didn't sign him. They probably thought 80 million was a massive over spend for a rotation option, turns out city's recruitment team were 100% spot on.

Man United is a club where any player joining is only six weeks from "Announce" to "Out" twitter posts.
