The best part about Kevin is that he is a regular guy. He isn't a career man in television. He was in finance when they asked him to host the show. He asks the questions the average homeowner would ask because he is an average homeowner. He also sees the things that are connected to experiences a homeowner should worry about. These include going to places that simulate weather damage, fires, and where certain materials come from.
Kevin is such a crucial part of This Old House. One of the things I observed right away when I started watching (primarily in videos on topics I was familiar with) would be that the other crew members, while obviously great, can sometimes jump ahead, assuming some part of the project is obvious to viewers. Kevin does a great job at interrupting at the right moments with a question (that he likely already knows the answer to) that gives them an opportunity to explain it in more depth or cover the part they skipped. You can't blame them... it's called the "curse of knowledge" - not remembering what it was like to not know something that you're now an expert on. Kevin is great at breaking that "curse of knowledge" and remembering what it was like to not know something so that the other crew can share their knowledge more effectively.

Imagine the impression Kevin must have made on the TOH production team when they filmed with him for that house call. Kudos to the producers for making a brilliant but brave decision to go out on a limb and hire him, and to Kevin for stepping into that new adventure. It paid off in spades.
I met you at a wrap party in Boston a couple years ago and got to meet the whole gang, except for Roger. It was the thrill of my life. Everyone was exactly how you'd think they would be. Just wonderful human beings. I've been watching the reruns of TOH in reverse seasons and am now in the Steve years. It's kinda interesting how similar you and Steve are...even the words you use. The transition of hosts was seamless. Kudos to the producers for picking u 😁👍

This Old House was always a great show I could watch with my Dad as a kid and be able to connect. Over the years I grew to love it. I remember your first appearance and then seeing you join the team, always just thought it was a setup lol. I’m a Jack off all trades guy diy guy myself. If there was something needed done when I was growing up my Dad had my brother and me doing it right along side him. Like Kevin, I grew up watching this on PBS with my dad and they wouldn’t have had to ask me twice to work along side this group of guys! I’d have been like a stray that you feed once and never leaves!
Aw Kevin, it was a breath of fresh air when you came on the show…. My dad would watch the show all the time and those old guys were like my dad’s friends and I didn’t relate. When you came on… I could relate. The show wouldn’t be were it is today without you
Kevin has done a great job as host of Ask/ This old House 🏠. I think Bob Vila, and Steve Thomas did a good job. But Kevin has gave the shows a more personal touch for the audience to connect to
I dont know, I like Bob Vila but I felt like on TOH and on his solo Home Again show he didnt know when to shut up. Usually you ask a question and let the tradesmen explain but Bob always had to cut em of and interject his point. I really liked the other Bob Riley on the Home Again series.
Kevin - The show stood up on its own, but you made the show stand out. I can't say how glad I was when you came on board. You're just a simple American guy, with the power of delivery, and the ability to share, and the charm that makes the show warm and inviting. You're the glue that made all the boards stick - and that's not easy with hardwood! Thanks for being part of American Culture - you and the entire team at TOS - I only hope you continue to inspire more generations. We need more like you all.

I think Kevin is the best host they've ever had. Besides being relatable to the audience, he is witty and has a charisma like a good Late-night talk show host. When i look back at all the previous hosts, including Bob Vila, I never saw that in any of them.
I remember that episode. I was watching the show with my husband on a Saturday night. Then I remember hearing about you hosting Ask this Old House. You are a wonderful addition to the This Old House family. The best parts are watching how you all get along. It's genuine. Also, you get involved, hands on. Have a new-found respect for this guy. I grew up with the OG’s on the TV as my Dad would watch but being only 34, I’ve seen Kevin online and was always curious how he landed the role. Props to him and keep it up if you’re reading this Kevin!

I’m not old enough or have watched the Bob Vila days, so I fell in love with the show when Steve Thomas was the host, so it took me a while to come around on Kevin back in his starkly seasons, just because I was a Steve loyalist. But, they definitely chose right, because Kevin’s been the host for almost half of the entire run now. Thanks for all you do, and everyone does, to make the shows happen.
I got used to seeing Bob Vila so Kevin's appearance on the show took some time to get used to. I enjoyed watching the show on the weekends. That and Norm Abram and hometime. My father was a carpenter and he and I would watch all these shows.
Been watching TOH since Bob Vila days. When Kevin first started hosting, I wasn’t sure about him. But he has gotten better and better and is by far the best of the hosts.
I've liked Kevin since the beginning. I watched his wallpaper episode when it first aired - and he has grown into the role tremendously! I think he's fashioned himself to fit perfectly into the role and he's done a great job ever since! He earned the respect of the subject matter experts Norm Abrams and Tom Silva (Tommy!) and has presented the hard times with honesty and sober approaches that have held true to the show's. It hasn't been at all about the host since he's been there, it's been about the teachers - which has made it better than before. I liked Steve Thomas, but in many ways he followed the approach that Bob Vila took - where (and rightly on the part of the producers) Kevin hasn't. Since Kevin was pulled from having been a regular homeowner on an episode, the focus on the regular homeowner has been really central to "Ask TOH" which I think was the desire leading to them asking him in the first place! The whole TOH team rocks my socks off every week, and I can't thank them all enough!
I was not a fan of Bob Villa, I loved Steve Thomas and I equally love Kevin. You have been a great addition all these years. Thank you for being part of TOH and ATOH, you helped make the show as good as when Steve was there, and that was a HUGE ask.
