    I take it he has not heard of the scottish lowlander sword. The replica I got to handle a while back was about 67 to 67.5 inches.

    Me, during the forge doors episode: “this is serious over engineering, something will go wrong and y’all will just end up propping the door up and leaving it.” This episode: “forge doors broke day one.” I give it either another break, or 2 weeks and we won’t see the doors ever move again 😂 good luck figuring it out though!

    Given the high amount of sparks, filings, iron and dust around the workshop, I would definitely put some filters over the fan to prevent damage

    i love Alec's approach to challenges, like instead of getting angry that the forge doors stopped working, he just accepted it and went on to investigate what the problem might be. hats off to you.

      I'd love to see their reaction to his stuff. From what I've seen, they likely haven't (Alec tends to show his appreciation for other cool channels).
      That said, Mike doesn't even try to make accurate historical or functional stuff, so I think it'd be a clash of styles to see them working together, which is something I keep thinking I'd like to see. On something like this, probably not good. On something more 'fantasy' inspired, I'd love to see them collaborate. ;)

    Make it of a 3 million layer billet... Who knows how long the series might go. Don't go setting limits on yourselves lads!

      After their initial weld and stack, they had 247 layers. Drawing the bar out, cutting it in half, stacking again, would require it be done 12 times to get over the 1M count. 13 times would be 2M and 14 would be 4M. However, they usually cut and stack using multiple pieces so the number of forge welds will be considerably lower and yet retain the requisite layer count.

      I love that he shows his mistakes and failures. Then he analyzes what went wrong and how to fix it. And that sometimes "fixing" it is to just start over armed with better knowledge. I also love his constant pursuit of learning new things.
      Watching him forge something is like watching a microcosm of how to tackle life.
      So long as things are done in a safe and logical manner, most of the time there is no such thing as failure so catastrophic that you can't start again. So long as we avoid death and injury (and breaking equipment), the only real stakes are some wasted material. Can't even say time was lost, because that time was exchanged for valuable knowledge and skills.
      Also, he makes blacksmithing look really fun for some reason.

      I thought you weren't supposed to wear gloves when working with machines with fast moving parts, so they don't snag the glove and take your hand along for the ride

      @@giggityguy nah depends on what type of machine. Abrasives tends to grind trough gloves rather than pull them. Machines like lathes, Mills and drillpresses I would be very carfull around if using gloves.
      But beltgrinders, angelgrinders and so on is more risk to get injured on if not using gloves.
      The second it takes to grind a whole in a thin glove has saved my fingers several times from serious injuri.

      They either need to build a new very tall oil tube just for this quench or they could quench sideways, straight into the oil with the small side of the blade going into the oil first. Would of course be more risky that way.

      Already been done by other channels (more than once) like Man at arms. I personally think staying away from movie/video game weapons (he did one before Gendry's hammer from Got) is better as it gives them more freedom.

    hey guys, i think it is really ambitious to forge a Zweihander sword, especially with 2 million layers. it is going to be as beautiful as all your projects are, I'm sure. this may run take up to 20 - 25 episodes to take on such a project, with everything else you two are up to. cherrs !

    63" is actually a relatively small zweihander, they came up to 84", and the longest claymore ever recorded was 88"

      Well the viking sword was 23 or 24 episodes and this is going to be much bigger . . . plus they might mess up and have to start over part of the way through sooooo

      @@felix5657 thats quite normal and acceptable for anyone without a german keyboard map. The german solution to use ae, oe and ue when äöü are not avaiable is pretty much unknown outside germany.

    There were ceremonial flamberges much, much longer... I believe the longest ever was just over two meters / Six foot six inches.
    I should also note the two of you have my utter respect. You are always pushing the limits of your skills and learning new techniques and trying new things. Success? Failure? Learning is the ultimate key, here!

    Fun fact, not only was the zweihander a parade sword, but was also used to fight with pikemen and to compete with spears while still being able to weird a sword.
