Hey Alec, I’m an Electrical Engineer and could build you a custom forge door control PCB with high-temp fiberglass and components. Send me a message!

Send him an email if you can. You'd get better traction that here in the comments.

When Alec built the forge doors I instantly remembered that one time he built the pressure box
Me, during the forge doors episode: “this is serious over engineering, something will go wrong and y’all will just end up propping the door up and leaving it.” This episode: “forge doors broke day one.” I give it either another break, or 2 weeks and we won’t see the doors ever move again 😂 good luck figuring it out though!
agreed. id ditch the electronics in favor of a mechanical foot pedal pulling the wires and a locking mechanism...
Given the high amount of sparks, filings, iron and dust around the workshop, I would definitely put some filters over the fan to prevent damage
This.
Does he not already have filters?
I'd assume most people do, even outside of metal work.
They set up a whole ventilated room just for grinding and sanding. Trying to minimize the dust and grime around the shop.
@@yoursexualizedgrandparents6929 Not from what was shown of the control box. Of course, he doesn't have venting slots either, so...
@@Thadaloneous true, but that only accounts for the grinding room, not for the scale from forging, charcoal, general dust etc.

It's bloody gorgeous!
"Yes! The most gorgeous POMMEL we ever done. Now, on our next episode we will be continuing the blade, We are about half way there."

al-loo-min-e--ium
I was down here to make a similar comment! "Cracking on?" Maybe Will has been spending too much time with Alec...
i love Alec's approach to challenges, like instead of getting angry that the forge doors stopped working, he just accepted it and went on to investigate what the problem might be. hats off to you.

@@Argosh true but I was expecting to get a little bit more into the video before it broke

"Its crazy to think of a sword bigger than this one!"
Michael Cthulu has joined the chat...
I'd love to see their reaction to his stuff. From what I've seen, they likely haven't (Alec tends to show his appreciation for other cool channels).
That said, Mike doesn't even try to make accurate historical or functional stuff, so I think it'd be a clash of styles to see them working together, which is something I keep thinking I'd like to see. On something like this, probably not good. On something more 'fantasy' inspired, I'd love to see them collaborate. ;)
@@Broadpaw_Fox yeah for sure. I'm thinking of their reaction to the bunker buster sword or the cyborg axe he made
Michael doesn't make swords, he makes *SWORDS!*
@@Broadpaw_Fox He's mentioned Mike at least once and expressed admiration for him.

Make it of a 3 million layer billet... Who knows how long the series might go. Don't go setting limits on yourselves lads!
There's gotta be a reason for them to start over.
After their initial weld and stack, they had 247 layers. Drawing the bar out, cutting it in half, stacking again, would require it be done 12 times to get over the 1M count. 13 times would be 2M and 14 would be 4M. However, they usually cut and stack using multiple pieces so the number of forge welds will be considerably lower and yet retain the requisite layer count.
My prediction:
15 episodes over 3 months and this will include one do-over and no less than three oopsies by Alec which will cause lost time lol
Either way I’m here for it
'no less than 3 oopsies' is basically the motto for the whole show 😂
I love that he shows his mistakes and failures. Then he analyzes what went wrong and how to fix it. And that sometimes "fixing" it is to just start over armed with better knowledge. I also love his constant pursuit of learning new things.
Watching him forge something is like watching a microcosm of how to tackle life.
So long as things are done in a safe and logical manner, most of the time there is no such thing as failure so catastrophic that you can't start again. So long as we avoid death and injury (and breaking equipment), the only real stakes are some wasted material. Can't even say time was lost, because that time was exchanged for valuable knowledge and skills.
Also, he makes blacksmithing look really fun for some reason.
it's the journey...
Oh and try to say Zweihänder with a hard "z" like: Tsweihänder
The much more difficult "händer" part is beautful, btw.
What's next? Dreihänder? LOL :-D

Alecs pronounciation of zweihänder is spot on.
Nice to see Will wearing gloves in the grinding room 😅
Probably a good thing to start using gloves while most of his fingers is still intact 😁
My old master told something equal...
I thought you weren't supposed to wear gloves when working with machines with fast moving parts, so they don't snag the glove and take your hand along for the ride
@@giggityguy you aren't supposed to but those pieces are so long his hands can stay way away from the moving parts of the grinder
@@giggityguy nah depends on what type of machine. Abrasives tends to grind trough gloves rather than pull them. Machines like lathes, Mills and drillpresses I would be very carfull around if using gloves.
But beltgrinders, angelgrinders and so on is more risk to get injured on if not using gloves.
The second it takes to grind a whole in a thin glove has saved my fingers several times from serious injuri.

I wonder how the quench is gonna go. Either way I’m watching
They either need to build a new very tall oil tube just for this quench or they could quench sideways, straight into the oil with the small side of the blade going into the oil first. Would of course be more risky that way.
Hang it off the balcony to drop it down a 6ft quench tube 😂🤘

Great project idea! I have always loved your longer, ambitious projects, like the kris, the katana, the viking sword -- you always do so much learning and always end up with something beautiful!

Zweihander the two hilted wavy giant piece of glorious German engineering
My German heart is happy
I am stunned, Alec and Wil, that you did not grind off the outer surfaces of the steel before you clamped and welded them together. Stunned. I've seen so many failures of Damascus steel attempts on your favorite show, Forged in Fire, that I am stunned. Good luck. You'll need it!
Sooooo Alec, if it's a layer for every subscriber in essence I own a layer of that magnificent sword?
