@@diggahchrizz That is so wrong, Volvo 5 cylinder is a completely different motor. But Audi did have some legendary 5 cylinder engines as well. Audi RS2 and Volvo 850 T-5R were both helped by Porsche.

The Block is very robust. There is prescedent to Turbo Charge it. Then it becomes quite fast... I was Lead engineer on last Continental Supersport engine so I know a thing or two about Turbo charging VR engines....

GM offered a 3.5 liter inline 5 in the first generation of the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon pickups that made 220 HP. I used to own one with a manual transmission and it was a lot of fun to drive.
3.5, then they upped it to a 3.7.

Our Dutch Le Mans winner Jantje Lammers in the Volvo 850 BTCC. I think they (TWR) also did a smart trick with the cylinderhead to get valveangles different to gain a load of extra power.

and the other rather rare: Fiat 5cyl, in Coupe, Stilo, Marea f.e. :)

Dude, you need to make a 3cyl special.. their sound is also very particular, also, a 3 cyl @11.900 rpm has owned the sub 1000cc land speed record since the 80's..
I5 engines had amazing sound. For me the best kind of engine, weight a bit more than an I4, and powerful almost an I6. Normally not balanced at all, but for some use, a counterweight shaft is enough. Good job, thanks!

Great video my friend. My brother in-law had an Acura Vigor and at the time was quite the motor and oddball at the time here in the N. America. Had decent torque for the time but in a very nice interior. Love watching every video as soon as you release it, I bet new material is getting tough. Here in Brazil we have a Mercedes OM355/5 9.5 liters truck engine. With a peculiar sound.

I loved the naturally aspirated 5banger in the Mercedes 190D-2.5 my parents had.
My mother broke it in and it ran 185kmh on the german autobahn.
Never heard of a 5cyl Honda…nice content as always! And as far as I know the Mercedes OM605 2.5L 83kw 5cyl and the OM606 3.0L 6cyl 100kw are the most powerful naturally aspirated mass produced diesel engines if you calculate kw per liter of displacement (33.3kw per liter). I owned 1994 E300 with the 3.0L 100kw diesel - great engine ant very smooth for a diesel.
Back in about 2000s’ a friend of mine had a 1987 Audi 90 2.3L 5cyl 100kw. It was fast for it’s time (8.8s to 100km/h) and man did it sound great!
How is the tuning ability of this engine? Since tuning the toyota diesel is pretty popular in my country and will be very interesting to tune this merc diesel engine
Great video but my favorite 5 cyl engine is still the 2.4jtd 20v, i have it in my alfa 156 and produces 220hp with chip tuning, love the sound love the proformance, a great engine

You are too young to remember Richard Rydell rocking his 850R in BTCC. What a championship it was! It had everything that motorsport is lacking today. Personalities, balls, aggression, sneakyness...and relatively inexpensive cars that could be replaced.
Volvo 2.5 n/a with a straight pipe is highly underrated imo. Sounds almost like a e60 m5

You are THE MAN, VisioRacer, when it comes to hunting down rare engines. I only heard of GM's V5 when I was working there in the early 80's, and not since. And you hunted it down in a museum in Michigan. Your 5-cylinder videos are some of my favorites, and I always want to buy a 5-cylinder car when I watch them. Now I'm going to search for a GMC Canyon with a 5-cylinder 3.7L Atlas and 5-speed manual transmission.
Buy it, you will love it. I miss owning my five-cylinder, the Bravo HGT. That thing was snappy for a 147 hp 2.0L 20V engine.

Really nice video, I also have a soft spot for 5 cylinder engines. I had a fiat Bravo HGT many years a go and now own a TTRS. Both cars sound amazing.
My very first car was a '92 Acura Vigor GS. What a fantastic sound. Car had some pickup, too: even though mine was an automatic and bone stock, it would hold 120mph pretty well. It needed a splitter, though, because it felt like it was floating at that speed.

Audi 5 cylinder.My friend who has past now. followed me with it while I was in my Peugeot 505 turboS setting up the car for racing.
Most folks don't get why 5 cylinders is better. Just like any division of 3 is better than 2. Your best racing engines for the most part were V12's, a number divisible by 3 and a crank plane degree divisions of 120 degrees. So 6's, and V12's produce horsepower pulses and torque every 120 degrees as opposed to an engine divisible by 2 like a V8, which has power pulses every 180 degrees. A 5 cylinder engine is even better, like an inline 5 or V10 as they produce power pulses every 72 degrees. 360/5=72. That is the true reason 5 cylinders are a smoother, better running engine whether diesel, motorcycle, performance car or just plain old every day driver. As a result of them running so much smoother, they last a lot longer too, as there is less non consonant vibration. Most folks don't know enough about engine design or volumetric efficiency to understand this.
Man, 12, 10 and 6 are also divisible by 2, a 5 cylinder doesnt produce power pulses every 72°, a V8 doesnt produce power pulses every 180°, volumetric efficency doesnt relate to being smooth or not...

Do you have any idea or concept of what exhaust port scavenging is and how it relates to crank plane phasing and exhaust pulses??? Probably not. But the more pulses you have per engine revolution, the more scavenging you have and thus the more efficiency. You just need to keep your trolling to yourself.

-A 5 cylinder fires every 144°, 72° is the crank plane phasing.
-An 8 cylinder fires every 90°, 180° is the crank plane phasing, and only in flat plane crankshafts.
-Scavenging improves engine power, not smoothness. Smoothness depends on crankshaft angles, firing order and spacing.
You are the one that say 12 is not divisible by 2 and tries to tell me that i have no clue about what im talking. Go to the highschool before trying to look intelligent, bigbrained.
The Kawasaki-Millyard H2 1250 is also a great sounding 2 stroke 5 cylinder. One of the best sounding engines imo

Volvo and TWR were only able to run the 850 wagon/estate in the BTCC for the 1994 season and afterwards they had to switch to the sedan/saloon because the other teams said that the wagon body was a unfair aerodynamic advantage.
