- Straight Five Cylinder Engine:
The straight-five engine, also referred to as an inline-five engine, abbreviated I5, is a piston engine with five cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankshaft.
Straight-five engines are typically shorter than straight-six engines, making them easier to fit transversely in an engine bay. Straight-five engines are smoother running than straight-four engines, shorter than straight-six engines, and narrower than V engines and flat engines.
VR5 Engine:
Volkswagen introduced the first V5 engine, though this engine is not a true twin-bank V engine, but rather a VR5, or staggered bank straight-5 engine, and therefore not a true V5.
Volkswagen’s VR5 engine was a unique piece of automotive history Developed in the 1990s. While functioning much like an inline-five engine, the VR5 was its own animal. With three cylinders on one side and two on the other, the VR5 required a whole bunch of complex engineering to keep it balanced and innovative design decisions to get it to breathe.
The interesting thing is the cylinders are at a 15-degree angle. To get the 15-degree cylinders not to contact each other, they pushed the cylinder outboard and offset them.
V5 Engine:
The V5 engine was developed as a direct result of major changes to the regulations for the World Championship motorcycle road racing 500 cc class for the 2002 season.
The name of the class was modified to MotoGP, and while two-stroke engines remained limited to 500 cc and four cylinders, four-stroke engines were now allowed to be as large as 990cc and from three to six cylinders which led many teams to switch to four-stroke designs.

I own a B5244t5, drinking 8.2 l/100 kms, I'm fairly happy with that.
I have a Fiat Coupe 20vt, 220hp coupled to a 6 speed manual gear box does give it some go, and the 5 cylinder really sounds great.
cute, my coupe is 400bhp
VW had 5 cyls for many years. I own a 5 cyl rabbit. The VW 2006 2.5 is half of a Lamborghini v10.
They still make the 5cyl for the Audi lines I believe
Fanboy myth ... Ulrich Beretsky based the 07k on the old IMSA GTO engine not on a Lamborghini motor.......
Lmao that is not half of a Lambo motor just because it’s a 5 cylinder made by the VAG complete different caliber’s dude you want half of a Lambo motor? Get a TTRS.
I drive a 2.5L I5 Jetta, and gotta say I love it. It's not the fastest accelerating reasonably priced car out there by any means, however the highway capacity and sound are above the competition in my opinion.
Mercedes 2.7 diesel.
Torque and economy and a wonderful warbling on power sounds I can't get enough! Sprinter
I have 3.5 l i5 in my 2005 Chevy Colorado. It’s surprisingly peppy but fuel mileage isn’t great. Just turned over 108k mi. So far so good
Mine has 265k and its still kicking like a champ
I have an old SEAT Toledo V5. It sounds great and goes well. Very torquey and good power if a little thirsty
Thanks for your V5 engine information 👍👍
6:20 Finally, the VR engine is correctly described. The VR is German for Verkürzt Reihen or loosely translated as Shorten Inline in English. The reason why it wasn't called the VR5 but V5 is that for marketing purposes. The word VR5 is too mouthful and too complex for salespeople, and only designers, engineers and enthusiasts can describe it correctly. Double the VR5 then you get a W10 engine in the 72° V bank.
7:58 That's the incorrect picture of the VR5 4-valve.
Awesome explanation ❤️
I own 2 Jetta Sportwagons with 5 cylinder engines. Fair gas mileage, smooth, dependable, and no balance shafts, love them.
I had a 1982 Scirocco, great condition except high mileage on engine and transmission. I had bought the car new, and truly loved it. My son, who is now a Master Tech with VW and Mercedes, and I put a 5 cylinder Audi engine in it. Super fun pocket rocket.
I have a VW Bus T4 with a 5 Cylinder 2.5l diesel motor and my carmechanic- master said, that the best motor in a VW bus, and im realy happy
I have Volvo 2.4T 5cyl (B5254T) with very smooth power build-up and a lovely drum sound on acceleration! Absolutely love it. Used to have an 850TDI which sounded a little more brutal. Wouldn't prefer anything else except for a powerful American V8 perhaps :)
At first thanks for this UA-camrs for according to our knowledge for uploading videos and thanks too much for everything clearly discribeing part by part I am from Bangladesh and I am also a engineering students too I have very helping for this UA-camrs Tnsm for everything 😇❤️✨
Have VW Passat(5.5) with V5 170hp AZX engine type.
Got the same one more than 10years ago....so i bought it again this year. Love the sound of the engine!!!
But i never know, that many cars got 5cylinder engine....nice to know.
I didnt know there was a production V5 engine.
The ford Focus ST & RS you used both have 4 cylinders in. I know as I have the Focus ST with the 5 pot engine and it is by far the best sounding 5 pot. The RS shares the same engine just with uprated internals to handle the extra horsepower.
I was gonna say haha. I have one myself and it sounds absolutely glorious.
the volvo 5 cylinder is the roughest most unrefined sounding 5 pot ive ever heard. has a very strange underlying note for a 5 and quite describe what it is about it that makes it so strange sounding. which is odd as I've been shredding guuitar for 22 years and have an ear for notation.
I've learnt a lot
I have the 3.2L MZ-CD I-5, aka Duratorq I-5, so far no complaints...
Very interesting and expertly presented. I look at all these engineering marvels and their complexities, yet I regard the fact that they are mostly all going the way of obsolescence because of the electric motor, powered by either batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. I suppose there will always be a niche for IC engines, but if so, the fuel will not likely be hydrocarbons, but either hydrogen or ammonia.
I get nostalgic about all this, but this is the way of progress. I love the sound of the racing versions of these power plants. Oh well, I'm not going to be on this earth to experience very much of all that anyway.
Audi 80 B4 with 2.3 NG best engine especially the sound
I have a Mercedes CLK270 with an inline 5 diesel engine. I love it.
i have a fiat coupe 20v 5 cylinder turbo running 400bhp coupled to a 6 speed manual. sounds unreal. the only 5 cylinder that actually sounds like a v10, im running a stage 3 hybrid turbo with 3 inch catless straight pipe.
Volvo s60 2.4i 5 cylinders 😌😌 great engine sound and decent performance at 170Hp.
Happy with that daily Car. ✔️
I love my Focus XR5 !
I have a 5 cylinder 602 Mercedes-Benz 2.5 turbo diesel I get 38 mpg highway you didn’t mention or the newer Mercedes-Benz like the om605
I have a Skoda Octavia II 2,5MPI R5 (engine with VW Jetta US), Fiat Marea 2.0 20V R5, friends have Fiat Stilo 2.4 20V R5, Lancia Thesis 2,4 JTD R5, Volvo XC70 2,5T R5.
I have an audi 200 avant with a 2.2 10 valve inline 5
I have a late model Audi TTRS. For a 2.5 liter engine..wow😮
Good video. But I recognize some of what you're saying here, that is taken directly as a carbon copy out of the video that Car Throttle did on the 5-pot some several years ago. Though I'll say that you went into more detail than they did.
I love my 5-cyl Jetta
I5 works wonders for turbo diesels
🔥
Ada di jumbo, ada di Australia, ada di Amerika. Khusus anak kecil. Lewat Mercedes Benz.
I didn't knew that actual V5 is real thing
I think great engine.
I am an Automobile engineer aspirant , so what all computer skills I must learn??
R u talking abt softwares?
@@aakashchheda8688 yeah i mean what all programming languages i must learn also except programming languages what more should I learn?
As an automobile engineer, check my channel, you will like it.
Good, well-researched video which would be much more pleasant to listen to if it had a real human reading the text rather than text-to-speech.
I am a great fan of 5 cylinder engines, mainly for their sound and feel.
In a world of increasing sameness, people will seek out these qualities. Just look at Harley Davidson for proof of this.
Can someone explain why the 990cc Honda puts out 260 HP while the 2300cc VW ( over double the displacement )puts out 180 HP ( 80 HP less )
Racing motorcycle tech has always been more efficient and advanced compared to road vehicles
@@jediprowen explain the S2000 then
Horsepower is a product of torque made at a given rpm over 5252. This gives you your horsepower measurement at those revs. So where the honda gp engine makes 260hp will be somewhere in the mid teen thousand rev range. Which means the torque number is actually quite low. The vr5 doesnt quite rev to 7 thousand, so its measure of horsepower suffers.
We’ll say the honda makes its 260hp at 14,000rpm for arguments sake, i dont know the specifics. If you multiply 260 by 5252 and then divide by 14000, you should end up with less than 100 lbs/ft of raw torque. The power is in the speed of the engine.
On the contrary, with the vr5, makes its 170hp at around 6000 revs. So we do 170 x 5252 and divide that by 6000 to end up with 150 ft/lbs. Which is quite torquey for a small displacement N/A engine.
Fact of the matter is, if the v5 was engineered to make its peak power at 14,000 like the honda, it would far exceed the hondas power figures. Displacement is everything.
08’ vw beetle 2.5 i5cylinder
👍
Scania DC09 074A
Golf 4 vr5 170 AQN
5 cylinder is the way
I believe its difficult to practically balance 5 cylinder engine.
The only way is to made a 75.5 degrees V engine like the Honda RC211V i think.
MTU 5R 890 😄

Does anybody know if any company has ever built a 3-W , 6-W engine OR a 9-W engine ?
How can you not mention the greatest 5 pot engine ever the audi 20v turbo from the audi sport quattro rally car through to the audi urquattro 20v and s2.
