A great play, a great film and a great radio adaptation of ‘The Letter.’ This was an era when actors like Bette Davis and Vincent Price were on ‘top of their game’ by demonstrating great acting skills. They knew their craft backwards - and never failed to deliver superb performances in whatever film they appeared in.

In the film too, as always. His character is crushed emotionally. Wonderful acting. I read somewhere he lost a leg in ww1. He had great acting range. And that voice! ;)

Herbert Marshall was wounded serving in WW1, losing a leg.
Incredibly, several other actors who later found success in Hollywood also served in the same regiment as Marshall, the London Scottish Regiment.
Ronald Colman, Claude Rains, Basil Radford and Cecil Hardwicke all served in this regiment in WW1.

Commentary is Fascinating history of WW2, everyone helped to win in some way, from soldier canteens to saved cooking fats. And we can't get folks to recycle or compost. Imagine , medicines from kitchen waste. Thanks for this. It helps me understand my parents better, as they were young during this time.

Fabulous. Bette’s character leaving a trail of distrust and destruction, and not really caring one whit.

Read the original story. It almost has nothing to do with this play. Somerset Maugham. The Letter

CR, I’ve always thought that should’ve ended a little differently, but knowing WSM it may just be the very speculation he intended.🤔

Wow, her love of the guy she killed has really anesthetized her. Either that or she’s completely self-centered and can’t imagine anything other her own self interest. What a character to play.

As good as Vincent is in this attorney role, I think James Stephenson did an admirable job portraying him in the film. The conscience being tried and torn. Life. Just found out he did a turn as Philo Vance.

Nobody introduces Hollywood actresses with such reverence. I may be mistaken, I am not American but I have never heard of any present day Hollywood actresses talked of like they are true artists. Apologies if I've generalized.

No you're correct, most actors these days do voices for cartoon movies & they can't begin to compare to these old radio stories 💕

good play - dispassionate Brits and always keep a stiff upper lip, even when you might be hanged.
