Tip for reading the Iliad; read it twice! There are multiple versions of it, since it used to be recited orally. In Greek, it would have been performed in a rythmic style, much like a poem. There's a beautiful translation of the poem version in English by Alexander Pope. If you just want the story (but novelized) then go with a Penguin Classic. Again, my suggestion is read both as they are both works of pure art!
Another suggestion for easy reading of the Illiad, read (or listen to) Stephen Fry's rendition of it, named Troy. He has done multiple expansive books on Greek mythology, they're true to the source, but help with providing background info, geographical locations, makes note on other versions and points out their connections with words and names we still use.

Pewds I am 23 years old but started watching you when I was 10. Your book reviews are what sparked my interest in reading for fun again and I could not be more grateful. Discourses and Selected Writings played such a heavy part in changing my perspective and dealing with my anxiety over these past few years, and I would've never even touched Stoicism if it weren't for you discussing it. @@tatianaes3354 You need a decent understanding of prior philosophy to read them and you need to read them in the right order with good secondary sources. Hegel is a million times harder though, a lot of people have completely different interpretations of him.
Bro, I love this so much! he's becoming a role model, not just for his son but us as well. But it's also so wholesome to see how he talks about his son's habit of blowing kisses. How loving. I want to achieve this when I'm older as well. Being a great man that my kids want to be like, having a lifelong relationship with my wife, and just be at peace with life and not fight it.
Those that are humble with what they have find peace in sharing the wealth and knowledgethat got them their. Pewds is certainly one of those people and truly a good soul.
Because they’re rich and don’t have to stress about working say a 9-5. They can allocate so much of their time to something that actually matters. This is also why most prominent names (inventors, philosophers, etc) throughout history are rich.
Sounds like this thread's drinking too much hate, smoke week and take a nice herbal bath to chill the fuck out. It's pretty obvious you've never followed his journey, who you see here is who he was 20yrs ago. Good people exist, something you need to learn. Good luck your going to need it. OR I'm a rtard fooled by bots.
I really like Kant, so here's a tip: If you're more interested in his moral philosophy, you might benefit from reading Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals, instead of Critique of Pure Reason which is more of an epistemological and metaphysical work.
Felix, I was a huge fan since your early days but fell off UA-cam a few years ago ago. I found your channel this year again and it really has been life changing, seeing how great of a family man you are as well as your physical and mental developments has been so inspirational to me and made me a better man. Thank you for these uploads, I really appreciate them! Will follow along with this for sure!
I recently started to feel really depressed and sad, because I was focused on things that were out of my control. I remember I was drinking all day, thinking about human nature and suffering. At this time I also read Dostoyevski and it's known how depressing his book are. So, I was completely down and it could be the end of me, but then I remembered about stoicism. I read Meditations and Epictetus long time ago and had my notes about it. After reading them and remembering that these things I'm thinking about are out of my control, I regained my lifestyle back and my depression was completely gone. After this experience, I will forever remember stoicism and how it literally saved me. It really is like an armor for me from all the suffering. I read Epictetus partially because of your previous book reviews and I want to re-read it again next year, I think it's amazing. I accept the challenge and will read all the books, adding some from my own list. The next year will be educational for sure
I've been slowly reading the Dao De Jing the past couple of months, going one chapter per day and reading multiple translations at the same time - it's been a great experience! Yet more and more I realize that Taoism is a lived, embodied philosophy. And so my goal for next year is inner cultivation, meditation. Thank you, Pewds, for exploring these topics with us. I remember having a renewed interest in Stoicism and reading Plato's Republic because of your videos some years ago. I'll be happily following the video reviews, even if not reading the entire works, so I can focus on my current journey. 🙏😊
I absolutely love the perspective that daoism brings in contrast to (my) western european culture. There are and have been through the centuries some amazing chinese writers that have gone completely unnoticed in the rest of the world because of political tensions. Love to see some being brought to attention in pop media!
i unironically love this channel SO much, more than ever before ,especially being in my early 20s, being able to share with SO much people challenges in life and kinda read together smt that might not become part of me but still feels adventurous
I'm excited to start reading again, I used to read all the time when I was younger. Walking with a book in my face down halls or sneaking readings in class or at home cozied up on a chair. I lost my love for reading for a long time, picked it up against for a little while in my late 20's, and finally I found I needed better prescription glasses and will be getting those soon. So that means I am super excited to start reading again and fall back in love with hobbies I used to love like drawing, writing, poetry, singing, dancing but also pick up other hobbies. We got this! Thank you for doing this Pewdiepie!
You sound like the kind of guy who would benefit from having a Commonplace notebook. It’s a place you can write and organize various philosophies that resonate with you. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Commonplace notebooks ❤
Man, I really needed this! Ive been procrastinating the Tao Te Ching and finally I feel like I’m going to do it! I’m really excited for this dynamic. Merry Christmas for you and your family! ❤
For anyone reading this and doubting what classic to pick, I can heavily recommend don quixote. First modern novel with meta humor, I had a blast reading it this year!
I've recently gotten back into reading (seriously reading a book a day, nonstop, something to take the mind of my current situation) so I am really looking forward to reading these, wanting to do more deep thinking along with my reading.
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favourite books. It's such a massive brick, but as you go along you're hit with these moments that make you appreciate ALL the buildup. I want to try another Dumas but I'm sort of afraid nothing will measure up.
3 musketeers (and its sequels if you're up for challenge). I'm a slow reader so took me 2 years to finish the whole series because the vocabulary is hard for me. Count if Monte Cristo is one of my early classics which I read when I was in grade 8. I was so moved by the story I immediately wrote a summary of it
The Black Tulip compresses the politicking and development of CoMC into 200ish pages. One of my favourite books that I picked up at random, highly recommend
Just a suggestion to PewDiePie to try out some of the Indian historical(some may say mythological) books as well. 1: Bhagwat Geeta (a part of the epic "Mahabharata") 2: Mahabharata 3: Ramayana (smaller than Mahabharata and a good one to start with)
@@biteofdog I love how you are explaining to an Indian guy how to transliterate a Sanskrit word. How considerate. He must needs to know how to speak in the Western vocabulary. The long "i" in Bhagavad-Gītā (भगवद्गीता) is most often transliterated as a double "e" in Hindi to respect the pronunciation. Just so you don't sound this stupid in the future.
Literally just finished Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn era 1, Warbreaker, and Secret History. Just started The Alloy Of Law and boy this video just dropped in the right time
I agree reading is such a underrated hobby, first book i finished is art of war the translation is not that great for my opinion but there are phrases that you will love
this sounds awesome, pewds; i also used to be an avid reader, but as you already know life can get really taxing. however, i’ve been meaning to get back into reading and make the time for it, so i’d love to do this edit: a book i’d personally recommend is the art of living by epictetus. it’s a pretty short book but it’s got some seriously profound and lasting messages in it
TY Pewd for starting book review with the Tao! I've had that collecting dust on my shelf for YEARS intending to read it but now I will do so with you 👍 What a great lineup overall!
you are such a breath for the soul felix, in between all this exhaggerated media and insane world we live in it is so nice to see an actual human being online, not torn in all directions by strings not known to us but calm with a cool purpose in what he is doing. know that you are loved and needed.
a book I read recently was Burnout Society by Byung-Chul Han. It's kind of wordy and contains a lot of obscure references to other philosophers, but it's a short read overall. It talks about the negative impact of the achievement society you touched on when covering Aristotle's book.
Very timely philosopher, I wish pewds would get into much more on this political side of philosophy since that's where it really goes deep, complex and relevant imo. Byung chul han is just one of those thinkers that I know would instantly click with the newer generations along with Mark Fisher.
I used to watch you a ton back in 2014-19 but as I grew up gaming become less of a priority for me.. I transitioned to levelling up in real life, workouts, philosophy and the likes.... I can't explain how amazing it feel to see you evolving as a person alongside me, and the fact that our tastes still match.... I can't express how good it feels to be watching pewdiepie again from this newfound perspective with the same small pp humour. BROFIST!! Much Love to you and your family❤
I don't know if you have played "The Talos Principle" , I think you would really enjoy it, but it ties in nicely with Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason as it explores ideas around sentience.
I started reading Harry Potter last week for the first time, and it’s the first book I’ve read in 15 years. I just finished The Philosopher's Stone, and I’m enjoying it so much!
A true philosopher 😤🙏🏻 But jokes aside, good job! It’s a great series, my favourite book from its gotta be Prisoner of Azkaban or Order of the Phoenix (book 3 and 5).
@@nicholasprystupa199 From the movies, I really like them too. I’m glad that the books are getting thicker in content. I wanted to buy physical copies, but they’re too expensive for me. I can’t wait to finish reading more of these book series!
Felix, you should get in into reading Fyodor Dostoevsky's work, his exploration of human psyche into the human mind, potraying moral dilemmas and the darkness of human nature with unmatched human insight is truly something worth getting into.
Other than philosophy books, other good books to become broader thinker: 1. What if? 2. Stuff matters 3. The Box 4. Wealth of nations, and invisible hand 5. Battle of Bretton Woods
Just bought the first book for next year, it's going to be interesting to see how it goes! Very inspiration video Pewds, tack för inspirationerna du har gett mig under alla åren, tänker fortfarande tillbaka till Stephano tiderna och det får en att skratta än idag. Tack ! :)

THIS IS HUGE. I'm gonna try hard to keep up. Idk if you mentioned this Felix but it would be so cool to do a book review of each book at the end of their respective month. I think this would also keep the bro army accountable. Also, the bro hug (Pacha, Emperor's new groove Meme)
This year got really into reading and got some reason I’ve been going ham on classic Russian literature I read most of fyord Dostoevsky and I have to say if you haven’t read him
I miss your old videos. All those stupid meme review, ylyl, lwiay. But seeing you happy and succeed in your own life and family is making me happier. Thank you, and i hope you keep being around before you retired for good from youtube
There are a lot of theories about his name, but what i believe is that plato was a nickname given to him by his wrestling coach (he was a wrestler) derived from a word "platos" or "platus" which means wide/broad. So its believed he got it for his broad shoulders and chest, but there are also some sources saying he got it for his "broad" forehead soo who really knows 🤷♂️
@ I know there are different stories but I’m just gonna stick with the “Plato is an intellectual bodybuilder” story until I hear compelling evidence to disprove it xD
He has such wisdom here. "It is hard to hold a book and a microphone." How can one read and understand the knowledge of others while prophesying to others. One cannot listen while speaking.
You know, I had this goal that I wanted to start reading again in 2025, I didn't want to go crazy with it and ease myself into it again as I feel I'm not a great reader, so I was going to set myself a goal of 1 book per month, and eventually work my way up to the 100 books everyone should read. Its funny that you should drop this video, now I have a list of books to read next year, and an almost reason to keep it up. Time to go online and find out where I can get these books! Time to start a personal library.
I remember when Felix was just a kid who do random stuff for fun. Now he is a father, have a well build career, a well build body, know how to draw, know his limits and know how to love new things like books and whatever. I respect you man.
I would recommend Crime & Punishment and my personal favorite the Brothers Karamazov, brilliant psychological explorations especially for those of you who feel lost in life. I've read all the books in his list many times in my life, but the book that personally effected me the most was The Bible, which I grew up without. Seriously, I do emplore everyone genuinely interested in literature to read the single most famous and impactful and important text ever written...even if you aren't a Christian...to discount it is to discount an immense wealth of knowledge and culture.
Agreed. I wonder what causes Pewdiepie's apparent aversion to Christian texts. We should read some Augustine, Origen or David Bentley Hart (or of course, the Bible)
Have you read the Quran or other religious texts? Because if you haven't, and don't plan to, this comment would seem to me as quite disingenuous. Also if you ever plan on reading the Quran specifically, than i would emplore you to find a good translation. Since i assume you arent open to learning arabic from scratch to read it lol, which would by FAR be the best way to do so since the original language always holds much more nuance that gets lost in translation (which is what happens with most texts especially if translated from a very different language like japanese, chinese, arabic etc...). I would also recommend listening to a least a bit of tajweed alongside it if possible.
I mean, I haven't read the Bible myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but; the parts of the Bible (especially the OT) that I have heard about are usually Christian doctrins about living life according to the ways of Christ or punishment for those who don't. I won't deny that the Bible holds many hard bars, I've heard those parts mentioned too, but the Bible seems a lot less open to other ideologies than the books mentioned in the video
Highly recommend Boethius' "The Consolation of Philosophy" and Bertrand Russell's "The Problems of Philosophy". Had my undergrad philosophy students read both. "Consolation" is rife with Stoic and Platonic themes as it theorizes on Fate, Providence, justice, death, philosophy of time, and so on. The backstory of the book is especially intriguing-some decades after the fall of the Roman Empire, a Christian philosopher-statesman is sentenced to death for treason (likely on false grounds) by the reigning Ostrogoth emperor he served. While awaiting his execution in exile, Boethius is visited by Lady Philosophy, who brings the scholar a final lesson.

“I don’t know if the Iliad counts as a classic” my brother, the Iliad and the odyssey are THE classics lmao
I love that this is your aspiration.

Because they’re rich and don’t have to stress about working say a 9-5. They can allocate so much of their time to something that actually matters. This is also why most prominent names (inventors, philosophers, etc) throughout history are rich.

I really like Kant, so here's a tip:
If you're more interested in his moral philosophy, you might benefit from reading Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals, instead of Critique of Pure Reason which is more of an epistemological and metaphysical work.
Felix is a living example of why it’s possible to change even as you grow up.❤
I recently started to feel really depressed and sad, because I was focused on things that were out of my control.
Consider reading Carl jung.
Dad arc hits different fr
Being a good father is far right.
Book reviews have always been the absolute banger. We should be glad that he's still making these for us. 👊
There entire canon of the Dao

I absolutely love the perspective that daoism brings in contrast to (my) western european culture. There are and have been through the centuries some amazing chinese writers that have gone completely unnoticed in the rest of the world because of political tensions. Love to see some being brought to attention in pop media!

Your book review stuff is literally my favourite segment of yours, please do more
I'm excited to start reading again, I used to read all the time when I was younger.
Just bought Tao Te Ching. Excited to go on this journey with you.
I’ve always liked reading and philosophy, but have never taken the plunge.
9:26 This theme of stoicism is very present in the book "East of Eden". One of the most beautiful books of all time.
0:31 you lose the bet pewds. I watch all your videos. Been loving the vlogs lately
0:28 Came for the open fly, stayed for the book review.

Fine, the hug at the end convinced me. I'll read a book again
I think its funny at 4:21 pewds said "Legal Minecraft Anime" but editor thought he said League of Minecraft
Just a suggestion to PewDiePie to try out some of the Indian historical(some may say mythological) books as well.
1: Bhagwat Geeta (a part of the epic "Mahabharata")
2: Mahabharata
3: Ramayana (smaller than Mahabharata and a good one to start with)
Mahabharata and Ramayana were taught to us in high school (late 90s) here in the Philippines.
In western countries it's called Bhagavad Gita.

You should read Anna Karenina. You would like the character of Levin, and the way Tolstoy describes life in general
this sounds awesome, pewds; i also used to be an avid reader, but as you already know life can get really taxing. however, i’ve been meaning to get back into reading and make the time for it, so i’d love to do this
edit: a book i’d personally recommend is the art of living by epictetus. it’s a pretty short book but it’s got some seriously profound and lasting messages in it
TY Pewd for starting book review with the Tao! I've had that collecting dust on my shelf for YEARS intending to read it but now I will do so with you 👍 What a great lineup overall!
you are such a breath for the soul felix, in between all this exhaggerated media and insane world we live in it is so nice to see an actual human being online, not torn in all directions by strings not known to us but calm with a cool purpose in what he is doing. know that you are loved and needed.
i LOVE that you're talking so much about philosophy. it's such an important way of learning that way too many people don't touch or think about.
a book I read recently was Burnout Society by Byung-Chul Han.
Thanks for sharing

I used to watch you a ton back in 2014-19 but as I grew up gaming become less of a priority for me.. I transitioned to levelling up in real life, workouts, philosophy and the likes....

2. Stuff matters
3. The Box
4. Wealth of nations, and invisible hand
5. Battle of Bretton Woods

20:36 Plato looks interesting, historical records seem to point towards the idea that Plato was an absolute unit.
In the words of mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead "all of western philosophy is a footnote to Plato"
@@maartenbondt9600 Many of the Ancient Greek philosophers were accomplished athletes and famous soldiers. So it's more likely than not.
As a 11-year Pewds fan and 23-year (old) reading fan, this is... epic! The two worlds collide.
2:39 Yes Pewds, I'd like to point out that there is a clip on that unit, so I am a bit confused why you keep holding it lol.
He has such wisdom here. "It is hard to hold a book and a microphone." How can one read and understand the knowledge of others while prophesying to others. One cannot listen while speaking.
14:54 "(I can never say it right) Donkeyshot" we know Felix... we know.
Wasn't even close with that one. Haha
I wish one day to sit down and just have a conversation with Felix. He rarely shows us this side of him yet it’s so inspiring and… peaceful?
I already have my own plans for books to read but I've been reading almost every day and it's nice to see some thoughtful recommendations.
21:39 Not me hugging the monitor
You know, I had this goal that I wanted to start reading again in 2025, I didn't want to go crazy with it and ease myself into it again as I feel I'm not a great reader, so I was going to set myself a goal of 1 book per month, and eventually work my way up to the 100 books everyone should read. Its funny that you should drop this video, now I have a list of books to read next year, and an almost reason to keep it up. Time to go online and find out where I can get these books! Time to start a personal library.

This is the earliest I've been to a Pewdiepie video... and Book Review too! SO EXCITED
Bruh, weak bait. Thankfully, Pewds is much smarter than this.
@@cynxmanga ... how is that bait?
I mean, I haven't read the Bible myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but; the parts of the Bible (especially the OT) that I have heard about are usually Christian doctrins about living life according to the ways of Christ or punishment for those who don't. I won't deny that the Bible holds many hard bars, I've heard those parts mentioned too, but the Bible seems a lot less open to other ideologies than the books mentioned in the video
God bless you Felix, we have matured with you!
