- 9-BALL - RAFAEL MARTINEZ took on EARL ‘THE PEARL’ STRICKLAND late in 2009 US Open 9-Ball Championship in Chesapeake, Va. Martinez might not have been the household name that Strickland was back then, but both of these players knew the battle they were going to be in to win this one.
Danny Diliberto and Jay Helfert provided the commentary

Bring back the ring girls!🤣
"Rack girls"
Not in today's world
Why?
I second that.😎
Yes 👏🏼
Thanks Pat.. Rafael Martinez one of the most underrated players ever.. Such a beautiful powered stroke 💪
Great match , I knew Rafael from earlier matches on accu stats. Love watching the players of the past as I find them very entertaining, truly the greatest players of their time & maybe then some!
Thanks for this!
Glad you enjoyed!
Earl and Rafael are such amazing power players! And Rafael is also a class act and a great sportsman!
What a great match! Rafael is such a great player! By far one of the toughest opponents i seen Earl face!
Rafael ... you've played a great match ... down to the wire 👊🇲🇽👍🎱
That was an exciting match. Thanks for making it available. This is the second match I've seen with Martinez; such a good player.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like Rafael’s stroke😮
Very old school.
2024 and I still watch this game. 👀
18:29 Danny says "I don't think your suppised to whack the cueball" after Earl has a tantrum.
Rafael Martínez 🇲🇽
I really like the cocabola 9 foot diamond table! Oh la la
Yup
rosewood
6time world champ 5-time open champ the best 9 ball player ever
Ride on !! Earl's playing style, up-tempo and shot making are 2nd to none.
2 things are super cool. First, Strickland himself called Reyes the best ever...wow, strong stuff.
Secondly, Earl still uses good old Blue Masters chalk !!!
This is the first time I've seen Rafael play. Man he's not afraid to let that cue ball travel, and he has a really good stroke.
Every time I watch this, I’m gonna Stop it about three quarters of the way through and Pretend like Rafael Won the Match.
He has an Amazing aggressive style of Play, it is Quite something to see.
14:22 Rafael's reverse 4(5) rail shot. This comes up every now and then and players are careful and take their time but he shot it like it was routine. lol
Outstanding match!
I love Rafael Martinez's demeanor at the table and he is a great player
Hope Earl is picked for Mosconi this year
Earl's abs are oustanding after
500 crunches and a 5 mile run daily!!!
Yo soy dominicano y me gusta como juegan nuestros hermanos mexicanos 🔥🔥🙌🍾
Always great and best player in the world, I love this guy 😁
Incredible match& shooting
I wasn't aware of Rafael for a long time.. he's quite a player
Great replay 🏆
Martinez played some tournaments in Germany once in de 90ies... he beat Bustamante in de Finals 13-2. It was a beating Bustamante surely will never forget.
Earl messing with Rafael on those reracks...lol.
1:06:59 This is what annoys me about commentators, that 2 went in the side all day, and they spent 3 minutes talking about it like it's an issue.
Martinez is a class act. I can tell he is a money player with his stroke & fearless shot preference. I love his style. I have never liked Strickland & his demeanor of an 4 year old that mom didn’t buy him a toy at the grocery store. Blamed people in the crowd stubbing a 7 ball in the corner. Martinez gave away the match more than Strickland earned it. I came away very impressed with Martinez. Now i know why Efren dominates Strickland in 9 or 10 ball.
Thanks Pat, The mighty Earl, How bout Leonardo Andam? Can ya give us 1 of him? The fans deserve to see more than just Efren, Bustamante, and Luat, thanks so much, The Pearl!!!!
I will work on getting some Andam matches up.
Rafael Martinez "El Colima" he still plays a lot over here in Mexico. A true legend on the table. Not the greatest attitude tho...
Has it gotten worse?
@@pechinma sometimes.
how come?
This match couldn't have been any more entertaining. Feel bad for Martinez, because his errors cost him the game.
Das ist Billard!🎖🏆🏅
Why is the 2009 contest being presented now? Copyright or something like that?
We pull an old match from the archives to premiere every Tuesday night.
sad it payed 50000 in 2000 nine years later 20000 crying shame no more in 2023
Excellent match
Yes it was
Pretty dang good
The MIGHTY EARL!! 🔥💪💪
Oh, yea. Dig those ripped abs
after 500 crunches daily.
Martinez looks perpetually annoyed that he's not eating something.
He started dieting during this match.
Martínez era demasiado bueno
Rafeal Martinez could make a 6 rail combo/bank time shot then follow it up by rattling a simple shot. His expression would never change.
Rafael Martinez is a very good player.
Tremendo partido
Dannyand Billy will argue anything. Say the sky is blue and they'll say "Really? It looks kinda green to me, and sometimes gray, even black at night."
Earl is my favorite player for his faster pace and shot-making.
Martinez, though, had 'em. Maybe a little too flashy instead of meat-and-potatoes did him in.
I didn't need the announcers to say they've played before with a little bad blood,
I could see from the start with the pre-lag handshake. It's 1 on 1, these things happen. Go Earl !!
@57:16 Earl "The Hysterical" Strickland
cudos to patrick fleming
why don't we have more girls walking like this after the rack?
True that! What a beautiful hot lady! Does anyone know her IG?
I think we lack funding for Ring girls. The sport is a budget sport... They were being optimistic back then.
Strickland should not be able to put on and take off those weights. Those give him more force behind his breaks the other player doesn't have
@9:50 tough position for the 3 down table,… Martinez just switches to left hand and draws into perfect position.
Nice table no lines
EARL THE PEARL and STEPHEN LEE was in attendance
No, that was Keyser Soze
@@scottisitoro3953 DOMINIC DALE was also there
I got annoyed by them trying to sell Danny's clinic.
J helford makes every shot sound like it's so unmissible and so easy like he could do it
Why does earl have all that crap on his hands?
How about that?¿? Earl Strickland how about that??? G.O.A.T. Thats How...
They kept calling Rafael's shot "the dipsy doodle."
I think the faster you break the less accuracy you have.
Need to find what works for you.
Me? Center ball hit so cue stays in
the middle of the table is my whole goal,
after, of course, pocketing at least 1 ball.
The odds were against Earl. 😳
Raphael is a much better player! 🎱
Hello Raffa here is Addy from Kassel germany, you remember me? You had make a clean up dushing, in my house... how do you do? I hope y are fine...
Interesting that Martinez breaks with a closed
bridge while shooting every other shot open.
He was cut with a knife in that hand. He can only play open bridge.
@@howdy2496 Oh.okay. Didn't have that info.
Still an awesome shot-maker
Rafael has a loose stroke. Fun to watch, but leads to alot of scratches.
Novice question: why do they lift the questick in the air (towards the refs I’d guess) after every game?
It's a religious thing, salute to pool gods. Part of billiards tradition. You should try it, it brings luck
Are you thinking of when they move their bead on the wire after winning a rack?
@@AccuStats first, I must thank you for the reply. But no, several times in the video, the one finishing the game moves to the front of the table, turns towards the public and raises the questick in the air. Sorry, I’m very new to this, but in the same time very excited about pool. Thanks in advance. An example to this ... 46:00.
They are moving beads on a string hanging out of camera view to mark their score.
@@LumiusStrife thank you so much for the reply bud. It’s bit weird though, that they went that way, instead of having something in arms reach.
That miss on the 5 ball lost it for him
These announcers...all the talk and laughter about Earl
putting on/off weights. So what?
Highly doubtful Strickland would try that in a big-time
tournament without experimenting first in practice.
Good for the mind = good for the game.
Earl 's wait on right arm not leaguel.
Who is that breathing heavy in the background? I thought someone else was with me
That was Keyser Soze lurking
in the background...or Michael Myers.
Earl has to be the weirdest player ever... He's wearing weights on his ankle and pulls them off his ankles and puts them on his arms.
Rafael had a choking problem n why the big titles never came..like Grady a narcissist
Earl is still a great player but I cant stand his mouth so ill root for anyone playing against him
Everytime Rafael chalks, he uses one hand, then switches to the other. I've never seen a player do that before. I find it annoying and I don't know why.
When you do that, you engage both left and right brain.. you also get the weight of the cue out of the hand which can be a plus after many hours.
@@joshpalmer6502 Why don't more players do it?
@@kiosunightstep6640 good question. Along with washing your hands very clean before each match to feel every idiosyncrasy with your grip. Knew Martinez very well and he was a master at everything. Only unfortunate thing is that I saw him miscue more than anyone due to him playing with a very thin tip.
1:13:44 The commentators should be fired. Rafael drilled the kick in. So much talk about nothing.
Earl😩😂😂
Rafael miss cues because his tip is always worn down..seen it!
Der zweite reporter hört sich an als ob er schnupfen hat.
Rafael was definitely affected by Earl's bitchy behavior. Have seen someone did the same thing in a $1000 game and almost got beaten by the other player.
You need to put a muzzle on danny....he talks to much and don't know what he is talking about.....good lord!
Absolutely no sound???
Sorry operating error
👁️👁️
Heck with Helfert! He says "Earl's logic" escapes him.. So does 99.9% of Earl's TALENT escape him! 💯💪
Earl "Edward Scissorhands" Pearl.
😂😂😂👏👏👏
Mature ring women. Tanned and oiled. So wise.. Everything is ruined now.. Wrong color balls, cloth.. Not even nice referee with nice eyes and nose. Cloth is way too slippery now.. Like tanned, older woman. I like oil. Thank you, for this great match. Pearl is the man. That other guy is also great, not that clinical 2020 style.
what the heck you talking about? This aint no bikini contest! Lay off the tequila Jose.
totally agree. players today are boring.
Yeah wtf are you talking about? Old tanned women? Oil? This is a pool match dude.
Rafael has a very bad stroke, he miscues more than anyone else I know....I know he could do a lot with the cueball if it doesn't miscue but you cannot rely on that.
Yeah. I heard he likes the tip warn down to a nub. That makes the chance of miscues go up for sure.
@@8329kelso Saw his tip about 30 years ago. The leather fades to zero at the edge of the ferrule. I could not imagine playing with it
