Thomas went east, like he said. He left behind his cushy New York apartment in search of the breadcrumbs left by the published stories of Cubit Reports, drawn by an otherworldly call, insanity cocooning in his mind, soon ready to hatch.
Past warnings of ghouls, vampires, and dead that walked the night, past fools, speakers of fairytales, he found a parlour with old circus posters, home of the man that claimed he could syphon dreams.
An agreement was made. The first session began. Then came the second, the third, the fourth, always near an open window, each a series of nightmare shows that showed obtuse lands, planets orbiting shapes that enveloped life, and creatures beyond the sun peering down on a pale blue dot.
His insomnia lessened, but there was now something worse happening, a feeding session on his mind and thoughts, a draining of life through the paranormal. Thomas soon realized that it was not just the nightmares that the man took from him. He fought back, and with a final effort broke free just long enough for to spark the old carpets and curtains aflame, spill the drinks of foul odours for fuel.
The parlour burned, the man disappeared, but not before a promise: that he would find him, and finish what was started. For it was him that first induced the nightmares and driven him to come all the way to such domain.
Helpless, and knowing there were much bigger powers at play than he could have imagined, Thomas returned to the locals asking for help.
"Go to Egypt!” they said. “Go where the cats of Cairo still dwell and follow them! Find the one that escaped. Find that American woman!"
