Hyundai W240D LCD Monitor Screen Flicker (Part 1 of 3)

- Had the Hyundai W240D 24" PVA monitor for almost 2 years now, what a fantastic monitor but I think it is dying (see video). The screen flickers but the flickering appears mostly in "My Games" folder and hardly at all in a full screen game. Very odd...
Things I've tried:
- Using a different DVI-D cable
- Using a different monitor power cable
- Updating graphics card drivers
- Changing refresh rate from 59Hz to 60Hz
I will be trying the monitor on another PC next week to see if it does it on there, if it does, I can safely say the monitor is at fault but I should be ok because of Hyundai's 3 year warranty.
I have recorded another video a week later showing the problem occuring in a more extreme case • Hyundai W240D LCD Moni...

PVA is a type of panel technology used in LCD monitors. It's offers better image quality, viewing angles and colour to the cheaper TN types.
You might also need to fix cold solder joints if there are traces of overheating on elements marked with a green dash. In that case just unsolder them and solder them again. Use low ESR capacitors, for example Panasonic FR series. New capacitors should have the same capacity (μF) as the old ones AND equal or greater voltage (V). Should you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Update. Spoke too soon. Monitor was not fixed. So I took it apart again. I unsoldered all the capacitors in the switch mode PSU and measured their ESR. The domed capacitor was really bad, but another capacitor was borderline. So I ordered new 105degC low ESR capacitors from an Ebay seller, and this time replaced *all* capacitors. This time it really does look fixed. Total cost £3. It might be worth you giving it a try. I really love the picture on this monitor. I prefer it to my 24" Dell.
I've just fixed this exact problem with my W240D monitor. I found a "doming" electrolytic capacitor in the switch mode PSU. This is a common sign of a failing capacitor which is "drying out" due to too much heat. I replaced it with an exact replacement (same value, voltage). Put everything back together and the fault appears to be fixed. I did try to post a more detailed explaination, but ran out of characters!
I have tested this monitor at another home on another PC and the problem still occurs, although it took 2 hours of using the monitor before it would finally start to flicker.
This rules out everything else so the problem MUST be monitor. I will contact Hyundai about this as I have a 3 year warranty with them.
This was caused by a dying panel which was replaced and solved the problem. i don't use this monitor anymore though, gave it away to a family member (still works fine today) i now use the AOC Q2770PQU 27" Monitor for gaming and photo editing. Amazing, affordable monitor.
+gohan2091 I had the same problem, but it is just a problem with the gm5868H chip of the tft, which is getting too hot and then produces flickering. I mounted somehow a small heatsink and now everything is ok.
+Bruce Johnson that's goofy if you know how to do that sort of thing. Mine was repaired under warranty.
I have the same problem, will try that.
I had a similar problem with my W240D. Instead of your flickering, my monitor would sometimes flicker white lines once in awhile and it is repeatable by doing a certain thing (mouse over certain areas).
Then sometimes the monitor would fade white, then black. If i alt tab into another window, even minimized windows, the flicker and abnormalities stop.
I've switched everything in the computer short of motherboard and another i7 processor. I then used a different monitor and its gone.
How do you know you're getting a new one? They insisted mine would be repaired. Check out part 3 of 3 video I uploaded recently to see how well my "repaired" monitor works.
@ gohan2091, I had the same thing happening on mine, and it took me sending it in 4 times to get them to replace it. Finally I have it here, but for the price I spent on shipping, I could have purchased a new monitor almost twice! It's just hard when you spend over 500 bucks on a "quality" monitor that it breaks and fails, and when sent in doesn't get fixed the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th times!!! Good luck. Insist that they pay for the return shipping after the 2nd time!!! They did it for me!!!
@210482fmj All you can do is try, I wish you the best!
loved this monitor so far, but 3years 1month after I bought it the same happened here :(
tried everything I could think of except tearing it apart...
and it seems I'm out of luck regarding the 3 year warranty....guess I have to start searching for a new monitor that has at least a picture quality as good and beautiful as this one :(
Hello,
could you post a link to the right ESR capacitor and if possible a short "How To - Replace them ", please ?
Becouse i got a new PSU but i have the same issue like you had.
Thank you very much
Trzeba wymienić 2 elektrolity przed i za regulatorem 3v3 dla procesora oraz założyć radiator na cpu i stabilizatorach. Proponuje wartość kondensatorów zwiększyć na 820uF/16V. That's all folks . Jeśli komuś się nie chce samemu robić, zapraszam do mojego serwisu. Kto nie rozumie proszę zastosować google translator :)

how do you get the casing open on this monitor to perform a repair. I couldn't figure out how to get the casing to release. are there internal release catches you need a special tool for?
Customer Service was good when I was speaking to them on the phone and via email. I've received my replacement monitor, check out my new video (part 3 of 3) to find out how I got on.........
my W240D is doing the exact same thing, I bought it 2 years and 3 months ago. I suspect it could be an overheating problem. Also the touch buttons no longer work reliably. how was the service from hyundai when you contacted them?
@wslines
Wow, 4 times before it finally got fixed? What were they doing with it? Keeping it in storage, then sending it back to you?! If that happens to me, I will have a right go at them (in a polite way)
Did you know what was wrong with it at the end? Was overheating the issue?
I'm in the UK and Hyundai collects and re-delivers free of charge so I am losing no money. What I am losing though is patience and time as my computer is very important to me and I can't use it without a monitor.
My W240D died after 2 years and 3 just like radishhoedown! Shame it was a great monitor while it lasted.
4,5 years here, same effect :(
overheat
What is PVA?
Yep, ive just got one and it started doing it like straight out the box D:
wats mac any way
Thanks to a friendly guy on the Polish PClab forum I know how to fix this issue. 1. Take your monitor apart, look at this picture: s8.postimage.orgYYYYoui9cxrglYYYYimage.jpg (change YYYY to a slash /). 2. Replace the capacitors marked with red circles. If this won't help, change also the capacitors marked with red dots. This will fix the problem.
