Oceanus is easily the best design out of the dragons, she looks and feels like a character you’d see in a Dragon Quest game even down to the scenario she causes. It honestly makes her true form even more boring because of the major contrast between the two.
I have the head-canon that (Given GT is non-canon) Oceanus Shenron's disguised form is the depiction of a Shenron from the Earth of Universe 6 after it's restored with the Super Dragon Balls.
Man, GT really has that thing where a villain can't be good-looking. They destroyed Baby Vegeta by making him look less like Vegeta, Super 17 had those exaggerated expression that made him look demented and the ONE Dragon that doesn't look like a gargoyle and has a cool design is just a disguise.
Oceanus has two forms, and has a dual natured personality, is because of the nature of Oolong's wish. It was technically a selfish wish that was used for the selfless reason of thwarting Pilaf's plan.
At first I was like, man he sounds a lot like Rasslor from Dexter's Laboratory and I thought originally it was just a guy doing an impression of Randy Savage, I never knew Randy Savage ACTUALLY voiced that guy!!!!!!! I'm so bad!!!!!!!!! TuT
18:45 The fact you gotta think “Was this her first kamehameha?” Is definetely pointing out an issue that she was very underutilized throughout the show. In the dub they flat out say it is her first kamehameha. Despite her using it before. And even in the sub she acts like Goku would be suprised she could use it
Another interpretation that I really like for Oceanus' vaguely benevolent nature is the same as a dragon down the line. That is to say a benevolent wish creates an evil dragon and a selfish wish makes one with more good in them. Oolong's wish, while selfish, was made in a hurry to stop Pilaf. Hence why this dragon is so middle of the road compared to Piccolo's wish. Not all good, certainly, but not all bad either.
I... Aren't most of the dragons made from wishes like "Hey can you bring back everyone the bad guys killed?" EDIT: Wait nvm. You're saying it's a contrast situation

Oceanus got stuck in my head for a good while after i first watched the dub of GT as a kid, in a similar place as nuova, sin, and the mole dragon, i admit most of it was probably laura bailey's outburst of "IT WAS THE UNDERWEAR" catching me so off guard that it made me curious where the hell some of this stuff was coming from... It still took me something like ten years afterward and the full hearted recommendation of kaiserneko of it being the best the franchise has to offer to actually watch OG Dragonball
Most of the dragons have an opposite alignment to the intent of the wish, as we later see with a certain dragon. So Oceanus being a bit closer to Neutral since her wish was closer to it since... It was for underwear rather than something outright good. So giving the fisherman fish for praise, good for greedy reasons compared to getting something pervy for good reasons? Oddly works 2:40 funny enough Shadow Dragon also works bettter BECAUSE of what I put. Shadows is the space left out of the direct light because YOU are in that space, so to keep with the idea of balance...
Plus they';re like the 'shadows' hidden behind the wishes, the shadow of the darkness of humanity's desires or something plsu its just a way better bad guy name than just straight up evil dragons. that's jsut lazy.
Re: Goku being rough on children: I'd like to remind mister Emperor Cat that Gohan had to beg his father to go harder during their training in the time chamber because Goku was taking it too easy on him.
Oceanus's human form is honestly the best design out of all the Dragons. Its simple, but the cross between a Sea Witch and some sort of primordial goddess is fitting for one named after the greek mythological Titan of Water (fresh water specifically too) Also, Oceanus being vaguely benevolent makes sense considering the wish that made them was pretty harmless one way or the other. It was a silly, somewhat creepy wish, but it was only made to prevent Pilaf from getting his. This tracks since Nouva later on, who was made with the most "evil" wish of the bunch, yet he's arguibly the nicest of the Shadow Dragons
The 6 Star Shadow Dragon episode always sticks with me for being a standout in this arc. Background characters with an ongoing story that feels like it gives the Dragon reason to be there, direct ties to the wish influencing the way the Dragon presents themself, genuine strategy in the fight and how the Dragon is beaten, and the twinkle in Goku's eye as Pan charges her Kamehameha - while he's still getting beaten with a gale force pointed windstorm - really capped it off excellently. It saddens me to remember that the bar has been set very early, and I have a strong feeling it won't click as well as it just did for the rest of the show. Vale to you Oceanus, you gave us a solid highlight before it becomes the Nova + Ice + Omega show.
I would say happenstance saving is not too bad because they had *more dragons to find.* Pan: "Oh man, we only survived by dumbluck there." Goku: "Hmm, yes. We better keep our guard up from now on."
Oceanus' in her Princess Oto form looks like she'd fit in right with Dragon Quest. It makes me wish that more of the Dragons had disguised forms instead of just her.
My head canon for why in GT the Shadows Dragons came out now instead of earlier like in Z, is because they have been abusing Dragon Balls ever since the Majin Buu saga up until Super 17. Granted it has only been recently in Super that they shown the cast actually be selfish with the Dragon Balls, like wishing to be younger, or curing a Baby's flu.
9:30 in point of better happenstance usage. When Luffy learns that Crocodile is weak to water in Alabasta he has to then find a creative solution to use that against Crocodile as Croc went out of his way to limit what water was around him.
They really should have had all the characters on board for this whole arc. We could have had a celebration of all the dragonball characters. When was the last arc krillin or tien were relevant?
@@gothpunkboy89 tien was also ever so slightly relevant against nappa. but still, youre right that all he ever did in Z was stand around and stall for time
@@gothpunkboy89 like i said he did the exact same thing he did for cell, help stall for some time while waiting for a saiyan to be ready to fight instead. By your logic literally noone was relevant against nappa, their only chance was because he was a saiyan he had fun toying with them rather than wanting to finish them off quickly. What did krillin get off on nappa, a couple love taps and a cheek scratch while otherwise just running around? At least tien fucked up nappas armor with the kikoho.
I have a theory about the Dragons' design choices as well as how the battles are playing out. It feels like the writers were trying to close the circle. Harkening back to the original Dragon Ball, where it wasn't about who had the biggest number but who was the more skilled fighter; you couldn't just hit hard, you had to out wit your opponent too (plus a little luck never hurts). They kinda show that with the goo dragon, raw power didn't do a thing against it but a handy rainstorm finished the job. Plus as Lani and Kaiser pointed out, the designs really harken back to the og Dragon Ball designs, so there is that too. As for why Goku and Pan (and Giru too) were the only two doing anything in this arc until Syn shows up, my thought is that it was showing Pan was the only one who cared about having the torch passed down. Gohan, Goten, and Trunks didn't care to be Earth's defender, yet Pan did. She wanted to go on the adventures, loved fighting with Goku, etc.; and my thought was that it was the writer's way of showing us that after Goku was gone for good, Pan was the one who would step up as Earth's Champion. Maybe I'm reading way more than the writers intended, but it's interesting to think about...
even then, uub def shouldve been there at least💀 he's the one who was set up to be earths next defender even before GT was made. I also find it hard to believe that vegeta wouldnt just go and take out a shadow dragon or 2 himself just for the sake of fighting something, and it wouldve made perfect sense for one of the dragons that are attacking a town to be felled by gohan and videl in their superhero outfits (though im of the apparently minority group who doesnt actually like saiyaman anyway, it still wouldve been better than everyone else doing nothing). Goten and Trunks also would probably want to fuse into gotenks and fight one just for fun, but youre right that neither of them care about taking on the mantle
Lani must be watching too much hanime, the second the tentacles came out of the goo chicken he immediately tells pan to run. He knows the foreshadowing doom that could be impending 😂
Rage was interesting, especially since his "birth-wish" was reviving Goku after the whole Raditz debacle and kinda legitimizes his claim as Goku's kinda-brother, but the way they handled his resolution _SUCKED ASS_ with it being such a passive victory. As for Oceanus, by far my favorite of the Lesser-Four, and arguably my second favorite of all seven of them just behind Nuova. Honestly, I think Oceanus should've gotten at least a two-parter instead of a single-episode resolution. One detail I did enjoy was that when Oceanus was explaining the wish that brought her to life being Oolong's panty wish, she didn't even finish explaining (let alone even say the word 'panties') before Pan figured it out... and shared the righteous rage of a girl's embarrassment.
So I know we're all here to both shit on and celebrate GT and all that fun stuff. But being immediately smacked in the face with Lani doing a Macho Man gimmick might be one of the best things I have ever seen.
I wanna know the logic of some of the designs. Like how does Roshi wishing Goku back to life to fight Vegeta and Nappa= giant slimy electric chicken-dragon???
They're mostly just supposed to evoke Japanese yokai whilst also having elemental themed powers. The five-star dragon is the only one whose origin wish affects their appearance.
An interesting angle they could have taken with the Shadow Dragons is that they could have made them like the Djinn. In the sense that they still grant wishes using their elemental powers, but due to their corrupted nature they are intentionally or unintentionally corrupting & twisting said wishes. Unlike Shenron who grants a single *perfect* wish. Like with Oceanus here. Maybe she could have responded to the fishing village's collective wish for their lives to be easier. So she does all the hard work of catching fish FOR THEM. Causing the entire town's behaviour to spiral out of control as now they don't actually have anything better to do all day but sell fish and get drunk. Not to mention the damage she is causing to the ecosystem. Sure, they're technically prospering. But everyone's a selfish arsehole now cause they LITERALLY have no reason to strive to be better and the enviroment around them is dying because the fish are being hunted to excess & the avian wildlife is being driven out. Then once Oceanus is defeated, they realise the dangers of trying to get a quick fix to complicated problems. Its nothing fancy but it works and it also further plays on the idea of the world not actually NEEDING the Dragon Balls. PS: As for the other shadow dragons- *Haze* could have responded to people's gripe about humanity polluting the world and went "I'll do it *myself* then. " *Rage* could have responded to the older couple, who we see in the episode, and for their wish for peace and quiet. Taking it literally by killing everyone else and draining the town of all electricity. *Naturon* could have responded to a selfish and cowardly man's desire to watch the world burn. Mirroring his personality by being weak and pathetic on his own, but once he starts using someone else as a tool, his true sinister nature comes out. *Nouva* and *Eis* could be responding to the duality of Goku's deepest desire. Nouva is the honorable rival he can pit his strength against and grow alongside, while Eis is the despicable villain he doesn't have to hold back against whatsoever. *Syn* could be responding to the cast's desire to assemble the Dragonballs, by absorbing them into himself. Poetic since he is the 1 Star Dragon and that desire literally being the thing that *started* the franchise.

So Oceanus being a bit closer to Neutral since her wish was closer to it since... It was for underwear rather than something outright good. So giving the fisherman fish for praise, good for greedy reasons compared to getting something pervy for good reasons? Oddly works
2:40 funny enough Shadow Dragon also works bettter BECAUSE of what I put. Shadows is the space left out of the direct light because YOU are in that space, so to keep with the idea of balance...
Plus they';re like the 'shadows' hidden behind the wishes, the shadow of the darkness of humanity's desires or something
plsu its just a way better bad guy name than just straight up evil dragons. that's jsut lazy.
Re: Goku being rough on children:
I'd like to remind mister Emperor Cat that Gohan had to beg his father to go harder during their training in the time chamber because Goku was taking it too easy on him.
Mister Emperor Cat🤣 that's a good joke on KaiserNeko
Oceanus's human form is honestly the best design out of all the Dragons. Its simple, but the cross between a Sea Witch and some sort of primordial goddess is fitting for one named after the greek mythological Titan of Water (fresh water specifically too)
Also, Oceanus being vaguely benevolent makes sense considering the wish that made them was pretty harmless one way or the other. It was a silly, somewhat creepy wish, but it was only made to prevent Pilaf from getting his.
This tracks since Nouva later on, who was made with the most "evil" wish of the bunch, yet he's arguibly the nicest of the Shadow Dragons
40 years later and people are still parodying Randy Savage. He's just unforgettable.
You guys are literally the only people I subscribe to that I don't skip the sponsor reads. You're the only ones who actually make it entertaining
"Snap into a Slim Jim!"
I think if Macho Lan was part of official DBZA canon, he would be the one that inspired Mr. Satan to become a martial artist in the first place.
The "princess" dragon's design reminds me a LOT of a Sailor Moon-style villain. And I love that
The dragons actually having Namekian influence is kinda cool to me given the dragon ball origins. I wish that was explored more.
I loved the design of princess dragon wish they used that more in games
Dang, Lani's Macho Man voice is really good. He should be a voice actor :p
Thanks for adding some dragon ball commentary at the end of this great factor video!
I'd like to point out in Dragon Ball Heroes the panty dragon's princess form was her super form with the addition of dragon wings on her head
I would say happenstance saving is not too bad because they had *more dragons to find.*
Pan: "Oh man, we only survived by dumbluck there."
Goku: "Hmm, yes. We better keep our guard up from now on."
Only TFS can come up with ads that I can watch all the way through
Oceanus' in her Princess Oto form looks like she'd fit in right with Dragon Quest. It makes me wish that more of the Dragons had disguised forms instead of just her.
Between the (not) Macho Man ad and the random Juice Robinson reference, I love how wrestling fan coded the top of this episode is lol
5:26 - he’s mega-ultra [goo] chicken!!!!!!
10:41 - haha!!!
No….he is legend…
My head canon for why in GT the Shadows Dragons came out now instead of earlier like in Z, is because they have been abusing Dragon Balls ever since the Majin Buu saga up until Super 17. Granted it has only been recently in Super that they shown the cast actually be selfish with the Dragon Balls, like wishing to be younger, or curing a Baby's flu.
9:30 in point of better happenstance usage. When Luffy learns that Crocodile is weak to water in Alabasta he has to then find a creative solution to use that against Crocodile as Croc went out of his way to limit what water was around him.
The only channel where i dont skip the sponsor videos. Great job guys
“You can’t blast through my goo!
I will blast it back at you!”
Did anyone else think Lani was going to do a whole Seussian verse like that?
3:31
Surprise Juice Robinson, yeah!
Love the Juice Robinson reference!!
The bone saw reference with the microwave 🤌
I like how he embraces the fact he looks like Macho Man lol😂
i never realised how much i enjoyed other people's suffering until these started coming out, i've discovered a new part of myself
as always, the energy Lani brings to the ads is amazing
I'd have accepted the happenstance victory if the dragon was fighting Goten and Trunks because we could laugh at them winning that way.
I'm imagining them trying to do the fusion dance, but chicken mans goo keeps pulling them away
Doesn't look like we're at that dragon yet
The band aid stays on
2:28 oh fuck we are
Will the band be ok without aid?!
Sorry, just a lame dad joke :p
I came here for GTFS, and found myself amazed by the MachoLan, quality as always!
Omg I never knew I needed the Macho Lan in my life until now 😂
Dont mess with Macho Lan. He's a randy savage.
This is my favorite ad 😂😂😂 great job Lani!
Missed a chance to call his big form kai-goo.
8:20 - That was actually my initial reaction: "This makes *two* Shadow Dragons now that have been defeated by...fresh...water...
They really should have had all the characters on board for this whole arc. We could have had a celebration of all the dragonball characters. When was the last arc krillin or tien were relevant?
to be fair, Krillin is super dead right now, would make it hard for him to contribute
Tien was only relevant in like 1 scene out of all of Z with Cell. Krillin had a couple of moments against Nappa and the early part of the Namek.
@@gothpunkboy89 tien was also ever so slightly relevant against nappa. but still, youre right that all he ever did in Z was stand around and stall for time
@@JubioHDX I would not call being a punching bag for nappa as being relevant.
It’s a really good thing Nick didn’t choose to do hulk hogan for the ad 😂
I've never wanted more of an ad so much in my life 😅 also now I kinda wish Lani played Recoome like that 🤣
I have a theory about the Dragons' design choices as well as how the battles are playing out.
Even if they intended that at some point, they never actually did anything with it.
Another missed opportunity by GT
even then, uub def shouldve been there at least💀 he's the one who was set up to be earths next defender even before GT was made.
OOOH YYEEAAAHHH!! i dig me some Macho Lan, some CREAM OF THE CROP ad-reading, yeah, and its about to reach THE BOILING POINT!!
Came for the commentary but really enjoyed the sponsor, OOOOHHHHH YEAH!
Lani must be watching too much hanime, the second the tentacles came out of the goo chicken he immediately tells pan to run. He knows the foreshadowing doom that could be impending 😂
I was not prepared for The "MACHO LAN"
Lani accidently hitting the beat from Phil Collins's "In the Air Tonight" at the beginning had me questioning what I just heard 😂
There are very few channels indinXt skip through the sponsor of.
TFS is one of them.
And this one was fantastic.
Macho Lan is brilliant.
When Kaiser said does he, does she, does this dragon... love that
That macho man was immaculately conceived.
Nick is too good at everything I swear
Oh my God, it's Macho Man Lani Savage!
So I know we're all here to both shit on and celebrate GT and all that fun stuff.
But being immediately smacked in the face with Lani doing a Macho Man gimmick might be one of the best things I have ever seen.
lol man at this point i watch you guys for the commercials
Lani as Macho Man is not something I knew I needed until today.
They find out the most unique ways to do a sponsorship, that even manages to make me watch it
You actually got me to watch the ad. 😂😂😂
I wanna know the logic of some of the designs.
Like how does Roshi wishing Goku back to life to fight Vegeta and Nappa= giant slimy electric chicken-dragon???
Logic? In GT? I think you hit your head to hard my friend.
PS:
As for the other shadow dragons-
*Haze* could have responded to people's gripe about humanity polluting the world and went "I'll do it *myself* then. "
*Rage* could have responded to the older couple, who we see in the episode, and for their wish for peace and quiet.
I'm taking notes
Not enough acknowledgment of that "Macho Lan" pun. That was great
New favorite ad promo haha
04:39 *"I'M* the Electricutioner now!"
Macho Lani Savage has got to be my favorite sponsor ad ever...~ (He looks and can play the part, dang it...!~)
Rest In Paradise *Macho Man Randy Savage*
I bet Omega/Sin Shenron will no doubt call Mr. Popo "daddy" after the Freeza saga wish
"Pan, run!"
Oh, noooooooo 🤣🤣🤣
