  • THE TURNPIKE NEEDS OUR HELP. HELP BRING BACK TO LIFE THE ABANDONED TURNPIKE TO USE AS A RECREATIONAL TRAIL BY MEANS OF REPAIRING AND MAINTAINING THIS STRETCH.
ALL WE NEED TO DO TO HELP THIS ALONG IS WRITE A LITTLE BLURB ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PIKE AND HOW YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO FIX IT UP AND COULD CREATE A TOURIST ATTRACTION.
IF YOU CAN DO THIS AND EMAIL IT TO ME I WILL BE SURE IT GETS SENT TO THE RIGHT PERSON TO HELP MOTIVATE THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO SEE HOW IMPORTANT THIS NATIONAL TREASURE REALLY IS.
PLEASE SEND ANY COMMENTS TO ME AT:
    kylemills200@gmail.com
Thanks for helping us bring it back to life for future generations to enjoy!!!
A group of 4 left Leamington Ontario Canada for an adventure down to the abandoned section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Arriving in Breezewood Friday night October 18 we just couldnt wait until morning so we did a trip out under the full moon. I highly recommend visiting this national treasure.
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN THE COMMENTS!
Check out the 2014 video I shot using a drone and the GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition here:

Back in 1994, when I was a young teenager, we lived right next to that abandoned turnpike. We used to ride our dirt bikes all over that turnpike and tunnel on a daily basis. The graffiti you see are likely mine and 8 other guys and girls who lived in the vicinity, although I see a lot of fresh paint. We were the original "Lost Boys Club". Good times and thanks for sharing!

I can't wait to go back, I think about it all the time. On our trip my original intentions were to also visit the gravity hill and Centralia, unfortunately we ran out of time and did not get to see them. We only had 48 hours to get everything done and we had so much fun touring the turnpike we just decided to concentrate the whole trip there.
I plan on hiking it and camping the next time I go which should be in April sometime. I enjoyed biking it but I think hiking and camping out would give me more time to really explore it. I really hope funding comes through to maintain the trail, not restore it but just maintain it so it doesn't completely disappear.
While in Breezewood I found it interesting that nobody cares or has any memorabilia, souvenirs or anything about the turnpike. I mean they have this beautiful piece of history at their backdoor and just nobody cares about it. I found that odd considering how many tourists we saw and talked to that came to bike and hike the trail.

When I stopped by Centralia in Oct 2011 I was disappointed to see how little of the town is left. Pretty much just overgrown foundations of homes and buildings and any remaining roads are also taken over by plant life. There is the hot spots up near the cemetery area that are interesting to visit though. The air coming from some of those tiny shaft holes is hot enough to heat up a meal if you let it sit there for a bit. :)

I only recently learned about Centralia, and I'm about an hour drive from it. A lightweight drone hobbyist, I'd like to do some remote exploration and get a birds-eye view of the entire area. To me it seems odd that there isn't at least 1 massive smoke plume and that it instead comes up small in sporadic areas.

    • @HibernusMortis1
      @HibernusMortis1 10 років тому +1

Its basically because its just deep underground, thin veins of coal strewn though out the area that are smoldering and the smoke plumes find there ways through cracks and crevices up to the surface.
Some interesting reading on the place here...
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia,_Pennsylvania
There was a great hour long documentary on Centralia here on youtube a couple of years ago, but unfortunately it was taken down.

I live in York, PA, and I gotta say, this was pretty interesting (definitely worth a trip for me) and I am also dying to take a trip to Centralia. Not really sure why I haven't yet. BUT!!! I would tell you, as I have been there multiple times, (its like 20 minutes from my house) Gravity Hill is not worth it's own trip for out-of-towners. It is cool, don't get me wrong but it's on a road that's still in use. So once you actually get an opening to do it, you pull up to the end of the road where you either have to turn left or right, you put it in park and roll what seems to be uphill backwards. And that's it. Again not saying it's not cool, but it is literally a 1 minute experience if that.

Great video Kyle and crew! I've wanted to do this for 40 years and finally did it with my friend. We parked in the parking lot where you entered and did the entire round trip. The entrance door to Rays Tunnel was still welded shut when I went last August too. We are going to try to organize a crew to go back again this year. I want to learn more about the abandoned turnpike and see some things I didn't last year. Also, you mention Centralia. It's a good 3 hours east of Sidling Hill. It's spooky but not too much bike riding, except for the graffiti mile. Since you have 4 wheelers, you'll enjoy doing that. Thanks again for sharing. I'm really looking forward to the trip back again now that I watched your video.

I actually live less than a mile from this place. And I will say from experience that you do not want to take those stairs to the top. A few months ago some kids from my school climbed up to the top and one of them fell through. Thankfully he was ok but I was about a 20 foot drop. It's awesome that you came all that way to explore our old turnpike!

Enjoyed your video. In my youth, my family would take the Turnpike to visit my mom's side of the family in NJ. The tunneIs were always a highlight of the trips. I was disappointed to find that these tunnels were bypassed, but traffic often backed up around them. Ten years ago, I visited the western portal of the Rays Hill tunnel. I could only spare a few minutes to walk a few feet into the tunnel, and take some snapshots. I'd love to come back and bike or hike the whole section. But finances aside, my wife's health would not lend itself to accompanying me. Again, thanks for your video.

The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike is the common name of a 13-mile (21 km) stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike that was bypassed in 1968 when a modern stretch opened to ease traffic congestion in the tunnels. In this case, the Sideling Hill Tunnel and Rays Hill Tunnel were bypassed, as was one of the Turnpike's travel plazas. The bypass is located just east of the heavily congested Breezewood interchange for Interstate 70 (I-70) eastbound at what is now I-76 exit 161.

I used to work in Leola, PA. We called it the road to nowhere. We would see it driving from the Hampton Inn in Lancaster to Leola, PA. We would drive under the abandoned overpasses. There would be small trees growing on the overpasses and once we saw cows on the overpasses.

laurel tunnel is used/leased by chip ganassi racing for aerodynamic testing of his race teams cars. he also lets other teams and car manufacturers test there too. it was rumored that toyota (now defunct f1 team) did testing there when they were planning a return to formula 1
its sort of like area 51 of the motorsport testing world. as far as i know its the only place like that in existence because chip ganassi racing has a patent on it too.
they call it a coast down test
both tunnel ends are sealed shut and its now fully climate controlled with air pressure and wind sensors all over the walls. the car blasts down the tunnel at a constant speed (130mph i read) and then the cars are allowed to coast down. to a stop and sensors measure how the cars effect the air in the tunnel. calculating drag and such.

My aunt lives there. I live in central NJ and had to pick her up for a funeral since she doesn't drive. Going through the streets and the tunnel alone is quite eerie, and for as awesome as a silent hill town as it is, it is extremely dangerous due to the sulfur plumes and sinkholes. Do not attempt to go there; do not try to talk to anyone because they won't cooperate due to the government trying to get them out. Beware.

Great trip. Don't want to say my age but I have travelled on this stretch of highway as well as through the abandon tunnels back in the '60s when they were in operation. The two-lane tunnels were frightening when 18-wheelers would pass in the opposite direction at speed. The original road is a piece of history and I'm glad someone has taken time to celebrate it. I think I'll put this on my visit list for this Spring or Summer. Many thanks.

In downtown Breezewood Pa. you find where Rt. 70 meets Rt. 30 and then just look to the right. There is a road that parallels Rt. 76 for about 2 miles (disappearing from view completely twice). That's the old section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike that is in this video above.

She was decapitated in the accident. she was a teacher and on her way to New York for a teachers convention. She was driving and had passengers with her. No one else died but a little girl was paralyzed. I wonder if it happened on this stretch of the turnpike!

The old 2 way traffic tunnel is indeed intriguing and fun but doubt it is enough to create a destination hiking experience. Actually about an hour's drive south of this spot is the Paw Paw Tunnel of the C&O Canal which is an NPS property and allows for great hiking and biking along the former towpath from DC to Cumberland MD.

Honestly, I can't remember how long it took to get through it, the day was so much fun and it is all kind of a blur now. I am guessing about half an hour as we stopped in the center to shut off all the lights to experience true darkness and capture some pics, etc. All I know is I can't wait to go back again but we are going to go by foot and camp out along there somewhere. Probably above Rays or Sideling as there are some great protected camping spots.

Kyle Mills By foot is quite a hike to do both tunnels. Back in early Oct. 2011 my then girlfriend and I did the entire hike from where you started in this video and ended about 1/4 mile after the second tunnel. That was also about our half way point to be able to make it back before it got dark. Altogether I would say it took us about 6-7 hours to do it by foot 3 1/2 hours or so each way. Besides the sore feet that night, it was a great hike! Looking forward to visiting again sometime. :) Just be sure to have comfortable foot wear ;)

I've been here and Centraila. Both places are cool for your first time.

i have been on the turnpike a zillion times and didn't even know about this area. Wish i could ride my horse here, but I would settle for my bike

What I wish they did was fix the turnpike and back into a highway again instead of wasting land for a new highway. This one still can be used.

What an outrage that the State refused to give the perfectly good road to the towns to use. In Connecticut the Merritt Parkway toll road was turned over to the towns when the turnpike was completed and opened. The old Pa Turnpike was already paid for by the motorists who used it.

Cool video....thanks for doing this. Pennsylvania has some weird stuff but pretty cool all the same. Kind of like Centraila.

It was nothing fancy at the time, I used a JVC Everio GZ-HM300BU camcorder until the battery died at the old Cove Valley Plaza then I continued with my cell phone video camera. I also brought along my Nikon D70 to snap some cool pics. I really wish I would have had my GoPro Hero3+ Black at the time... could have grabbed some pretty cool footage but I will be going back again sometime this year and will get some new footage. One of the best trips I have been on and highly recommend

great narration,i picked up the trip from Allegheny Mountain Tunnel right to the end.Did you notice the skunk crossing at approx 14:10? I can only imagine all the people who traveled on this highway before it closed, many long gone.Probably prominent politicians,60's Hippies and rock stars ect ect.you almost got to think ghosts haunt the place at night also..It's people like you that let people like me see these things that we never get a chance to see.Thank-you for this post

I know what your saying. I wish a Flash Mob of people could be organized to show up at different areas of the Abandoned Pa Turnpike. Some would mow the center Grass area and plant fresh grass seed. Others would remove Spray Paint off the walls of the tunnel. Or Paint the walls White to reflect light better in the tunnels. Others would sweep junk off the roadway to make it easier to bike and hike.

Nice work here Kyle. Where you biked in at, is that the only way to get on the turnpike?

    • @KyleMills1

+Charles Rinehart no, there are many different access points to the old highway. Where we entered was just convenient from the motel that is located pretty well next door. One thing though, where we enter it is all downhill from there, meaning it is all uphill going back...
