- EDIT: Viewers have pointed out that I incorrectly stated when the main Mt St Helens eruption occurred. While a smaller eruption did occur on March 27, the main and most memorable eruption happened on May 18. I apologize for the error.
Joe Carter disappeared on May 21, 1950, while skiing with friends near Ape Canyon on Mt. St. Helens. The only evidence he left behind was a trail in the snow indicating he was running away from something at a frantic pace. Ape Canyon has an interesting history dating back to 1924 when a group of miners was harassed at their cabin by a group of "mountain devils".

The research was done by David Paulides. This page is just another that is lifting his work. I went through the videos and every one I saw was from Dave's work. All this guy did was add the artwork which I agree is first rate.

The people producing these videos still deserve credit and success for writing the script, narrating it, and the amazing illustrations. That all involves a lot of work. The creators of the channel still deserve their success. I thoroughly enjoy coming here to see and listen to their videos. I agree acknowledgement of sources is good practice and they need to cite their sources, but otherwise, well done! And I hope they keep up their great work... I’m not naive, so if you’re not happy with my supportive response, you are allowed to keep scrolling or watch another channel...

As a diabetic let me clear this up a little....one day supply of insulin has nothing to with him possibly being in a hurry. If he was suffering from low blood sugar, he wouldn't and couldn't have gone far. If he had high blood sugar, then even a little insulin would have helped him feel better but it wouldn't make him race off.

The portrayed perception of insulin usage in movies and such is so far off compared to the reality of it all. Tremendous difference between Type 1 & Type 2 diabetics. Yet they just lump them all together like they're 'one and the same.'
Yeah, I don’t think anyone really believes insulin. I heard of this case several times. Unless the guy was faking his death I think something not natural occurred m, or that’s what is inferred.

It may sound corny, but my theory is that Carter was spooked by the mountain itself. Mt. St. Helens, being a volcano, may be prone to giving off infrasonic vibrations from time to time. They may be sporadic, but increase in frequency the closer an eruption gets. There have been volcanoes studied which give off these vibrations many decades before the mountain shoots off, and St Helens may have been no exception. After all, the mountain itself blew up less than 3 decades later.
Anyway, infrasound also can play havoc with a person's nervous system, instilling feelings of unease and panic even when there's no reason.
That's basically my theory: Carter was in position for his photoshoot when the mountain gave off an infrasonic "rumble" or "burp." Carter took off down the mountain to his demise, spurred by the panic coursing through his system. This may explain why there are no pursuing tracks and why the searchers also felt uneasy.
Why no body was ever found: people get lost all the time in the Cascades, sometimes when very close to other people. It's very, very easy to disappear in those mountains, sometimes permanently.
It's not just 1 strange case though 🤷🏻♂️
Nothing corny about what you've said here! It's very true about certain places giving off certain vibes. I'm Native American and my grandfather told us many story's about his own childhood and strange things that happened, to him as well as his own father and his grandfather. My grandfather walked The Trail of Tears from Wyoming to Oklahoma, Kentucky and he ended up in Arizona along with many of the Arapahoe that were with him. And some of the stuff he told us made us kids stay in at night. We lived on an old ranch, no street lights, none of that, So I remember having to walk to grandpa's house from my own house using a flashlight, but after hearing of the things they saw and heard, I just stayed home and refused to go out at night.

Excellent point. Many so called “hauntings” have been found to be caused by low frequency, low amplitude sound waves, produced either naturally or mechanically. These types of sounds have been shown to cause extreme nervousness, unease, and even have hallucinatory effects on people.

I’ve heard things in those woods that can’t be explained, craziest things was years later meeting a complete stranger who had a video recording with audio of exactly what I heard in the same area, years apart.

@@jerrybartlett7479 definitely not a cougar, it was deep loud roar that came from a long ways out, we don’t have any large predators out here besides black bear, only other large animals are elk, they Bugle, they don’t roar. The only way to describe it is, sounding like what you would imagine king kong sounds like in the movies, or similar animals/characters in movies when they make them roar. Never heard it before or after that, besides the footage I was shown by a stranger.
I'd never heard this story before, but it jogged my memory of an anecdote John Buchan (the author of 'The Thirty Nine Steps) recounted in his biography. In his youth he was a keen climber, who recalled that on one strange occasion he and his friend were suddenly assailed by an overwhelming feeling of fear, so intense that they turned and ran back down the mountain, taking all manner of risks they would never normally have considered. He put it down to some kind of primeval terror triggered by the solitude. The suggestion below, about a diabetic induced panic sounds a plausible one - he'd have burned up a lot of sugar reserves on the climb.

That really does not sound at all plausible that the experienced skier went with his friends and just took the risk to not be prepared to be out as long as they planned.
Mt. St. Helens has had this kind of activity forever. My mom owned property and lived at the base of the mountain. Several locals of Native heritage told her repeatedly to stay out of the woods because of bigfoot. It wasn't even a secret; it was a given that they are there.

I worked with a man who had diabetes pretty bad. One night he was so out of his head that he told me he loved me when he went to leave, like you would a relative, and walked to the local McDonald's where he tried to force the cashier to keep the change from the $100 bill he gave her for a $1 cheeseburger. Long story short his sugar was so low that he was delirious. Luckily the cashier wasn't a bad person and called an ambulance for him.
I wonder if he was taken underground?? Maybe thats why these beings are rarely seen, and when they are dissapear without much of a trace.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this channel. I had run out of 'creepy occurrence' channels to listen to, and it's hard to find channels that are as good as Bob Gymlan or Bedtime Stories, but this one is right up there.
Beyond Creepy is good too but I prefer channels who give us more infos like a proper time line, background on the victim or friends and places, who filed reports and when etc etc...

yes i was glad to find this channel in my reccomended after watching the newest Bob Gymlan video (i enjoy BedTime Stories&Canam missing&beyond creepy too). Not many channels out there like this and i have to have them to rest at night. Always happy to find a new one!! Another one that is pretty good is Pinnso and that channel has alot of folklore etc in story form (newer one i discovered).

My wife lived in Montana as a teen when Mt Saint Helen's erupted. Ash came down there from it. She scooped up enough to fill a Mason jar, and then capped it. She still has it.

There’s a story about a guy who was in the army stationed somewhere in Washington State he said immediately after the eruption he got ordered to help a group of soldiers redcovery bodies of Sasquatch like beings. He said the government knew about them and they weren’t just apes. Much More human. They lived in really dense forests and caves primarily around the PNW.

I have heard the story about Joe Carter's disappearance a few times . This telling is the only one that clarifies for me the fact that no tracks of any kind could be found that would indicate a ground pursuit . Thank you for that information .
Most of the people re-telling the account of this disappearance want it to fit in their narrative. The lack of tracks doesn't fit their view of nature. So they leave it out.

I also wrote a comment that the eruption occurred on May 18. I got married the day before.

@@DR-qf9th There were 7 babies born that day in the hospital I was in. The nurses were going crazy cause the maternity floor was really busy. I didn't even know about the volcano till I was home from the hospital six days after he was born. I later heard that all the births, and apparently there were many, were because of a change in the atmosphere due to the volcano.

That eruption was actually at 8:32 AM on Sunday, May 18th, 1980. Great video, keep it up!

However, what occurred on March 27th, whilst technically an eruption, was actually nothing more than a portion of the crater collapsing in on itself along with the usual seismic activity that led up to the eruption of May 18th, 1980. This particular case sounds extremely similar to the one I had just recently watched regarding Terrance Woods: the young TV producer who just randomly ran down the side of a cliff at super speed during the middle of a shoot only to never be seen from again. If both of these accounts are accurate then there must be some common link between the two strange incidents. Almost as if some kind of invisible force was messing with their heads to make them do what they did. Truly eerie and scary stuff indeed.

May 18, 1980 around 8:30 a.m. was the morning the mountain erupted. It had ongoing earthquakes and pressure rising underground prior for months but the date you said at the start of the program was of no real consequence. I lived thirty miles away from the volcano than and now. I'll never forget that day.

The incident then resulted in the disappearance of a man named Mitch Williams. It was noteworthy in that he was a man whom was considered highly-skilled, fully-capable, albeit prone to erratic behavior. Friends and loved ones stated Williams had been receiving death threats at the time of his disappearance in regards to prompting a 3-1 series lead.

I have had that feeling while out hiking, like somethings looking straight through you, I was close to home in a popular spot with no firearm it was so bad I picked up baseball size rocks thinking I was about to defend me and my wife, after standing there for a minute or two the feeling went away and we have not been back to that spot in years.

I’ll play Agent Scully for a moment. I think Joe Carter had some sort of diabetic episode. He either felt it coming on and tried to get down the mountain quickly to get help or he had some degree of diabetic shock and became incoherent in his actions. Then he skied or walked off in a direction that was difficult for the searchers to find his ski tracks/ foot prints. Maybe he traveled over rocky ground, or maybe it snowed heavily before the searchers arrived. Whatever it was, the searchers were never able to find where he wandered off and died. After all, the searchers aren’t going to search an area that’s not safe for them to go through. Someone in shock wouldn’t think that way. It’s also possible that his body was found by a wild cat and dragged back to its layer.
he is diabetic yet a trip up the mountain costs a lot of energy, he must have had alot of snacks with him to keep his bloodsugar on level to compensate for the physical stress, unless something happend to his rations or he didnt pack enough i doubt he went too low
having too high levels wouldnt have much short time effects unless it was incredible high and even then could it be counteracted by either insulin or by working out
maybe he accidently overdosed but i kinda doubt that unless he wanted to disappear, but why do it with 20 friends around... but then again he went ahead alone

Hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) shock is more common than hyperglycemic shock, though both can happen. Perhaps he WAS frightened by something, skied off, didn’t stop to eat a snack, sustained an injury and became disoriented.
Doubtful. As a Type I Diabetic since I was around two years old, that would really not be how it works. Granted everyone is different, but by the time you feel it coming on, if you do not have the supplies with you, it is too late to go running for them, at least in the way described. Too high can cause a type of fog drastically lowering thinking or reaction ability, or more relevantly, too low of a blood sugar causes the same, along with the overall loss of the ability to think and reason, body strength, coordination, etc. By the time you get to the hallucination stage, you pretty much are unable to do much of anything, never mind ski or jump over anything.

Fred Beck didn't write *_"I Fought the Apemen of Mt. St. Helen's."_* It was written by his son, Ronald Beck. In fact, Ronald took liberties with the story, by adding/changing details, which contradict what Fred told Roger Patterson in 1967 (recorded on cassette tape), *before* the 'book' was written. To be fair, it was really only a 22 page pamphlet, than a 'book",

I've personally witnessed a "situation" in the foothills surrounding Mt. St. Helen's in 1979 when I was 11 years old, while picking wild blueberries. I will never forget the intense fear I felt, along with my family and 3 adults that were friends of my parents (we all saw it). I've tried telling people about it when I was younger, only to be met with laughter and skepticism. People just don't want to believe in things they've not seen for themselves, or that has not been proven by science. Those types of people are very close-minded.
I'd love to hear about your "situation" because I 💯 would believe you and ive no clue who you are! 👀 One with a closed mind definately isn't someone you'd want to disclose that info to...their brains aren't big enough to process it.

I live near the area. Have been up to the Fred Beck cabin site twice. I first heard the Carter story 40 years ago. The main eruption of Mt. St. Helens was on May 18th 1980. March 27th was the day the first plume of ash was released skyward. Remember it like it was yesterday. Also, Beck shot the mountain devil which tumbled into the canyon, the afternoon BEFORE the attack on the cabin, not on the way out. I suggest better fact checking while writing the scripts. Indeed, many Sasquatch bodies were found after the eruption, and the feds used the military to depose of bodies and cover up all intel about it. People involved were threatened to zip their lips.

I dicovered your channel last night and I'm hooked. I've been binging on it, I can't look away...maybe in part because I was once missing. At 18 I was waiting for the bus to go to work, long story short, I was kidnapped at gunpoint by a serial killer. I was his only survivor, and the last. It took me a week to escape. It was so fast, one minute I was there and then I was gone. He boasted to me at one point that this is what he does, all along the west coast, from Alaska to California. It was a week of brutality that is unimaginable to most people. I'm grateful to be alive.
I'm also fascinated by the Pacific Northwest stories. I love this area, it's so beautiful. The rain forests are so incredibly beautiful, and so dense and huge...trying to find someone who's lost is a job for the most experienced and skilled. We've had searchers get lost. I love exploring but would never, never go alone. And never get separated. Ever.

Think about what kind of nocturnal creatures live in caves deep in the mountains, they only come out at night and witnesses don't live to tell their story
That's what they lying and sold "scientists" would have you believe (in order to discredit the Creator, God Almighty). The earth is nowhere near that old and it can be proven to those who care enough to find the Truth.

Just hiked Mt St Helen's last year solo with a 2am start. That was the creepiest forest I've ever walked in. The canopy was so tall and the forest floor so dark it felt like a horror movie and I was watched the whole way. It was so bad that when I saw a pair of eyes reflecting off my headlamp (it was an elk) I freaked out. It's definitely a spooky place.
I think the diabetic fact is the answer. I have type 1 diabetes and in instances of low blood glucose I have experienced very irrational behavior.

This is literally in my backyard 😭 I've heard the stories but still have hammock camped the basin of Ape Canyon and snow camped in the Jackpine Shelter where the miners were supposedly attacked lol. I'm always armed when camping up in that area (cougar territory) but it does linger in my mind when "hanging out" in the midnight trees up there. I don't let it get to me too much though... Not too much a believer, but it is compelling nonetheless. Mt. St. Helens is such a beautiful, serene area so I will continue hiking and looking out for him/them 😁
Lots of sensationalist hysteria surrounding stories like this from people that probably don't spend much (if any) time alone in remote areas. I've spent many nights alone in the mountains of Oregon and Washington and never experienced any unexplainable or strange events

The guy was a diabetic. It’s rather likely this had something to do with the disappearance. If insulin levels drop, or, become elevated. A person can find themselves in a dangerous situation. A diabetic coma can leave a person confused, disoriented. Unresponsive to situations and your surroundings
Usually a diabetic coma leaves a person in a coma....... way past the point of confused and disoriented......
An aunt of mine would even suffer hallucinations when she had a diabetes episode....
So instead of seeking help from the men he started racing in the direction opposite of them?

I love this channel and the stories that you cover. They're excellently narrated and the details and info given is amazing. I have a common interest in missing persons cases also. But not just these particular cases with strange occurrences having to do with their cases, such as the Missing 411. But also in the missing persons cases in my area of southeastern Kentucky. Because of the incredible amount of people who go missing here. But they're killed by other individuals, for the most part. Just never found. I'd like to do something similar in the future. If I had the extra time and resources.

I was sitting on my BMX bike about to head to school when there was a sonic boom that was later followed by ash dusting everything. Not a whole lot, as we lived in Springfield Oregon, which is quite a ways south. I remember seeing people collecting the ash and using it to make money by sealing it in glass vials, or in other ways like mixing it into clay to incorporate the stuff into artistic forms to remember the day.
I was a college student in Portland, Oregon when Mt. Saint Helens blew. My Mother called at 10 pm and told me to go look outside. She said "just do it ". The atmosphere was totally bizarre the next day. Just like you'd expect after the end of the world. 😂🤣😅 Very strange.

Fascinating story, not only about an incident, but how the area got it's name-- which turned out to be a story unto itself.
This is only the second vid I've watched- the first being the disappearance of young Dennis Martin. I'm always interested in stories like this-- not only in the mystery itself, but how people in or around a group can just vanish into thin air with few clues.
Next up is the Charlie Bauman/Teddy Roosevelt video. Good stuff and the illustrations add to the mystery of these stories.

Um, there was no record of an indication of avalanche that day. Even if he thought there was, that wouldn't explain never being able to find his body and ski equipment. He vanished

I'm sure it's been mentioned though I couldn't readily find it in the comments. MtStH catastrophically erupted on May 18, 1980. There had been some Eruption events before that as she warmed up and cleared the pipes, but the main event was May 18. I was in kindergarten and we actually have like a minor survival story during the disaster. Love the channel. Thank you for your hard work!

fyi... The 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens - which began with a series of small earthquakes in mid-March and peaked with a cataclysmic flank collapse, avalanche, and explosion on May 18 ... i enjoy your presentations, nice work!
I read Beck's book on line, fascinating but terrifying... U left out 2 scary points though- 1, the 'apes' attack on the cabin was so savage, Beck and his friends were so glad they built it so sturdy- but one of the creatures got an arm thru the wall and tried to grab an axe affixed to it.... And 2, when the men fled the next morning, and shot the creature they saw, and it fell into the canyon- the men looked for it, but it had disappeared, which troubled them greatly...they knew it had to be dead, but thought the other creatures moved its body... I highly recommend Beck's book... 👍🇦🇺🙋

Funnily enough, my university lecturer was also called Joe Carter. He used to do rock climbing and man, did he get in some crazy situations from what he told me. Once he climbed up the wrong side of the mountain, one without the eyelet he could attach his ropes to. All he had was a skinny ledge he was standing on. He could either climb up without a rope, or have a long fall waiting for him below. He luckily made it, and his friend who was his spotter and was a veteran climber gave up rock climbing that day cold turkey. It could have ended so badly
