It’s so relaxing and peaceful when you can sit there and see what is out of your control and you don’t stress. People think you’re “ too relaxed” even family will say this but one thing school didn’t teach us… family can be problems because they too are individuals with issues.
Your relentless research, reflections, insight, and generosity are World Class. I’m grateful for all of the content you share. By putting your advice into action, I’ve strengthened myself in ways that have made me a better husband, father, son, brother,, neighbor, employee, and citizen. I set new baselines regularly and am constantly striving to expand my comfort zone. Take care of yourself, your family, and your business - and if you still have time & energy, then please keep videos like this coming.
Something that I have for better or worse learned over time is that I will never be immune to criticism. I have worked so hard to improve myself, and be better and part of that is to try to escape outside criticism. To try to transcend criticism. I have chosen the high road and the path of responsibility. Higher education, a high responsibility high stress career, parenting, being a good husband, bodybuilding and strength training all things that I chose to work on, but I never realized that by choosing those I am also choosing a life where I will be criticized. I am choosing the life of responsibility and improvement and that goes hand in hand with criticism. I choose to walk a path where I will be criticized every day. I criticize myself, and I am criticized by the outside world and I am choosing that road every day because I will never be better without it. Choosing to be better invites more criticism, and we need it. Even if you feel it’s unfair even when you are trying your best you can’t outwork criticism you can’t transcend it.
I don’t control whether the algorithm puts this video in front of me. I control whether I play it. I don’t control how long this video is. I control whether I watch it. I don’t control in what language the audio is speaking to me when it first starts. I control what language it will be in once I adjust the settings.
Discovered Ryan a couple of weeks ago on here. Reading Obstacle is the Way now. You want to get your life together and need a good roadmap? This and his teachings is the ultimate map for life. Jeff/Boston MA.
I'm 20 yo. I was a student-athlete and I feel like going back into sports / training after 4 years of no training, gym, or exercise at all, just play. I feel like I'm so lucky that I got into reading this late april 2021 and slowly getting into stoicism. I'm going to work on myself even more and train myself while it's not too late to enjoy my youth.
Crazy story, I was actually listening the "The Obstacle is the Way" the summer of 2019 training for my first marathon. It was hot and humid, and I sure did "find my limit". 14 miles in, I ended up passing out, hitting my head, and was taken to the hospital. Stoicism is powerful, but dangerous!
That's why he said "most" of those limitations!! "Learning when to push through and when not to push through". I'm a triathlete so I know a little about running, there's a fine line between beating the weak talk and pushing too far. Always got to throw some sense in there and take care of your body while also not listening to the talk, but also listening to your body. Fine line for sure
Im reading Seneca discources right now and fascinated how much he disslikes physical conditioning with comments such as "sweat shall only be the result of the duty or working", "time spent on training instead could be soent where it matters, the mind and soul." This whilst in his older age getting carried outside by his slaves on a "walk" and clearly being obese or overweight as depicted in many pictures and statues.

Freediving is a great discipline to teach you to push through the chest spasms and reach a calmness on the other side. I just can't find that same experience in any other endeavor. If I run, I keep pushing but I don't "break through" any barriers to where it's gets easier. Same with Muay Thai or weightlifting. Is it a misleading idea, that we can break through a barrier? No matter how far I push, I'm still tired, winded, out of breath.
I'm deleting a lot of what I said initially. A friend of mine told me that Ryan had some serious mental health battles, which i get. I just want you to realize, Ryan, people can disagree with you without being "idiots and assholes." If I remember correctly, Socrates was quite an influence on your heroes and he questioned everything. Part of my initial comment: This guy called half his followers "idiots and assholes". if you know ANYTHING about stoicism, you'll realize this makes him a hypocrite. Please just read Marcus Aurelius yourself if you are interested. He is very eloquent and easy to understand. You don't need a biased interpreter with political and monetary motives. You should apologize to half of your audience at some point. We all have demons, Ryan, and remember that your audience is made up of other humans trying their best.
Chris bosh’s calmness during the 2013 NBA championships against the San Antonio Spurs was really admirable when Bosh rebounded the ball last seconds passes it to Allen BANG
“To grow, you need someone around you to tell you when you’re wrong.” I’m guessing you have not been asked to speak to the military. That is not a concept senior military officers would be receptive to. But then that had to be a factor in the outcome in Afghanistan.
How many books have read so far,? Ryan, to have exceptional knowledge, in a narrow domain,OK n something like stoicism, needs a lot of effort, I'm guessing anywhere between 500 -600 books, I mean number dosen't matter, but ,are u a nerd, lol 😅
I really enjoy your videos on Stoic philosophy. And I try to implement them into my life. However, I would like to give notice to a part of the video I found disappointing. Namely that there were no female athletes portrayed in your “control how you play” montage. Stoicism through its originators are mostly male dominated. The philosophy is sound, but in this modern era if women are to embrace it, they may feel the need to be represented as well. But overall a great video.
Hay Walter if women don't feel represented so do everyone else! Geez give me a break man or woman! Who the f*** cares! There's no puerto Ricans! OH my gosh I'm offended, I'm a victim poor me..... what a joke
You had my interest until I found out you voted for Joe Biden😂 Joe Biden?? I’m no Trumpster but I find it very difficult to take you seriously now my man.
Hey Ryan, I love your books! Your insight and reflection on how to live a stoic life has been a very positive “game changer” in my life. In the middle of this pandemic, I have started my own mindset coaching business, and your videos, podcasts, and books have become the cornerstone of my message when coaching others. Thank you for all that you do, and for the great wealth on positivity that you are bringing to this world! Sincerely Paul
Because you disagree with him on politics ?? Learning to separate somebody’s opinions & their ideas in which is useful and what is not is a great critical thinking exercise
While Ryan’s videos admittedly often have good content, he is becoming increasingly difficult to watch. Ryan, if you’re really concerned about helping people through stoicism, then, PLEASE, tone down the arrogance and the crass commercialism. Get a grip, guy. Think long term.
Thanks for the inspiration. I'll be silently saying "you control how you play" forever.

Working out has always saved my life even back then when I was doing it for fun unconsciously just to look good!

Why do you think he disliked physical conditioning so much?
