Long Long Honeymoon in the past few days o
That road is no joke! My husband and I use to live in Kalispell, so we went up there all the time. One of the most beautiful places ever, but scary at the same time. I use to work at the hospital up there , so I got some stories. I would say Glacier National Park is one place you have to see with your own eyes. Pictures and hearing stories just does not do any justice.
I lived in Kalispell to, and spent a great deal of time hiking in Glacier Park growing up. I have driven, Going-to-the-Sun Road many many times and it still makes me nervous to this day. :-) unfortunately I haven't been able to make my way back to the Flathead Valley or to Glacier Park since the massive fire at Lake McDonald Lodge. I hope it's not too bad...
@@dadsdone3524 It is..
Just went up a couple months ago, it was quite scary, wow.
That's not even the scariest road in glacier National Park tho
I am going to be staying in Kalispell in a few months when I attend the Under The Big Sky festival. I am going to hit Glacier after. Should be a great trip.
The last time I drove from the west to the east, we met a line of vintage Rolls Royce cars. Must have been a couple dozen. With the wife on the passengers side over looking the beautiful views, she came un-glued when I was looking more at the cars than the road. Thanks for bringing the memories back. Great video.
Thanks for sharing a great story!
Oy! I would not be able to drive or ride on that road. Heights never use to bother me. I use to love the beautiful view/scenary. But now I'm 61 and for some unknown reason roads like that scare the heck out of me. I mean my hands get real sweaty and my heart pounds like a bass drum. But I don't know why. It bothers me that I feel this way now because I'm missing out on great beauty. Oy!!!
The landscape on the other side of Going to the Sun Road from the Lake McDonald side is so starkly opposite of the beauty you see getting to the top. And, once on the other side, you'll be rewarded with a fantastic lodge once at the bottom! The road is only passable in warm months. :) Love all your posts, Loloho, thank you.
Been on this road a number of time over the last 40 years. Always spectacular.
I drove I-24 eastbound from Mounteagle, TN to Chattanooga on a 6% downhill grade and THANKED GOD that I drove GTTSR first!🙏
Glacier National Park is an incredibly beautiful place! I'd love to go back there again!
Going to the Sun Road is one of my favorite places in the world. I talked about it to my now wife about for many years and we went last year and she and her sisters loved it. We only got as far as Mt. St. Mary as the road was closed but the sisters and I climbed to the peak observation post through the snow. Its wonderful and every American should experience GTTSR and Rushmore!
I took a cab from Kalispell to pick up the Red Bus , and she was waiting for me, when Returned after 8 hours. I love Montana. It was super safe and relaxed, and no one killing you.
We availed ourselves of the historic red buses that the Park owns and just rode the road, if you know what I mean. It's a spectacular view, but not for those afraid of heights. Wonderful experience.
This is so helpful. My husband has been a bit hesitant to drive the Going-To-The-Sun Road himself because of drop-off. Glad to know about free shuttle. Thanks.
I had just brought a youth group to Glacier to go rafting on a return trip from Idaho. We planned to do the GTTSR, but wound up behind schedule, and with all the traffic on a Friday afternoon, decided against it. After watching this video, I'm actually glad I didn't attempt this road with 2 twelve passenger vans full of teenagers!
My group did, there was barely enough room to fit by but the thing is you can't turn around. It's more sketchy on the lake Mcdonald side than st. Mary's because it's a lot more curvy.
It was an enjoyable drive. Yes, you need to pay attention, but millions of people do it. The tour bus is nice too.
My 20 meg download speed buffers on 4K and 1440 but plays 1080 just fine. What I could see in 4K was wonderful. That road has been cloudy, rainy, and socked in at the top everytime I've driven it. We took the Red Bus tour last time and that was a lot of fun with our NATCOA Truck Camper group. You get a driver who narrates along the drive and makes several stops on the way with time at the top. Well worth it . Thanks for this video. Very refreshing. It will go well with my Porter.
I've done it twice. Once from both directions. Both times on my motorcycle. Beautiful.
David Giles I’m scared to death of heights and went up there on the back of a Harley, you’ll be happy to know they guy driving survived....haha
This is definitely a bucket list item now.
We have visited many, of the U.S. National Parks and Glacier was the most beautiful. Utah is amazing also, they have five National Parks
Did this once in the Park Bus. I can say I could never do it again. I’ve lost the edge so to speak. Most scary road I’ve ever been on. If you went over the edge you would never stop for at least a mile. I have driven the west entrance to Yosemite once. Almost as bad. If you do not like heights don’t torture yourself. Lol. When we got to the top all I could think of was that we had to go back down. If heights do not bothering you and no guard rails then go and enjoy.
I've been to this park several times; it's one of my favorites. You've provided excellent advice, Sean. Thanks!
I drove up and down this road. It crosses the Continental divide at the top. Did it in a 1984 Chevy Caprice wagon. That car was a beast.
Sean, this is one of the great motorcycling roads in america, as great as it is in the car/ truck, it's amazing on a bike! Oh and your right on with your tips Take your time it's worth it.
Been there. It’s probably best to make it a one way road only.
I have only been on this road on a motorcycle. Your tips are excellent. The very best time to go is in the early am and that is the best time to see bear. I was working the Chief Mountain Port of Entry one summer and the long time locals say it has had significant accumulation of snow in every month of the summer.
Bob Bayne me too, only on a Harley!
Definitely one of the prettiest drives in America.
We rode Going To The Sun Road during a bicycle tour in 2001, the best vacation ever. It was in July and we had sleet at Logans Pass, That made for an interesting descent :)
I was blessed to be stationed at Malmstrom AFB for three years so my wife and I experienced and camped the park in all season. I first traveled the Going to the Sun Road when I was 12 with my parents. I was hooked! Glacier Park is my favorite park and I've been to most of them. Drive the road. It's not a scary as you think. Just be slow and steady.
+Bill Sprague Thanks, excellent advice, and I agree - Glacier is a spectacular park!
Bikers can use the Going to the Sun Road before 11 AM and after 4 pm in summer! We started early and made it to Logan Pass well before 11 Am! It was a beautiful ride up and less frightening than driving as a passenger. Thank you auto and motorcycle drivers for the courtesy of moving over around cyclists!
Thank you
I will put that in my BUCKET list.
My next bucket list is Yellow Stone, Grand Teton and Glacier.
It is long drive from So. Cal. But I love to drive, I even drive to Alaska and back 3 years ago.
Thank you for up loading.
Great job on video and your tips! Wife and I rode our Goldwing from east to west on the sun road. She did not want to go west to east. The drop is, wow, a drop! Logan's pass was special and we saw long horn sheep standing on rocks as we went around the tight turns. Like you stated, be prepared for all kinds of weather. We rode with full electric suits in July. Trip of a life time and having traveled all over the USA and Canada, Glacier is a must see. Nothing rivals the scenery!
Wow! That 4K really pops! Nice work Sean.
At the apex we met thee most beautiful fawn who walked right up to us, was magical
I have biked but not driven this road and it was informative to see the tips you gave to drivers as I do plan on returning in the next couple of weeks to both bike and drive. Just as you recommend that everyone should take this road I particularly recommend it on a bicycle now with the advent of the bikes virtually anyone can ride this . I will probably regret this advice when I’m caught in a cluster of novice riders one day. Just remember when you hear someone coming behind you saying “on your left” it means you stay to your right-you don’t go to your left !😂😂😂😂 Yes I have had that frequently happen.
Just drove it last week . Unfortunately for us the weather was bad, from the loop to Logan"s pass. So much fog you couldn't see but 50 feet feet in front of the truck or oncoming cars. Will have to go back again sometime. Your video was our inspiration for going. So we will watch it again and again until we can go back. As you mentioned Logan's Pass parking lot Very busy, even after Memorial Day. Thanks for the videos
+Radioman 1957 Thanks for your kind words... Sorry the weather turned on you! That has happened to us before too.
Going to the Sun Road is my favorite and has
been for 60 years. My dad worked as a Jammer (the name for drivers of the big open top Ford buses that still traverse the pass!"
+Scott Lockwood Thanks, very cool that you have some family history there! I'd like to ride in one of those open top buses sometime just to experience it. One of our favorite places too....
Been there, unprepared for the wild ride! Great, unforgettable experience!
Great video for those of us contemplating driving this scenic road. And the tips are priceless. Passing this along to my travel mates! Thx very much for posting!
My brother and I rode this on our motorcycles. Simply stunning, beautiful and scary as hell.
I go last weeks of May or beginning of June.. bike myself up there :)
As I make this comment it is 2019. Back in 1999, I camped near Hungry Horse, MT. I was warned about bears and I took all the precautions. The Going To The Sun Highway offers breathtaking scenery. I rode my bike for a short distance near the Logan Pass visitor center(I rode "over the pass"). The Red buses were not running that summer, but they have since been rebuilt and are being rebuilt once again. The rides look like fun, but they are not cheap. I was not aware of a free shuttle, but my truck worked just fine. Go there. You'll enjoy it.
Wonderful, practical video. I feel semi-prepared now.
Great tips and wonderfully narrated! Thank you!
Spent a month there one summer and we love Glacier and plan to go back.
My favorite road in America! We did it on motorcycles and had an avalanche bury the road 15' deep...in August! We just had to wait until they got it shoveled off the side, no short cuts.
allenslansky wow hope no one got buried or pushed off the road !
YIKES! That view was amazing, but crazy.
Took the Sun road on my Yamaha 750 back in the 70's and it was awesome:)
My family use to drive on this road every summer.
Going up tomorrow!! Cramming for finals with all these awesome vids!
Wow. Beautiful video of a spectacular place. Good tips too. I was up there a few years back, now That I have an Airstream, I want to make a return visit.
GTTS is a great training ground for drivers on handling hairpin turns and narrow roads. (And even on using lower gear to slow descent on the way down from Logan Pass.)
Christopher U.S. Smith I sure hope people don’t go their to train !!!! Yikes
I would suggest to take the tour bus that goes from south to north it’s approximately eight hours but what a grand trip it is!
Thanks for the heads up! WE BRING BOOKS AND READ as we just did in Sequoia National park, while waiting for the pilot car, or light to turn green; this was a 30 minute delay
I salute anyone who chooses to bring books! We need more people bringing and reading books in this country. 👍
Wish I had been told about the shuttle when I tried to do the drive with a 34 footer and was turned back. Never mind the rest of the park was Superb.....
+James Allan Sorry to hear that, but now you have a perfect excuse to return to the park!
We drove this road so many times-always a thrill. But yes, we’d see some motor homes and trailers turned back-they had no idea how sharp some of the turns and switchbacks are.
I'm going to drive it tomorrow for the first time; I cant wait. Thanks for the tips; enjoyed the video.
I'll be driving that road in early September this year. Woohoo...
I went in this road once. Went on a hike back to our car. 13 miles was very hard and I was 12. I’m 13 now and can’t believe I made it😂😂😂
I'm going here and to Yellowstone this Sept. I've never been to Montana or Wyoming so I'm so looking forward to this new adventure. I usually go to CA and visit their parks, esp. Death Valley, so this will be abit of a welcome change. I've drove up Pike's Peak in CO a couple times and that's pretty scary the first time. Also, been on the high roads in Denali Park and those were some "cliff hangers", too, lol.
It looks like it may have some great echo effects. Great for playing the flute.
This road isnt nothing not scary just beautiful.
Did this in my grandpas camper when I was a teenager. Boy was it scary lol.
My earlier post should have said “with the advent of the E bike virtually anyone can now manage riding Going to the Sun Road; E bikes are regular bicycles but they have a small electric motor added to provide some horse power when mere mortal & tired legs do not suffice. Google bikes: May add a whole new dimension to your life ! Happy cycling everybody- be safe!
awesome video. it looks so much different from the last time I ventured there in 1977.
One tip you left out - pull over and let people pass if you are super slow and holding up a line of faster cars. Lots of time in the worst months it's almost pointless - but for many locals that drive the road regularly for work or recreation - get out of the way every now and then!
Dang, I had to watch it twice, once in the "AUTO setting of 480, and then in the 4K. Awesome difference. It just took 35 minutes in 4K due to slow Internet connection, but actually it was nice to see the super resolution with freeze frame as the video had to stop and download every 7 seconds. It was a lot like watching a very clear slide show !!
+Going NoWhereFast Thanks for making the effort and for letting me know. It took me forever to get this video uploaded (the file is 13 GB!) but I thought that it would be cool for everyone to see Going-to-the-Sun Road in 4K! I will try to shoot some more 4K footage in the future, especially when we find ourselves amidst that kind of scenery.
Is it safe to take my service dog on the Logan Pass Hike? Thank you for this, it gives me an idea of what the road is like and that is important.
Yikes, I barely survived Mt. Washington as a passenger! I drove myself up to “Castle in the Clouds” and was terrified doing that! 🙄 😂 I would probably die of a Heart Attack on this Road!
Awesome quality video, thanks. Adding this park to the bucket list.
The top tip should be to check your brakes before getting into a place where you cannot turn back. We were on our honeymoon and we're looking forward to the drive. It got extra exciting when we found out that we had no brakes just before ascending from the west. We found no turn around after we got stuck in line. We had to be creative to try to keep ourselves and others safe. It was a perfect viewing day and many people slowly walked across parts of the road in the upper portions. I have an intense fear of heights and I can say...if I can survive all of that, anyone can. Hopefully one day we will return for a slower trip through with working brakes!
Yikes! Now that's a ride you'll never forget! Yes, great tip about the brakes. :)
Another good tip would be to shift down to second gear or so, when coming back down from Logan Pass, to let your engine slow you down, instead of cooking your brakes. It's about 12 miles from Logan Pass down to where the road really levels out, which is awful long time to be riding one's brakes.
Matt Teigen Amen. NPS used to have signs advising down shifting to 2nd to cool off the brakes when descending from Logan Pass.
Just got back, so far one of my favorite places...
Really great tips. Thanks!
You mentioned wokalars..did you happen to see any males? They are rare, but I understand they are beautiful, and if you catch them at the right time of the morning, you can walk right up to them. Just another reason to go early.
+Mike Read Wookalar sightings in Glacier are exceedingly rare, but you may occasionally encounter them in the backcountry. Although they can be beautiful, my recommendation is that one should never approach or even make eye contact with a male wookalar, especially during mating season - maintain a safe viewing distance at all times. 👍
Very helpful. Heading that way in Sept
This is the perfect info for me. I'll be riding my Harley Road Glide threw there in August for the first time. I'll be sure to stop and do the hike you mentioned. And also do a Vlog about it.. thank you!!!
It is definitely something I do not regret doing ,even if I white knuckled my way through it. Although once was more than enough as the driver....
I hate heights so thank you! Now I don't have to go in person, I got to go through video! Beautiful though:)
It looks wonderful.... if you get a chance try the road from Williams Lake BC. to Bella Coola BC. It`s a truly amazing experience.... But not if your a white knuckle driver or passenger!!
+Sam Smith Thanks for the tip! We will add that to the list. BC has some incredible scenery.
Been up there on a motorcycle. Beautiful drive!
definitely a great biking road!
We were in Glacier National Park June 11th 2008 and it snowed 8 inches !
+David Leder Yikes! If you watch to the very end of this video, you'll see that one year we had snow on the ground in August. You never know what you'll find at those higher elevations.
Just to clarify ....we had blizzard conditions at the campground in St Marys and the Going To The Sun Road was closed until July that year because of snow ! So thanks for your video !
what a trip !!!...like you say' going on the bucket list !!!
t

The ascent from the east side is the opening scene from The Shining.
Thanks for sharing! I will have the pleasure of seeing all of this !!! Just in 4 days!!
love your video. thank you for the tips. it is now on our bucket list.
+Roger Higham Thanks! See you guys at Logan Pass! :D
That drive looks amazing. I just discovered this park yesterday. I'm seriously considering visiting next September.
Yea...my husband is gonna kill me when we drive this road this summer! Looks beautiful!
Great video! Thanks for sharing. It's similar to Grossglockner Alpine Road in Austria
Thats a beautiful place thanks for shareing
I just visited Glacier and this road is incredible. One observation is that drivers of large trucks and SUVs don't know how to stay on their side of the double yellow line, like you see with the driver in this video. It's crazy that people buy these vehicles, never learn how to drive them properly, then go drive narrow curvy roads like this.
I tried going up from the East side thinking it would help being on the inside of the road. Nope, I got black and white tunnel vision and had to turn around at the next pullout. Ended up driving around the park through the reservation to get to the West side of the park.
Thank you for these videos. We just returned from our 1st Yellowstone and Grand Teton trip and of course fell in love. Love all the tips and info. on your videos...we are now planning to visit Glacier next Sept. so the research begins. This is on my list, but I need some advice on if we should start our trip on the East side or West side. I will be making reservations soon, as I see lodging books very far in advance. Any lodging recommendations you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again from Arizona!
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thank you. Im going last week of July 2018
So how was the trip is it everytging an adventurer would love?
Great film, the 4K quality was striking. We were there in July last year so it was a bit more crowded :-)
+Jeff Evans Thanks, yes this video was shot on the last day the road was open to the public, in October 2015. This is probably the least crowded it ever gets (for the public, anyway).

Hi , i really like your video. I have a few questions if you dont mind:
1) do we need to reseve the shuttle bus for going to the sun road?
2)Does the bus stop along the road for u at some nice view points or are there bus stops that you can hop in hop off?
3) do you have the link for the bus schedule?
I plan to go in June 2021 so your info are very helpful. Truly appreciate !
many thanks
Thanks for the video! I'm riding my Indian out there in a couple weeks...can't wait!
Have a great trip! Your timing in the season should be just about perfect.
Drove part of this road in a school bus I converted into a hotor home in the 80s.
Nice. I want to go back. Biking it might be fun in the right weather but looks like it restricted 11a-4p in peak season.
I love this park. I take the Red Bus.
Great video and tips. Thanks for the enlightenment.
For what it's worth from an ex-Jammer (#86 in '86) with over 100 crossings logged that one summer: #1: Avoid high traffic days (good luck). #2: Good weather only. #3: Earlier/later in season if gamble works (or in days themselves as people tend to get settled in camps/motels in early evenings and PLENTY of light long after expectations. #4. Don't get behind a slow-touring Red Bus. #5. Don't fall for old Jammer trick of cueing in all passengers to suddenly point up a random slope as if spotting wildlife. Bus pulls over, triggers most traffic behind to do same; people jump out w/binocs/cams and by time they realize nothing's there, the Red's a mile ahead. Note this works for private vehicles, too! (author: "It Happened in Glacier National Park." Good tour!) Key to GNP: NEVER gets boring or casual despite getting to live 3 years in East. And GTTS is but the ittty-bitty cherry on top.
