I've owned an MG 6 for 3years from new. Superb diesel pulling power, if a little noisy. Never let me down. Only issue is an occasional warning light that pops up but resets when you restart the car. MG dealer in Maidstone aren't very good!
Too right mate. MG motor have fucked up. There’s loads of MG3’s sitting in Longbridge and they promised the MG3 manufacturing would stay there. It’s just Chinese now. Nothing british about it.
I think if they really want people to consider buying an MG other than for its value, they should perhaps bring out a small, good looking convertible sports car that's electric.
great car and for the price amazing just visited the new mg showroom in Marylebone (london) and had a good experience with the team there. would defiantly recommend especially with the current deals they have at the moment, its almost like driving away for free
They decided not to offer it with a manual transmission in Australia. I couldn’t believe it when I read it was going to be automatic only - I’d never consider a small four cylinder with an automatic gearbox.
The problem the MG3 and the others in the MG line up, are the seriously dated powertrains and the lack of any active safety kit whatsoever. You can't even spec AEB on any of its cars. With some small capacity turbo engines like all other cars and some updated tech, these would sell really well as they're stylish and the warranty is excellent.
You didn't mention the Renault Clio Mk4s boot space at 300litres. Pretty decent. This MG isn't half bad. When they can make cars that are ANCAP of 5 stars, then they have a chance. But people aren't going to buy a car made in China with a 1 or 2 star safety rating. Other than the safety and a few other little things, it's not a half bad car. Drove one before choosing a Clio for a little runaround car. It was honestly ok, and they seem to be getting better every year. If they can build precision built smart phones and computers that are works of art, they should be able to make cars in the same manner.
Small correction of your review: The 1.5 litre engine was designed and built by SAIC rather than GM which designed the 1.0 litre turbo engine for the ZS SUV. All SAIC did was invest money in to the SGE as it is strictly a GM product. Cheers..
There is no mention here about the NSE engine being based on a GM design. www.aronline.co.uk/news/mg-news/news-a-talk-and-a-tour-at-mg-birmingham/ SMTC are known to base their engines on other designs though, i.e. the 1.9 litre diesel engine for the MG6 was based on the design of a Kunming Yunnei Power engine Cheers..
As an aside, the reason why China favours 1.5 litres and not 1.6 and above for their majority of engines in less expensive cars is that the Chinese government had good tax breaks for cars with 1.5 litres and less. It's nothing to do with vehicle emissions as China probably has the worst in that respect. www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/04/15/fords-new-engine-is-all-about-china.aspx
Mystifies me why entry level manufacturers like MG support Apple in preference to Android. Surely someone who buys an MG is unlikely to splash a thousand pounds on an iPhone when they can get the Android alternative for a few hundred pounds?
The car was designed primarily for the Chinese market which the majority of people use Apple iPhones as it's an aspirational device. Rumour has it that the unit inside the touch screen is actually an Android based device and there could be a chance that Android Auto will be coming in a later update.

A very well presented review. Chinese cars will surely come to rival Japanese and European brands in the same way that Koreans emerged as great car producers
E-PAS isn't necessary. Mechanical PAS is much preferred for much more direct positive feel through the steering wheel, and it's partly the reason why it would feel like a good drive around the twisties. Chain driven engines are now ubiquitous in many cars again as they are low maintenance compared to belt driven engines. Such a dumb comment. MG growing quickly from so few sales. No wonder they're 'growing fast.' Not very thought out points in this video. Do agree that this a decent car for the money.
not in Australia we also get the Automatic gearbox. I picked mine up last week in Scottish Silver it's a great car to drive very happy with it $12500 AUD I payed for it
There's a few things to consider with this review. Most of the "positive" points seems centred on the cosmetic stuff - the trim. RRP starts at £12,72 for which you can get a Fiesta with similar performance. The MG3 uses an old 1.5 engine, the Fiesta uses a modern 1.0 engine. Average MPG for the MG3 is 47.1, the Fiesta is 65.7 (and yes, it's petrol). NCAP rating for the MG3 is 3 star, and 5 star for the Fiesta. Then there's the depreciation which I expect will be higher for the MG3 as will other running costs such as parts and service. The MG3 is cheaper to insure but then, who'd nick it? It only makes sense if you really, really, really want the latest plate & don't care too much about refinement, build quality or safety.
The reviewer does emphasise how well this car drives and handles, saying it had better feedback than some GTi's he'd driven. He also mentions the 7 year warranty (Ford's standard warranty is 3 years.) The fully kitted MG3 Exclusive model is £12,795. The basic 5 door Fiesta Style 1.1 with 70PS is £14,615 increasing to £14,990 with parking sensors & electric rear windows added. (This still leaves it running on steel wheels.) The Fiesta 1.1 has combined mpg of 48.7, the MG3 has 47.1. The Fiesta 1.1 does 0-62 in 14.9 & a top speed of 99mph; the MG3 does 0-60 in 10.4 & a top speed of 108mph. To upgrade to the Zetec, you're looking at upwards of £16,500 with the 1.1 engine with 85PS.
@@stanleyleopard6799 All are reasonable points. As for the handling, mmm, I'm not convinced. The Fiesta I looked at was a 1.0 Ecoboost ST line (99 bhp) with similar 0-60 and it claims the 65.7 mpg. I have a feeling that you'd need that 7 year warranty! It comes down a balance between old technology in a brand new car against a modern car (a year old or so with low mileage). I reckon the Fiesta would be a better buy.
@@seamusoflatcap OK, but the 5 door ST Line starts at £18,085 so not really fair to compare. And I've seen several reviews on UA-cam that comment on the excellent 'hot hatch' handling of the MG3, while acknowledging that you have to rev the engine hard through the gears. (Something I'm used to doing on my XR2 Mk2!).
@@stanleyleopard6799 I Know I'm not comparing exactly like for like in that I'm not looking at a brand nee Fiesta to make the comparison, I'm looking at what else you can get for the cost of a brand new MG3. That's my starting point when buying a car. How much can I afford to spend & what's available for that budget. When I bought the current car it was because my Mondeo died suddenly and unexpectedly on me. Having to buy at short notice I was somewhat limited on budget & therefore choice. I ended up with a 1.2 13 plate Ka. I have been very pleasantly surprised. It's the smallest car I've ever owned and, yes, it lacks interior storage. The glove box is flimsy & only suited for children's mittens, the other "storage" bits have what looks like remnants of string vests to tuck things in (I'm sure the ad says cargo nets!). But. And it's a big but. It's nippy, surprisingly quick from a standstill, surprising one or two BMW drivers, gives mid 40's mpg (& I don't drive like the proverbial vicar), has a CD player, electric windows (it's 3 door), aircon, MP3 player adapter, and rear parking sensors. Came with 11k on the clock for 6 grand. As for the MG3, I stand by what I say regarding old v new technology & I wonder what the residual value will be in 3 year's time?
Superb review with the information I actually want to see. Car looks great too for someone like me who is a very low mileage driver. My current car is a simple car, no turbo, manual gear box, petrol and has lasted 5 years so far from new without a single fault and been 100% dependable. I like a car that performs well by brute force rather than some over-complicated engine which you can't rely on and can lead to huge bills. The long warranty means not such a big issue anyway but I guess the simplicity of the car is why the warranty is so long. Personally I'm more interested in the ZS as a potential purchase.
My girlfriends MG3 has recently started to what i can only describe as engine push when driving over about 40mph, if she eases off the acceleration the car will give a couple of pushes in power, them the ABS light pop's on, would appreciate any advice please if anyone has any ideas what's going on, cheers guys
The new Dacia Sandero that will probably arrive in may will wipe the floor with any competition in the budget segment. A high spec Sandero with automatic cvt transmission will be under 13000£, offer more space , better interior and larger touch screen console with wireless connectivity for both apple and Android auto. Just check dacia.co.uk on new Sandero! Great News!
My dad bought one of these in 2013, and what an utter heap of junk. 21k miles stretched a timing chain, 52k miles stretched another timing chain. 54k miles gear selector cables snapped after repeated previous visits back to MG due to gear change problems. Plus a few other issues like an expansion bottle. We bought another in 2017, 11k miles went back for a loud gearbox whine, gearbox full of swarf and replaced. 15k miles, got to a roundabout went to pull away and no drive. It actually fractured a hole through the gearbox. Car was then returned. Buyers beware! Stay clear!
Interesting that MG offer this in New Zealand as an automatic only and we drive on the same side of the road as the UK. so it’s not that. I have a feeling this choice is just down to the preferred option in each market.

It wouldnt surprise me if they put on a turbo charged and more refined engine ,before going into hot hatch territory, maybe raising the minimum price to £10500 and basically raising the price by £1000-1500 ,before having a £20,000 hot hatch
@@rivervalegroup Part assembly in the UK ceased in late 2016. The cars are now fully manufactured and assembled in China. However, design and engineering of MG cars is still undertaken at the Longbridge studio.
Correct, there is no autonomous braking or lane departure warning so it cannot achieve the 5 star rating. This model does not have many changes to the structure apart from the new tailgate so it is unlikely to be submitted for a new NCAP test as it's quite expensive, so I've heard. Here is the NCAP test for the previously car though this is the second facelift (known as the Euro face) because the original MG3 built for China had a totally different front bumper: www.euroncap.com/en/results/mg/3/7878 Cheers..

LOL.....You don't know how lucky you are.
I live in Canada. We don't have MSG on our roads.
I would love to get my hands on one of these...love the looks in and out...but I would want one with a more powerful engine.
Good review OSV.
G vS, MSG (Ajinomoto) would be Japanese rather than Chinese, so try again (rimshot)...
😂👍
The presenter is such a well dressed classy gentleman!
Is it British engineering brand still?
Well doesn’t the MG3 have variable valve timing-as written on the air intake??
Good review, but your facts are off the mark. That engine does have variable valve timing, and the engine has no relation to GM what so ever, your getting confused with the engine fitted in the GS that is in fact built in partnership with GM
I'm pretty sure it has multi point injection too

Very comprehensive and thorough review. Brilliant! The MG3 sure is value for money.
Thanks for the feedback Andrew 👍 seems to be a good offering at this price point.
I've owned an MG 6 for 3years from new. Superb diesel pulling power, if a little noisy. Never let me down. Only issue is an occasional warning light that pops up but resets when you restart the car. MG dealer in Maidstone aren't very good!
Great to hear feedback from an owner 👍 seems these cars get a lot of stick for their pricepoint
Pity it’s not made in the uk
Too right mate. MG motor have fucked up. There’s loads of MG3’s sitting in Longbridge and they promised the MG3 manufacturing would stay there. It’s just Chinese now. Nothing british about it.
We know why
Pity its not Electric.
Designed and engineered at Longbridge, Birmingham, England by British designers and engineers. To say there's nothing British about it is just wrong.
It's not designer or engineered there, either. It's a joke they sell these subpar Chinese cars as British.
I think if they really want people to consider buying an MG other than for its value, they should perhaps bring out a small, good looking convertible sports car that's electric.
Entertaining, comprehensive and professional review. Have to give MG credit to release at such a price.
Thanks for the feedback Geordi 👍
I thought Tiff Needell was reviewing it for a moment!
great car and for the price amazing just visited the new mg showroom in Marylebone (london) and had a good experience with the team there. would defiantly recommend especially with the current deals they have at the moment, its almost like driving away for free
That very nice sales team seen you coming didn't they hahahaha
Best presenter I have seen n a long time.
They decided not to offer it with a manual transmission in Australia. I couldn’t believe it when I read it was going to be automatic only - I’d never consider a small four cylinder with an automatic gearbox.
Best Car Reviewer I have seen in ages. Brilliant to be honest.
Thanks for the feedback Jeff 👍
@@rivervalegroup You are very welcome, keep up the brill work.
Will this launched on india
Cheers..
The 1.5 engine is an old GM unit that SAIC bought the rights to. SAIC have made improvements to it though.
Are you thinking of the SGE as this is the NSE which was designed by SMTC?
There is no mention here about the NSE engine being based on a GM design.
www.aronline.co.uk/news/mg-news/news-a-talk-and-a-tour-at-mg-birmingham/
SMTC are known to base their engines on other designs though, i.e. the 1.9 litre diesel engine for the MG6 was based on the design of a Kunming Yunnei Power engine
Cheers..
Anthony McGowan sorry Anthony, must try harder.
No GM input in the NSE engine.
I'd rather have a second hand iPhone than a new android phone 😂😂
@@AndySmallbone I would rather have a second hand android phone with a cracked screen than a new MG3.
Remember the good old days of like 2017 when you just plugged in the aux on whatever device you wanted

Was curious about these cars, and the MG brand as a whole. I went to the Horsham dealer the other day and I didn't even think twice. Once I'm back from my holiday, this car will be a Christmas present to myself. My 2nd car, replacing my little 1ltr 2006 Aygo Sport.

I test drove one 4 years ago. I am a driving instructor so need it to be good doing manoeuvres, so may give it a miss. I do like the 7 year warranty. I have a Škoda Citigo at the moment but it is almost 4 years old now and out of warranty. Thanks for the review.
thanks for the comment Iain 👍
A very well presented review. Chinese cars will surely come to rival Japanese and European brands in the same way that Koreans emerged as great car producers
What an excellent, clever, well thought out review. Look forward to more in a similar vein :)
No wonder they're 'growing fast.'
Not very thought out points in this video.
Do agree that this a decent car for the money.
With a stronger engine and suspension this would be a real contender here in Canada where we still love small cars with personality.
@Lock&Load 77 uhhhh is that supposed to be funny cuz i dont get it.
The MG6 wasn’t up to much?? The mark 1 MG6 TSE was a fantastic car-I owned one for 5 years and I’m still driving MG now
Hey there!, just to let you know we'll be reviewing the new MG ZS EV very soon! Ring that notification bell and keep an eye out!
not in Australia we also get the Automatic gearbox. I picked mine up last week in Scottish Silver it's a great car to drive very happy with it $12500 AUD I payed for it
That's an incredible price for a lot of car
Thanks ever so much indeed for uploading this, I have been waiting for it for around six months! It has been well worth the wait.
Thanks for waiting Lloyd👍 is the MG3 how you expected?
@@rivervalegroup I drove one last month, and the review basically sums it up pretty well. My wife has the pre-facelift model.
He also mentions the 7 year warranty (Ford's standard warranty is 3 years.)
The fully kitted MG3 Exclusive model is £12,795.
Seamus O'Flatcap you won't see anywhere near 65 MPG in the Fiesta
Is there also a LHD version?
Not one that we can supply I'm afraid.
interesting car. i really doubt you can really do 60 mpg with modern small turbo engines.
Best Car Reviewer I have seen in ages.
Thanks Gary 👍
Superb review with the information I actually want to see. Car looks great too for someone like me who is a very low mileage driver. My current car is a simple car, no turbo, manual gear box, petrol and has lasted 5 years so far from new without a single fault and been 100% dependable. I like a car that performs well by brute force rather than some over-complicated engine which you can't rely on and can lead to huge bills. The long warranty means not such a big issue anyway but I guess the simplicity of the car is why the warranty is so long. Personally I'm more interested in the ZS as a potential purchase.
Exterior door handles are a little old fashioned. Good review though.
Thanks for the feedback Car Dude 👍

🤣 haha glad you liked it
Opinion? (as I think you have reviewed both) MG3 or Dacia Sandero?
Stay clear!
SAIC should have offer the MG3 with it's Euro6 complient 1.0 Turbo petrol engine with manual or automatic transmission like in the ZS.
It's actually only available in auto and the 1.5 outsells it at least 3:1 so they deemed it unnecessary for the 3
Interesting that MG offer this in New Zealand as an automatic only and we drive on the same side of the road as the UK. so it’s not that.

The MG is still manufactured?
It is now made in China, transported to the UK and built here 👍
@@rivervalegroup Part assembly in the UK ceased in late 2016. The cars are now fully manufactured and assembled in China. However, design and engineering of MG cars is still undertaken at the Longbridge studio.
167% increased sales. What does this mean they sold 3 and a bit cars instead of 2?
MG sold 4,442 cars in the UK in 2017, increasing to 9,050 in 2018.
chris bradshaw don't give up the day job!
Why isn't the automatic available here in UK? The MG3 auto is available in other countries!
One thing that I'm curious is the safety rating on euro NCAP... 3 stars maybe?
Correct, there is no autonomous braking or lane departure warning so it cannot achieve the 5 star rating. This model does not have many changes to the structure apart from the new tailgate so it is unlikely to be submitted for a new NCAP test as it's quite expensive, so I've heard. Here is the NCAP test for the previously car though this is the second facelift (known as the Euro face) because the original MG3 built for China had a totally different front bumper: www.euroncap.com/en/results/mg/3/7878
