Rupert helps me so much! More I allow myself to be an open space and don´t resist, easier life gets. And happiness comes. I have a tendency to be addicted with food (especially sugar) since I was a kid. What also helps me is following a healthy diet and fasting. 48 hours fasting is a great remedy when I see I am starting to lose myself, which still happens when I do some travel and get out of my routine

To anyone needing/seeking help, please do as sometimes things are beyond our own scope. I've had an addiction from when i was 16 (I'm now 36). Got rid of it this year and found out it was from a childhood trauma which i didn't even realize!
I think in essence all addictions come from a point where we don't accept ourselves the way we are.
So please do seek professional help and don't throw your life away!

What kind of therapy is best for childhood trauma? I definitely have a lot of trauma from my childhood and it affects me deeply because I taught myself unconsciously to feel unloved, resent myself and feel unsafe. It is all self-protection. Now, as am adult I am trying to love myself, create safety in my body and face fear/anxiety/negativity with an open awareness and heart.
I am so happy to hear you got the help you always needed. Much love to you!

Listen to Rupert! Listen to Eckhart Tolle and read his books! Everyone has childhood trauma. You can address this by understanding who you are and who you are not!

    Pause, and get clarity first.
The desire to get to the root of this eating disorder (or food addiction), is greater than the desire to get relieve of the current discomfort. Face the feeling. Understand that what you're seeking is NOT the relieve of the particular feeling, but the peace and happiness that lies at the heart of all feelings.
Ask yourself: can I live with this feeling for the rest of my life?
Establish yourself as pure awareness that knows no resistance.
    🙏🙏

This is all very clear Rupert. However, what happens when, through our most established, trauma based habits, we get caught in that place where we ask ourselves the question, 'Can we (or even do we) want to stay with this painful, craving feeling forever' and find our most honest answer is 'NO'.
To be honest, I am worn out being 'brave' but subsequently feel ashamed of my lack of fortitude - cowardice if you like.
In certain areas of my life experience (I'm in my 60's and have been wrestling with this problem most of my life), I am still in the place as described in the bible (Roman's I think)... "for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the bad I do not want to do. Who/what will free me from this body of sin?"
Any ideas, or should I just throw in the towel? 🙏🤕

Allow the feeling. Stop the narrative, stop the story of the past, that’s just blame.
When humans voluntarily face what’s difficult we get stronger, that’s a fact. He’s right, you have to establish if you truly want change.

Spira suggests that any practice that helps to quiet the mind and cultivate a deeper awareness of our true nature as pure awareness, can be HELPFUL on the progressive path, such as meditation, mindfulness, and self-reflection.
However, he emphasizes that the ultimate realization, is not a result of any particular practice or effort, but rather a recognition of our already-existing nature. The concept of being a better person is based on the assumption that there is a separate individual self that can improve or change its qualities or behavior. The idea of a separate self is an illusion, and that our true nature is already perfect and whole. Therefore, he does not focus on self-improvement as a means to become a better person.
Instead, he emphasizes the importance of recognizing our true nature as pure awareness, and living from that understanding. The root cause of all suffering and discord in the world is the mis-identification with a separate self. Recognizing the true nature of our being, can lead to greater harmony and peace in our lives and in the world. 🙏🙏

@@saintx1000 Thank you for your considered reply. Of course I know the above intellectually, but until now the ‘embodied reality’ has somewhat waxed and waned. Thankfully, of late, the illusion is somewhat dissolving.

There’s no bad consequences to awareness. There’s no bad consequences to experiencing the feeling. Zero. None. It’s a paper tiger. A illusion. A thought. Your not relieving anything other than a thought. Think about it.

I really think this is outside the scope of a spiritual teacher's qualifications to give guidance on, as with anyone who has no background or training in eating disorders. I feel that a responsible teacher would really say they aren't qualified for this, and refer to professional help :(

    • @LDRester

In general, I agree. However, a good teacher should be able to recognize a student’s abilities to take on the instructions. Perhaps he has known this person for a while. So, these instructions would be fine. But, on first meeting, no. It all really depends on a person’s attachment to a “separate individual self”.

…. The answer is “will power” dear….(he is openly contradicting himself) and what you really want to do won’t help you(she knows), you don’t desire it enough….the discomfort dear sir is in her human body …. You know, the one we all have and you negate
      what f’ing nonsense.
My mother housed women with eating disorders for many years…. The answer in all cases was love from my mother and in the environment, which eventually allowed it self to turn inwards for these girls . Truama is healed in love. This is a recipe for self hatred… that she’s not desiring it enough . He is absolutely clueless and very dangerous.

I agree with you, that the eating disorder method given here by rupert, is not for everybody. Like most of the advaita teaching, it is suitable for those who are ready for it. And Rupert certainly knows that. Thus it is given in this context.
in fact, I believe the cure for the eating disorder will only be a side impact, it will just be the consequences, compare to the spiritual benefit for her.

I disagree. This is personally very helpful and practical for me. Often, Rupert will refer someone to a professional therapist and even advise that they do it before getting involved in non dual teachings. But in this case, I believe it to be appropriate.

She’s probably had professional help her whole life. This may be her attempt at trying something else, loving herself enough to face the discomfort. Additionally, she is an adult asking another adult for advice. Whether she chooses to follow it is up to her. Rupert teaches us how powerful we actually are.

    Are there degrees of awareness?

    • @saintx1000
      @saintx1000  Рік тому +5

From the perspective of separate-self, from the perspective of progressive path, you may say there are practices to achieve higher degree of awareness. Awareness is then seen as an attribute of the separate-self.
However, according to Rupert Spira, from advaita / non-dual perspective, awareness is the fundamental and essential nature of all experience. Awareness is not a quality or attribute of consciousness, but rather the very essence or substance of consciousness itself. In his teachings, awareness is described as a limitless and unbounded presence that is always present, even in the absence of any particular object or experience.
Spira emphasizes that awareness is not a personal or individual attribute, but rather a universal and impersonal reality that is shared by all beings. Recognizing the true nature of awareness is the key to realizing our essential nature as pure, infinite consciousness.
It is an all-pervading, infinite presence that is always present and never changes, and is not subject to degrees or levels. Spira emphasizes that all experiences, including those of different states of consciousness or levels of awareness, are simply movements of awareness, and that the true nature of awareness is always the same. The idea of degrees of awareness is a misconception that arises from the mind's tendency to categorize and compare experiences, rather than a reflection of the reality of awareness itself.
However, he does acknowledge that the clarity and intensity of our experience of awareness can vary depending on the degree of attention and focus we give to it, but this is not a change in the nature of awareness itself.🙏🙏

Heard the old joke about how many psychiatrists it takes to change a light bulb ?????? Answer: Only one, but the light bulb must really want to change. Sorry about the humor. But if that's the best that can be done . . . it's rather pathetic. Life has challenges. And the bible tells us challenges, offenses, sins are unavoidable. But we are commanded to " deal with " them. God told Cain *Sin is at the door. And its desire is for you. BUT YOU MUST MASTER IT.* . . . How ??????? Clint Eastwood tells us *ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN (1980).* hahahahaha. Thanks for the opportunity to comment on the human condition. Of course " getting clarity " is essential. But just you TRY and get it. In my case the desire for chocolate is greater than my desire for " clarity. " In the Twilight Zone The Man In The Bottle tells Mr. Castle . . . *YOU MUST BE PREPARED FOR THE CONSEQUENCES NO MATTER WHAT YOU WISH FOR.* hahahahahahaha . . . No tricks.

    • @saintx1000
      @saintx1000  Рік тому +8

      Yes, you are right.
However still many people are not ready for the consequences. I don't want what is present, I want what is not present.
In this approach, Rupert says, is to stay as the openness. No fight involved. Not intellectually, but to establish in experience. Test yourself: am I truly truly open to this feeling, or am i subtly practicing welcoming in order to get rid of the feeling?
Only the ego would fight. Awareness has no resistance.
