What Is the Difference between Myself and My Mind?

  • In this video, we examine the question: What is the difference between myself and my mind? A woman says she finds it hard not to identify with thoughts during meditation. She wants to know how she can separate herself from her thinking in order to stand as the witnessing or knowing presence of awareness.
Rupert says you cannot separate yourself from any experience. You witness thinking or hearing or seeing, but not from a distance. You witness thinking in the sense that you are aware of thinking, but the you that is aware of thinking is not separate from the thinking.
Identification means to feel that what you essentially are is thinking, but you are obviously not identical to or the same as thinking, because in between two thoughts, there is no thinking but you remain.
At the very early stage in the investigation, we do take this step and separate out the witnessed from the witness, the known from the knower. But here we don't stop there it was just a pedagogical tool that we used for one who is lost in experience.
What you need to be sure about is that what you essentially are is not limited to or conditioned by thinking, or indeed feeling sensing or perceiving, in other words, what you essentially are, pure knowing is unconditioned and therefore unlimited.

@SIMPLY HUMAN I wouldn't say it's a "bad analogy" so much as a partially true analogy (as Rupert mentions it being a "stage" but not the complete picture. Ultimately speaking there can be no concepts or words that can describe reality as it actually is because concepts and words are isolated or "localized" secondary representations dependent upon a "dualistic" (subject v object) experience or view of the world.
He mentions in this video that the "screen" analogy is helpful as a means or intermediate step and at this point I would agree.
I believe that there are many people walking around who have plenty of thoughts (movies) running through their brain but have not (or have long forgotten to) notice that they have awareness ( a screen) going on as well.
It helps IMO because in 'not noticing that you notice' (ie, in not recognizing the distinction between concept and awareness) one can go on and on existing unquestioningly, caught in an dualistic orbital pattern of ruminating thoughts.
I would agree with Rupert that "fully waking up" is probably for most of us a case of stages - one of which might be favoring awareness (Atman) over thought (Ego) for a time.

    • @davidmickles5012

@SIMPLY HUMAN I would say "focused" is part of it in terms of a sound methodology of approach (that "stages" thing again) but the other side of the equation is insight, noticing, realizing, becoming "aware of.."
I'm not sure that a "kaboom!" moment is necessary to "waking up" with fireworks or bells & whistles etc.., but I believe breakthroughs happen and then the focusing may become easier.

Re: The "idea" that there is no self..
For those who would attempt to deny the self via the "idea" that there is "no self" there is a simple yet important "antidote" for that sickness in the form of self inquiry...
      • If the self is "only an illusion" then who/what is it that is having this illusion?
      • If you or "me" are just a dream then who is it that is dreaming this dream?
      • As for the notion of "no self" If not the self, then who is here to realize there is "no self?"
If awakening is merely "awakening from the illusion of self" then who is it that awakens from this if not the self?
In truth it can NOT possibly be that the self could be ever negated because it is in fact the ONLY "experientially real" thing there is.
The "ego" on the other hand....

I can completely relate to this ladies issue, I feel her question is not landing with Rupert effectively. I think her question relates to the fact that she can quite easily see she is not the producer of sounds, feelings etc.. but with thought she has a much harder time. She feels very strongly she is the thinker of thoughts. This is a little different to how Rupert interpreted it.. that she is not identical to her thoughts, which obviously she is not. But that doesn't mean she can't be the thinker of them.

It's easy to get lost in these concepts, and when the perceived identity gets hold of them it neuters the message and becomes another means to escape or fix, but self can't get out of self.
So a more natural relaxation is needed without concepts, and seeing thoughts lose their meaning as they drift away and you're left with a stillness. In that void, a loving prayer of praise and devotion from the heart through Psalms helps to sustain that vibration throughout the day.

We do not have conscious memories of life until we had developed a few years and experienced enough brain wiring to even recall our experiences. Then we live life through those perceptions, memories and their attached emotions. We become what we are not aware of, then when we become aware of that, we seek to extract ourselves. We may emerge from cosmos and have a mental life. But we experience the mental life. Physical life is driven by mental experience.

" People come to me and they ask, “How to attain a peaceful mind?” I say to them, “There exists nothing like that: peaceful mind. Never heard of it.”
Mind is never peaceful; no-mind is peace. Mind itself can never be peaceful, silent. The very nature of the mind is to be tense, to be in confusion. Mind can never be clear, it cannot have clarity, because mind is by nature confusion, cloudiness. Clarity is possible without mind, peace is possible without mind; silence is possible without mind, so never try to attain a silent mind. If you do, from the very beginning you are moving in an impossible dimension.

Remember always that whatsoever is happening around you is rooted in the mind. Mind is always the cause. It is the projector, and outside there are only screens - you project yourself. If you feel it is ugly then change the mind. If you feel whatsoever comes from the mind is hellish and nightmarish, then drop the mind. Work with the mind, don’t work with the screen; don’t go on painting it and changing it. Work with the mind.

But there is one problem, because you think you are the mind. So how can you drop it? So you feel you can drop everything, change everything, repaint, redecorate, rearrange, but how can you drop yourself. That is the root of all trouble.

You are not the mind, you are beyond mind. You have become identified, that’s true, but you are not the mind.

And this is the purpose of meditation: to give you small glimpses that you are not the mind. If even for a few moments the mind stops, you are still there! On the contrary, you are more, overflowing with being. When the mind stops it is as if a drainage which was continuously draining you has stopped. Suddenly you are overflowing with energy. You feel more!

If even for a single moment you become aware that the mind is not there but “I am,” you have reached a deep core of truth. Then it will be easy to drop the mind. You are not the mind, otherwise how can you drop yourself? The identification has to be dropped first, then the mind can be dropped."

I like your comment but have to disagree with the first paragraph. We can never get rid of the mind nor should we. Being rid of the mind would be to fall to the consciousness of an animal. Nothing wrong with an animal but that’s not for us.
But dis-identifying from the mind and introducing presence in our lives returns the mind to its role of a useful tool rather than an apparent evil entity trying to take us over.

  • @Robinson8491

There is distance between hearing and seeing and the self because you don't think about seeing and hearing (but you could), so from that view thinking could be seen as the center or the self. And sight and hearing as distant. But in reality thinking is only nearer to the self, but not the self. It is just very seldom that you can experience this distance. So it is very natural to identify with thinking; however it is not the self. For there can be awareness without thought, therefor also thought cannot be the center of the self
This is all assuming naive realism as Putnam called it isn't true: that it isn't just the qualia (of seeing, hearing an thinking) itself that are the awareness
I think this womans main complaint is that she overthinks, and she should focus on emptying her mind. Not attach to the value of thought so much. Let go. Become empty. It is bliss, and you can become pleasant

Analysis is still in the conceptual level, just the mind trying to learn. Understanding occurs at some degree, but it is not that which brings deep realisation. Even if you understand intellectually all the teachings you still don't have any real, first hand, insights. It can become a belief system and that's it. Just different content of thoughts.
It's good to understand deeper, but don't cling to the need of understanding.
If one is sincere understanding will come anyway.

If you really want to go down a rabbit hole, explore the development of language and our ability to read. Goes directly to the concept of time. Because while reading for example, the mind simply goes to town, picking up clues as to where so called words predictably will go, filling in the blanks in microscopic bits of information, making decisions without the conscious mind being involved, I think it must be acknowledged that as manifestations we are as complex as the most intricate, beautiful and fabulous machinery imaginable.

What is mind ? It's easier to describe if we compare it to a computer. Mind is the information that is stored in the brain, or data. Because we are a "biological computer", information is constantly being linked to one another and these are our thoughts
The computer slows down when many files are stored on it, as a remedy we have defragmentation, which ensures that the hard disk is in order again. For us, it is meditation that brings our thoughts back into order

To me, thinking is a tool that awareness uses to figure out what its doing. In order for thought to try to understand itself, thought automatically wants to separate from it in order to study it. But this would be like the mirror's reflection trying to understand why it is projected in reverse of the person it's reflecting. I hear people say "when I leave this world I"ll finally understand what this was all about. But really, this is not going to be important to the essential Self that leaves this confused body. 😊

You don't really even have to go that far. You can dissect thought from a sociological and Jungian point of view. Thoughts are fed to us today like candy. An advert makes us think we want a new car, a new car makes us think we want a new job. A news broadcast makes us think we want change in the world. You'd be hard pressed to find a thought that wasn't actually caused by some kind of external stimulus. Someone behaves rudely to us we think we don't like that person. It has very little to do with 'our self'.

6.25 minutes - this pedagogy is the classic method in Advaita Vedanta - the 2 step process of Adhyaropa - Apavada.
Adhyaropa = an exercise in discerning between what is I and what is not I. It leads to the discernment of what is actually meant by I. In daily life we make the error of identifying what belongs to me as me. This enquiry leads to the discernment of I, The Subject. It is a drill down into subtler parts of I and get past each. If you think you have grasped I, see if it can be called "this". If it can be called "this", then it is an object, not The Subject I. Advaita Vedanta aphorism - "This is not I". Or maybe see if the I is non agent. If there is a sense of agency, then it is not I. That is why I is called the witness, due to its non agency. But perhaps the first is easier and yields to simple logic. At this point, Advaitam / non dualism is not achieved, because you have only removed the error of what we have been thinking of as I, and identified The Real Subject, clarified it from the error of what we thought of as subject, which are what the Subject experiences, the Objects, universe. If you stop here, it almost would be one kind of Dvaitam / dualism - perhaps the Sankhya Philosophy. .
Apavada - this is the merging back of all the Objects back into the Subject in the realisation that none of the objects are separate from The Subject I. Here also logic plays its part, but there is also a direct, obvious, pointing out. One that makes you ask, "why didn't I think of that? " "It was right there in front of me all the time, all it took was a pointing out". The classic example in Advaita is gold and jewelry like rings, bracelets, ear drops etc. There is only gold, gold only appears in different forms as names and forms of jewelry, not separate from gold, . There is only One Absolute, That only appears in different forms as names and forms of the universe, not separate from That. .
But stage 1 is a necessary qualification to go to stage 2. Attempting stage 2 without discernment of stage 1 can become hallucinatory. Stopping at stage 1 is not even half qualification, it can also become dualism.

Bottom line is you can not witness thoughts. It's just an idea that you can. Anybody who says they actually 'witness' thought is not seeing as it is. What you CAN do is suddenly stop thinking - and in that moment it can APPEAR as if you've just 'witnessed' that thought. But you didn't. It just ended. Like this one. People get lost trying to witness thoughts. Like he said there are Ashrams devoted to this sort of thing. But it's impossible. But heck it's a free country (just) - so do as you will.

This is so helpful. For me it seems sounds feelings and thoughts come and go. The difference with thoughts is that they have the ability to somehow grab hold of you and seconds / minutes later, you realise( if you realise at all during daily activity) your consciousness had been hijacked to focus on something you did not choose to focus on, running on on its own. It’s like waking up from a dream when you do realise it which is more likely to happen in a meditation session. I guess we want to know if this is the known nature of thought interaction/ behaviour? Or is this a sign of mental cognitive decline. Especially as we age. Am I losing my mind? There seems to be for me anyway, a gentle acknowledgment of sounds and feelings but with thoughts they seem intrusive, interrupting. Why are they there? I’m not talking about mental capacity to deal with daily activities but things that pop up out of the blue and hijack consciousness. Often. Seemingly all the time. Seems like sounds and feelings are part of me but in the experiencing of the thought ( which is retrospective) I am the thought and do not have the ability to watch it unfold because when I realise it’s happening I no longer have the thought. Does this make sense to anyone? 🙏

A good chunk of them come from media programming that has latched itself onto the etheric brain, or entities feeding off your system, injecting their own thoughts or manipulating your mind to suit their agenda or sway your behavior.
A good rule of thumb is to avoid all forms of media like the plague. Especially television, movies, mainstream news etc. Then after some time and effort your mind will clear up. A few educational videos or meditative vids like this however are okay.
Entities however take a little more effort to dislodge. You need first the awareness of them. Then the capacity to hold your boundaries. Then the energetic will to push or shove to get them off of you. This takes some practice.
Awareness is always the foundation though. Good luck Beverly :)

Let us say brain is information system. What goes in, that is in. What you see, what you hear, what you watch, what you listen to. And what is in wants to stay, to reproduce and or to get out. "Monkey see, monkey do."
What helps is conscious consumption. Take care of your mind. Don't take in excessive drama, violence or anything you don't wish to have in your life. Focus, even in media, on what you want.

Thinking is actually a creation of consciousness itself. Not all thoughts are just happening so that you hopelessly observe them with no control over them. Through conscious intension you can actually willfully think and produce thoughts. This is what we all experience. There are involuntary thoughts sure, but there are also voluntary ones too. This is clearly being produced by consciousness. I mean how else does one intentionally think without consciousness? That would just be information processing with no awareness. A thought to be a thought needs conscious intention. There are no thoughts without consciousness so the idea that we're just hopelessly observing is experientially wrong. Your consciousness thinks in the same way flowers give off a fragrance. Of course I can see why one would argue we're just observing because it does away with any personal responsibility. If my thoughts and actions are just happening and it's not me doing them than I have no control over them and all I can do is hopelessly observe. This actually undermines consciousness because all it can do is observe, but has no other practical or creative abilities.

    • @brianlittrell797
      @brianlittrell797 Рік тому

@@monsterhuntervideos4446 My understanding is that thoughts come from different levels of awareness/consciousness. The highest level of awareness or consciousness is obviously The Source of all life - you can call it God or The One Infinite Creator or whatever. Then it steps down to lower levels of awareness called souls/spirits or individuations. There are thoughts produced by the subconscious mind, the conscious mind, the superconscious mind (which is the mind of your soul/higher self/divine self), and the highest level of mind is the supraconscious mind. The supraconscious mind is beyond even the soul and is the mind of the Big Self or Non-Local Self. It is where one's consciousness is One with God and the highest level of manifestations and miracles occur. At the level of the superconscious or soul level and the supraconscious or God-level there is perfect harmony and perfect wisdom and perfect love at work in every thought, word and action. In fact at that level thoughts are so powerful that they are at the level of actions and entire planets, solar systems, universes can perhaps be created. It depends on the level of evolution of the being. So yes Pure Awareness or Pure Consciousness can use it's Higher Mind to consciously, with total awareness, very deliberately and intentionally choose thoughts that are creative, inspired, beautiful, breathtaking. Rather than unconscious automatic thinking of the subconscious mind which is usually based in separation and negativity and misperceptions and the ego identifies with such thoughts etc. As we become more aware we come from the super and the supra minds. Rather than the sub/ego minds. Then there is the spiritual heart center which is part of the soul/spirit and called the seat of divinity from which the peace, love and joy are felt/experienced and expressed. So the spiritual mind/higher mind and spiritual heart center work together.

@SIMPLY HUMAN I entirely disagree. There is a self and its self evident; a properly basic belief. Consciousness is part of what it means to be a self. What would it take for you to believe there were a self other than consciousness? Does a self have to be unconscious to be a self? If a self were to be real in your view what would the criteria be to convince you? Nothing would convince you I guess if your starting position is that there is no you. I see everything Rupert teaches as false teaching and I see him as kind of a false prophet. We have a real self even if we don't know exactly what it is in perfect detail and exactly how to explain it, but we directly experience ourselves as selves. Only God knows what you as a real person truly is in perfect knowledge because he created us. We just get to enjoy being a person with the limited knowledge we have. We cannot map out by thinking what our self is; we can only just be a self and learn to enjoy and appreciate it.

@SIMPLY HUMAN The evidence is actually against you because belief in a self is a properly basic belief, whereas belief in no self is very far from being properly basic. Ask most people whether they think they are a self, and through their own intuition, conscience and very sense of self they will mostly tell you they are a self. That belief is based on their experience and observation of being 100% a self. There is no scientific evidence whatsoever that we are not a self. None. That is blind belief, not properly basic belief. There's reasonable belief then there's One Flew over the Cuckoo's nest. And remember if you disagree with me you really don't because there is no you according to you. It's just your ego disagreeing; no real thinking self who has anything capacity to arrive at truth because you have no self to willfully think. Your thoughts are just happening and you are just observing then right?

The atom is forever empty space. The atoms in the so-called "brain" are also empty space. It is all composed of impersonal belief arising from the one belief in subject/object. All there is to "place" is the impersonal belief in subject/object. Nothing "personal" exists, so there is no mind/body organism. That is nothing other than impersonal data. This entire appearance is the impersonal virtual reality claiming to be countless entities, things, conditions, etc. The narrative has no one and thing in it. It is all just data.
