- Snap-Rings, Circlips, C-Clips, Retaining Rings - a lot of terms for a simple fastener - and in most cases used to describe the same thing! In general, a circlip is a c-shaped piece of metal, designed to flex slightly to allow it to fit in a groove, either on the inside of a cylinder or bore, or on the outside of a shaft, thereby holding a bearing in place. If the bearing fails or needs maintenance, removing the circlip allows access to it. Typically, the ends of the circlip will have very small holes or “ears”. The tips of circlip pliers fit in these ears, and squeezing the pliers compresses or expands it enough to remove it from the groove. Here’s where the fun starts, however.
A simple search of kctool’s website for circlip yields over 200 entries! So what gives? What are the differences?

What’s the best way to determine the size pliers needed for an outside snap ring? What area should I measure on the snap ring?
