How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.
Was that a rock and roll solo on that mandolin? Just awesome -- bending strings and all. Like Bloomfield. I saw them live. I have never been in the presence of such an intense musical mind meld. Lisa Marie Bates is a Force. Her hamonies, her fiddle, her mandolin, her guitar, her clogging. Amy Lou Keeler is a Rock. Around which everything revolves. Mama's Broke mashes up about four different genres of music, puts them into their own blender, and brings forth a music quality I've not heard before -- ethereal, astonishing, primal. We need a new musical genre -- maybe "Primitive Nova Scotia Soul"? I can't stop listening ....
To me, that was an astonishing 15 minutes! I was being surprised and moved again and again; astonishing musicianship, precision, and energy. This is top tier stuff, and I can just marvel.
Never heard of Mamas Broke before. I love this type of music! Loved the 2nd song's fiddlesticks and the heel pounding. I heard a duo from France many yrs ago that incorporated this sound and I listened to the record all day long. Mamas Broke is a treasure. NPR, you're still #1 at picking the best around! What a pleasure to wake up to.👏👏👏👏
I have moved my tastes in music over the years as a kid I loved folk music I just didn't know that's what it was called. I went to metal as teenager and a young man but now I'm back to what I love and now I know what it's called. These ladies are great so good
Thanks NPR! I'd never heard of Mama's Broke, and I'm so grateful for this as an introduction. My god the talent and passion these two have. They're simply badass!
You have a new fan. Love your music Amy and Lisa, I've waited many years to hear a new female folk duo from Canada. Kate and Anna were great you are too. Thanks Mama's Broke.😀
Wonderful combination of vocals/harmonies. That instrumental work also quite amazing. The more I watch, the more I'm into it. What an impressive duo. The violin + tapdancing for beat had me.
I loved this. Loved the instrumentation especially. That looks like the best violin form/ergonomics I’ve ever seen, but I don’t know anything at all about violin.
This is a very special duo. I had the pleasure of seeing them live at the Front Porch in Charlottesville, VA a couple of months ago and I was blown away as I'd never heard of them. They were inspiring and musically magical. I bought their first CD and have been loving it more and more every listen.
I saw them recently and they were so mind meltingly good that I convinced my friends to drive the hour or so to their next stop. So so so good live. They've got what Federico Garcia Lorca called "Duende." Ellas tienen Duende!!!
Thank you NPR for introducing me to Mama's Broke; the Tiny Desk series is yet another reason why I am a sustaining member of my local NPR station (WKSU).
Just saw them live in San Francisco. They killed it, just profoundly good musicians and artists. Everythying was so cohesive and tight and soulful and running out of adjectives.
We have seen them perform twice in Iowa now (thanks for stopping by TWICE!) and just as blown away the second time. So much talent and sound from two people and absolutely moving music that you can really feel. Incredible. Tell everyone you know to see them live!
I’m a personal friend with Chad Fontaine RIP and I’m also a good friend of Lisa in Mama’s broke, the Canadian dirty kids, lots of talent on this scene unfortunately a lots of them die at Younger age, mama’s broke are on the good track tho sober girl full of talents ❤

This duo has been playing music for years, toured many countries and put out 2 amazing albums. How have I never heard them on Canadian public radio??!

Hello, I totally agree. May I ask how the French duo you were referring is called?
⬆️ not a duo obviously but he might be one of them
@@farmersimonk who?
@@TtallouS Well to be fair it could be a few dozen different bands he's referring too, the folk scene is huge here !
I have a question: how does one sing with a violin pushing against one's throat, exactly? 😳
I haven't seen these two play in years, but every show was a an absolute pleasure.
Awesome that it's been released on Women's Day, huge congrats!
