@@JonBardcore SoT means/meant a lot to some competitive players. It took rare years to make the game as casual friendly as possible by lowering the skill ceiling/trying to kill this part of their community. Over those years a lot of people spent hundreds if not thousands of hours in the game. It's not that easy to completely ignore something that had such an impact on you for that long. Some of the people who sound negative in comments like Bee here just want to see the game doing better.

I literally played for the first time in 9 months last week. I got 95k on my 1 man sloop after 2 hrs of not seeing anyone, suddenly got chased by a blood thristy trio when near port, dumped my loot in my dingy, swung around the island breaking line of sight, and took off on my dingy in the opposite direction with all my loot as i watched the trio chase my empty ship to the horizon and beyond.

Something that's always important to keep in mind is that the peak concurrent player count for any given day or month only shows how many people are online at the SAME TIME. It doesn't show how many INDIVIDUALS come online at any point throughout a day or month. There are plenty of people who don't play every day, and people don't all log on at the same time. All game companies keep track of the total individuals who log on at least once during a day/week/month, and those numbers are far more indicative of a game's population than the concurrent player count. That 400,000 number seems realistic to me as the number of individuals logging on at least once per month, and that's DEFINITELY not a dead game!

    • @KarlSmith
      @KarlSmith 10 місяців тому +1

Yupppp, "concurrents" always trips people up. That 386K actives number is almost certainly *just* based on Steam - it's pretty easy to extrapolate 14K peak concurrents out to 200-400K monthly uniques. Devs have regularly said it gets "millions" of MAUs. So at least over 1M but in the past on big releases (like Disney Pirates) it hit nearly 5M uniques!

While the game definitely isn't dead, and dying is probably too strong a word, you can see player numbers dropping over time. Season 10 had one of the lowest player counts on an update day of all time, which is not a good thing to see for the game's health. Steam charts is not an accurate representation of the exact number of people playing, but it's a good indicator of how many people are playing compared to previous points in time.

He nails the key takeaway: Sea of Thieves is not a competitive PvP game. It's also not marketed as such. So, holding SoT to standards Rare's not even trying to reach is asking for disappointment. It's no wonder a crowd of these folks echo themselves into these arguments of "dead game."

    • @le_big_monke543
      @le_big_monke543 10 місяців тому +9

Well, actually it WAS marketed as a pvp game for majority of its launch. Pvp content was consistently promoted in sot trailers for a long while until around when the Pirates life tall tale series was released and they roped in a whole bunch of new players. Because of this massive increase due to a story release, their entire focus shifted from pirate game based on combat and player interaction, to pirate game based on short story missions and pve grinding.

    • @ElroyTheTwost

@le_big_monke543 notice how he said COMPETITIVE PvP game? It was marketed as a pirate game that had pirate elements such as yknow stealing shit. But a hard-core PvP experience was never what rare offered with the game. At the end of the day it's a sandbox game with optional PvP and because it's a sandbox some people will love the PvP and some will hate it. For a very long time PvP elements were added to the game with each update. I agree a new ship or type of cannonball/weapon would be cool but at the end of the day it's rares game and they want to tell a naritive and that's what they are focusing on. And like it or not alot of people are excited for that narrative and more PvE stuff to do.

I have 1500 hours in the game, after a 2 month break (with sporadic play prior to that), a week into season 9 and I called it quits. Haven’t played since but still love what SoT could be. I just don’t think Rare are actually dedicated to making SoT the best version of itself it can be. We’ve all seen their priorities over the years, the fact that it took 5 and a half years to even work on hit reg, only for it to come out worse than before, speaks volumes (just one example in a long list of many). But as long as we have “new” recolored cosmetics in the store, we’re in it to win it, baby! Amirite?! 😒
Watching streamers cruise around for 2 hours and only encounter one boat, then sink that boat in 14 seconds (while getting hit regged out of their minds, then insert salt mine from brand new pirates who don’t understand the game yet), then back to server hopping for 1-3 hours, rinse repeat, also speaks volumes. Take all that for what you will.

(They’re claiming that shooting a pirate and that shot hitting, but not registering, ISN’T a hit registration issue, which it is by definition for those keeping track, it’s actually a “server stability issue” because “they said so”, it DEFINITELY CAN’T be the thing they claimed they fixed but turns out it’s not actually fixed but they can’t admit that because holy shit if they did, so they shuck the blame onto some other broken feature, since they have a laundry list to choose from. It DEFINITELY can’t be that, huh-uh, no way! If they actually had 2400 hours in the game they’d be FULLY aware of the insane amount of time Rare has “said” something then went completely the opposite direction or have been caught dead to rights lying: “we will never bring back hard earned time limited cosmetics, as that would ruin their value and achievement” *brings back time limited cosmetics right after, then continues doing so, claiming they never said that*, just one example in another long list)
Edit: also hard to “spark interest” when the only thing I wanna do in this game is fight other pirates and my two options are: sit underwater in a queue or 15 minutes, sink a some brand new guy who accidentally voted on hourglass within 5, rinse repeat, OR I can sail around for a couple hours in a dead game looking for someone else to shoot a cannonball at. There’s a reason I quit a week into season 9, literally couldn’t find people to play against and got bored af doin uncontested fofs. And looking at season 10, it’s the exact same except empty fotds instead of fofs. VERY exciting gameplay.
Edit 2: peoples’ biggest complaint about the new siren song event? Not enough people contesting it and they’re bored af. Go figure. 🙄

People got tired of getting kicked out during battles or them never starting in the first place, so they quit trying to play. I was in the lobby and it was full to the brim and the match would not start, then we would get kicked and have to start the wait again. I was there. Player interest declined because Rare forced it to. The lie needs to stop that we, the Arena Players made it stop with lack of interest. Rare did not want the mode to continue, so they started breaking it and we gave up trying to play their broken (on purpose) mechanic.

    2. it's not because a game isn't competitive that it doesn't need fixing. The state of pvp has always been bad since 2019.
    3. Rare is just lucky that they don't have major competition. They are lucky that they have a game that fills a certain niche because if they would have any competition they would die in a second seeing all the bugs still remaining in the game.

  • @Robogames05

This is - in my eyes - the first bad video of yours I've seen.
So first your player number calculations you keep saying OH would they do this would they do that if there are only 30k players. Nobody is saying that there is only 30k active players. There is 30k players at every hour of the day. Lets say the average session length is 2 hours, this is including some folks only playing on weekends and so on. Now we get 360k active players, much closer to the number from your weird website and very realistic that the devs would say hey 360k players lets keep making content for them, lets make a treasure hunt for them and so on.
You believe that every player that plays and or likes PvP is a competitive player? Random Timmy diving for HG because he wants that ghost curse is a competitive player? The vast majority of the PvPvE playerbase and even the mostly pure PvP playerbase is not competitive and most certainly not "hardcore competitive". Of course you do not need to be a NAL player to be competitive, but like right now the actual competitive playerbase is found in like League of Thieves and not broadly in hourglass.
Now the official PVP event. At this point you are just on purpose cherry picking facts to fit with your narrative here: Yes the event you point to has almost no vod views. But what about all the other last ship standings we can see in that screenshot. They have plenty of views, thousands, a few less than the non pure PvP stuff sure but not significantly less. The one you point at is quite an outlier there. And if that page is meant to be sorted chronologically the event you point at isn't even the last "Last Ship Standing" that happened. But even if it is the last of those events what are supposed to believe that the playerbase over night lost interest in watching PvP leading to this steep af decline from 7k views to like 100?
And you just like don't address any of the legitimate concerns that people have. I personally don't even think the game is dying, but if someone who believes so points at clear evidence of what absolutely undeniably looks like the game sailing off into maintenance mode, the game being in a terrible state performance wise and so on then yea I get why people may think the game is dying.
Additionally to suggest that Skull & Bones may fill any sort of void here is ludicrous at best - the games are nothing alike really apart from youknow pirates being a thing. Sure the playerbases will have some overlap, but I have seen a lot more people that wanted to and have indeed quit Sea of Thieves for The Finals than people voicing any sort of eagerness to leave SoT for Skull & Bones. Much more realistic for your "hardcore competitive" players to leave SoT for a shooter, 1st or 3rd person, than for them to go over to Skull & Bones.
I am sorry if this comment comes off as rude, I usually quite enjoy your videos, but this one disappointed me.

  • @lordraven1991
    @lordraven1991 10 місяців тому +1

Oh my Gods above, are people finally starting to realize that SoT has always been a PVE game that just allows PVP to happen? Has the wool been ripped from their eyes for the first time when the much-requested PVP voyage came, and nobody was taking part in it? Another PVP supportive UA-camr just released a video about how a week after the new voyage she can just do the voyage back-to-back without being attacked once. And if she joins into a voyage already going on, the crew doing it either dumps the loot or just logs out.
People are sick and tired of being attacked by people that don't do anything else in their life but play SoT constantly. They have been sick and tired of it, and the numbers reflect this. The valleys in the player count on the chart are the points after a sale happens for SoT and all those new players get pushed away by the number of people we see remaining in the lowest count. Those "bottom of the barrel" numbers from each dip are the long-term players and the hardcore PVP supporters. These are the constant players that are the SoT community, the higher numbers that everyone wants to keep putting neon signs pointing to are just temporary players that don't stick around for very long. Getting attacked all the time, never being able to progress due to constant attacks, never being able to do anything because they just don't have enough time to sit around an area long enough to get quest done, all of these factors make them quit playing. Sometimes for good. And as the graph shows, that "bottom of the barrel" number is going down too.
Rare is sick of the lower number of players forcing their higher numbers to plummet too. That's why we are getting safer seas in the first place. Finally, players can get the game or hopefully return to the game for the first time and do what they want. Simply, play the game. No longer will we have to keep an eye on the horizon for other players approaching, finally we can spend an hour figuring out a puzzle, FINALLY we can actually keep all the loot we gather. And as I have said to all the doubters out there calling out the 70% reduction of value in SS, 30% of anything sold is still 100% more than everything stolen from me in HS. I don't do PVP in SoT, I don't want to do PVP in SoT, I don't care to do PVP in SoT, I hate PVP in SoT, I wouldn't cry if they disabled PVP in SoT. So, when I bring a chest on board my ship, I do want to be able to keep it there and to eventually sell it for gold and XP. And if the only way for that to happen is to waste 90% of my very little free time to play a game fighting for my life just to progress less than 1% in just 1% of the total progression within the game, I'd just rather not play the game at all. Or at the very least stop playing it at the time when I see someone approaching because I know that in this game, someone come straight at you isn't doing so to be friends.
The game is "dying" because what it was is slowing being chocked out. Rare is finally removing players ability to exploit in anyway, they are adding a whole new playstyle to the game to finally allow players to just play the game for once. And for the first time, they care more for the longevity of the game rather than the crybaby ego maniacs that have been ruining their game from the day it launched.
Hardcore PVP Twitch streamers and UA-camrs are having to start innocently picking on other players rather than going all out to fight them just to be able to make any content at all now. They can't just PVP any longer because everyone either runs away, logs off, or is another PVPer that is just as good or better than them, and who wants to watch a 2-3 hour stream of two boats sailing in circles unable to sink each other, and gaining nothing as a reward should one be able to sink the other in the end. Because PVPer's don't have any loot to begin with, they don't pick any up that just spawns in the world, they don't do any quest to get any of their own loot, they just spend an hour gathering supplies so they can then destroy all the other players that have been questing for that hour for their loot. But they can't do that anymore can they? Everyone just gives up and gets off the game now because they are done with it all. They are tired of being used as an ego boost for people that know that's the only thing they have going for them in life. That they can click buttons better than other people.
So no, the game as a whole isn't going away or dying off, but what the game is, is dying and going away. There will be a huge shift in how the game operates from now on, and the numbers will be on the rise (probably higher than it has ever seen) and that could have massive effects on the future path of the game, but only time can tell.
As pointed out a few months ago by a UA-camr on the state of the game then, "Sea of Thieves can't survive on PVE alone" to which I responded with, "But it can't exist without it, either." PVP was killing the game, now PVE will hopefully save it.

Iv only just came back after not playing since launch and im enjoying my solo sloop travels so far. To me it really depends what time of day it is. If I play early morning I find its quiet and I can usually get things done I can't when more people are on. Then in the evening I dont even bother trying to do FOTD or SOSS because that's when all the try hards are on.
I played for like 3 hours yesterday just doing gold hoarder vaults and digs and had like 30 chests on my ship before handing in. Sometimes the game being quiet is good for us newer players.
I will say one thing tho. Rare need to kind of step up their game with adding content. One thing id like to see is something other then a Meg or a Kraken attacking you, maybe add some more sea monsters like the Hydra.

Been playing daily about 4 years now (xbox), and still play every day but it is not the same as it was a couple years ago you can feel the difference for sure. If you want an idea of the player base, take a look at the monthly ledger stats. They average like 60,000 players in the stats per month and that only counts those making enough emissary money to rate in the ledger. So there's still a lot of players on it. But even as a long time player who still plays daily, I'm pretty bored with it now and only continue playing because there's nothing else like it. There's no other naval or pirate type open world sandbox, which is kinda surprising. I have most the cosmetics, am sitting on like 23 million gold on top of that with nothing to really spend it on, and have most the commendations I'm interested in. Lately I've just been hopping open crews and that keeps it spicy because different people bring a different experience and I've landed on some cool crews.

i was agreeing to everything he said up to "maybe skull and bones can fill that void". lol big NO, we play for the unique mechanincs and tools that this games provides to paint the white canvas that is a PvP encounter. You can do harpoon turns, use stationary cannons, use blunderbombs to turn boats, activate quests to spawn random pve threats, deck shot, take on anothers person boat, use different type of amunition, win by pouring water to the other boat using only buckets, set a boat on fire, use kegs, hide for the precise moment to strike, be sword lord, be a double gunner, use cannon rowboats, break our own mast to hide behind an island or rock, eat worms to blind the enemy when boarding, you get me. Competitive or PvP lads like me remain here because there is no other game that has this many unique ways to PvP or steal something from someone. It's not all about "iron ball go hit other boat = me happy" skull and bones takes away almost 80% of what is fun for me you dont even have to know how to naval because you have cannons in all parts of the boat making you have 360° angle to shoot

Sometimes the sailing just drained all my longing to keep playing out of me, nothing really happens, i know it sounds dumb but i really felt like i was wasting my time because the sailing parts were longer than the other parts. I just wish they would add some distractions/small events for players to just enjoy while sailing. Imagine dolphins or a whale coming out of the ocean for a split moment. just bc sot isn't INTENDED to be a comp pvp game, doesn't mean you should actively punish those players who, after playing the game normally, get bored and get good at pvp. All the people crying about qs are NOT in the comp community and aren't really affected by it anyway. You can still 2 tap people before they can eat and any competent player, especially comp players, will still be easily able to sink those people. Catering to the comp side of a game is one thing, and it's ok sot isn't doing that. But ACTIVELY alienating those who spent thousands of hours on sot pvp because they simply enjoyed it, now that's kinda fucked. at least in my opinion it is. When people go as far as spending thousands of hours playing pvp, hosting their own tournaments, etc. you don't just remove such a huge chunk of what makes it fun and possible. if you don't want these people in adventure, give them back arena with private proxies. let them host their tournaments, play their tdms and queue for pvp outside of adventure.
I believe the #1 problem IS HOURGLASS. with pve people, who don't play sot for the pvp and who possibly despise pvp, the hg rewards are OBVIOUSLY still very tempting. but when they run into more competent players, instead of blaming themselves and getting better, they blame ANYTHING other than their own mistakes. and these players are sadly the majority. by putting comp pvp into adventure, rare effectively forced those pvp-loving players onto those, who hate pvp. now the majority of players is complaining about pvp instead of getting good or getting other rewards and rare is forced to take action because those pve players are the players who spent the most amount of money on sot.
Rare essentially caused a problem by forcing pvp lovers onto pvp haters and is now punishing pvp players for playing pvp in the pvp gamemode. no pvp player wanted this though.
*also, private arena proxies would allow anyone to practice pvp, making pvp more accessible for everyone to get into. they're adding priv servers for pve, why not for pvp too?

People always get tricked by Steam Charts, either not understanding how it works or other factors (like playing on other platforms)
And aside from that, I think ""dead game"" is a really stupid type of term in the gaming ecosystem. As far as I'm concerned, no game is "dead" as long as people are playing it or talking about it, or developers are updating it. Ironically, by calling SoT a "dead game", you're directly participating by keeping it alive by interacting with its community,, even if it's out of contempt for what's going on with it.

The argument is the game is a high risk high reward style of gameplay, but not everyone who wants to play it cares about the risk to reward and just want to sail the seas and find/dig up treasure, without the risk of spending a couple of hours gathering only to lose all the gold and exp earned in that time due to “its pvp bro, it’s sea of thieves not sea of friends”
Which makes sense why they finally added safer seas which is pure pve even though you take a 70% hit to earnings and only get 30% of what you would earn in high seas (multiplayer mode), but honestly I think they will revise that when they see how much safer seas draws people in more than high seas.

I think the best thing about Sea of Thieves is you can make the game whatever you want to. My favorite part of the game is player interactions; and that's where I've had the most fun. Shenanigans!

I came back near the end of Season 9? Just before guilds and what not. I don't remember what season we're on even though I play lmao.
This game I got sick of in Season 6, because it seemed lackluster. But right now, the people I'm meeting and such. The game is feeling way better (when hit reg works) and I LOVE the game more than ever. I'm casual kinda. I'm not a hardcore PvPer I'm good at it, but pure pvp has become more dead since S6. A lot of people will just run from you, or aren't as amazing as it used to be in the old seasons. Which I don't love nor hate, it feels genuinely fair now. Because even in season 6. I knew about a friend of mine, who was cheating and I knew cheaters were getting away with it since he hasn't to this day been banned.

There are 30 million sea of thieves sales, an active player base of around 250,000 seems more likely

SOt can be better.. but its mean we need a SOT II
but.. to have more people on, the PVE thats is coming will help for that!
SOT is my favorite game, but i stop playuing it.. going on sea after work, having fun... but if someone take all my stuff in 2 minutes because is a tryharder.. fock thats sad.
But with the pve server, lots of people like me that dont want the pvp all days will be there!

  • @captainfabsy1000
    @captainfabsy1000 10 місяців тому

Yeah, SoT is not really a competetive game. Not like Battlefield or COD at all.
But mate, the groundwork of SoT is stealing treasure and fighting each other for it.
That aspect needs to work right.
And some new weapons would be dope... 🙄

Games dying. Just like many before it. Mostly because the developers aren't addressing the issues many that left the community had with it. A stark lesson to be sure. Especially as a development team. You don't want your game to die? Listen to would be customers and or current ones. You show your player base you really don't care, what do you think happens? Certainly not having your product thrive. 🧐

I personally don't think the game is DEAD.. but its dying, seeing as it's not as popular as it used to be.
and Rare doing big things like Pirate life and Monkey island.. well how else will you get players back? ofc they need to come up with new things to bring back more players. that is just common sense.
It will take a Long time before the game is Dead Dead.. but losing Players it has and keeps doing, so Dying yes.. Dead No.
lets just hope Rare can fix all the Bugs and things that make the game so frustrating.

I noticed when you check emissary stats there's like 80 thousand in the gold ranks alone. That's 80 thousand players who have done Gold Hoarders emissary this month.

As much that I agree sea of thieves is casual AF, you can't deny that PvP forces you to play the game completely differently. Read, not in a casual AF way.
You can vibe in PVE, not in PVP.

People that are complaining about PvE servers are just sad they cant grief players now. Since you cant grief a true PvP player since they WANT to PvP and will fight back. lol

You know the funniest part? Even the sweatier stuff like Hourglass is more fun when you take it casually.
Sure is sweating your balls off and going for huge streaks a better gold/rep gain? Sure.
But you know what's more fun? Loading up your bow with a bunch of kegs, wait to be invaded, and then ram them with the kegs.

@@Razta_S Nah if they get the kegs before the ram goes off it's GGs.
Kegs are just funny regardless of where they are imo.

I’m all for PvP, but oh man did this game fall off for me when the average player I ran into was some ex rust double gunning giga sweat. I completely agree, sea of thieves is a casual game, and given how janky the models look and how badly the game performs when players attempt to play this game at a really high competitive level, it’s pretty clear to me rare never intended this game to be played the way a lot of the really sweaty players play it. I think this confusion is mostly due to the fact that the current PvEvP market is pretty much completely filled with very competitive games. As far as I’m aware I don’t think there is another casual PvEvP game out there. I’m at the point with the sea of thieves where I’ve done all I’m really interested in doing with it, and am currently just waiting for a content drop large enough to that will give me enough to do to return to playing this game regularly again. That being said, I did play when they dropped the sirens song world event and had the most fun I’ve had in the game in years. The removal of double gunning allowed for more drawn out fights between myself and the crews who were very obviously more skilled. The lack of hit reg as well made it feel so much better and overall I felt like I was back to when I only had 200 hours in the game. As much as people bemoan these changes, for me personally as someone who enjoys PvP but also doesn’t care enough to do aim trainer for the casual pirate game, and doesn’t have the dexterity in his digits for doing consistent specific button presses to hot swap my weapons, these changes have been nothing but good. To me the joy with this game has never been dominating another crew with my impressive ability to click on people or by showing off my prowess of performing unintended exploits on a consistent basis, all of my joy has spawned from coming up with rat brained strategies to steal treasure. For example, with the skull of sirens song, my crew mate and I were clearly outmatched by the three other crews who were also competing for it, so, instead, we took a rowboat to the island where they were going to sell it, allowed them to fight it out, and waited for them to approach the island close enough for brigsy to spawn. We then found her spawn location and hid a keg in a nearby bush and waited. The crew discovered my friend, but his death served as a good distraction as the crew seemed to assume they were safe after killing one persistent tucker. They approaches brigsy and I let fly a well placed blunder bomb and killed 2 of the 3 crew members on the spot, then before the third could react I stole the skull and sold it. That is the core of sea of thieves I love. That is what makes this game unique to me, that knowledge and strategy can and often will beat skill. If I wanted to tdm with players I’d go play cod, but I can’t steal treasure from people in cod who’ve been fighting back and forth over a single piece of loot for hours can I?

I don't know about all that, it seems to take forever to find someone to fight in PVP and if there is hundreds of thousands of players on all at once all of the server instances should be full and the gold reaper chest should always be on the horizon. But no, there is always server merges happening and sometimes the match making for PVP just gives up and spits you back at port.

You really have to differentiate what is consider a "competitive game" and what's an "e-sports game". Sea of Thieves is a game with PVP, stealing loot, fighting other crews and sinking ships, it's about heists, sneak plays and the urge of coming out on top. It's 100% a competitive game in that regard. You are competing with the other crew, no matter if it's a random encounter in Adventure or in Hourglass, you want to sink the other crew, you want to be victorious, you are competitive. Sure alot of people don't play Sea of Thieves this way, who only want to go on adventures, dig treasures and only fight if necessary. But in any game, if there's PVP=reward, there's going to be competitiveness.

I wonder if the game its really dying, if they will remove the game or let the their game for offline play. Because i hate that i have bought Minimum on Steam, and they killed all the things, didnt let the offline part working, and i hate that, if i pay for a game i want to keep it Forever working(offline)
