Amazing to think this talk was given before Proton, before Vulkan, before Fortnite, before Steam Controller, before Twitch was part of Amazon, etc. Despite all that, still very relevant, and very prescient.
My guy Gabe may not have the best speaking skills, but the work he's been doing for about a decade to Linux cannot be underestimated, especially now, with steam deck and Proton
@@Ralphunreal um, no? Not for Linux. Backwards and forwards compatibility are broken all the time. 1.2 percent of user and maybe 0.1 percent of sales isn't worth any developer's time
What I love about Gaben is that he is a CEO/president, a developer, and a gamer all at once. He knows how to speak to us. This presentation was a blast!
At the last 3 seconds of the talk he literally alludes to the steam deck and steam link on phones. This probably means valve had the idea for the steam deck and steam link since 2013. That is truly wid.
I mean yea, but a lot of people forget that not even 2 years later he came out with the steam machine, which got the ball rolling on valve wanting to make hardware for the living room, AKA steam machines, and steamOS.
Whats crazy he wanted to say steam deck there at the end of this vid lol 2 years later 😂 a linux based system is beating all the competitors cause 1. Less power consumption with a custom soc lol 2. Community driven open source
No, not even 2 years later - this talk was done all the way back in 2013. That means he's had the idea of a Linux handheld like the Steam Deck for at least 11 years!
@@yac2004 i think in 2013 they were working on steam machines. Partnering with pc makers to make living room linux pcs that run steamos. Steam deck was the child of that unsuccessful project.
Valve will make HL3 Linux exclusive which will drive a portion of PC gamers to try out SteamOS. This will also push their competitor "handheld PC" manufacturers to start giving customers the option of a Windows or SteamOS version. Their hardware competitors will start using their OS.
2024, Linux gaming is better than ever thanks to Gabe and Valve, thank you.

And don't forget - before the steam deck.
Amazon Luna and Google Stadia also run on Linux systems.

Wqtching this while downloading Doom 2016 into Linux Mint! 😊

proton isnt ideal, native is.

He umms a lot but he gets his points across pretty eloquently
Proton often runs games even better than native sometimes
watching from a steam deck
same
R5 5600, RX 6700 XT, waiting for Steam Deck 2.
It's incredible how well Gabe can see trends and project then multiple years ahead
It comes from him having principles, imo. He can see through bullshit he already recognizes due to his life and world view.

Both Gabe and his work should be studied, a lot

Steam is the way to go for gaming on Linux.
