  • Driving Downtown - Charleston South Carolina USA - Season 1 Episode 1.
Highlights include King Street - Meeting Street - Calhoun Street - East Bay Street - Broad Street - Market Street.
Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, the county seat of Charleston County,[3] and the principal city in the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area.[4] The city lies just south of the geographical midpoint of South Carolina's coastline and is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean formed by the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, or, as is locally expressed, "where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers come together to form the Atlantic Ocean".
Founded in 1670 as Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England, Charleston adopted its present name in 1783.[5] It moved to its present location on Oyster Point in 1680 from a location on the west bank of the Ashley River known as Albemarle Point. By 1690, Charles Town was the fifth-largest city in North America,[6] and it remained among the ten largest cities in the United States through the 1840 census.[7] With a 2010 census population of 120,083[8] (and a 2014 estimate of 130,113), current trends put Charleston as the fastest-growing municipality in South Carolina. The population of the Charleston Metropolitan area, comprising Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties, was counted by the 2014 estimate at 727,689 - the third largest in the state - and the 78th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States.
Known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, distinguished restaurants, and mannerly people, Charleston has received a large number of accolades, including "America's Most Friendly [City]" by Travel + Leisure in 2011 and in 2013 and 2014 by Condé Nast Traveler,[9][10] and also "the most polite and hospitable city in America" by Southern Living magazine. As a passenger on this trip, it was a pleasure to sit back with my feet up to see what I miss as I am always behind the wheel. It was a wonderful feeling as I noted the streets, businesses and all 'we' passed.
I was not thinking about Emanuel AME (at 18 minutes) when the driver turned onto Calhoun from Meeting. That caught me off guard as I was not in town when the shooting happened, however, I was glued to the television as soon as the news broke into programming.
Thanks much for such a relaxing ride in a city I love! I will be back to 'ride' again!

It's so interesting how the palm trees in South Carolina are so unique in their own way. They look completely different from the palm trees in Florida. And the palm trees in Florida look completely different than the palm trees in California.

Notice the times of day he chooses to drive, that's why most places appear desolate. Not really wise to do a driving video during peak rush hours. Walking videos on the other hand, you can do when everything is crowded.

kind of...but not really, at least compared to other american cities like Philly, Boston, Baltimore, or St. Louis. Those cities have actual large areas of "Olde World" style urban organization and architecture. In my opinion, Charleston looks a lot more colonial/southern plantation style than European.

@Adam LB for most of charleston's history it has had a black majority as it was a major slave port. if this video was made in the late 80s early 90s the demographics would have been reversed. as for the african accent i guess you are referring to the Gullah culture. its is still in existence and those people are there just not as prevalent as it once was sadly. these days you can barely find a native Charlestonian in the city

I am not from America... but is that literally the speed limit of driving on city roads? Because that looks pretty slow for me who lives in Singapore.
Although, do tell me if the speed limit varies every city or state.

    • @PerthTowne

Speed limits do vary from state to state. But generally, speed limits are low within cities for safety reasons.

I refer you to the facts as to how Charleston handled the Emanuel AME Church shooting. Run a search to read articles and view news reports. I say hello to those I do not know without considering anything that may cause others to discriminate. Noting this video was shot a few weeks after the shooting. The church is seen at 18 minutes... a moment my eyes filled with tears as one read my children stories at the library and it was my pleasure to know another as a manager a few years prior. Visit Charleston to get a feel for the area to make your own decision. #CharlestonStrong
