I have watched and enjoyed many many YT videos of "Driving Downtown" in various American cities. I have to say, Charleston, SC looks absolutely THE most amazing of them all. Such beautiful architecture and perfectly manicured tree-lined streets. Now I know where I want to go next time I visit the USA .
Still, same old car-centric city blocks, ugly overhead power lines, messy traffic signs and badly maintained roads. Oh, and ALL that lovely old architecture was funded by slavery and repression.
Very nice! How beautiful and human this city is : surely one of the most hospitable of the U.S. so that I would like to live there. Greetings from Switzerland!
i can see why a european would say that. It's very walkable for the most part(which means it's very hard to find parking lol) and given that it's one of the oldest cities in america and a lot of the multiple century-old buildings were inspired by aspects of european architecture.

My sister lives near and works at James Island in Charleston, SC. A few years back we went to visit her and visited the church where the shooting happened. It's was just a few months after the shooting and there was a lot of people. My family and I left our names with a condolence to the family of those who lost loved ones. It's such a beautiful place. For anyone who visits downtown, Charleston, I suggest parking by the battery shown at 36:59 because it’s free parking and on sundays meter parking and garages near churches are free because of church (I suggest not to bother though because it’ll be hard to find a spot since it’ll be packed)
@@aganib4506 Im from Cali too. Most of the west coast was settled after the invention of cars, so west coast cities tend to be car centric and designed for cars. A lot of cities on the east coast were built up in the 18th and 19th century and were built by european immigrants, so they tend to be more european like. There are hidden gems of cities on the east coast that no one talks about because theyre not major cities, but there are some beautiful cities out there that are under the radar. Savanah is another one
What @@DavidLopez-rk6em said. Charleston is one of the oldest cities in america and was heavily inspired by european architecture along with a bunch of coastal us cities in on the east coast. Savannah is another great example and there are tons of cities up north with historical roots from early european settlers.
I’ve been going to Charleston annually for 30 years. Can you tell me why the rainbow market is always so run down and unoccupied? Everywhere else has tenants by market square except rainbow market. Maybe a pizza joint, that’s it.
Not gonna lie,i went to Charleston on a day trip and wasn't that crazy about it. However,I only hung around King,Market and that street near the port,so maybe I didn't get the full effect. Any suggestions in case I give it another shot?
Charleston will never have tall buildings...by design...they don't want any. There are strict building codes that prohibit them. It's called The Holy City because of their many old, beautiful churches with tall steeples...no commercial or residential buildings are allowed to be built taller than those steeples. LOL...while other city's dream and drool over the prospects of a tall building or an additional skyscraper in their skyline, Charleston tells developer's to 'keep that shit outta here'. The strategy appears to be working well...Charleston (aka "New Orleans with a conscience") has replaced New York City and San Francisco as America's favorite city for the last seven years in a row. Although not seen in this video, the Ravenel Bridge is the tallest structure in the city. The bridge is 575 ft tall with 186 ft of clearance below...at 4km long, it's the third longest cable-stayed bridge in the Western Hemisphere. As for the trees, those are Palmetto palms and you can find them from the coast and up into the midlands and upstate of SC...so many that it's their state's moniker...'The Palmetto State'.
Its one of the best historic cities on the East Coast. I spend a lot of time in Wilmington NC which is a smaller version of Charleston but overlooked since farther off I-95. Wilmington-Charleston-Savannah makes for a good trip if every touring the southeast.
It's down to a Category 1 now, and Charleston is not likely to see a huge impact from it. Nothern SC around Myrtle Beach will see the worst of it in the state.
Charleston is America's showcase city. It's the only one that is comparable to the grand cities of Europe. Very classy place but also very welcoming and friendly, y'all.
They grow as far north as North Carolina. Also fun fact: even though Florida has the most palm trees, South Carolina is considered the Palmetto state because of the fact that soldiers in South Carolina built a fort out of the trees and successfully defended against the British. It’s also why the tree is on the state flag.
Also they don't grow palm trees naturally out west. They are planted by people. How they even survive amazes me.They are meant for hot wet climate..not dry hot desserts. It cracks me up seeing palm trees in Arizona and Nevada.Palm trees need a lot of rain and moisture to survive. So they must hose them down alot to survive the dry weather.lol.
Leon Kompowsky I can only assume you people commenting this are totally ignorant to the fact that the US is predominantly Subtropical in climate and ecology, and has palm trees that are hardy up to the southern Midwest, albeit smaller ones. Charleston isn't the largest city in SC. Columbia SC is the largest city and Greenville/Spartanburg/Anderson is the largest metro area in the state. But Charleston is the most beautiful city by far.
@@jermen5137 yes it is, not by much though, Columbia has a larger MSA than Charleston still though and Greenville is the largest MSA in the state of SC.
