Hey folks - DJI finally released the adapter - it's $39, and available on DJI's site (here's a link): dcra.in/2tV6JAT - It says 3-4 weeks for shipping though, but hey, better than nothing.
Indeed, saw a number of folks around CES as well using them. I think for tradeshows (or even vlogging), it's still a bit too cropped in natively for my liking (too close up), but once I added a small selfie stick/pole to it, it put it in a better spot.
Thank you so much for doing this the right way! I was so frustrated with all the other videos on this subject... All I wanted them to do was just tap the microphone once. :-)
I did a bit of a hack to improve audio in the wind while riding. I glued a bit of mic foam over both mic ports to create a windscreen and it seems to work really well and cuts down the wind noise. total hack, but it works.
So glad to see someone review this unit, been waiting for this mic adapter to finally be released, love my pocket I use it as a second camera with my Panasonic ux180.
Awesome! I’ve been waiting for a comparison video between the GoPro 7 and Osmo Pocket. So far nobody has done a very good one. Can’t wait for when you release the video. Keep it up.
Yup, looking forward to covering it from a sport-specific standpoint. I'm definitely converting to it for all my road-bike related video work that I need for the channel. But it's a tougher story for other sports (especially water related ones).
I have to disagree, I've seen several comparisons that cover it fairly well. Basically, if you want a wide FOV and/or plan to use it to do sports/action shots, the Gopro wins. For many other filming situations, the stabilization of this thing puts it on top.
I appreciate very much you made this video, I just got an Osmo Pocket for my UA-cam Channel and have been looking for alternatives to the audio Quality, yours is the most honest revision I found so far. Thanks.
I have been reading your incredible and comprehensive reviews online for more years than I'd like to admit, so glad I stumbled across your channel here and just like your review on your website you do not disappoint. Great review on this Osmo Pocket Mic adapter very detailed and to the point without missing a thing, saved me a lot of time and probably money. Thanks!! I think myself to be somewhat tech savvy and yes I should know about TRRS & TRS......let's put it this way, after watching your video I now know why the microphone for my GoPro doesn't work.
You must be the first to get your hands on this adapter. I ordered another cheap (55 cents) adapter from China where they claim it's going to work. Will see about that. Even 19 EUR would be way too much for a piece of plastic like that. Thanks for the great comparison and review.
Would definitely be curious to see if it works for sure! I suspect once the DJI adapters start shipping, I'm sure we'll see others that become compatible quickly. Though, that never actually happened for the GoPro adapter. :-/
Thaaaanks for you video, man!!! Now i ordered my Osmo Pocket with a Rode Mic and the TRRS Adapter! The Problem with the sound is solved now, i think! The cam is great and the sound now too! Thanks again!
Thanks for the video, very helpful, I got the accessory kit and I must admit I could use the audio adapter, hopefully that will be out soon. Kudos and thanks again
Nice to see at least there are working samples floating around now. Still do not understand why the adapter is so long, personally I would have preferred they made it the same width size as the pocket (more cubed) but shorter. Looks like it could easily get broke or pulled out since there is just a small portion of the adapter going into the USB-C port. Ideally if it was like Wireless adapter with same USB-C tip, tripod mount on bottom and the mic input on either the sides or the back (so you could still stand up the OSMO Pocket) like you can with the WL adapter since the cord comes out the back. It would be one accessory that would solve a few things. Or just add the Mic input and tripod mount to the wireless adapter as an all in one solution.
Nice! As soon as I got my Osmo Pocket, I got a cheap adapter - obviously it didn't work, but until now it's the most watched video on my channel. :-) Luckily my husband reminded me to do the tap-test while I was filming. Can't wait for adapters to work/the legit one to be sold.
Thank you for this, it is so helpful for someone new to all of this (me!). I am about to upgrade to the Pocket after just using an old phone and dji gimbal for my channel. Noise on the phone mic is a major problem and this seems to be a good way around it. I don't want to make expensive mistakes!
Ok, so just tried the wireless module. Oddly, it doesn't seem to work with the USB-C adapter for the mic. It just keeps using the internal mics. I suspect that could well be a pre-production bug since the USB-C mic adapter isn't shipping yet.
Hmmm Let's hope that its a pre-production bug and that DJI will solve it before they start selling them. If not... I'll still get the adapter :-) Thank you for testing things!!
Same problem with the Hawkeye firefly 8SE action cam. Hard to find a suitable jack to use and alternative Mic that has a 3.5mm jack. Firefly supply a USB lavalier microphone for use with their camera but I gave up trying to find an adapter to allow me to use my RODE videomic with it.
sounds great. i wish rode would make the video mic me L for usb C and osmo would allow to connect directly at the port :D. maybe a mic which can swivel around, so you can pick up sound from yourself or an interview partner... well i am dreaming
I tweeted DJI in hopes of some indication of an ETA but nothing yet. I'm looking at this camera for work for ease of use, but if we can't get proper audio from a lapel mic it's a no-go.
Not only DJI charges you a premium for what is a cheap piece of plastic and makes it impossible to use a third party equivalent adapter but, at least outside of the USA this item is impossible to find. I even managed to buy it from a local reseller, I am in the UK, to be told the day before delivery (a good three weeks after I ordered it) that it was out of stock and would not be back in stock for another month at least. Furthermore, two-three days later, I received a stock reminder by DJI (as I had registered with their service before finding out that a UK reseller had one in stock) that the item was back in stock. Nevertheless, when I tried to buy it from their store (I received the reminder at 11.30pm and I saw the email only two hours later when I tried to buy it from their online store) I could not buy it and customer service told me that it was out of stock and tried to convince me to buy it from an American resellers for close to double its price (plus possible import tax by UK customs).

Whoa that mic adapter looks like a proper mic adapter and not a massive brick like GoPro!! Stupid GoPro I want for them to succeed but they make it hard
Adapter is so big! Are the build in microphones still working when the adapter is used? If the build in is disabled then it defeats the use when you want to do a vlog where you want to interview someone.
The adapter is actually the smallest USB-C to 3.5mm mic adapter on the market from any major companies that I'm aware of. It disables the internal mics when you use the external microphone port. So you'll only get the mic audio recorded. That's pretty much the norm on all cameras. If you wanted to record multiple people in an interview, you could use other external mics that are better for that (or, even dual-channel it into the OSMO Pocket).
Wish they would have put a mic jack on the wireless adapter, and hope the extension stick has a jack. As well wish they had all or most the accessories available at time of release or at least with in that first week. Given if any one got it at time of release needed most them and would like to try them to make sure this is something that works for them. And you only have so much time to return it if not what you're looking for it to do.
That'd have been ideal - or, just having the mic adapter straight on the unit itself. Given the micro-sd card slot isn't waterproofed (or even covered), adding another non-waterproof port is no biggie.
I tried. No go. However I wouldn’t presume that to mean it won’t work upon release. My experience with pre-production accessories and DJI specifically is that most of the time the firmware/software enabling things like that hits the same day it starts shipping.
Thanks! Yeah, my challenge with those type of devices is I feel in order to review them properly I'd need to have a super structured schedule with consistent (progressive) load being applied each week. Else there's just too many variables. For me right now, I'm consistently doing something each day, but what I do sorta goes with the wind. :-/
@@Dcrainmaker Fair enough, BTW should you be around Brussels or Antwerp one of these days do not hesitate to make a sign, I would love to share a run and perhaps help you trying one of those cool gadgets !?
I want the adapter :( ! I only used my Osmo Pocket once for vlogging, I struggle a little bit with auto-focus which can be out of wack from time to time, any advice ?
It's tough because it's a contrast based system, so in some cases it doesn't focus right, especially at close range (like vlogging). Double-check you've got the latest firmware of course, and perhaps try holding it a tiny bit further out with some sort of stick/device (for example I used the GoPro adapter and the GoPro shorty stick).
Thanks for the review, you got my thumbs up ;) May I ask what wind protection you used for the mic in the bike scene? I did a test with two Sennheiser lavalier mics and they both sounded pretty bad. So I tried the rode you use in this video and it works much better. Any ideas why?
I also want to use the Osmo Pocket on a show floor but I'll be doing interviews and product walk-throughs with reps. In the case where I need to record a person, and not myself for selfies, do you have a rig recommendation? I am happy to buy and mount a directional mic but I am not sure the best way. It'd be great if DJI made a USB mic that plugged directly in the port and just stuck out a bit. Like you, I'd like to avoid using my phone attached if I can.
Fantastic video and great insight... do you have any advice on what would be needed to connect an external 3.5mm tie mic to an Apple USB C iPad Pro 2018? Thx
@DC Rainmaker. Thanks for clearing that out. When will we see a full review of the Osmo Pocket from you? I find it hard to trust a lot of the reviewers and I always go and check out your reviews before buying a new gadget.
Hoping to get it out next week. I had wanted to have it out this week, but honestly, just a bit backlogged on a few other things that have to go out first this week. Cheers!
@@mirkomonti No worries! It's clipped to the upper edge of my jersey, the tiny black fuzzy dot to the right of my zipper (my left, but your right when watching the video).
Can you buy an aftermarket adapter that will work? Tested the google usc to mic 3.5mm adapter and did the tap test and didnt hear anything. So its not working. if I need to fork out $60 AUD just for a stupid mic adapter ill be pissed
Unfortunately happens a lot, there are no 3rd party adapters for either company that actually work. The adapters have a chip in them that validates authenticity. While nothing is ever unbreakable, it’s been a few years that they’ve been out and nobody has successfully made an alternative.
Very useful review. Thank you! Have you found that you need a dead cat on your lav mike when riding outside? And were you using one in this video? The sound quality on the bike was great and I didn't hear any wind noise.
Hi, thanks for taking the time to put this together for us. Just to be clear, in order to use the Rode smartLav+ Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone we need the Rode SC3 3.5mm TRRS to TRS Cable Adaptor AND the Osmo Pocket 3.5mm Adapter? This is the setup you recommend? Thanks again and best wishes to you.
@@BestFavorite I happen to use this one the most simply because I also use it with my smartphone a lot when I'm not using the Pocket OSMO. There's tons of other mics out there though, so I wouldn't necessarily box yourself into a corner on this one.
Can you test to see if the microphone adapter works together with the wireless module? The wireless module has a usb-c connection at the back which is probably ment for charging, but it would be great value if it actually worked together with the microphone adapter
Indeed, it's really nuts how many of them are fake. Most of them are click-bait titles and then sometimes they say it didn't work. Then the remainder it takes a bunch of folks in the comments to point out it didn't work.
I left the files/Pocket back at the studio for the night, but I'll triple-check tomorrow. Still, the audio was dual-sided in my headphones (not channeled into a single channel), and the audio you listened to wasn't touched at all, just straight out of camera. But will triple-check again tomorrow.
I need to have the osmo on a stand, but I can't connect the mic with the tripod I have. Is there another tripod where I can still connect the mic to the bottom of the osmo?
May I ask you if you happened to test this microphone adapter WITH the USB connection of the OSMO Pocket WiFi adapter... how nice it would be if this really would function...
Thank you very much for this quick answer... it will be very sad and a big missed chance when they will not do some effort to make it work... Take care!
Can you confirm that it can be plugged into android, AND the mic after will work out of the bottom ( meaning I can use the phone brace with hot shoe mount, plug in osmo pocket to phone, plug in mic adapter and put mic in the hot shoe adapter on the top)? Aka full on vlog kit...on other things when its plugged into android the bottom port stops working, that'd why in concerned?

It hasn't started shipping yet, and DJI doesn't have a timeframe yet. They had a few media sample adapters at CES 2019 that I was able to pickup/borrow.
Yup, definitely. You may need to toy around with a TRRS to TRS or like adapter (check out the description), depending on the exact mic plug. But that's a few dollar adapter at worst.
You mentioned that someone may need a trrs to trs cable. How is the Osmo connector situated? Is it situated for 2 rings or three? Do you know when it will be available? Nice video by the way.
Interesting so it isn’t a firmware upgrade that’s needed - it’s internal proprietary electronics in the adaptor. Be interesting to see how full blown professional powered mics would work - the uk Tasman 10cs recorders I have have a passthrough and are small enough for portability. All everyone needs now is for the Cine-D back in the firmware and that is a viable tool for ‘some’ professional filming. Also be interested how something like the mymyk+ could handle dual mics into it. Up to now I’ve been using dual sound so this should solve a lot of problems.
Correct - no firmware needed. Unfortunately aside from a few other random Rode mics and some prosumer wireless lavs, I don't have much else higher end. I'd love to see a V2 of the Pocket include a slightly wider lens, and then Cine-D or like on it. Though, can't imagine what prices might do...
The Osmo starting price is excellent but the price of accessories puts it in a different category. And I consider the accessories to be necessary. Maybe next black Friday will have a more affordable package. A bit like the combo packages on the DJI drones.
I definitely agree, to me the OSMO Pocket feels a bit like a sales/market test. Specifically, with how much 'de-bundling' (as they call it in the airline industry) they can get away with. Features like WiFi or Bluetooth that should absolutely be in the package, but somehow aren't. I love the unit, and honestly don't miss the connectivity a ton - but still, everything on it is an odd upsell. More so than usual for DJI.
That mic adapter is great! Are you haveing focus issues on it as I am? Hoping to run with it for the Houston Marathon but the reliability of the focus is frustrating.

I did a test with two Sennheiser lavalier mics and they both sounded pretty bad. So I tried the rode you use in this video and it works much better. Any ideas why?
Thanks for the helpful video! What is the lav mic you're using?
Thx
Yup, you can use Apple's own USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. I tried it and it works just fine (with Apple products). Enjoy!
Massive thanks!! This solution works perfectly.
Hey, I love your video. Do we have any more information about when the adapter will still be here. I'm in China and it hasn't even appeared here yet!
Yup - a mere 2 hours after you hit post on your comment: dcra.in/2tV6JAT - Enjoy!
Cheers!
@@Dcrainmaker . Any idea when you will be posting the full review?
dji.com has finally added the Osmo 3.5mm adapter to their accessory page for email alert of when it gets in stock.
Hey man! Sorry, I didn’t get which adapter you connected to improve the audio when you were on the bike... Thank you.
That's the DJI adapter in that case (with a SmartLav+).
Oh, OK! And where did you stick the mic? I didn’t see it. (bear with me, I’m italian...)
@@mirkomonti No worries! It's clipped to the upper edge of my jersey, the tiny black fuzzy dot to the right of my zipper (my left, but your right when watching the video).
Thank you!
Would you know if a Rode mic work when I attach it to a Samsung Note 10?
Can you buy an aftermarket adapter that will work? Tested the google usc to mic 3.5mm adapter and did the tap test and didnt hear anything. So its not working. if I need to fork out $60 AUD just for a stupid mic adapter ill be pissed
Nope, no 3rd party adapters work with the DJI products. Nor with the GoPro products.
@@Dcrainmaker so the eBay one I asked and bought lied
Unfortunately happens a lot, there are no 3rd party adapters for either company that actually work. The adapters have a chip in them that validates authenticity. While nothing is ever unbreakable, it’s been a few years that they’ve been out and nobody has successfully made an alternative.
@@Dcrainmaker thanks mate
Very disappointed in DJI this time around for making it so expensive
Very useful review. Thank you! Have you found that you need a dead cat on your lav mike when riding outside? And were you using one in this video? The sound quality on the bike was great and I didn't hear any wind noise.
No dead-cat on the mic at all. Just straight-up Rode SmartLav+ mic as-is: amzn.to/2W76dwr
DC Rainmaker thanks! That's pretty impressive as you were in some windy conditions.
Correct, you need both for the SmartLav+, due to the fact that it's originally designed for smartphones instead of cameras.
@@Dcrainmaker do you mind telling me the reason for using this microphone instead of using one that wouldn't require the adapter? Thanks!
@@BestFavorite I happen to use this one the most simply because I also use it with my smartphone a lot when I'm not using the Pocket OSMO. There's tons of other mics out there though, so I wouldn't necessarily box yourself into a corner on this one.
Hope they release a USB C microphone a bit like the RODE VMML, it's too messy to carry a bunch of extra stuff to improve the audio quality.
Can you test to see if the microphone adapter works together with the wireless module? The wireless module has a usb-c connection at the back which is probably ment for charging, but it would be great value if it actually worked together with the microphone adapter
I tried, as of now it does not. But I wouldn’t assume that it won’t once released.
Does it work with the current firmware?
@@timgalletas3856 I'll try in the morning when back at the studio with the wireless adapter/latest firmware. Remind me if I forget. Cheers!
DC Rainmaker thank you!
Thanks for the fab update, are all of the current mic videos really fake? Cheers
Indeed, it's really nuts how many of them are fake. Most of them are click-bait titles and then sometimes they say it didn't work. Then the remainder it takes a bunch of folks in the comments to point out it didn't work.
DC Rainmaker Crazy isn’t it, it’s all about the views for some. I can always trust your reviews 👍🏼
Any video claiming it works and using any other adaptor is fake.
How to mount the pocket on a vertical mini tripod with that 3.5mm adapter on ? do you need any kind of additional plate ?
Does the mic adapter allow for stereo recordings?
I left the files/Pocket back at the studio for the night, but I'll triple-check tomorrow. Still, the audio was dual-sided in my headphones (not channeled into a single channel), and the audio you listened to wasn't touched at all, just straight out of camera. But will triple-check again tomorrow.
Great news. Thanks, and for the review. Glad it's not vaporware.
@@Dcrainmaker Interested for stereo as well. Thanks a lot.
yea, i would be good to know if you can feed it with 2 "lavs" or audio streams..
It doesn’t work. At least not yet. I suspect we’ll see a firmware update address that, since the adapter still isn’t released yet.
Hello friend, I already purchased the 3.5mm adaptor and a lavalier mic, I thinking about to buy the expansion kit witch includes the bluetooth adaptor for the osmo pocket but I want to know if you can plug the 3.5 adaptor to the wireless adaptor to the usb c port in it and if the mic will work.
Do you hace any idea? Thanks!!!
I have bought a Osmo Pocket 3 , but it cannot be conectet to the røde Mike with the adapter ? do you know somthing buy thaT ???? BESTREGARD FOR NEW YEAR 2024 SØREN COLDING
If you use the Do It Hall Hanlle, can you get around the need to use the adapter?
I notice there's like a "cooldown" once you plugin the mic while recording. Like the levels adjust for a moment and not instantly.
Wish you had done a check with the rode mics (Micro and Pro)!
Yeah, I checked and they worked fine. Was trying to keep video semi-considering. Cheers!
Can I record sound with Anker usb-c to lightning audio adapter and Sennheiser Ambeo Smart headset?
Hi, nice review, i bough some cheap adapter and they dont work, can you plug the dji 3.5 adapter into the wireless module and will it still work, I like to use my phone to start and stop recording so need to wifi adapter on the osmo pocket
Nope, only the DJI adapter works because there’s a software validation check. And you can’t use the wireless module either :(
@@Dcrainmaker Thanks for the answer,,,,i just ordered the dji adapter, thats a real shame it doesn't work with the wireless adapter, i hope the next version has the 3.5mm jack in the side of the pocket osmo and wifi built in, .....a while we are making wishes give us some zoom too......thanks, ..love your channel.
hi. thanks for the great video.
now question is does having a microphone (the bigger one you have on the side) make a difference in recording a music thats going on like in a wedding or b-day party? does it make it clear or any difference at all?
The other mics are more directional, so they’re designed to capture someone speaking, rather than all around audio.
@@Dcrainmaker would you have any suggestion to which or what type of microphone i can get for that purpose? to get better recorded music and audio recordings.
There seems to be a little delay with the video and audio syncing. Is that because of the adapter, or another issue?
This is all good but I went to DJI site and they don't even sell them yet where did you get yours??
As noted in the video, I was at CES (trade show) last week and they had a few samples on-hand there.
Can this adapter be used on the action 3? I've got one and a saramonic b1 but it doesn't work. Any ideas?
Thanks for the Video. But please tell me, where can i buy the Adapter which i plug directly into the Osmo pocket… Sorry, Maybe my english is to bad… :-(
It hasn't started shipping yet, and DJI doesn't have a timeframe yet. They had a few media sample adapters at CES 2019 that I was able to pickup/borrow.
Oh thanks, i thought i am tu stupid to read the inscription ;-)
Thank you. Could I use DJI adapter and connect to BOYA BY-WM6 UHF Professional Wireless Omnidirectional Lavalier Lapel Microphone System
The link to your lav mic is just the adapter cable. What is the mic you are using?
Thanks, but is it for sale yet? The DJI adapter? Cant find it on DJI website
Not yet.
Thank you for this video! It was very useful.
What is that place where you were riding a bike? Looks gorgeous!
Can you use the mic adapter and a powerbank at the same time some how??
That mic adapter is great! Are you haveing focus issues on it as I am? Hoping to run with it for the Houston Marathon but the reliability of the focus is frustrating.
