Can we not all get together and try to overturn the precedent against locking blade knives? It's a decision that makes absolutely no sense at all, and means people are at risk of seriously hurting themselves because it's harder to have a safe knife for the job. And it's not even a law, it's just a precedent set in court. And what's more, it does absolutely nothing to curb knife crime, since no one is going around stabbing people with a 3in or less locking blade pocket knife!

But I keep mine at stock 20° and it still holds. Also, AFAIK, you can get a №6 Opinel, remove the locking ring and it will still be legal in UK.

Throughout the early years of my almost eight-decades-long life I usually carried many different non-locking folding pocket knives, and never (seriously) hurt myself with any of them. However after using my first locking-blade knife, I ONLY use and carry those now, because they are arguably safer and always feel more secure in use. I absolutely understand the fact that there are legal prohibitions against carrying them in many jurisdictions throughout the world, but I think those are all examples of legislation (or regulation) gone insane. Limiting blade length make much more sense, but even the usually legal three-inch models are sufficient to severely injure or kill people, so perhaps that kind of prohibition also is ridiculous. That said, I would not care to find myself in a crowd anywhere in the world where a lot of people are carrying butcher knives. Given the concealed-carry gun laws in most U.S. states where I live, I suppose that concern is also very silly of me. We live in a world gone mad, but I suppose that first happened eons ago.
As someone who's been getting into whittling, it's nice to see a sheepsfoot blade get a mention. I'd love to see a rundown of straight blades. At the moment I use a non-foldable Morakniv knife, and would love a pocket carry knife (UK legal) for taking to the allotment.
Duncan with you looking for a knife for the allotment that comes under good reason to carry a locking blade for a small heavy duty workhorse at a budget it is hard to beat the QSP penguin it comes in D2 steel with a mikarta handle and like a straight razor out of the box. Although locking as stated it would fall under good reason to carry when going too and from allotment also the lock is security for doing heavy work. As to how good I have used a penguin for fitting carpets instead of stanley blades it is sharp enough to do the work and comes with a decent sheepsfoot blade shape.
Great video! Potential wild card?: Svord Peasant Mini, uk legal, extended tang so you palm soft locks the blade open, high carbon stainless steel and best of all they range from £20 for plastic scales to £30 for wood. Plus if you're so inclined if you're into modding your gear then it also has a lot of options.
I have the Boker plus tech tool and Byrd Tern and can vouch for both. Very different knives, but both decent. The Byrd is more of a rough and ready work horse and the Boker has a more elegant feel. Both sharp out of the box. Keep up the good work Jon, always informative reviews that are excellent. 👍🏽
A good UK legal alternative to the Opinel without a locking collar (I can't buy into the insanity of making that safety feature illegal to carry) if you like the more traditional look is the range of smaller Jokers. There are slipjoint models with different handle materials, blade shapes and steels all at around 2.5 inches blade length. I got a carbon steel slipjoint model with olive wood scales and it is superb quality for not much money and it looks good. Do really like the Real Steal Luna too and I'm not a modern knife guy in the least.
@William Tell Considering the current trend is towards doubling down on government overreach, no I'm not hopeful. Happy Friday Jon, disappointed that you did not include a Victorinox single blade knife in the line up - the budget priced ones like the Celidor handled 84mm Bantam, Alox 84mm bantam & even the Alox 93mm Solo ( AKA Swiss Army 1 ) are all very reasonably priced. Also something like the very budget friendly UK legal Rough Ryder Denim Micarta Folding Pocket Knife RR2181 Wharncliffe. As for Opinel - I have a strong dislike of a French gardening tool which doubles as kitchen knife for cutting garlic & stinky French cheese being described as a pocket knife for EDC when it belongs in the garden shed or kitchen cutlery draw. I understand the insane legal limitations in the UK have made it a Captive Market for knives that would not get a 2nd look in the rest of the world & if I was still resident in the UK I would be carrying a range of Victorinox pocket knives for EDC & certain other slip joints like the RR2181
The list is pretty endless Steve for options - I wanted to show some I've not showcased before. Agree the Opinel is basic - but it's nostalgic and cheap!

Nothing keeps that blade open, the "friction" you mentioned is just two pieces of wood rubbing against the blade on an area smaller than a child's pinky nail...
One thing about the Byrd Tern's choil that is better than other slip joints with the choil is that it stays protective even if the knife starts to fold. On the boker for example when the knife starts to fold the choil gets invaded by the frame of the handle and pushes your finger out of safety - same with other knives. With the Tern you finger can stay safely in the choil even to the point of full closure

My tiny Swiss Army keychain knife (Manager?) with pen, scissors, tweezers, toothpick, main blade..is always everything I hardly ever need! Honestly, as I don’t use a knife tool for work I don’t see the need for edc-ing a knife. The same goes for a tiny, but potent Olight keychain light. Instead of EDC I call them GWS goes without saying lol. They are unnoticeably, always on my keychain and enough, if not more than I typically need. Not being a killjoy; it’s just reality for me .
Great content as always 👍🏻 Never heard CRKT being called "cricket"! My favorite was Real Steel Luna When I was abroad recently I wanted to come back home with my first pocket knife. Went to a very nice blade shop, held a Byrd knife, don't know which model, but the handles were unpleasantly sharp. Would've taken it otherwise. Bought a white scales Huntsman instead, which is less exciting, but Victorinox doesn't sell them in white here so it still feels unique
Any idea if there are import restrictions beyond the carry criteria? My wife and I will be traveling to the UK soon for vacation and I am used to having a pocket knife at all times. I don’t want to cause trouble entering the UK with a knife in my checked luggage but would like to have something handy as we explore both the cities and the countryside.
I’m surprised the Sodbuster JR didn’t make the list. It’s a great folder and stays in rotation with my locking folders. It holds its own against modern designs.
Hi Jon, While watching the knives I couldn’t help but notice the great looking black vest with yellow tag hanging by the collar you’re wearing. What brand is that please? Is it Parajumpers? Thanks!
As someone who is slowly recovering from a borrowed slipjoint knife folding on their fingers. I'll never use another. I'll stay with the added safety of a locking blade, regardless of UK law.
A good overall video Jon, with a decent line-up 👌 I am surprised you didn't feature the Spyderco Urban Lite with S30V steel, at £70 - that would be my choice on the higher end of the budget and for the lower end it's the Luna - 💯% Atb Gus 👍

Great video, but you didn't say which of the 8 was your favourite and whether any would take the throne from your Victorinox 91mm. I currently own the Real Steel Luna which is a great little knife. Chose it over the Boker Tech Tool because it seemed to be a better knife.
I stopped short of picking a favourite! The Vic has added functionality so not really a replacement for me but could be additional carry! Luna is best value in my view. Kansept I purchased after the review 😊
@@JonGadget I actually had the Luna as my primary carry, then someone did a video on the Pioneer Alox X and Victorinox had a sale and the Luna got demoted lol
@Jon - the Boker War Toad, was that UKPC legal? It seems to comply and was friction only. The tang (?) At the back afforded it closure protection without a lock. I can't find one anywhere though sadly.
@@JonGadget it's incredibly thick and scary looking - I like its simplicity and concept though I have yet to see one IRL. Getting hard to find now sadly.
Please note: whilst a blade under a certain length is technically legal this is entirely dependant on the police and prosecution service believing you are carrying it for a justifiable purpose. It is illegal to carry ANY object which can realistically cause harm regardless of blade length if the police believe it’s with the intention of causing harm or damage, the onus is on you to convince them otherwise. I’m not a lawyer but am aware people have been prosecuted for having hammers, hair clips (!), and a wrench. Blade length is NOT a guarantor of legality in the UK, that’s not how our laws are written or interpreted.
Beware of the Boker XS! I have 3 with broken back springs !I have a forth that i tightened so tight that it is virtually a fixed blade. Tried to contact Boker both in the U.S and in Germany. No reply.
I'm confused, what does "locking" mean in UK law? Because as far as I can see the Opinel - one of which I do own (but with a large enough blade to make the question academic) - does lock, but apparently is legal?
Do y'all get classic grandpa knives from brands like Case and Old Timer over there? Would seem like great options as well given the legal restrictions!
Man, so silly you can’t have a locking blade in the uk. I think we sometimes take that for granted here in the states. We can have cannons over here lol
I had a few Opinel knives at one time, I used get one free with a shirt or Jumper when I bought them from Ernest Doe's here in the U.K. Nowadays rarely carry anything other than a Victorinox multi use. But for sure my go to when hiking fishing or out and about in the countryside is a lock knife, I have a good selection and having had a slip joint close on my fingers one time I would not use anything else. I keep all of my knives razor sharp too, as the saying goes a blunt knife is a dangerous knife!
This selection is severely hampered by the exclusion of spyderco (not byrd) knives. They are not cheap any more, but they are still incredible. I own most of the items you feature here, and a spyderco urban or UKPK are better than any of them

Totally get that - some need more heavy duty and some just like to collect - each to their own
The Victorinox Alox family are Superb !
Great content as always 👍🏻
Never heard CRKT being called "cricket"!
My favorite was Real Steel Luna
When I was abroad recently I wanted to come back home with my first pocket knife. Went to a very nice blade shop, held a Byrd knife, don't know which model, but the handles were unpleasantly sharp. Would've taken it otherwise.
Bought a white scales Huntsman instead, which is less exciting, but Victorinox doesn't sell them in white here so it still feels unique
Thank you nice informative watch ..more please.
Great Video my Friend and are Fixed Blade Knives Legal in the UK.? I just think it’s odd that locking pocket knives are frowned upon. Semper Fidelis
I never heard CRKT pronounced "cricket" before, is this a thing? Can't find anything on the Columbia River Knife & Tool website about it.
Thanks Jon - lovely lineup.
I've got the Vagnino (which I love), but you really should check out the Fox Babycore..
Let me know your thoughts.
Cheers
I’m surprised the Sodbuster JR didn’t make the list. It’s a great folder and stays in rotation with my locking folders. It holds its own against modern designs.
so many options.....I will check it out though 👍
Hi Jon, While watching the knives I couldn’t help but notice the great looking black vest with yellow tag hanging by the collar you’re wearing. What brand is that please? Is it Parajumpers? Thanks!
Hi! Yes, Parajumpers it is 👍
Thank you Jon!
Nice. I just bought a QSP Penguin off of Heinnie, just to use around the house ofc ;)
There is now a Penguin slip joint. It's lovely
@@SkipperTyrrel yes, I have one. I drilled and tapped holes for a pocket clip on mine.
Some good choices on here although I am suprised there was not at least one victorinox on there. I cannot go a day without my tinker.
As someone who is slowly recovering from a borrowed slipjoint knife folding on their fingers.
I'll never use another.
I'll stay with the added safety of a locking blade, regardless of UK law.
fair point
Surprised that you overlooked or neglected to include the Victorinox Alox Solo (a.k.a Swiss Army 1 Alox)?
A good overall video Jon, with a decent line-up 👌
I am surprised you didn't feature the Spyderco Urban Lite with S30V steel, at £70 - that would be my choice on the higher end of the budget and for the lower end it's the Luna - 💯%
Atb Gus 👍
I love ur channel more than John's channel😇
🥰🥰😍
@@toolslover3645 that is very kind of you to say so buddy, but Jon features some great videos with some amazing products, most of which I know and some I don't - mostly, the expensive stuff, which is always nice to see, especially when I cannot afford it...
Filming another video + giveaway tomorrow 😉 be well,
Atb Gus 👍
the opinel stainless is great! it's 12c28m
Not seen it before but it looks UK legal albeit a bit strange!
@@JonGadget it's incredibly thick and scary looking - I like its simplicity and concept though I have yet to see one IRL. Getting hard to find now sadly.
From what I've heard, no knife is UK friendly. If it has a blade and you're carrying it, they will twist the law into making it an offensive weapon.
No they won't. The law is clear.
Apparently theyll try and get you to admit its a weapon with sneaky wording like "could somebody consider this a weapon".
They will ask you do you agree this could be used as a weapon you answer very clearly THIS A TOOL
What model was that black victorinox? 2 layer?
Hi where do I get the one handed thumb stud?? For the Luna
?????
Please note: whilst a blade under a certain length is technically legal this is entirely dependant on the police and prosecution service believing you are carrying it for a justifiable purpose. It is illegal to carry ANY object which can realistically cause harm regardless of blade length if the police believe it’s with the intention of causing harm or damage, the onus is on you to convince them otherwise. I’m not a lawyer but am aware people have been prosecuted for having hammers, hair clips (!), and a wrench. Blade length is NOT a guarantor of legality in the UK, that’s not how our laws are written or interpreted.
Hey, so the Opinel sold in the UK never have any locking system ? Didn't know that.
They do - but are not legal to carry
@@JonGadget Thanks. Hi from France
Beware of the Boker XS! I have 3 with broken back springs !I have a forth that i tightened so tight that it is virtually a fixed blade. Tried to contact Boker both in the U.S and in Germany. No reply.
I thought your Compact was red.....?, the Boker techtool is really posh for the money 👍👍
I'm confused, what does "locking" mean in UK law? Because as far as I can see the Opinel - one of which I do own (but with a large enough blade to make the question academic) - does lock, but apparently is legal?
there is a non-locking version of the Opinel - the locking version would be classed as not legal for carry in the UK without good reason
I think you'd be mistaken. Best to get an Opinel #6 and pry off the locking mechanism. Or even doing the same with a Nō7 and grinding the tip off.
@@JonGadget I'm wondering what is considered a "good reason" for having a locking version of any small pocket knife?
Do y'all get classic grandpa knives from brands like Case and Old Timer over there? Would seem like great options as well given the legal restrictions!
Has the Spyderco UKPK doubled in price I don't remember it cost that much?
Man, so silly you can’t have a locking blade in the uk. I think we sometimes take that for granted here in the states. We can have cannons over here lol
Great video, have you tested the Boker Atlas?
I had a few Opinel knives at one time, I used get one free with a shirt or Jumper when I bought them from Ernest Doe's here in the U.K. Nowadays rarely carry anything other than a Victorinox multi use. But for sure my go to when hiking fishing or out and about in the countryside is a lock knife, I have a good selection and having had a slip joint close on my fingers one time I would not use anything else. I keep all of my knives razor sharp too, as the saying goes a blunt knife is a dangerous knife!
Nope
Gawd that intro music is so jarring !!
I don't think the Boker XS is EDC anymore wince the law stated that its not just the cutting edge anymore but the blade length
Where did you get a luna for thirty pounds 😵💫
Would the Opinel be legal UK carry?
Yes, but has to be non locking version
Shame the twisted assisted junzi didn’t make the cut. By far the best uk legal at the moment imo.
The Opinel uses the Virobloc locking system and is thus not UK legal.
It’s an option for UK chose one without
I love your channel!!!
thank you 👍
C R K T - Columbia River Knife and Tool - Not actually Cricket
Can't beat the trusty victorinox swiss champ
This selection is severely hampered by the exclusion of spyderco (not byrd) knives. They are not cheap any more, but they are still incredible. I own most of the items you feature here, and a spyderco urban or UKPK are better than any of them
As the Opinel is equipped with the Viroblock locking system, it is not exactly a non-locking knife.
if only you lived in the states, then you could enjoy the pleasures of locking knives.
