- The year 2157. Astronaut Max makes an emergency landing on an unexplored planet, where he is taken prisoner by the aborigine Zef and surrendered to the authorities. The local social order resembles a militaristic dictatorship of the 20th century. The power belongs to anonymous rulers, the Unknown Fathers, who erect towers throughout the country, which propaganda calls anti-ballistic.

The civilization doesn't look at all like '1900 AD.'
This sounds and looks like an updated Flash Gordon adventure.
I'm always disappointed when a human ends up on an unknown planet and runs into the same species again, i.e. humans.
it's cheaper to film that way. I kinda like it though. adds a bit of mystery to it leaving you wonder why there are humans on other planets and you start pondering the lore.

I'm actually pretty confident that humanoid beings would be the standard for most of the universe. I'm not saying there wouldn't be variants here and there, but judging by what we're made up of and what everything we can see is made up of and how similar it all is, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they were humanoid. Now that's not to say they would be safe to touch and I wouldn't go eating or drinking whatever they do.

So, this is the reverse of the Star Trek TOS episode 'For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky'.
This movie is a faithful adaptation of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's 1969 novel "Dark Planet". The English language translation was first published as "Prisoners of Power".
Obviously as it's from 1969 the plot and themes were not, as suggested by some people, here, inspired by later movies and books
The same authors wrote "A Roadside Picnic" which was inspiration for the Stalker movie (and games).
Great books they made, that were my favourite readings long ago.

This is based on a book in the Noon Universe book series. Worth reading if you are into post apocalypse dystopian scifi.
