That ficus tree looks really amazing.
Thank you, it will be interesting to see it many years from now!
Its amazing to rewatch this video after years, knowing how these trees look like today!!!
Seeing the progress in those playlists makes this channel so amazing!
I hope it will be a good record as we watch the trees progress into the far future! I hope to live to at least 100 and keep making videos!
Thanks Nigel. Very nice update on your trees.
Thank you TRC Mustang!
Absolutely fab....love watching your videos, Vic
Thank you Victor!
fantastic trees, Nigel, you are the best!
Thank you my friend!
Thank you so much for this comparison, Nigel! It was super helpful when I was deciding what to order online.
You are most welcome!
Lots of information. The Benjamina took more attractive look than before. Great job Nigel, thank you very much.
Thank you, I think I'll reduce the height of the canopy in half eventually. Lots of work to go on it!
Man!! I can't believe how good the roots came out on the frankenstein ficus...that might be your masterpiece of bonsai engineering for now.
It may be too early to call the operation a success, but......IT IS ALIVE! (Dr. Frankenstein impression)
I've watched a bunch of these videos in the past week, I love the updates on trees from previous videos and the updates on Nigel's haircut. The progress is really inspirational. Also, the channel has come a long way. The old videos were great, but these days they are really polished and professional.
Thank you, I'm always trying to improve. I'm hoping to get a new camera some time into the future. I like this one!

The ficus now is awesome. Kudos to your patience and competence.
Thank you, lots of patience!
Love what you did with the ficus.
Thank you Betty, hopefully it will be a really nice tree some day!
Nice video Nigel. Your demonstration of different sized cans is actually helpful in deciding which one to buy and how to use them. And your trees....love them...very healthy and beautiful. Thanks for the video.
Regards.
Thank you Anita!
I'm becoming a regular at the local nurseries here in Sac but I haven't seen these styles of watering cans. One more item to add to my list: save rain water. I learned something new with the aerial root ficus. Thanks!
Thank you Vicki, I get my watering cans from here.....

Appreciated the watering can review. I started using the soda bottle watering with my orchids. I like it because it is a precise way to water. Your benjamina is looking great. It looks just like the old banyan trees that we have here in south Florida, USA. Thanks for such good, informative videos.
Thank you Patricia, some people poke a series of tiny holes into the bottle cap and it works well, similar to the bottle top watering system.
I'm just catalog all of your videos for winter. I have been so busy. I'd like to get a metal watering watering can but my plastic works just great. Awesome selection you got going on Nigel! Very "baller"
Thank you Dubsy, summer is always a busy time of year, so much to do in the world!
A couple of years later, the fusion ficus looks amazing!
I think it will look really good one day, maybe even better than it originally did!
AMAZING! Love it!
I do most of my watering with that watering bottle (bottle cap), thanks to your advice, a lot less water spills :).
It is a good way to water!
What is the brand of the water bottle spout?
Thanks Nigel the ficus looks great
Thank you Thys!
I agree with others, that the Ficus is great. However, the Scot's is a Phenomenal bonsai Now! I know you think it has years to go, but it has great character now, the movement, the flattop-esk, and the mound leading up to the trunk. I really have a taken a liking to that one, and has given me ideas. Thanks. I also am gonna find the original on that. Be well! Happy Spring.
Thank you, spring is in the air, but unfortunately so is the snow still!
Great work dada.Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching my son!
Great review on the watering can 👍.
Exactly what I have needed. Thank you so much!
Glad to be of help!
I like the project of this ficus - it is developing really interesting. Watching your video in the headphones and at 16:02 I thought a mosquito is flying near my ear hahaha
I had a listen, yes very scary!
The ficus is really looking good. The aerial roots are growing nicely.
Thank you, I think some day it will be a really nice tree!
I love your videos!
Thank you Su Pyrow!
I really enjoy the ficus tree. It has insparied me to try with my trunk fusion ficus religious. I have a cupple cuttings in water waiting till they have enough roots to try this.
It should work well with that species, they like to grow roots!
"Ahh, weed"!!... love your videos I am very new To this. And I am loving it! Thank you
Thank you Sara!
Ahh weed 😂 i love that also
I think your ficus benjamina has quite a few fans including myself.
One thing I've noticed with growing trees is they teach us patience. My oldest tree is a kaffir lime started from seed back in 2004.
Todd's Tropicals Hey Todd, could you please consider using makrut lime instead of kaffir lime? Highly offensive word that!
Jasper Shepherd Smith you know he's talking about a lime tree, he's not calling anybody that. The lime's name has a different origin.
I also want to get a Lime tree started this winter, it's nice to have a whole range of citrus trees! Thanks Todd!
Lovely your trees, especially their trunks! I have worked today at my Ficus Benjamina fusion project for thickening the trunk, but it is still a long way to go! Also, my money trees trunks (Pachira aquatica) are still looking dwarf, even if I have reduced the leaves size. It seems they don't like the sun and water as well, that is why I keep them in the room's shade.
Thank you, the money trees are difficult long term bonsai, but hopefully we'll slowly master the right techniques!
Beautiful stuff
Thank you Ghayath!
Fantastic!
Thank you C.A.R.
Hi Nigel, i love that bottle sprayer the best, for my small collection on the balcony but i do wish i could shower my plants. Congrats on your successful & miraculous ficus surgery ! I could not recall seeing a video on that but i see that you have added the playlist link to someone's comment. It would be helpful for your audience if it is updated in the description too. I am sure many would want to see the surgery but might have missed it. You are a Bonsai Surgeon / Bonsai Doctor :-) Once, those ficus roots thicken and fuse together with the main trunk, it will look really grand ! I love your collection in the tree documentaries playlist. Will watch them. Thanks !
Thank you Vinny, happy growing!
I have that small plastic Haws in the foreground. Really is the best watering can for bonsai.
It does work really well!
Make sure that all the tiny holes at the tip of that brass spout are unclogged. Sometimes debris can get in there and it won't be as effective.
Great video ! and thanks for going through your cans. I have the half liter can right now for my inside smaller tropicals and I have been saving for a larger one for my outdoor trees. I'm going to get the 2 liter as per your advise, you probably saved me money watching this! Great job on your Ficus! I'm wondering though if the roots would breath better with the tin foil ? But I like the idea of watching them grow through the clear wrap though....very cool!
The tin foil does keep the light away from the roots, but I think the plastic will keep more moisture in the root base. I'll keep checking the roots and see how they are doing.
Hello, I'm wondering what brand your bottle top watering system is. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
I need a better watering can, might have to look into one or two of these. Almost forgot about that ficus, it's looking fantastic though, the pine as well!
Thanks Kathy, I can highly recommend the 2 liter one!
I use the 5l and the copper ones. I am quite happy with the 5L - however, I don't like using them with the rose facing up. I find that the water jet is much more precise and focused with the rose facing down.
Thanks, maybe I need to try it again, I just got it recently at a garage sale.
impresionantes los prebonsais maestro
¡Gracias, mucho crecimiento y trabajo por hacer para el futuro!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone con sus manos seguro k tendran un gran futuro. gracias
loved it! great video!
i've been dying to find out the outcome of the ficus benjamina! it's looking amazing! thanks for sharing!
ps; it's "flahm-boh-yaan" from puerto rico. it has super vibrant, fiery flowers. :D
Thanks, I'll try and pronounce it better!
sir when you took out the tin foil and it's amazing to realize how good those root covered the old tree, seems like the new roots starting to blend themselves into the old trunk and after you have cleaned up all the extra soil, the whole trunk (old) and the new roots from the fused upper trunk look better and tidier than the original whole tree before the frost. i think you've created a much better looking new fused tree. when those new roots that covered the whole trunk started to thicken up and develop their barks, i think your ficus will look much more amazing than now. this whole fusion project did actually make your trunk to look much larger and more mature look. and the root flare look more natural. really curious to see how the tree will grows in the future. when those new roots started to develop their barks when they are thicken up, i think it will turned into a root base like one of your "ficus sister-fancy". i can't explain how much i like your "ficus sister-fancy" tree. the roots base is really amazing. i think this tree has his own history now. from one nice tree, to the half damaged tree due to frost, divided, and fused together again and developed into a much better looking tree. i really like to watch all of your trees. they are different from other people's bonsai. to me, i like your natural looking trees. i am currently planting my own ficus from cuttings. thanks for your great videos. keep updating.
Thank you Vince, I agree, I think the fusion Ficus will look better than the tree did originally! The next challenge will be to get the branch structure all sorted out. The fun never stops!
Hey Nigel! The Canadian fall/winter is coming up. Maybe make a video on how to care and prep our trees for changing seasons!
Fall is coming fast here, I had to bring all my tropical trees inside for the night as the temperature went down to 3 C this week. I'm hoping they can stay out until mid October. I keep a careful watch of the temperatures this time of year. I'll try and make a video on this subject. Thanks!
I love cans...especially when they 💦 water!
Bigger is not always better!
I love visible roots 😀
Me too!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone Is root over rock easily achieved with a chinese elm?
Keep going Nigel, I will do smilar thing to my benjamina
Thank you and I hope yours works well also!
Super video I really enjoyed it very much. Its also great you have your own brand The Bonsai Zone I just made my first bonsai video very excited I'm learning from the best. Look forward to your next Bonsai zone.
Thank you and thanks for your video!

Hi nigel... I remember seeing another smallest copper can in one of ur other videos....
Yes, most of my watering cans come from garage sales or second hand stores!
Another great vid,I have some of those cans myself.with being a beginner can you do some demos,to show how and when to style 3,4,year old seedlings for bonsai.especially Scots pine and black pine.i have about five growth at the top of these seedlings and do not know what to do
about them.i have tried reading about them but I can not fully understand what to do.thanks Charlie
I'll be doing some more work on my seedlings soon, and I think that would make a great video!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone thanks
I think the problem with the one litre can is that the holes on the spout are too small. Try enlarging them a little.
Once I had a big watering can that was painful to use until I decided to make the spout holes bigger.
Great video and great channel, btw. Cheers from Italy.
Thank you, great suggestion! My wife has taken over the large can, she really likes it!
Your linden tree seems to be doing well! I noticed it when you were using one of the watering cans. Will there be an update video on it any time soon?
The tree is doing well, it has been left to grow this summer, but it will need pruning this winter when it losses it's leaves. I'll make a video!
Hermoso
I do so enjoy your channel from way over in Trinidad in the Caribbean (not Jamaica). I came across the channel when searching for bonsai trees clubs, but couldn't find one locally. The flamboyant tree shown at the end is a great example of a tropical tree I would like to try. Its blooms are a fire bright red in bunches when found in the wild - at least in my country. Hence the name. Would you have any tips on how to care for them so they bloom as a bonsai?
Thank you, here is a site that might help.....
www.hunker.com/13428858/how-to-use-a-royal-poinciana-for-bonsai
Yay, Nigel!
Hello Durand, how grows it?
Dear mister Saunders .. do the can roses fit every type of watering can ? For example could you fit the 2L rose to the 1L can ? I am thinking that this way the issue that you have with the 1L can could be solved .. I am also looking to buy one but the 2L is too big and the 500 ml one I cannot find .. So for my appartment the 1L would be best, but only if the issue you also have is solved by interchanging the roses :) thank you
Another great video! When I wrap my ficus in foil like you did it has tendency to discolor the bark- did you notice that? Was there anything you did to prevent discoloration?
Once the bark is back into the sunlight, it will get back the normal colour and texture.
Nice bonsais
Thank you!
Hi Nigel, any update on the money tree that you pruned?
I want to send you some of my bonsai trees pictures.
thekwbonsaisociety@gmail.com
Hello Nigel!
I love your videos! You have inspired me to start bonsai trees with my husband. We're going for trees native to the tropics, as we live in Costa Rica, and we're also trying with trees from other parts of the world.
Do you think you could give some advice on growing bonsai indoors, without a lot of sunlight or space? We have a balcony in our apartment where my plants grow really well. But any tips or recommendations would be really appreciated.
Thank you so much!
Hello Czl, you may need an indoor lighting setup on a plant stand. Check out LA Nolan's video's, he grows his trees indoors with excellent results.
ua-cam.com/video/3-kZufZQCys/v-deo.html
Thank you so much!
The ficus tree looks amazing, you did an outstanding job Nigel! Thanks for showing all your cans, I have the smallest one and I love it, it works great for my tiny bonsai trees. I also ordered the bottle top watering device, after watching your video. Hey Nigel, can you recommend a good tree identification guide? I have been searching online for deciduous and evergreen (conifer) trees that grow in North America, I haven't found any publication yet that I like. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you M.K. I don't have a good book on North American trees, our library used to have a good one, but it's not there any more. I would try your local library or maybe someone else can suggest a good book on the subject?
Ok, I will try that, thanks Nigel. My collection of bonsai trees keeps growing, I will send you some pics!
Hey Nigel, I'm not sure if anyone has brought up this question before but here it goes! For collecting rain water for your trees what barrels do you use? Also do you have to treat the water with any chemicals or use any filters?
I get my barrels from a local auction they have every week. The barrels are from the food industry and contained olive or some kind of vegetable oil in them. I don't treat my water, it just runs off the roof of the house into the barrel. I do cover the tops of the barrels to keep sunlight and mosquitoes out. If the sun shines into the water, you will get algae form and it will clog your watering can.
Hey Nigel, great informative video as always! You have really gotten me into bonsai lately... I have planted a peach pit and Im hoping that i can follow your instruction well enough to have it grow for me! I have a question in regards to whether or not there are specific species that are more easily growable and better for a beginner bonsai enthusiast. I live in BC, so Im also wondering if any specific species do better here in this environment rather than your east coast deciduous environment..? Great video as always, much much MUCH love on the work and information you share with us.

I have a Peach tree growing in the backyard! It just started to grow all by itself and is now growing several peaches on it. Here is an article on growing Peach trees from seed.....

Sweet thanks for the help Nigel! I look forward to all the future videos :)
Thanx for the video Nigel, is there a video showing the mending of the ficus???
Nakia Gentry yes there is one
Here is the playlist for this tree....
ua-cam.com/play/PLQouTWwmTQow33hNUHMspuLIADinmz-mM.html
I had good luck getting multiple lower growths from starving the tree of light, making it stretch and then shoots sprouted out of the trunk
Thank you Mo, interesting technique, less light means the tree has to generate more leaves to produce sugars. I'll keep tying new techniques with the money tree, it's not an easy one to get to branch!
Could we get an update on the money tree? Thanks I enjoy the learning. Keep it up happy gardening!
It will need pruning soon, I'll be sure to post an update, thanks!
Was an update to the money tree ever made, been searching through vids but cant find it.
Where did you get your bonsai rake? I love it! Great vids 👍
How exactly did you get the money tree cutting to root. I have sofar not had much success with it. I put them in water abd kept them there for about 3 mounths. However only one cutting rooted sofar.
I placed mine in bonsai soil indoors and kept the tree misted and humid. I haven't tried a cutting in water.
--Would you mind updating us on this process in a few months?
--Do you have rules that you follow to determine where you cut your plant to produce the most viable cuttings?
-- Thank you!
could we get a full garden tour i would love to see everything even the stuff thats not even bonsai yet
I will have to do one bench at a time, it would be a long video if I talked about all my tree!
i would love that plus could i get some tips on how to make a nuresy stock into a bonsai please
I would like to see your collection as well, it would be nice to see them all. Perhaps a time lapse video and we could pause and you speak to anything that stands out to you.
may i ask how often do you water/mist the roots inside of the plastic cover? and how long do you have to water it before you can finally remove the plastic and exposed them? weeks/months?
The tree was kept in the greenhouse for the summer. I just made sure I watered it through the top hole in the plastic covering every day. I think the roots will be ready for the final un-covering this spring. I'll check in on them this winter and see how they are doing. I'll be sure to make a video.
Does the golden ratio apply to Bonsai cuts?
Do you know anywhere it is still possible to get the Haws 2 Litre can in Canada? I can't seem to find it anywhere!
Lee Valley tools has them!
www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/garden/water-and-irrigation/watering-cans/10412-haws-conservatory-can
@@TheBonsaiZone Thanks, I saw that they have it, but unfortunately they don't ship :(
Odd you chose this video for today, I planted ficus benjamina seeds today actually, why do you wrap the roots? Is that the only way to get the banyon look, its doesnt naturally do that?
In warm humid conditions a Ficus tree will naturally grow aerial roots. To speed the process up you can wrap plastic around the trunk to keep the humidity high.
The ficus with the roots growing down the tree looks amazing. Is there a way to do that with Junipers or evergreens?
You can do this with any tree, but the roots may not fuse together easily, like they do with a Ficus.
Thank you very much. I was thinking that it would look pretty good with a juniper atop a rock or some other structure.
What type of tree is the being watered by the metal watering can? It appears to be a redbud, but I could be wrong
That was a small leaf Linden tree, here is the playlist for this tree....
ua-cam.com/play/PLQouTWwmTQoxYAwz882v5mv7icnF4uUzx.html
Do you still use half turface half perlite for your bonsai soil?
Yes, I'm very happy with the mix, all is growing well!
You use collected rain water to water your trees? I'm assuming since you fill the cans from barrels
Yes, all my trees get hand watered with rain water and a small amount of fertilizer. It takes about 45 minutes to water all the trees and sometimes they need to be done several times a day. Here is my watering video....
ua-cam.com/video/gXIIpxUqxdY/v-deo.html
Nigel, I really like how you don't discriminate. Many people wouldn't touch a money tree for the issues you mention, and the same goes for willow. By the way, how is your willow tree doing?
The willows were allowed to grow all summer untouched. I wanted to build up the trunk size on both of them. I will be pruning them in a video soon before they come into the unheated part of the basement for the winter. The Willow trees are all doing well.
I'm Looking for the best way to recorde the Intro Music but my Smartphone microphone isnt the best
Some of the DSLR or video cameras have good microphones built in, maybe you can borrow one, I hope!
Hello sir, I have found a Ficus religiosa tree, it is growing on a wall and the house owner don't want it there, that tree is almost 8 feet tall & I want to make a bonsai from its trunk, it have only one large root which is uncollectable, so I have to make a cutting of it, can you please tell be how to root a large cutting like this one...
Be sure your cut is nice and clean, I would use a sharp saw. Plant the tree in a good free draining soil mix and keep the soil damp, but not wet. A clear plastic bag over the entire tree and pot will help keep the humidity in. Be sure to poke some ventilation holes in the bag so the tree doesn't get too hot. Keep the tree in a bright spot, but not in the direct afternoon sun. Mist it often.
Good luck!
Mr Saunders, my father sent me a coniferous tree from a local nursery and they said it was a pine tree but the needles are attached singly. however the needles aren't flat and are really long and thin (as thin as a sewing needle). I'm confused about which tree it is, can you help me identify it
Maybe this species if it is a tropical tree....
www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index.php?title=Casuarina
It may be also an Eastern White pine?
looks a lot like eastern white pine
I have the round rose on a 5L can.
I got my 5 liter at a garage sale, I'll have to look around for some different nozzles to try, thanks!
I poked holes inside of a bottle cap and it kinda acts like a watering can
We do that at the Local greenhouse, if you get the holes just right, it's as good as the ones you can buy!
Sir, do you have Sharimiki style bonsai tree ? I would love to see you demonstrate one :)
I don't have one on purpose, although my apple tree bonsai is slowly becoming more of a driftwood style. I will be growing my Tamarix into a desert driftwood style. I'll try and look for some suitable material for the future.
Thank you, Sir
What's the purpose of watering the tree tops? Just curious, as I've never seen anyone do it before.
Your foliage has pores. So they should be misted. Especially, if you don't want root rot. IMHO.
this is species specific tho, water on the leaves combined with sunlight in certain climates can ruin the leaves. where i am, i cant water the leaves on my oaks and maples during the day.
Misting the tops of your trees will help cool them on a hot day and it helps wash off dust and insects also!
Is there a difference in roses for water pattern
I haven't checked them both out yet!! I'll have to do a review!
I know your new can has quite the flow on it! Happy birthday btw
It sounds like you live near the Eby Farmstead.
We have both chickens and ducks, it's always fun at our house!
How can i send my plants pictures
You can email me at...
thekwbonsaisociety@gmail.com
the ficus looks like a real banyan tree that you might find in a jungle
Thank you, I try and make my trees look like miniatures of their full size counterparts!
Hi Nigel when did you change names from Kw Bonsai to Bonsai Zone ?
When I monetized my UA-cam channel this year, I decided to change from KW bonsai, which is a non profit bonsai society. I had to monetize the channel to allow me more time to devote to the channel and then spend less time working on my 3D computer graphics. I am still a proud member of the Kitchener Waterloo bonsai society!
Ah ok cool still love your way of doing Bonsai i am learning something every day
Just received confirmation from haws, the two liter conservatory can has been discontinued. Impossible to get now.
Sad news, I'd better buy some if I still can, thanks!
@@TheBonsaiZone good luck, if you find any please comment here and let me know. Uk and UK are plum out.
@@unclesham5507 You are right, I just checked, none available, not even on e bay!
@@TheBonsaiZone nope or Amazon, they are gone. Replaced by a 2 liter "english garden" can. Not the same design at all. I am hoping they will start producing them again eventually.
Do a bonsai tool review please
I really only have one set of tools, so I don't have much to compare them to, but I'll have a tool video coming soon on sharpening and restoration.
Where can it be purchased?
The watering cans can be bought from Lee Valley Tools....
www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?cat=2,2280&p=42608
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone thank you so much!
Why not turn the large can's nozzle about 180°? This might make it easier to handle.
Thanks, I'll try that!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I was gonna say that same thing, I been using the 5 litre for years, I point the nozzle the opposite way from you and I find I get great precision for my outdoor trees. It's way too awkward the way you showed it.
How many Bonsai trees do you have?
I think I have about 200 potted plants on the go!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone Wow, thanks for the prompt answer. And if you were to move to another location where you would only have place to take one, which one would you take?
Tough question, I think it would have to be my very first bonsai tree. I started it from a seed and is now over 25 years old. It is my Ficus microcarpa. It has a long way to go as a bonsai and I hope it stays with me to the end!
I just saw your ficus microcarpa video, update Nov. 2016. It's awesome. I didn't know you could grow them from seed. I knew that for example if a bird eats the seed, then it has more chance to grow once its outside of the bird.
Franken-Ficus!!!!!!
IT'S ALIVE!!!!! I think the tree will look really good some day, but it will have a lot of growing to do first.
skip to 5:44 if you dont feel like watching watering can reviews.
Have fun with the cans!
Chris Green You didn't understand my opinion regarding the watering. I find it very important too, cause I have problems with precision while watering bonsai, especially my indoor trees!
Nigel you know you are getting somewhere on UA-cam when you get timestamped comments for skipping to the point.
I like watching Nigel watering...😜
zuilok it makes me want to pee
U should consider being more active and make videos more often
I try and do the best I can, life can be very busy!
When you live in California and don't have any rainwater for your plants 😭
You can always buy the large refillable bottles of distilled water if it is within your budget. Tap water will work well for some areas, it all depends on the quality.
