- This Video is just a Sample of what this amazing Yamaha SY77 Synthesizer can do with the right FM Programming. I'm sure you'll love the rich sounds/Patches that shows up in this video. Most of the patches i programmed and others patches i found on the internet back in 1996.
Please click on the link below to access patches/sounds disk 1 of 13. Then open the file and save to diskette to load onto your Sy77 drive. Or Click on Converted folder once in Google drive and download Patches to use Midi interface in the sysex file format. Good luck and Have fun!!

Great instrument. It looked like a spaceship when it was introduced in very late '80s. I know these days these don't get as much appreciation, which is strange to say the least. I still love this instrument.
Cool thing is that it often comes cheaper than a DX7 but is is wayyyyyy better than the already great DX7! :-)
@@MrLawrence0071 Psst, don't tell nobody. Or you want to sell your one for more money than you paid for it?
SY77 / TG77 is in the top 3 digital synths of all time! Nice to see someone showing off the analog imitations instead of the usual FM Electric Pianos and sub-par PCM side. Use this synth in a lot of my music
Man in 1989 just came out I remember I had the choice between a VFX or sd-1/ 32*voice* getting this one tomorrow! 30 years later!!!! Can't wait!
Brian Adam congrats on your new older purchase... lol you’ll be amazed with this beast.
This video still rocks! Your playing is wondeful. What a classic synth, also for newer generations. Thank you for sharing. -Devin
Great work!
One day I'll get one of these and download your patches.
Bravo!
Your synth looks so great like a new, just from the music store. And sounds excellent.
Suzukisenpai yes, dust covers and smoke free home and studio and some live giging... also..a professional flight case..loving care make a difference in the synths cosmetic appearance over time. The Keybed is a little lacking in response because of age.
I have both the yamaha sy77 and the sy99. They are two treasures that never cease to amaze me with their infinite possibilities. But when I go to play with the band I avoid taking them with me because I don't want to risk them getting ruined.
Great demo Anthony showing off this fab classic synth! I've both '77 & '99 and they are a mainstay in my productions. Love the FM punch of those patches.Certainly will subscribe now and hopefully you'll find time to share your excellent programming work ... yes sounds very analogue at the beginning, good job. Best.
+the audio eng Thanks much for taking the time to comment. I plan on making a How-To video some day soon. I you have any tips please share them by adding a link to any of your video. Cheers!
Wonderful piece at 8:19! Perfect patch for it. Inspiring!
Great sounds. Has that magic that the DX7 has in its FM chips.
Acquired this beast for 150€, had a low battery warning. Spent 3h today to solder the new battery. Hadn't soldered anything for 30 years. It works! What a beast this thing is!
Hi Anthony! awesome!!! just awesome sounds matey!
I just picked up my sy77 for $150aus, yes it was a bargain! especially after seeing what it can do watching your vid. wow! now i just need to start programming! ha! wot a load of fun, late nights and tears that'll be... very inspiring! thankyou! out with the instruction manual yet again...
SY77 is one of the best boards out there. I've played most of the newer flagships like Motif and Kronos and V-Synth, as well as several VAs, at Guitar Center and Sam Ash, and there are very few sounds that my SY77, with the right programming and maybe an effects pedal or two, cannot emulate. Anthony, I too would very much appreciate these patches. :)
Very nice sounds. FM is awesome once you know what you're doing.
Was just given one of these just the other day. Local college had had it for years. Bought it for the Yamaha sound quality and just used it to accompany their vocal jazz ensemble. Not unlike getting a 911 Turbo and just using it to take the kid to school and back. lol
Nice sounding synth, I love the sounds, especially clavinet and e-piano
AWESOME DEMO ,Great Synth
Bought this synth recently.Cant wait to test these patches. ;)
Great! this synth is going to give you lots of creative fun!
Amazing sounds ! Very well chosen.
Indeed I will. And if course my major thanks to you. This board returning to my life after 22 plus years has pulled some major smiles out of my soul. Emptiness is scarce lately. And let me thank you with all my heart for your help. Yes. I ordered some midi to usb cords. I was hoping there was some kind of a way to transfer that way. I'm going to find an old computer as I think I have a couple in my dad's shed along with possibly a bunch of 3.5 diskettes. I'm here whenever you have an idea. Thanks my friend.
Ok. I need to see what I'm doing wrong. I can't remember how to set my voices I choose for my tracks in sequencer. It's staying on the same stock 4 tracks. Can you help? And my piano and strings voice is only playing piano sound. Thanks for any help.
Robert Clark I haven't set-up voices in a while for each track. I'll find my instruction manual and get back with ya! cheers... Stay tuned.........lol
Wonderful demo, beautiful sound programming and playing! Hey, my son is Anthony C., too! I have 77 and 99 and D-50. All are wonderful.
Young Choe great! Thanks for stopping by my channel. The Sy77 is a amazing synth. I had mine now for 26 years.
Oh, 26 years? I believe 77 was released around 89. Here is my story from 1989 or 1990. I was browsing in a Music Store/Yamaha dealership in Seoul, South Korea when I saw a big crowd in its demo room. Human wall indeed and I could only hear wonderful music played in various styles. So much so that, I was think probably a whole band was jamming. What was happening was the very 1st demo of SY77 in the country. My jaw dropped, there was just one keyboard (SY77) and one Japanese guy. That's all! He even claimed it was the world's most powerful synthesizer! My jaw dropped again when I heard the price :)
One of the best underrated synth. Very powerful. Need time to program it.
I own one of these. I can honestly say, as long as it works, I'll never get rid of it.
28 years ... and just lost the battery in mine. Was a sad day, all those presets, organized the way I liked them for playing shows. Gone ... years of tweaking. Wish I'd data dumped it to a computer before it happened, which I hadn't done in years since back when I had my home studio rigged up. Then, a lot of the recent tweaking was done along the way as I just played shows and made adjustments and small tweaks as I went. All of that is gone now, so don't make that mistake. Back it up, and get the battery replaced when it says low battery (which it said for about five years, ha.) But yes, I loved this keyboard. Back in the day, it cost me almost as much as a Nord stage 3 would now. Sad about that battery now though. Seems like a big job to have it replaced too. :(
Wonderful sounds.
I also have a TG77 which i love, one of the best digital synths ever!
Greetings.
Sotiris (Synthscape).
amazing chops and programming!
please check the Video description with link to sound/patches. containing disk 1 of 13 to come. Thanks
Great! A Purchase you won't regret. I'll keep ya in mind for future patch/sound uploads soon.
Wow! Had one of these maybe 25 years ago. in the late eighties. didn't know how to play but had fun with it anyway.
I have mine since 1990. I will NEVER sell it !! Nice demo dude!
I wouldn't sell mine no way in hell.... I almost sold it 18 years ago because I got caught in new Musical Gear Lust. Glad I wasn't a Victim of my own stupidity.
Anthony C 90’s are Back. My synth came back from a 15 years long sleep. I got a bunch of new gears, and they all have a singularity, a signature. I sold once a synth along time ago, I won’t do that again. All the best,
Had a mint SY77 & sold it.. Miss it dearly, thanks to patches like 0:55-1:37 lol. I don't think most ppl realize how close this board gets to analog as far as the warmth/tone. Then again, something about that FM synthesis always puts you in the same ballpark (at least to my ears). This is especially the case once filters are added. I had a TX7 once & with the exception of the non-existent filters, it gave me just as much warmth/tone as nearly any analog synth I had ever played. Nonetheless, 1 day i'll grab another, but really leaning towards the SY99 at this point (I have outgrown 61 keys unless i'm at the organ :-)
Google drive files are still available. Look for folders labeled converted files for midi and other file folders for diskette format for disk drive use. Good luck and enjoy. I'll be adding more patches/ sounds soon.
Just checked the down- link files myself. It seems to work on my end. Try it again when you get a chance. hope ya have better luck.
Good news! check out my video description and click on the download link for Sounds/patches disk 1 of 13. Enjoy!
Nice sounds - impressive all around.
I enjoy your responses. Thank you. It's just the fourth c key. All else seems ok. So I may get it. Take apart and blow it out. I hope it's not too hard. I read online it's usually a dusty contact I just don't want to tear it down. Lol hope it's not much work. Lol. Haven't tested the drive yet. And I do or will need more sounds. I'll look for a disk. And data cards. Haven't tried sequencer yet. Lots to remember. I do have the manual. Lol
Hi m8,
That sounded absolute beautifull
love the sound
Have a nice weekend
Regards Rico
Magnificent ... the sounds, the machine and the keyboard player. Hope try the shares files on my Sy99. Greetings. PR.
Great! Bass sound at 7:37 is very nice! :)
Awesome!!!, SY&TG77 are in my studio... 4ever ;-)
I like. As well the finger position, shape of the right hand. Left hand could as well be a more like "claw" like.
These patches are really...and I mean REALLY...good.
You can do both. computer midi set-up or Floppy drive. If you do a search on google and search for Yamaha sy77 files format, look for freeware to use the midi to load back the patches using a computer. its a long learning process but it can be done with a little patients. Good luck mate! hope i helped a little.
Once you understand FM programming you can achieve all sorts of sounds. Ive got a DX7 and managed to get a bit of analog sounds on some brass or string patches.
Alot of the digital synths sound analogies these days!! When they first came out I thought they sounded Tinny!!
sounds good! looking forward to sharing some patches wi th you also.
Sure will. Getting lots of request. hope to have all the patches organized and easy for musicians to load. I'll keep ya posted.
@3:53 Love that square sound so much !:)
Hello Anthony,
Big sounds, fantastic !
Yes, sysex, sysex !!! ;-)
+Christine Boutchou So I take it you downloaded patch file from my google online cloud drive and use the software to convert? Hope so! if so... Glad you are enjoying the Patches!
sounds nice!
I like how those buttons on the end remind me of my old PSR. I just did some research and the psr I had when I was younger doesn't exist. I must be from a parallel universe of some sort. lol
EXCELLENT SOUNDS
Yes, great patches/Sounds. Its one sweet Synth for sure! Thanks for taking' a listen.
I had one of these and I sold the darned thing. Wish I had kept it as I did some of my best stuff with it! It was even better than the Korg 01/w in some ways.
Yes, I know what you mean. Almost sold mine back in the late 90's. Well, repurchase if you do so desire. You might find a great price. One never knows. Cheers!
Yes same here bro..I do the same tutorials when I flash smartphones and repairs. Now I'm back to music I'll surely do videos and such to help others in same predicament. But I hope all is good. I was told guitar center checks over 100% on used gear but you know how that goes. Lol. Plus I bought a one year replacement warranty. Might even add two more years. Why not right?? Lol. Still excited. But now I'm seeing if I have what I need for playing her when she arrives. My son has tons of amps and guitars. So I bought everything he has over the years but his bass rig he never uses so if I'm not mistaken the standard cable should work via base amp right? Sorry it's been years. Lol. I'm a drummer but still looking for a kit. Anyway I think the base amp is Peavy like new ..Ok I checked it. It's a Rumble 60 Peavy bass cab.
I'm getting flavours and influences of Ultravox, Asia, Marillion, Genesis. Tasty!
Anthony!!!? Wow!! Words cannot describe. I bought this board new in 90 I believe. I was in a wreck. Used some money from suit to pay cash for this brand new for 2995. Lol I just found one as I traded it sadly as I was 19 then and a good drummer. So I traded it for a pearl all birtch shell series kit loaded.
Anyway I found on line one while shopping to start writing again after 20 years easy. 349 I'm so happy. Can't wait for it to arrive.
I'm glad it's still being used. It was impressive back then. I really only used it for sequencer. But Damn. I hope I can find some things to add. For when I receive it from shipping. Like the disc's. And more sounds. I remember it actually could make sounds from scratch. In a sense it should never get out dated in the sound department. Anyway I hope you may be able to shed light on what I can use for more sounds from over the years like pads and atmospheric sounds. I'm into atmospheric blues. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sy77
Yes, I remember my excitement when i got my sy77 for $2400 in 1991. I wanted to sell my sy77 around 2001 or so....I thought it was really outdated. Glad i didn't get around to selling it. Now, after a little more education and learning basic synth programming...15 years later. I realized that i purchased a great sounding and programmable synth. Anyway, Glad you got a good deal with repurchasing the Sy77. I have a boat load of patches and i'll be sharing them in the future. Have fun making music! Upload a video of your performance when you the chance.
Good sound just bought one cant way creating sound Bravo
Still an incredible synth, even after 20+ years. I've owned a TG-77 for a long time, recently I traded my DX7-IID for a SY-77, layered together they are simply FM heaven.
I LOVE the DX7-II !!!! See one hovering around online as we speak, might have to snatch it up lol
***** I fought with myself for awhile on trading my DX-7, but in the end I just had to have the SY. While the DX-7II can't top the 77 it is still a fantastic board, I'm thinking about getting another one just to have.
Yes, I believe it does. How funny. Thats what ya get for improvising on the fly!
Love it! Just picked up one of these myself. Thanks for sounds and thanks for the vid. :D
P.S. have you had any luck performing a Factory reset? Yamaha's page says to hold [voice] then [bank d] and [8]. Then it should enter test mode and you can restore sounds by pressing [copy]. Cant get that to work on mine at all. Not a priority since I've got lots of sounds for it but thought I'd ask anyway. thx
Wow, sounds really great. The effects are from the same unit? Nice demo :))
Impressive sounds! I have one for sale pretty cheap near me and I'm tempted..
TheArchiveOfWonder go for it. My Yamaha is in mint shape. Needs internal battery. New display screen in future.
Yes, I would recommend.
Wow. It started working. Lol. Got it. Now if I only had some disks with patches on them. I'd pay a pretty penny.
HI There Sy77 man! yes, if you have access to an older computer which uses 3.5 diskettes, I set-up a google share drive account with files containing 500 patches waiting for the taking.... In my above Video Description, there is a link of about 128 patches. click on this link and download the file and save that file to a 3.5 diskette. I'm also experimenting with freeware that transfers files using a midi interface. Hope to have that set-up this summer. I'll keep ya informed! Have fun with The Sy77 in the mean time. cheers!
Thanks a million
Great sounds....:)
Hi, great sounding voices!!
One question: working under OSX is it possible to send these patches via SysEx Librarian?
Very nice sounds. It's great that you're sharing them. BTW, do these sounds utilize AFM, (FM synthesis) AWM2, (internal/ROM card waveforms) or are they comprised of a mix of both?
I believe a combination of both. AWM2 and AFM. using all elements.
Hey: does anyone know where i could purchase voice data/wave form cards for the Sy55. My internal sounds wont all play without an error message saying a card is needed!!!!
Yes, I know what you mean. This Yamaha SY77 is one of the most complicated around to program. Lots of menu systems. That's why 20 years ago, i purchased a book that helps explain all that is possible with his Synth.
Which book are you talking about? I am curious since i want to learn the sound design of this thing to the fullest.
@@janpieternieman5295 … it a program manual can’t remember the name… I’ll let you know once I find the book.
@@acaruso36 I am also interested about what book it could be. Thank you for sharing this great video. -Devin
@@devingademan Yes, i misplaced the book or Manual I'm afraid... Need to do some house cleaning.lol
@@acaruso36 Yamaha Sound Making Book Level 1, maybe? 😃
excellent video, superb sound and playing.
Would you recomment this as a first synthesiser?
I'm not surprised that these synthesizers (the FM sound and specifically the Yamaha DXs) unseat the analogue market on its day (mid 80s). These synthesizers can sound thin, fat, cold, warm, bright, dark , sweet, punchy... and make many other sounds that an analog could never do.
This thing sounds amazing.
yieldsigns yes.. not bad for a 1990 digital synth.
Anthony C Well, I have a feeling your playing had something to do with it. Considered buying one for 300$ on Craigslist recently but had no idea if that was a reasonable price and I'm just a plunker so it would never sound as good as this.
yieldsigns well, $300.00 is a steal. It seems the Yamaha SY77 is getting a little hard to find. Newer Keyboard players are catching on to this amazing synth popularity and again using this synth in their music productions.
Anthony C Does a non-functional floppy drive explain the price? It seems like there are ways around that, these days.
yieldsigns it can effect price. But the drive is most likely repairable and midi control and software would give it a quick fix. I fixed my drive and replaced internal memory battery so I’m good to go.for a while. Might have to replace lcd screen soon.
i have both..they are way different. The SY77 has filters and is super super expensive sounding/hifi (the SY99 slightly more so). the sy22 is really limited and grritty but that's what makes it charming.
Listening in 2021. Still cool!
In some regards more powerful than the newest Montage. That is in the much more flexible FM Section.
3 allocatable Feedback Loops.
Using the AWM sounds, especially like the "basic analog" ones like square, saw, as an additional Operator, was completely outstanding.
And with software, you could get any algorithm, you wanted.
Montage is much more consumer orientated; it does play the stock DX7 sounds as well, directly, without conversion.
The AWM section of the SY77/99 is though very basic. It does have the needed single Waves to do these interactions, and a couple of other lengthy ones to rival a Korg M1, but then that's it.
A Motif or Montage has much more, because you need memory chips for samples.
My first SY77 was sold to Waylon Jennings. Back then the SY was my master synth along with a D50 and Supernova. Loved it but fell in love with the EX5 soon after and that ran my rig for a while. Now I missed the SY and have sold the EX, and just bought and refurbished a TG77 with an awesome new OLED display, and will probably add an EX5r soon too, just for old time sake.
Who is Waylon Jennings?
@@theeltea seriously .
@@theeltea Waylon Jennings is the Chuck Norris of American Country music. Waylon Jennings makes guitars go out of tune and microphones feedback just by looking at them.
hurricanes get scared of Waylon Jennings
@@youthmanrecords965 Thank you, I am sorry for my ignorance.
Great sounding patches Anthony!
Any chance of getting these as sysex files, so they can load into my TG77?
+Simon Matele sorry.not at the moment... future project taking all my extra time right now. Subscribe and hope i can start sharing and adding a how to video.
OK will do. I'm going to send emails with the files when i can find time to turn on My old computer and organize the files. it might take a while. Thanks
Wow..Thank you so much. I was close to buying the mox6 for 749 used. But I think I did better with sy77. I'll be open to any suggestions on other boards of today. Thank you so much Anthony. Please. Keep in touch. And yes I do want the patches. I never got too deep into the sy77 as I mainly just used sequencer. But. I'm going to study every inch. Btw can you tell me where to buy parts like battery for lcd etc, you know things that may go out?? Thank you so much.
Yes, So many choices. But by now, we both know that we purchased a great sounding keyboard for the money. About parts and LCD... batteries,... Found some good ebay auctions for replacement of my disk drive belt. I'll go back and find the seller for you when i have time. LCD still going Strong... now, i need to replace my internal Backup battery. my next replacement project. I opened up the keyboard myself and just used basic tools and took my time. That was it! Yes, Keep in touch! Take care! maybe in a few weeks i'll do a tutorial Video on How to... and stuff when time allows.
I'll have to look into it for sure. The Memory maybe the only factor between the two synths and a few wave tables not 100% sure.
can you stack voices/ microtune like the DX7mkii?
Awesome sounds! Any chance of getting the patch downloads? Thanks!
Fuuuuuck man! This mother sounds AWESOME!
I am having an issue with my Tg'77. I can get sound when in multil but nothning when i am in voice mode. Any idea what i am not doing right? Thanks
could you make a video showing how yo make sounds on th sy77
actually their quite different. sy22 offers vector synthesis wich can take sounds to weird places. sy77 on the other hand is more fm and sampling play back oriented. both are very nice machines, it all depends what you want to do with them,
look how clean that thing is !
I know... a little OCD when it comes to a clean 23 year old synth. Looks like brand new. that's how i like it! LOL
its tough to find a second hand synth of that age in that condition... are you the original owner?
I am the Original Owner. I even did lots of gigs with this thing and I always had a protective case for it.
Hi Anthony! You provided a link to just Disk 1 from your Google Drive. Could you provide the others (Disk 2-13)?
TIA! =)
From5:00 it sounded very similar to my old Yamaha An1x which was analogue modeled synth
How different is actually the sound from a SY22? Could you make a comparison?
Thank you!
I love the SY77!
Are you also a Ham Radio operator? It'd be awesome if you actually broadcast you synth skills on your radio haha
I'll have to do more research on this file format. I'm guessing its a basic midi interface file sharing between keyboards and software? i'll get back with ya. The files i'm sharing in the link above the video description...These files are copied right from my 3.5 disk which i insert in the Sy77 to access my sound banks. Maybe all you need is change the file extension from .T01 To .Sysex?
Will do. I'm happy to share the patches with you. Once i have access to my older Computer that uses 3.5 disks, I can send the patches to you or send you email or i can send a link to download the sound/patch sets. Also, finding the patch list i used for this video might take a little time to find them from my extensive patch list. Take care!
Hi Anthony. A friend of mine changed the battery in his sy77 and lost all of his sounds. I was just wondering if there was a way to load sounds via midi from his computer or does he have to do it by floppy? I need your help mate
Hey, I like your idea of using LED vs. LCD. Is the LED brighter? Can you recommend an online seller of a 240x64 LED display? I am opening my SY77 next week to replace the floppy belt & battery, and I might like to install a new display, if I locate one. Thanks.
I'll have to research my video files and find out the name of the patch/sound and get back with you. Once i find the patch/sound file, i maybe able to email you the patches. I'm hoping in the future I'll have a download site for people to enjoy my edited patches. Thanks for watching and stopping by to take a listen to this great synth.
Hi Anthony, thats cool! But can you add SYSEX of your sounds? I fear that my TG77 wont have any 3,5". Just send your Data to a PC with MIDOX (freeware). That would be very cool. Thanks
hi what that song u r playing at 8;21 and the one at 9.10 I heard them b4 but can't remember where cheers :)
I had to make do with a TG55 and a TG22 back in the day. Couldn't afford this monster! :-)
Yes , i remember paying like $2300.00 out the door for this thing. more like $3800.00 dollars now ... I was broke for at least 18 months when i finally paid it off.
Do you still have the files for these patches? The Google Drive link is requesting permission to download.
So SY77 has both AWM2 and FM?
the one at 8.21 sounds like night court theme??
Anthony, do you ever find your SY77 lacking oomph at the bottom end? That's my only complaint with mine.
