  • 1944 #mauserk98 at the range up to 300m with open sights. Its an incredible piece of history and I feel privileged as an American for this freedom to enjoy it. Only country on Earth with such liberties. #mauser #k98k #8mmrifle #germanrifle

These German rifles are MILITARY rifles. The whole point was never for the infantry to use these as pinpoint sniper rifles. Generally even with WW2 spec loads @ 196 grain with 42 grains of the flake type stuff the Germans used, the rounds will still typically hit 4-6 inches high from point of aim. The training manuals from the time tell you to aim at a man’s belt line to get a hit on his center of mass depending on the distance to target.
The Germans also serialized every single part of the rifle with waffenamps (the little eagles) and numbers. Counterfeiters also generally don’t fake serial numbers below the wood line, a good place to check is on the barrel action receiver when you take this thing apart. The underaide bolt handle is also a good place to check to see if serial numbers match.
Also that front sight hood was introduced after the first rounds of kar98s were issued for troops. They realized the front sight was getting bent by people dropping them in training/combat, so the sight hoods were issued out to protect the sight blade from general damage.

Really good info. I think this cartridge was overkill for infantry. But they fought with the MG, not the infantry in line. The squad was protection and feeding of the MG.

Yeah, they don't want those rifles stolen and sold for their historical value.

What is he on about, “the hood shouldn’t be there!”

I think the hood is a protection device for the front sight post and not intended for combat. Just my thoughts. What's your take?

The hood is fitted at the factory and stays on throughout its life!
There are many, many combat photos and newsreels!
      They’re a bugger to fit!

@@peteramodiohard to fit, but I found it harder to acquire the target with the hood ON

And it’s got numbers on everything!
    It’s European!

Yes, but statistically, it shouldn't. It's not how they were brought from Europe, or from the Russians.
