When Tobias Harris joined the 76ers at the 2019 trade deadline, he was averaging 21 points while knocking down 43 percent of his threes at 26 years old.
The Sixers assumed they weren’t landing names like Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant, so they went for the next-best scorer on the market, which happened to be Harris.
But they didn't have to give him that contract. No other team would've. Brand severely overpaid for no reason...

With Jimmy and Embiid plus cap space they wouldn't need Harden. They would have been able to put up a decent roster around those two to compete for the championship. Now if we talk about Markelle, that was very hard to predict. The kid was looking fantastic in college before that weird injury messed up his shot

@@2007NissanAltima KAT has had more playoff success than TMac already as he never lead a team past the first round, he’s more efficient from everywhere on the court, and he’s maybe 3-4 years away from passing all of TMac’s all time numbers lol. If they win a ring this year it’s definitive.

Jimmy Butler didn’t want to come back though
I was actually sort of going to defend him. It was a contract year, but his numbers were amazing on the Clippers. He still is putting up solid numbers too. After game 6 though, 2 shots in a closeout game going 0-2 0pts 4rep 3ast. Yeah, you can't win with that. When Buddy Hield comes off the bench and has not played all series and puts up 20pts and 35yr old Battum gets 16, that's a problem.
I had him in fantasy basketball this year and don’t let his stats fool you, he was terrible in about 90 percent of the games

Among all the stupid/crazy/unlucky decision the Sixers made throughout the Embiid era, giving Tobias a max contract was probably the worst of them. And that's saying something !

Here’s the problem with Tobias Harris, he was good back when he was with the clippers because the league didn’t have a lot of PFs like him that could shoot the 3, but as time went on, more players like him came in to the league who could shoot more efficiently, and suddenly his greatest strength became a mediocre talent. His 3 PT shooting also seems to have gotten slightly worse the last couple years, I think people forget that it was his 3 ball on top of his other abilities that put him on the map, Tobias Harris is a great value Paolo Banchero who’s lost his athleticism.

I disagree that his problem is not having a bag. His problem is not being aggressive enough. He doesn’t need crazy combo moves to get a good shot. He’s usually guarded by someone slower/smaller/weaker than him. He could get good looks with very simple moves. I think he’s the type of guy that is so concerned with his efficiency numbers that he turns down opportunities.

The NBA is crazy right now. There are average to above average players getting paid max stacks because the team can't afford to lose an asset for nothing and if the team is over the soft cap that's an asset that they can't replace. With the new tiers and what is essentially a hard cap in place, the NBA needs to let teams have an exemption in the salary cap for letting a player walk and not being forced to over pay them or lose them for nothing. Tobias Harris isn't a bad player. He's just not a super star and shouldn't be making super star money. If the 76ers paid him $20 million a year, nobody would be upset with this guy. I don't see any point to having a soft cap, a semi hard cap tier, and a harder cap tier. It's needlessly over complicated. Get rid of the soft cap, keep the tiers and let teams actually spend their money wisely.

A week after this video went out, Tobias Harris dropped his worst game ever as a Sixer (and maybe his career?) shooting a bagel in "helping" his team get eliminated in the first round. If he was intending to get a dud on his way out, mission accomplished Tobias.
I love Jimmy, but the "Harris over me?" quote by Jimmy is some delicious revisionist history. Jimmy outright refused a max contract because the Sixers wouldn't fire Brett Brown and because he didn't like Ben Simmons' attitude. Not excusing Harris' anchor deal. Harris was only worth about $20 mil a year, not $35 mil.
