Thanks, I replaced mine with the Delta part (RP5649-3) and it's working fine. One suggestion for others who are beginners like me: make sure the push valve moves freely before you install it. On mine the shaft holding the black valve was rotated slightly from its proper position. Moving it slightly around its axis with finger pressure freed it up. Then everything went smoothly.
Thank you so much for this! I recently bought a house that was built in 1982. This is the exact faucet setup it has, and of course it looks like it’s the original from when the house was built. I would like a more updated setup, but since I don’t know what will fit (and I’m not a plumber), I’m so glad you’ve shown how to fix this! At least I can clean it up and replace the broken diverter :-)
Thank you! This was very helpful. Our diverter popped out this morning before I had to go to work and my dad was being dramatic saying we had to replace the whole unit. I’m like hold up, let me see what I can do lol let’s not be spending pointless money in this economy
Perfect instructions! I fixed it with your help! Thank you! if a dumb ass like me can do it then anyone can after watching this video. 10-15 minutes max😃
Thank you James Exactly the job I need to doMy diverter nut is right against the plastic or fiberglass for the shower I see the thin wall wrench helps for that, Appreciate it much
My diverter just broke and is shooting water out when on. Stressed and wondering how much will a plumber charge to fix it? I can not thank you enough for the help. I can buy these tools and fix the issue myself. Thank you!
Don't have stem wrenches? If you're a car person, you may have an Oxygen Sensor Socket on hand. If so, it is the same size that is needed to remove the diverter, 7/8". (But you'll probably have to cut away some of the fiberglass below the diverter for it to fit.)
If the replacement was not a genuine Delta replacement part (after market) some times it will do that. Or it might be the inside of the valve body has worn out allowing water to seep past the diverter.
James The Plumber could you fix that valve body through the front of the shower or would you have to cut through the wall behind the shower to get to it?
After trying to solve the problem of water leaking through the bottom faucet after diverter replacement, it occurred to me that the paddle may be slightly different. I had bought a Danco 80971, which was said to be a replacement for the Delta. Carefully comparing the paddles, the Danco was slightly longer and a ridge crossed the paddle's raised disk-shaped plateau. I sanded down the paddle length matching the original shape and removed the ridge. Viola!
Take it back apart and make sure there is nothing broken off inside from the old diverter. If you still have the same problem the inside sleeve that the diverter slides into is probably worn out. Delta sells a conversation kit which will allow you to plug off where the diverter goes. Comes with an escutcheon cover without the hole in it. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at 9102374427 maybe I can walk you through it.
Is it possible to replace a push button diverter system like this with a more traditional system where the diverter is on the faucet? I’m looking to update my shower tub.
There are two ways to do it. One is totally replacing the valve inside the wall. Which if you're not very handy I would recommend a professional. Two, you can purchase a Delta diverter plug model#RP2865 and Delta Faucet Shower Handle Renovation Repair Trim Kit for Delta 600 Series Tub and Shower Trim Kits, Chrome RP54870. You will also need a new tub spout with diverter. Always be careful when trying to remove the bonnet nut on the front of the faucet control.
Can you share the Delta model # of the single handle diverter System as the unit you worked is same as mine and I need to locate the "Cap Assembly with Adjusting Ring" assembly part that holds in the Stainless Steel Ball Assembly. My version of the ""Cap Assembly with Adjusting Ring" has grip lines for a tool to grap to screw left to open. My was on for 30 years, then I needed to replace the (2 Seats & 2 Springs) and ball assemble as a small leak occurred. I damaged the "Ring" getting it off. I did get it back on but now very hard to move the single handle. The leak is now stopped. But would like to replace the Adjusting ring. Thanks
Thanks James for the informative video. I had to push in the diverter to get the threads started and now it appears I have cross threaded the new diverter into the valve assembly. Can the internal threads be chased and still seat the new diverter? Help!
I have never come across a situation where the threads were crossed. All I can say is give it a try. If it doesn't work then the bad news is that you will have to replace the complete faucet in the wall.
James, if we want to upgrade our faucet, how do we do so if the one we want does not have the push diverter but our current faucet is identical to the one in this video?
There's several ways to go about upgrading your tub fixture. It would be easier for me to explain if I had more information. Feel free to contact me at 9102374427
Hey James I replaced the push button stem but when I push it in water still comes out the bottom faucet. What am I doin wrong? How can i remedy this problem?
hey thanks much. One question: since the diverter is up there, how does the tub faucet come off? Is it held on with threaded copper? Just twist it off with a pipe wrench? There's no bolt keying it in like most tub faucets.
Don't use a pipe wrench unless that's all you have. I reccomend a 12" channel locks. Be careful either way, if the spout is stuck or seized the copper pipe will twist and possibly break off in the wall. If you have a propane torch you can heat the bottom front of the spout up a little bit to help free it up. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me at 9102374427
Hi James great video. I have the same one to replace and none of my hex sockets in my expensive set could reach the hex shape that is a bit smaller than 7/8". May I ask where I can get this socket that you use ?
I had a problem with the repair as well, but in my case the repair mostly works. I used a replacement from a third party purchased at the local hardware store. The replacement works as designed, but a stream of water still comes from the bath faucet while the shower head is full blast. Is this something wrong with the shower head like it was for Susan?
If the replacement was not a genuine Delta replacement part (after market) some times it will do that. Or it might be the inside of the valve body has worn out some allowing water to seep past the diverter.
Hey James I have this same setup and used your video to replace the valve thinking that was causing my problem. The install was easy but unfortunately didn’t fix my issue. I have water coming out the faucet and shower when the valve is depressed. It’s like half and half when trying to take a shower. Any suggestions on what may be causing my issue?

Mine was shooting water out while shower running. I replaced the diverter with the genuine delta, but it still leaks, just not shooting out. Instead, it drips out. I'm worried that some of that water is going back into the wall...did I do something wrong or should I buy another one? Maybe the one I got is bad? Is the paddle supposed to be loose? It wiggles a bit.
If you think it might be leaking in the wall, take off the cover and turn it on to check. Where do you see water leaking? If you have any questions you can call me at 910-237-4427
@@jamestheplumber2653 Its leaking out the button. It's not really going behind the cover as far as I can tell. It was shooting water out before, cause the paddle was broken off. Hey another video post mentions to inspect the inside of the diverter chamber for any gunk or broken parts before installing the new pin diverter👍
If I pulled out the old diverter and it was in pieces then I would have mentioned that as well.
Thank you for the video. You made look easy so off to Home Depot I go and I hope my valve is as simple as the one in your video.

For those still wondering...you do NOT have to turn the water supply off to switch out a diverter. I repeat...DO NOT
Thanks for telling them because some people don't listen well.

Home Depot or Lowes should have them in the plumbing section. It's called a faucet stem removal tool comes in a set of five sockets.
