    Yes, Spencer Haywood had game. In 1968 while serving in Vietnam with the US Air Force was the first time I heard about Spencer and what he accomplished for our country in the 1968 Olympics. I highly people to read about Spencer Haywood life. I am also happy to see him get into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Well deserved.

    A very profound and emotional speech. Like Mr. Haywood, I'm the son of a hard-working Mississippian. I understood Mr. Haywood's challenging upbringing in Jim crow Mississippi.

    Charles Barkley was on the stage with Spencer because he vouched for Spencer for years to get him in the hall of fame.

      +elwin38 Probably, since Charles was a bit of a rebel himself. But Charles was more dedicated to the game and success also.

      And man did he have game, at 6'8" he could do it all shoot, rebound, drive to the basket, defend. I can't really think of no one with his all around game, playing today.

    Such a well spoken person who obviously had great talent as a player.

    • @Amick44
      @Amick44 9 років тому

      +Antbeast23 He was a smart guy in some ways and did stand up for what he believed. Unfortunately, he was not so dedicated to his team, and seemed to let other "issues" get in the way of reaching his potential. Drugs, rebellious attitude, lawsuits, contract issues, etc. Known for non basketball matters as well as not.

    The U.S. was not expected to win gold in the 1968 Olympics, especially when few college stars turned out for the team. But the U.S. was carried to gold by a teenage junior college player named Spencer Haywood.

    As a kid growing up and seeing him play in the Olympics was beyond amazing and then I was done with hs in 69 .. The great guy played for the sonics and did everything in Seattle.. He played 5 years there and the team could of traded him for 5-6 great players back then. Later Spencer won a Ring with magic, and .Kareem with the lakers in 1980. Spencer was so quick with great hands and strength to shot, rebound and defend.. Just think Spencer changed the rules of the NBA…. He went all the way to the Supreme Court…Because of him players can play at a younger age.. Yay.. As a kid from Washington it was great to see him play.. He was one of a kind player. Kind of like Cooper Cupp. Yay..

    I saw Spencer play 2 times in person, both at the Palestra in Philly. First time he had 42 points and 32 rebounds against LaSalle and All American Ken Durrett. Spencer was unreal that night. Next time he went against Villanova and its All American Howard Porter. Villanova beat Detroit by 15+ points and Spencer didnt do too well against Howard Porter. Porter had 28 points and 15 boards and Spencer had 15 points , and 16 rebound. It was great to see Spencer in the Palestra. Congrads on the HOF

    Spencer Haywood did have game. I remember him in the 1968 Olympics and during his ABA days. He did put up some numbers. His career in New York was one of unfulfilled promises, in part because he came right after three future Hall of Famers retired, namely Willis Reed, Jerry Lucas, and Dave DeBusschere. Haywood was young, the expectations were high, and the pressure of the New York City nightlife was a major distraction. How different his career might have been had he played with a veteran like Reed.

    The NBA and NCAA basketball still have a ax to grind with this man because he was responsible for the one and done and college basketball players leaving early for the NBA. Why is basketball, football and hockey the only jobs where you can’t decide who and where you want to work? The draft should be eliminated. If the military abolished the draft, why not professional sports teams.

    Never reached his potential. Always had other "agendas." Beating the establishment, never satisfied with his contract, left each previous team in a rubble. Excellent talent, for sure, but not really a guy you want to build around or even have on your team. It would have taken a very strong coach to rein him in. Too bad.

      his rook year in fast and loose denver ABA was probably his NBA potential stat-wise- 30 and 19.5. maybe even more than his real nba potential as 20 glasses a night is a ton and 45.3 MPG not sustainable. too bad he went to die on the nicks and in that pit NYC lol

    He was a great player in the 70s, but sadly he's gonna be remembered for his drug use and being kicked off the 1980s Lakers team that won a championship. At least the good thing is she be drug addiction and got into the Hall of Fame..
