I love obsidian, alltough it's not that known (yet), I never thought I would find bible connected stuff with Obsidian. Keep the great stuff up! God bless!
My (admittedly biased) perspective seems to be that it’s growing in popularity a lot recently. Especially with slightly nerdy people. Sure it’s not the same level as Evernote or even Notion but it seems to be growing. Thanks for the encouragement! I’ve got some videos planned and I’ve started collaborating with some other Christian obsidian users on some exciting stuff!
Love these ideas - thank you for sharing. It's great to find other using the "second brain" to learn about God and to see new ideas on how to go about it. I've just started using Logseq (a free outliner similar to Roam) which uses Markdown too - investigating how to format the Bible in a way that works well with that format. I'm also looking at using Spaced Repetition (built into Logseq and a plugin for Obsidian) to improve my recall of important Biblical information.
Wow that sounds very interesting. Are you using logseq as well as obsidian (for different purposes). One of the ideas that I’ve found interesting is “authentic spaced repetition” where we don’t use one of these tools that reminds us of certain points but instead we try to explore a topic or concept deeper or more broadly and re-encounter ideas that way. Not perfect for definitions (or bible verse memorisation) but better for connecting and applying.
Hello Chris, thank you for sharing. I tried to understand how to install other versions of the Bible in obsidian. For me it is a stumble block. Could you please show how to do it?
I am brand new to Obsidian (and have to literally rewind and pause many times to watch how you open different screens, etc.). I guess I will have to look elsewhere for sorting out the bare bones/basics of Obsidian. In the meantime, when do you use tags, as opposed to links? How about making notes from books, sermons, etc., that don't originate with a particular Bible verse, but a theme? Do you create a theme-based note? If so, how many bullets would you include in one note? I can see my theme-based notes getting way too long..... If you have other videos addressing these things, can you please point me in the right direction?
So many great questions include some I’d not considered! I do have a video on links vs tags. I’ll send some more resource tomorrow (it’s late here and I just saw this) or I can send you more specific things if you email me chris@cjwilson.co.uk
I’m new to obsidian and I recently found your channel. I’m also a Christian and never thought to use obsidian for Bible notes. Sorry if you explain this in another video, but do you have the whole Bible in obsidian? How did you do that? It’s neat. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Eunice. No problem at all. I do have a plain text version of the Bible imported into my system and you can see how I set it up (and get links to resources) in this video ua-cam.com/video/kT4g59YCbd0/v-deo.html . I hope that helps. Feel free to send me another message if you have any additional questions.
Thanks for these videos Chris. I have been trying to figure out the best way to handle Bible references. So far I have landed on tags, using Obsidian's nested tags feature (eg. #Bible/Isa/61/v1). This allows me to get down to the verse level. I know you could do that with Joschua's system that you use by linking to a specific verse ( [[Gen-01#v1]]), but the backlinks pane isn't the best at showing what is linked to a particular verse -- Obsidian just divides heading references with a horizontal line (which is better than nothing). I was also thinking about how this system would handle verse ranges -- say if I wanted to link to Isa 61:1-4. The only way would be to link to each individual heading, wchich would be ridiculous, especially if you want to link to an entire paragraph. I would love to hear your thoughts about the best way to handle verse references! My tags are working well enough for now but I do love the idea of having pages for each chapter that you link to, as in your/Joschua's system.
Hey Ryan, interesting different approach! It's great that we have options and the nested tags certainly helps. About handling verse ranges. Are you referring to nested tags or backlinks? As far as I can see nested tags has issues as you can see a verse range but if you selected down to gen 1:1 you wouldn't see a tag for Gen 1:1-4 as the tag would be different (am I missing something there?) With linking via a backlink, in the Gen 1 doc, you'd see the backlink and you can see the context around that to see how many other verses are there. (BTW, since making this video I've discovered the block reference community plugin which shows backlinks on each block, that helps a lot.). I have seen some other approaches to handling links/tags for the bible which are trying to solve this issue (Perhaps I need to make a video comparing all the different methods!) but a lot seem only half-way there at the moment. So I'm not really sure the _best_ system at the moment but if your system is working for you, then I'd encourage you to keep with it. It's easy to get envious of another approach but if it doesn't fit, you can end up not employing any approach, which would be the worst outcome in my opinion. Sorry I can't provide a clearer answer, feel free to reach out via email if you'd like to discuss this more.
@@chrisjwilson The ability to link to specific verses is frustrating me a bit too. I just started using Obsidian more consistently (I had tried it out several months ago, but finally landed on it as my note-taking app of choice). I find that I'm able to link to a specific verse but Obsidian is adding a unique identifier to each block (not sure what the official name for that identifier is). So I've taken to adding the verse reference in text but then also linking to it in a subsequent reference. So my links to the block level content end up looking like this: (Exodus 28:2 - Exod-28#^c0aea2). Not really liking it - is there a way to link the first part of that reference directly to the block but maintain the "Exodus 28:2" text - so I wouldn't have to add the subsequent link? Hope that makes sense. Thanks for putting out this content - I'm really enjoying it.
Hi Martin. I used a set of files originally from Joschua Glau. I’ve included these in my bible knowledge management starter kit so you can download that and get it. cjwilson.gumroad.com/bkskit
(I’m assuming book is a placeholder for whatever book you might write). Unfortunately there’s no easy solution but you have to embed every verse. So if it’s two verses then you do ![[book#v1]]![[book#v2]]. There’s is a community plugin that makes it easier called something like bible reference plugin (I’ll check when I’m on my computer/iPad) and you can use the command pallet to embed multiple verses. I find it slows down my entry while writing so now I just lazily write the verse reference and then come back later and properly embed using the plugin. I hope that helps.
And on a side note...maybe Timothy wasn't an apostle. It looks like Paul lumps himself and Timothy together where he calls them "servants," but where he called himself an "apostle," he tacked on Timothy afterward.
That's an interesting point. I don't think I ascribed Timothy to be an apostle, although as it means "sent one" he did seem to be sent. This actually prompted me to look up the criteria for an apostle in the Bible (and start a note). It seems to be they are sent and they saw Jesus. Paul seems to list himself as separate from the 12, Barnabas and Paul are both called Apostles in Acts 14:14 and Andronicus and Junia are called Apostles in Romans 16:7, so it's _possible_ Timothy was an apostle, but didn't use the title, or he wasn't, so didn't use the title especially as Paul did for himself in Colossians but not Timothy.
What questions do you have about using Obsidian for making connected Bible notes?
Incredible, this is how I am taking my bible notes from now on

Thanks so much. It is good video. I wonder how to link several verses to together, e.g Gen-01#v1 to #v5?
