Links are the best option imo. This also helps you to learn new things and a link is a note itself so that means you don't need a starting point,
please get rid of the music....sad....
I use color pencils, instead of highlighters. They never bleed or dry out of ink. 😆
thank you, very useful
Thanks for the insights. Instead of Obsidian I use Logseq along with Logos. I am grateful Logos does not use markdown - I find markdown code very annoying. Using tags and the various search functionality you generally can find notes you want. Using the "Your Content" feature and syncing it to your Bible, your notes follow your navigation thru the Bible. In Logos, I generally take bulleted notes and my only major wishes are (1) zooming into a bullet point's children, (2) folding outline levels, and (3) block-level linking to items within a note vs the whole note. I use Logseq for outlining and structuring as you show at 13:30 - then paste that into Logos notes. I would really like to see your use of both apps in a real-world Bible study of a passage.
Wow, he wrote a lot of notes. Thank you for sharing this! I hope you go on more adventures for those of us who are overseas. Prayers and blessings from the Fiji Islands 🇫🇯
Excellent stuff, Praise God...
I teach theology and use both. I have a large collection of ebooks in Logos. The frustration is getting my notes and highlights out of Logos and into Obsidian. I can export all but not the metadata (not even the title of the resource, nor the page number). It should be a LOT easier - at least as easy as getting notes into Obsidian from Kindle. I think this is a major drawback of Logos but I am too committed to go back.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful information. May God bless because you are helping building His Kingdom. God bless you and your family.
In the video you mention a css snipet that makes the verse presentation a little nicer. I can not find it here, in the kits or on GITHUB. Where can I find it? Thanks.
Excellent video and plugin BUT it assumes that I have in place a markdown version of the Bible. Pardon an Obsidian newbie question but but where and how do I put that in place? Thanks.
thanks this really helped me to get an idea of where to use tags and links appropriately.
Funny thing... I just started using Obsidian for a few days without looking for others. But I organized my folders precisely like you-journal in one folder and people in the other.
Analog for the win
Why do you have background music? Can you get rid of it? Thanks...
So true! Now it's exciting in a way that I push myself to read a bit more to get ahead. I just started but I'm really enjoying it, so far I'm a day ahead.

Hi Chris, came across this as a fairly new user of Logos with a huge library getting ready to start in master's work that might be multidimensional-- some practical/counseling, some theology, etc. I love research but have organizational issues. Someone recommended Zettelkasten Method as she is working on her PhD. I am not super tech oriented. Do you think I could manage lots of connections between material/ideas within Logos for longer term research? Does it have a way to work with bringing in articles? She also mentioned Zotero. She helped me identify that I have a research type personality that sees a lot of connections... but the issue is I also see A LOT of connections and sometimes have trouble categorizing information or being fearful I won't be able to remember where it is to retrieve it. My desktop both physical and computer is a mess. TIA for any input.
Logos isn't really designed for Zettlekasten but here's the best way I can think of to do it. You make notes following the zettlekasten method in your various note books. You can use the numbering system, give tags, etc. You can have literature notes where you highlight your resources and you can have fleeting notes which are your own thoughts. You can also import highlights from other resources manually (maybe use zotero and then copy and paste your highlights/note). To do an index, you use the sermon builder feature and share your notes to the relevant index/sermon. That would allow you to group them together. It's not perfect but it would get yout 90% of the way there. Hope this helps.
Thanks for this. I might try and reach out to Josh because, try as I might, I just can't understand how to use the script in order to download the CSB bible. I don't have one of those brains, I guess, and goodness knows I've tried. But I do thank you for getting me started.
Thanks for your videos 😎
My pleasure!
Awesome video, I've started using Obsidian a few weeks ago and consciously stopped importing my notes from Notion and Evernote because I was confused as to which was the best way to organize them. So many videos on UA-cam about Zettelkasten, PARA, MOCs, but I've struggled to find a concise enough video explaining in detail when to use links, tags and folders. I'm very grateful you made this video as it now allows me to confidently import thousands of notes taken from years of work and reading, and knowing that I won't have to waste days and weeks of my life trying to re-organize notes because I started making connections between notes the wrong way (using tags instead of links because I saw a video showing claiming it was superior). I think that this tool is very subjective, and can be adapted to fit different personalities and workflows, but the learning curve is quite high and most of the content requires understanding a lot of concepts before knowing which system of organization works for you. Thanks for your help, and keep up the great work!
I'm so glad you found it useful and I think you are absolutely right: this tool is subjective. You can use it in a totally different way to me and maybe you want to use mostly links, fine. Or maybe you want to only use tags, also fine. I think there are some principles that can make one better for certain functions than another, but that doesn't mean you have to go down that root. I suspect that's also why you've found the learning curve high... I wonder what the simplest first system for a total beginner could be which they could then adapt into any other system they wanted... I'll have a think and see if I can come up with something.
@@chrisjwilson If you manage to come up with a simple system for total beginners to take notes very simply, with high adaptability when they'll figure out their preferred organization style, you'd solve a big problem in this niche I think. I have a few friends who also know of Obsidian and have shared the same struggles, and I have yet to find a resource online addressing this issue once and for all. Most UA-camrs show their particular folder or linking style, but it's hard to find someone who says "If you're like this, then you should probably start with this system". I guess that's the cost of high personalization of the tool: we get easily confused in the beginning, but once we get the hang of it, we can unlock more of its power.
I think that using obsidian to study religious scripture is one of the best use cases for it and I believe it will further the religious studies. Especially with linking notes or verses and looking at graph view
This is great. I am muslim and I have the exact same issue of citing the scripture. Religious People have common interests 😀
There is a free LOGOS starter version.
awful music, awful sound
Noted.
Thanks. I got a lot of good ideas. One request : you are a personable guy but I can barely see text on the monitor when you split the screen between you talking and the monitor. I have to move closer to my screen and squint.
Sorry about that, I hadn't consider that when I made the video but it's a good point. I've tended to have smaller talking head parts in future videos but I'll make sure I bear this in mind if/when I make another. Especially if the point is to show the text 🤦♂️ Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks
No problem
Incredible, this is how I am taking my bible notes from now on
Fantastic!!! Exactly what I was hoping to find, thanks brother
Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!
I'm so scared to move away from folders for categorising my ideas and moving to a new system without folders and just relying on links and tags. Have you any advice for me.
I'd say, don't move away from folders! Start using links alongside folders and see what works for you. Maybe you use more folders than other PKM people, that's fine. Maybe you drop them completely eventually, that's fine too. You don't have to go all in straight away (or ever!)
Thanks this was quick and helpful!
how do I do this with learning Greek? Fully mobile? S Pen capable?
What I really want is an Android equivalent to Pencil Bible. Logos puts their tech behind a massive paywall that only mega Church pastors can afford because of Church budgets. I do not want a pdf equivalent because it is limited given my desire to continue to learn the original languages. Thoughts?
I've heard of the pencil bible but not checked it out. I thought they were working on an android version though but I see they haven't. What's the limits of a PDF bible? There is a greek PDF version you can get (not hebrew I'll admit). I think the only way to get something like that would be to comission an android developer yourself! I'll add that I'm not a mega church pastor and I've built up my logos collection over time. I picked up a free previous generation fundamentals pack, then added a legacy library with a load of good commentaries, then a few more here and now I add a package when it's discounted or when there's a book I need. It's still not cheap and I could get kindle versions of most commentaries for cheaper but the value for me is high (but that may not be the case for every Christian).
@chrisjwilson last I checked, logos had stylus support in a new notes engine in their bronze package; about a $500 buy in. Cost prohibitive for a lot of people. I use pdf Bible journal in a notes app just so my stylus can be effective. In my opinion developers are completely missing it. The notes app is fine, but limited from a perspective of how a proper Bible app ties everything together. Part of the power of a system like logos is how everything gets hyperlinked together. I am glad you believe you have found a way to make their system work for you, I simply think they are over priced to the point of alienating a lot of people who could benefit from their service.
The biggest advantage of a digital Bible vs a paper Bible is I carry around my iPad and it has ALL my resources and access to the entire internet of resources within an easily carried unit. No bulky resource books. No stuffed pencil bag. The biggest advantage of a digital Bible vs an E-BOOK BIBLE is the ability to add pages, write directly on the page, and add decorations if you like to Bible "journal". I solved the problem of finding a version by making my own. Yes, it took me a while and, in truth, I’m still tweaking it, but it is serving my needs. I can do portrait, landscape, landscape with 2 pages so I can read on one side and make notes on the other. I can have a reference resource on one side and the Bible on the other.
I love this video! Seeing how you document your entire thought process is so helpful for me because I tend to hold it all in my mind, which gets hard to maintain over time. Thanks!
No problem at all. I think many of us in the PKM type space can relate to that. I always struggled with remembering things as a kid but paper gave me an extended memory. Digital notes just add more power to that. Hope it helps you with your system.
How did you get those little gray link squares with the numbers in them around the 2:26 mark? They just popped up but no explanation. Seems really helpful.
It's a pluggin called "Strange new worlds" I can't remember if I mentioned it in the video or not. Sorry if I didn't.
@@chrisjwilsonthank you very much!
Hi Chris, thank you so much for this video, I'm just starting out with Obsidian for my digital Bible study notes, how do I get the little annotations to show the notes you've made that link to that verse? I don't have seem to have any such option?
I believe you're referring to the boxes caused by the strange new worlds plugin. Sorry for not mentioning, it must have slipped my mind.
Amazing breakdown!
Appreciate it and glad you found it useful.
Thanks for this video Chris! I was just thinking this morning what if I applied my Zettelkasten system to bible reading and you popped up! Thanks for the insights & inspiration.
Great video! The NIV is my favourite translation, I like how easy it is to understand, and it has a good balance between formal and dynamic equivalence.
I grew up with the NIV and I became too familiar with it but since I've spent the last few years jumping between translations, I appreciate its decisions a lot more. I also like the NLT which I am very surprised by!
I found the NLT a bit too dynamic for me, but the NIV has a good balance between formal and dynamic equivalence in my opinion, similar to the CSB. My favourite translations are the ones that are in between formal and dynamic equivalence, and so far the NIV is the best for me.
I can definitely understand that and i still find the NLT to be a bit too imposing at times, but there are times I find they’ve chosen an idiom rather than just a word for word switch and it does add something.
I can understand that, I always think its good to try a variety of translations anyway. Another reason why I prefer the NIV is because it can appeal more to an international audience at times then the NLT, the NLT sometimes seems to lean towards US readers. For example in Matthew chapter 18 in the parable of the unmerciful servant the NLT uses dollars, but the NIV says bags of gold and silver coins.
No need for music. Very difficult to hear you over the music
All bibles have been magically changed and none of them are still trustworthy.
💯🎯 I've got one that can SEE!
Honestly, I can't understand how the application can add anything to Logos. If I already have Logos, with all the features integrated, why would I need another application to try to do something that Logo already does? I can't understand how Obsidian can be useful if I already have Logos?
Thank you for all your videos; I greatly benefited from them. As a theological student, could you help me by teaching me how to convert Obsidian notes to an assignment?
Im not Chris, but if you need formatting help I can help you out. Had to do the same on my vault for my seminary assignments & it was a headache.
It sounds like a great idea for a video. I think the main mistake people make is assuming that they can just drag and drop/create a new note with in-line blocks and that's enough. It can happen, but it's rare and you risk self-plagerising too. Instead, 1. make a note for your outline and link your atomic notes there. (You can use this to rearrange etc). 2. Write out your essay using your outline. You can copy bits/quotes etc from your notes, and you can make individual notes for certain sections (the intro/conclusion/each subsection) which can help to move things around but these shouldn't be "atomic" notes as they are your final form. 3. Once made, I keep it in my vault as a final product which can help for referencing. Hope that helps, I'd love to know any insights you have too. Always keen to learn.
Have you ever thought of spending some time studying the Quran like this? Or the Bhagavad Gita?
I'm a very new Obsidian user. After watching this I made a rule: a note can't go in a folder unless it has a link both in and out. Otherwise it stays in the inbox.
Interesting rule, why did you set it?
Thanks for sharing! What do you mean by notes on people?
I have some notes for people I meet with regularly with information I should remember. Plus I have some notes on authors or important thinkers. It helps me track notes I have on them or their theories.
@@chrisjwilson Ah cool, thank you for explaining :)
No problem at all. I hope it gives you some ideas for your own system.
