The main problem in the Boer War for the British Army wasn’t just aim. The Boers were both well trained - they were excellent hunters and some had received army training from working in the German colonies - and they owned Mausers which were excellent rifles The guerrilla tactics allowed them to avoid getting swamped in line formation combat and shoot at extreme range. Of course, at this time, the British army as an organisation was focused on organised combat and couldn’t reach the same distances as the Boer. It wasn’t until new tactics were adopted, new training was implemented, and the rifles either replaced or updated that they became better prepared. The British, to cut off the Boers from their farmsteads where they were receiving supplies and intelligence, introduced concentration camps. The families were moved in and this made the Boers much less effective. The concentration camps were not death camps - more like monitored encampments - too many people hear the phrase and their mind instantly goes to the German camps of WW2. However, there were sadly deaths there due to disease, lack of medicine and food. Some argue this was deliberate, some argue it was lack of concern for enemy combatant supporters, while others say it was just genuine misfortune due to the logistics to the camps being disorganised and raided by the Boers. I don’t claim to know on that count. It was certainly a tragedy that should never have happened.
There were many issues between the Boers and the British. Some Boers were unhappy with the ending of slavery in South Africa and dissatisfied with the amount they had been given in compensation. Britain had moved in and the Boers had moved on to two new colonies; the Transvaal and Orange Free State. The problem there was the discovery of diamonds. This led more non-Boer settlers to move in and in and attempt to stop British settlers taking over important positions by sheer numbers; they were only allowed to stay if they accepted they were not allowed to vote. These settlers then complained to Parliament, who used this to allow them to take action against the Boer Republics. In the end, the British Empire won and the Boer Republics became a dominion; the Union of South Africa.
Any factual errors here are mine; this is a very general overview of a way more complicated set of events. I would urge a more in depth and concentrated dive into the history if you are interested.
To correct the unkind soul who said Jeremy was lying; you have to remember Jeremy is British, has not had much experience with firearms so isn’t versed in using them and the people who handed him the AK-47 don’t appear to have switched it from auto to single shot. It’s a recipe for disaster and that it didn’t end worse was a blessing. If you’re ever going to handle firearms, please learn the core 4 rules and use a shop or gallery with professional staff. You want to have a fun experience not end up in hospital or worse.
Apologies for length. Hope this was helpful and have a great day.

AK is the factory/inventor and the number (roghly) the year. Any old junk up to relatively modern and sophisticated guns are often thrown under "AK-47". Actual AK-47 are ancient and very rare. Even old junky ones are likely 74's (year again) or something. Who knows, what Jeremy fired there and in what condition it was.
Or if someone was wise enough to give him blanks :)

I wouldn't put much trust in what Jeremy says, the Kalashnikov is one of the world's most lauded weapons for a reason, not only for its power but its robustness in so many environments. On a separate note Nick if you'd like to shoot one there are a few indoor ranges in Vegas that will accommodate that, one used to let you shoot a Minigun, not sure if that one is still around though. It was going to be one of my stops when doing a US vacation, but life changed and that never happened. Would make a cool short or if reel if you did though.

Also, I think the thing about the AK-47 is that it was made 1947 and is, as Clarkson said, extremely reliable compared to more modern firearms because the mechanism itself is so simple, but it's still a firearm from 1947 so it's not really made for comfort.
It's also spread all over the world because of the Cold War and the Russians handing them out to everybody. and is thus also the only firearm on a national flag, the Mozambican one.

People didn't have jousting competitions like you see in films where their horses gallop towards each other, and they try to knock the other guy off his horse.
You can't have people in your own army killing each other!

its possible to get an AK47 or an AR15 in the UK. It just has to be .22 calibre. So certainly not illegal in the US. They have a rep for being inaccurate which was true. Modern ones are better.

I have used a SA80 ,SLR ,LMG , I have also went to competitions all over the uk in Archery ,I use a compound bow , ,I still am very good with a knife and hit you with it at a distance .
The weapons i would like to try are the Enfield mk1 and mark 2 .m4 ,
I have also used a catapult now they are good .
I am safety in rule as it is the no1 rule of all the book and never fire in anger , I would control the weapon and not the weapon controlling me .
They are for defense only and to protect countries from being invaded by another.
