I remember learning about this at university when I read archaeology. We were all amazed at the self control, which is part of the point of the process and then reaching the highest level in their believe system
You asking for someone to explain the core principle of Buddhist philosophy, Nick? OK, I'll have a bash... Your soul is in an eternal cycle of rebirth & suffering. You can mitigate the suffering by living a good life & not causing suffering to other living beings. There's a reincarnation version of snakes & ladders to reward the good & punish the bad. Being reborn human is the top of the ladder & a snake would be down a snake. The only way to escape is to achieve enlightenment by freeing yourself of all the worldly distractions, like desire, pain, hunger.... ignoring them to the point of death would do that. Just a guess, but I imagine leaving a body behind that doesn't get consumed by the lowlife on the bottom rung (like maggots) is an indication you've escaped the cycle - Hakuna matata
Yep. It's the reincarnation bit he's missing. To them it's not the end of life but a restart on another cycle. Once you believe that it's easy to uinderstand why people would do things like this to improve their chances on the next cycle until they escape to enlightenment and effective godhood. Belief in reincarnation and/or an afterlife is one of the major causes of why people do things that don't make sense if you don't believe that.
obviously they didn't believe that it ends in death, otherwise there would be no point. they probably believe they achieve nirvana like that escaping the cycle of suffering. ofcourse this world is vanity, vanity of vanities all is vanity, but this is not the way. The way to life, of God is through Christ, His Word.
Think I remember you saying you might be in the UK summer 2025. If you fancy a trip on the only commercial passenger hovercraft service in the world come over to the Isle of Wight on the south coast happy to show you the sights
It's because Buddhists believe that suffering comes from attachment to the world, ie. desires, and true bliss only comes when you have no desires left. In this sect, I think they thought; well, what's the ultimate form of detachment from the world? -Death. It goes against the story of the Buddha with his middle way and all of that, but I have to admit it does make sense that it's a long process so the person has time to detach before they die and is thus completely prepared. I don't think it's as crazy as it sounds, and if it's completely voluntary, I would think of it as a very respectable way to die, even if it seems a bit morbid. Also, this is completely without taking into account the selfish nature of not thinking of your loved ones and all that, but monks typically eschew that to begin with, so probably not a problem.
How exactly would someone experience bliss without a functional brain? Serotonin, Dopamine , Oxytocin are the drugs which dictate our mood and feelings, and none of them work in a dead brain. So how exactly would destroying the brain help with achieving a feeling of bliss. More likely it destroys your ability to feel anything.
@@ethelmini I think you're either thinking of this backward or have too low self-esteem. The thing about loved ones is that it is overwhelmingly likely that they love you back, even if they don't express it openly. Could that be a delusion? -Sure. But let's look at it from a game theory perspective; If they don't love you back, and you choose not to die; no harm done, if they love you back and you choose not to die; no harm done, if they do love you back and you don't choose to die; no harm done, if do love you back and you choose to die; lots of harm done. It's really the only scenario that matters, so I'd make sure that your loved ones really don't love you back or are at least sympathetic to your suicide before you do it. Otherwise, it would be considered a selfish act. Sure, they could excuse it with you being so desperate that you didn't have the capacity to consider them, but in the end, I think they would be more hurt by not being informed or asked.
It's devotion to the religion of buddhism and trials required for ascension... Ironic that a 'Christian' would ask why someone would do that... What's the christian trials for entering Heaven? Go to church on sunday and dont touch yourself? Seems some people show greater devotion to their religion than others.
Now that’s why I’m not at all religious, they all have pointless silly rules like no meat on Fridays, and don’t eat bacon because the pig is a dirty creature, thou shalt not kill.
@@samhilton4173 What does the Catholic commandment Thou shalt not kill? Fifth commandment. "You shall not kill." This commandment demands respect for human life and is more accurately translated as "thou shalt not murder." Indeed, killing may, under limited circumstances, be justified within Catholicism.

It's not the true Buddhist way. He once said. One doesn't get Enlightenment from striving oneself.
Why ? Because religious people have lost all touch with reality. Where would I begin ?
Having faith allows devotees to believe anything. Applies to all religions to varying degrees. Faith = belief without evidence
Religion can help me lose touch with reality? Sounds amazing. Time to find a religion to join.
Atheism is a religion too.

Perhaps they should re-watch it and listen properly. Then they would know why the Buddhists were doing it.
not sure "why" is a good question in combination with religion.
Or politics.
Every religion spawns followers who just have to try and outdo one another. Humans are competitive by nature.
I definitely have pity for you Jodi, after all you have to put up with Nick 😁😁

Thinking of your loved ones is selfish. You're expected them to feel the pain of grief when you die.
