  • P3 I continue with the post clean up and paint & make a few discoveries along the way, I had suspected this was a gas lamp post (no electrical door), and I had said the oddity of the top arms having been made to be bolted/riveted but were welded had me thinking it was dated pre war.
Well finding a makers name on the post confirmed this, John M Moorwood Ltd, Eagle Foundry, Attercliffe, Sheffield. 1916 to 1930
With the post painted and ready for return to the owners, it was time to turn my attention to the top.
Now there is the possibility the top was not made by Moorwood Ltd, the std top fitting means most tops would fit.
So I start the clean up, & closer inspection as to the style, in my mind, makes this a early type gas lamp with a naked flame & as opposed to later styles that had gause mantle burners the hung down (there is simply no room for the gas pipe to get past the enamel top plate).
the poor lamp had seen a hard life so repair is to be needed.
P2: cleaning the top part of the post, as this is a fill in job, I am cleaning & painting as I go, I then jump over to the lap bracket ( I had a welding job so thought I'd do this at the same time).
P1: With only one post to do, it's touch and go weather it's worth getting it sandblasted, and seeing as the main post is in good condition I felt it not worthy of the expenditure.
I make a start on the post by cleaning up the Foundation (the bit that goes in the ground) no need to paint this, it will outlast you & I.
Then I try and remove the rather corroded to collar.

Interesting castings those lampposts - I am glad that it was not me trying to make them - the core work looks to be a bit problematic 😱.... Martin

Come on Martin, if anyone can do it, my money's on you!

@@jagboy69, & Martin, no idea what they used to make that core, but it must be fairly strong considering the length & the cast must be fairly accurate as the paper work shows a cross cut of the post and I reckon the wall thickness is under 10mm (3/8").
And before either of you say anything about, when is my next casting video, well, I do have some bits to do (more WW2 German) but I also have a lot going on.
Added to that I have just had knee surgery and things are not looking good for me, so I need to string these knackered bones out for as long as I can 😬

@@WarGrade Full knee replacement or arthroscopic? I'm working with a torn meniscus right now myself. Might have had a little to do with "the hole" I'm working on.🫣

@@jagboy69 arthroscopic but what he found was not good, and when he says; "we would rather not operate on the same knee again within 6 months of the first operation" it sums it up, next one is a full knee, but he thinks I am way to young and active to be having one.

@@WarGrade Question for ya.. Did your dad have wonky knees? Mine did and my doc says crappy knees are hereditary. 🙄 My arthroscopic procedure is the end of this month.

I love following your lamp projects.. I mess with a fair bit of copper and bronze myself. Something I have found for protecting raw copper that lasts for years is Cerakote. They have a clear coating with UV inhibitors that works really well. I don't know how your tig skills are, but the holes in the copper can be fixed, but it's tricky on such thin material. I'm guessing you aren't going to take it back to a gas light, but if you need parts, I've found a great company here in the states that is excellent for gas lamp parts. Just drop me a line anytime.

A TIG skills not great B it's paper thin at best in places & that's before a good enough clean to tig or solder to
      believe
