As someone who normally finds any violin performance to be screechy and unpleasant, that was by far the most pleasant sounding violin I've possibly ever heard. Perfect sound, perfect pitch. Very impressive.
Thanks! I know quite some makers, but usually they don't show the world their talent on the violin. But in general this is a big plus for me because I Trainer my ears since early childhood and feel the playability and sound
Gorgeous all the way around. Looking forward to hearing the varnished results. Thank you for the insight and deep practice that informs your sound and artisan's path.
Good for you! Setting up the instrument in the white is an excellent idea. I have talked to a lot of luthiers in my life and read a lot about violin making. Though I never heard the difference between unfinished vs finished directly, I have gathered from discussions and reading that most people think the instruments sound better in the white, but the finish is important because it helps protect the wood. Of course, they look much nicer finished.
You will get as many opinions as many luthiers you ask. And luckily is humans have different tastes otherwise every violin and Violinist would sound and like the same.
Hello and thank you! I took from the book what was managable and makes sense for me, but I don't do every Single step from it. What I do is measuring. Measuring the weights, measuring the woods properties, frequenzies, thickness and writing everything down to get a feeling what does what. But a big thing is also the Intuition, I know it's tough to trust someones Intuition compared to facts but I believe both together (Intuition and science) are an unbeatable pairing.
I am amazed at how good an unvarnished violin sounds. I’ve heard the debates about the impact of varnish on the sound quality of the great old violins. After hearing this demonstration I’m not sure how much varnish could improve the sound. Varnish can, however, impact the life and integrity of the instrument over time. That won’t be so easy to demonstrate absent the passage of time. Great video. Wonderful instrument.
Thank you for taking the time to listend and share your thoughts! It is not so easy to get the right environment to really make comparison. There are so many factors which play an important role. I try to study the changes to be able to feel more control about the making process
Beautiful sounding instrument. I used to play my acoustic guitars in the white early on in my career, just to learn about the affects of finish, intriguing journey.
I am not a violnist but I think the sound is very powerfull. I could not really detect a wolftone anywhere during your playing. It did seem some tones were a bit more difficult to bring out but that may be because the instrument is new. It will probably age over time and gain even more depth. To me it seems it is a wonderful instrument! Congratulations !! And thank you for the video.
Never heard a maker play that well before, nice job on the Sibelius, even the phone ringing at the end was in tune, haha. // I do like the look of the blonde spruce though, very striking, are there any varnishes that are quite clear/pale?
Thank you! I think this is a big plus for me because I have an exact idea of the sound and can immediately see and feel the instruments soul. Yes there are clear and pale varnishes, oil vanrishes often have a yellowish color due to the ingredients but spirit varnish can be completely clear
@@geigenbauhellmich2296 Yeah, I find it strange when makers don't play at least a little, because they always have to rely on players to come and tell them what's happening. I was watching some of Edgar Russ's videos on here, and his friend (maker) eventually took up cello and said now can understand things from the player side much better. On the other hand, violin is harder than cello and much harder than guitar, so it isn't easy for makers to play even average on it. Maybe I've just undermined my own argument. Ha.
A beautiful rich & live sound! My first violin was based on a Guarneri pattern, but I wasn't so faithful with the arching though & tended to tailor that to my desire at the time. I also set it up & played it in the white for a while before finishing as I wanted to try the Sacconi Strad 'secret' treatment method (with waterglass). It did have a 'live' sound in the white.
I've listened to over a hundred online violin demos, and this is easily the finest sounding demo I've yet heard. Lovely violin, and very well played. Remarkably consistent output throughout its range. Please mention which model Guarneri this is??
I hope so too! I will use oil varnish on this violin so it will also be interesting to have a longterm comparison or maybe after a year and then after more years. There are so many things to explore and research!
It really raises the question: why do we varnish the string instruments? Part of it may aesthetics - we like the looks of varnished wood, or it may also be to protect the wood from the oils in our hands that would mar the wood without varnish, or perhaps some people think that the varnish improves the sound -a subjective opinion. But I agree that your playing was excellent, as is your English. Sie spielen und sprechen ganz gut! (You have no idea how hard it is to say something in German with an English spell checker changing every word. I finally gave up! LOL)
Of course in English, if you want to reach one thousand times more people on social media. Very interesting experiment with the unvarnished violin indeed. And your playing is the best I’ve heard from a violin maker, nice job! 😀
A couple of years ago I had a chance to buy an unvarnished violin at a folk festival. But I didn’t have a bow to try it out with, nor did I know who could varnish it. Although it was a very good price, I passed it up. I still wonder if I should have bought it.
Interesting story! Buying an instrument no matter if varnished or not is always risky. Especially when you don't know the dealer or don't have the expert knowledge to verify of the price is ok and the instrument worth it. Especially at a folk festival or any kind of festival I would be very careful. I think you did the right decision! And if you still want an unvarnished violin, there are Shops which sell them and have a fair price and offer a working instrument.
I have a very good ear for violin tone and this one is very good, even and powerful. Maybe some slight adjustment needed to bring out the full potential of the G string. Well done.
Good morning! I understand that without background knowledge this feels unfair. But what you don't see are the many many hours of work I spent to come to this point. I was talented with playing the violin as a child but what made the main difference was the many hours of practiced while other children played outside, the hours I practiced during holidays and visited mastercalsses while others went on vacation. It would be unfair if those hours didn't pay off. For violinmaking I didn't bring any talents (but the violin playing skills), I did so many mistakes, you won't believe it. But again I started to practice every evening next to school, every weekend and even now I work alot on my skills. I hope this is a motivation that patience and practice will always win over talent!
Yes, that's what I experienced! Also my latest one (the Strad model) turned out really great. Less dark sound as the Guarneri ones, but super clear and brillant. What do you look for in an instrument that touches your heart? And what kind of Videos would you think are interesting to watch?
That is a great sounding violin (or fiddle as we call it here in Kentucky)! How much would an instrument like that cost? My grandfather was an amazing first-generation bluegrass fiddler, and he enjoyed doing various setups on his instruments to see how they would respond. You're a wonderful player and thanks for sharing!
I think the sound is great on an varnished violin but to protect the wood long term i think it needs varnish. Also to varnish it you need to remove the top plate

It would be interesting to see scientific analysis of the varnished/unvarnished wood and also the analysis of other materials like carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is not going to create the same sound. But that is entirely the point.
Your violin rivals the instruments from the Great Masters! If your going to kill the tone with varnish I would think it way down to water like consistency. I cant help but say if it were me I would quit while I was ahead and just keep the instant in a plastic bag in a sturdy case and play it for several years maybe ten years then varnish it latter, if at all. Your instrument sounds so resonant I would not even varnish it. It is beautiful as is. Dont spoil it! Don't damp it with varnish! Let it breath! Wait a few years then if you must, ... only very light stain free spirit varnish. You seem to have an aptitude for carving fine violins. I'm honoured to make your acquaintance. Your instrument rings true!
Hello and thank you! The other Video you have seen is not the same violin, it's completely different model and wood. Ans yes this one is really my masterpiece! I will add as little varnish as possible and start to varnish it in a few days. So excited!
It seems the sound is distinctively on the strong side. For my personal taste the sound post should be adjusted to produce the softer tone. My wild guess: the sound will be even stronger when varnished.
Thats what I was looking for: a distinctived sound for a professional violinist who wants to fill a whole hall with the violin but also has a sweet warm tone and many colors to work with. Easy playability to the highest notes. It's not everybodys taste for sure and also a matter of the varnish I use how the sound will progress. But in the end it's my clients decision weather or not they want me to change somenthing (in the range that's acceptable for the longevity of the instrument)
The sound changes the varnish indeed. It depends if you seal the violin inside, what you use as a sealer in general, if it soaks into the wood and how it changes it. Also the kind of varnish (Spirit or oil or mix) and the amount make a difference. In general you can say, it dampens some frequencies
This is once more an Indikator for me that I need professional recording Equipment and the mobile phone doesn't transport the whole sound. But it gives an impression. I could not find any buzzing or uneven notes, maybe my phone corrected some too loud volumes in the recording? I really like the sound and for me it's exactly what I'm looking for. It's good that people don't have the same taste and are different 🤗

Very beautiful sound of the violin! The violin is made according to the method described by Patrick Kreit in his book "The sound of Stradivari"?
