  • Demonstration by Richard (the owner) presenting the Electrolux Dishmaid Dishwasher, produced in 1961. Its manually operated using a small motor to drive the wash basket, you simply connect a hose to your hot tap and fill. It has an automatic drain overflow, when the water flows through the drain you switch off the hot water and time it for a wash programme.
Detergent and Rinse Aid is added through a slider door on the top, when the dishes are suitably cleaned the drain out the water, re-fill again to rinse. On the final rinse add rinse aid to assist the hot air drying.

Hello Phil, yes with a little marketing for more sales, probably wouldnt get away with it today, it does rather rumble along but does a good job for how its made !!

Hello Justin, yes I can imagine, the new machines are simply white boxes with a powerful pump and all look the same, this is very different and at the time looked fabulous with colour.

This machine is definitely cool and probably cleans dishes better than the current dishwashers do... it seems like the new ones just rinse and never get completely clean, I remember the old dishwashers as a kid and your dishes always came out shiny clean. The only thing about this one I don’t like
Is it looks very manual with each step, you have to be watching it. Cool video though, thx

Yes it is an semi automatic dishwasher not with a timer, but fun to use with the user interaction.

    • @Marc-ox7fy

Seriously, this type looks really robust and simple, and something you could repair yourself when it breaks. Which then has an advantage to modern dishwashers. Or all modern devices. When a new device breaks nowadays, it's scrap metal.

@@Marc-ox7fy Still keep with the idea, but new versions. I think it is great, but running machine that old for any length of time may not be a good idea. I have given up the idea of having a dishwasher now, i was thinking of a counter top one, but the cons are more than the pro, the main con is, I can wash up by hand faster.

By the time one has filled and emptied the machine, one could have done the dishes in the classical way ;) According to the history of the company, the first dishwasher was from 1959 and called the D10 knicknamed "Round Jar". Is it the same, or was the Dishmaid already a better version ? Nice to see how it was operated, keep up the good = instructive "work" here on UA-cam.

This one seems semi- automatic. My countertop dishwasher is fully automatic. I'm not understanding why he has to be there to add rinse-aid during the cycle, and why the hose isn't attached to a sink adapter. It kinds of defeats the time saving, and hassle savings that mechanical dishwashers usually afford

Haha please tell me you actually don’t think the UK doesn’t have dishwashers? Ours are actually more advanced than ones you find in the US; they’re made of stainless steel not plastic and they heat their own water, no messing around with running the hot tap (faucet) to get the hot water through. This guy is a vintage appliance enthusiast.

@David Johnson But people never used to be so lazy in the U.K and done a lot of stuff by hand. These days it as if the whole country have got lazy, with online food shopping and dishwashers.
i have never had or used a dishwasher and to be honest I doubt i will, quicker to wash the things by hand.
